Doc Meeting With Grant Hill

FanHouse reports:

Doc Rivers may get a second chance to coach Grant Hill. The last time it didn't turn out so well.

Rivers, now coach of the Boston Celtics, and Hill, an unrestricted free agent who played last season for the Phoenix Suns, will meet Sunday in Orlando to discuss the possibility of working together again. Both make their offseason homes here.

"I don't have to go very far to meet with him this time,'' Hill said Saturday night before watching his wife Tamia perform at a Summer Soul Series concert in Orlando.

would he play for the LLE? Even if someone offered him more money elsewhere?

by Fan from VT on Jul 5, 2009 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

Good question...

And if he did, where do we go from there. If we have him locked up with the full LLE, hopefully Sheed with the entire MLE, what happens next? We still need a legit back-up point guard. Do we see where that roster takes us and then deal for someone with our expiring contracts? Do we go over the luxury tax threshold to bring in more people. Sheed’s agent said apparently that Danny promised them they would do that, but will they really? Are there any PG’s are out there that are worth doing that for?

I strangely, and probably not intelligently, have a great feeling about both Sheed and Hill. I don’t know why, but I feel like they are going to both end up coming here.

Agree

I agree. I have a feeling that Hill and Wallace will be wearing the Celtic green this fall.

His career is near it’s end, he might want a championship and he seems like one of those few guys that would easily sacrifice money for the opportunity to win. With that said, I’m pretty sure that the Celtics are opperating under a lot of sign and trade scenarios.

grant is a solid citizen and a bright guy and a talent, but he is old and has way too many miles on him. does he take development time away from either walker or giddens? yes.

I won't ask

I’ll just hope it is true

DO NOT WANT

I really don’t get this unhealthy fascination with Grant Hill within the fan circles here. Way too many miles, and it showed in spades whenever I would watch Phoenix (which was often enough last year).

I’d rather take a flyer on a younger, more energetic SF who can actually play or be taught to play some defense, like Anthony Parker or Azubuike or Luc Mbah Mboute, as opposed to a veteran who may be ‘savvy’ but simply doesn’t have the legs to play the defense required by the C’s.

The SF position is where we need defense the most, to spell Pierce and the swingmen he has to guard…do you see Hill guarding Lebron?

by newyorkceltics on Jul 5, 2009 9:58 AM EDT reply actions

Hill is affordable

Anthony Parker will not come here for the LLE. He’ll definitely get more elsewhere. So in effect, the question is whether you want to use the MLE for the frontcourt or for the wing position. If Rasheed will take the MLE, then that is the best value in terms of talent.

by Surferdad on Jul 5, 2009 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed!!!

hill would be a nice to have, but he cannot take a significant role here. we need fresher legs, more toughness and aggressiveness (i.e. what bill walker should be).

hill didn’t really look that impressive to me in phx. it’s great he’s healthy and able to play, but we will get run off the court if we keep putting old guys on our squad. youth youth youth … like 25-29 year old youth.

by Fred Roberts on Jul 5, 2009 10:05 AM EDT reply actions

Nice to see the Celtics are putting the personal touches in the FA hunt

Wallace and Hill would be the perfect offseason FA run.

And for those who want younger swingman, who is out there that is as talented, in their 20s and available for the LLE or vet min?

by Wide Load on Jul 5, 2009 10:35 AM EDT reply actions

Stop With The Old Legs Comments

If anything he should have very fresh legs

Grant Hill = 787 Games Played / 28122 Minutes Played

Ray Allen = 942 Games Played / 35099 Minutes Played

Paul Piecre = 813 Games Played / 30525 Minutes played

Kevin Garnett = 1055 Games Played / 39635 Minutes Played

Grant Hill seems to be past the Ankle injuries , he has played 152 of a possible 164 games over the past 2 years. He definitely has some minutes left in him !

Bench minutes

Hill would only be playing bench minutes after all, so I don’t think his age would be to big of a deal. That being said, I think Barnes would be a better option. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, hopefully DA makes the right decision, he doesn’t always.

Barnes

would he come here for the LLE?

by hpantazo on Jul 5, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Youth

I WOULD LOVE TO SIGN RASHEED AND GRANT but I wish that there was some way we could get players as good as them but much younger.

by Mike-Dub on Jul 5, 2009 11:16 AM EDT reply actions

Milage on Grant Hill

In some ways Hill has less milage than other players his age. Because of his ankles, the guy spent a big chunk of his career not playing. If his ankles are good, the rest of his body should be in good shape for his age. Also, Hill has always been a hard worker and been in good shape. That starts to show as players hit their late 30s. Fat guys don’t make it that far.

Still it is a young man’s game. If the Celtics go with Sheed and Hill to shore up their bench, I worry that they are too old. On the other hand, old guys can do well off the bench. It is when you sign old guys to start (are you listening Cavs?) that you are in trouble.

by John70 on Jul 5, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

I’d rather have Grant Hill than Rasheed Wallace.

Signing Hill is very important to the Celtics.

by Who on Jul 5, 2009 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

"Veteran" Team?

Hill, Sheed, Garnett, Pierce, Allen. If we get any more Veteran than this, we will need more than Billy Walker – we will actually need “walkers” and maybe some adult diapers.

We might want to also stock up on some extra thick Scali headbands as well.

I guess it works, but the “window of opportunity” for #18 shrinks and looks more like a rabbit hole that may take awhile to dig back out of in about two years. Tough balancing act for the Celtics.

Keep the cheerleaders young, scantily dressed and pretty as a distraction

As Soon as...

We sign a vet wing player I bet we trade TA and Scals. Possibly Pruitt and the loser of the Giddens/Walker battle. That’s around 8 million. They probably would have more value at the deadline but it looks like we won’t have the roster space to wait on their value to go up.

by Evantime34 on Jul 5, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions

I'm pretty sure Hill still has some mileage left...

I know the ability to dunk can be interpreted in different ways (e.g., style of play), but it does show a player’s athletic strength and ability to get to the rim.

Check this article out to see the number of dunks every NBA player had this 08-09 season:
http://www.rotoevil.com/nba/2008-2009-slam-dunk-stats#more-1708

Interesting stats:

Grant Hill = 23 dunks (1 less than Tim Duncan and 3 more than Matt Barnes and Carlos Boozer)

Paul Pierce = 10 dunks

Ray Allen = 3 dunks

Btw, Rondo, Davis, and Walker each had 14 dunks

Take this for what it’s worth.

by Newguy on Jul 5, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting

I guess he isn’t too feeble.

by VtCeltics on Jul 5, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Others have done this too but I want to remind everyone the ref Rasheed got suspended for threatening was none other than Tim Donaghy

so before some here keep calling him a bonehead or other such things lets give him credit for great judgement:>)

There's no D in Grant Hill

Okay, so Grant Hill has played less minutes than Ray and Pierce and Garnett, the fact that this came by virtue of injuries doesn’t really make me confident.

I just don’t think the guy has the legs and lateral movement to play tough defense on the guys we need him match up against. And against common wisdom, I’d rather have fresh young legs on the second unit to push the tempo and not geriatrics who have to slow down the pace.

There’s also something about having both Hill and Wallace that reminds me of the 04 Lakers (?) adding Malone and Payton…

All that said, l hope I’m devastatingly wrong and we win Banner 18 thanks to Hill hitting the game-winner in several playoff games and Rasheed Wallace swallowing Violet Palmer alive.

Danny has a thing for...

… high level, great character old pro’s, i.e. Reggie Miller. I have a thing for someone who can annoy the heck out of James and Bryant in a series. With Grant Hill, I guess the defensive plan would be to make them drive into shot blockers, Garnett, Perk, Wallace and Swift.

by Little D on Jul 5, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

Also remember

for those who commented on him looking slow last season with the suns. That they play a very fast paced run and gun offense, i think hill would be a much much better fit in our offense, which doesn’t require the same intensity as the sun’s.

by beantownboy171 on Jul 5, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Defense

The C’s need someone to spell Pierce on defense, someone that can play alongside him, but guard the opponent’s best player at the same time. Less millage or not, Hill doesn’t strike me as someone who can really make the Lebrons and Kobes of the league work.

I suppose Anthony Parker isn’t much of a defender either, but he knocks down threes consistently, something that Posey did two years ago. Any chance they can get him back? Battier would be my first choice and would unbelievable on the Celtics, but I guess that isn’t too feasible.

G,Hill

I like G.Hill for what he contributed to the NBA over the yrs.but i feel he is to old to put on our team.It would be old enough with Sheed at 36 or 37.I look at what a player look like after a 82game season, and the odds are not in your favor with a team filled with vets.We need to add a few younger but experience players like a Matt Barnes,Josh Childress into the mix.Im not totally aganist G.Hill just don’t see a load of older vets on one team.
