I Feel the Need....the Need for Sheed (in Green)

On his way....

More photos » by Allen Einstein - NBAE/Getty Images

On his way....

Sheed is a Celtic, committing to a two-year deal at the mid-level.  I believe contracts can be signed on July 8.

From the Globe, quoting an "NBA Source"...who appears to be Mark Murphy of the Herald

An NBA source said tonight forward Rasheed Wallace has committed to sign with the Celtics Wednesday, the first day free agents are eligible to sign.

"Once (Wallace) had a chance to reflect on everything, and realizing what his objectives are, he just decided this was the best fit for him, all the way around," said Bill Strickland, Wallace's agent.

Wallace is expected to receive a two-year deal using the mid-level exception (expected to be about $5.6 million to $5.8 million).

The Celtics All-Star trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, owner Wyc Grousbeck, coach Doc Rivers, and president Danny Ainge met with Wallace last week. Wallace turned down overtures from Orlando and San Antonio to commit to Boston.

Good lookin' out by JohnnyRondo who spotted that Sheed's agent was on CSN tonight around 10pm.   Check out the forums thread for a recap.

It is reported on ESPN.com!

HOLY SHEED!!!

Excellent news! I was worried that Sheed would finally decide to sign with San Antonio or take too much time to make a decision but it’s clearly great that he committed to the C’s!

Now I hope he doesn’t do a “Turkoglu” but I’m sure he won’t. Great news for the C’s, now we can focus on a backup wing and then a backup point (if necessary). Hill or Barnes anyone?

WELCOME TO THE C'S RASHEED!

DID NOT EXPECT SHEED TO AGREE TO THE CONTRACT OFFER SO SOON…. EXCELLENT NEWS… SO HAPPY HE SIGNED WITH US TO HELP US WINNER BANNER 18!

i don't think a metric exists...

to measure the difference that we will see between moore last year and sheed this year…and that’s even if sheed is washed up

Are the Celtics done or are they going to do more ?

I LOVE IT!

Lets say we get to the finals, and face LA. They go big with Bynum, Gasol, and Odom, Artest and Kobe. We go with Perk, KG, Sheed, PP and Ray. Forget point guards….What a match up!!!!

HUGE

Big, BIG splash, let’s make more waves…
BANNER 18 is there for the taking, this is a super talented and experienced squad.
KEEEEEEEEEEEP Rondo.
I’d vote NO for Grant Hill, but that’s just me.
I totally trust Danny.
Heck, he brought us 17.
And he’ll bring us 18.
Who cares is ARTEST is in LA LA LAND.
The Celtics signed an experienced and dedicated player.
The Lakers signed a crazy person.

Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk

The Lakers signed a crazy person.

I love it! I read that and just started laughing. Thanks

by Little D on Jul 5, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you're going to say that,

then I’ll register that at the beginning of the FA period, had I been told that the Celtics had to sign one guy this offseason with a preexisting reputation for craziness, Wallace would have been my number two choice behind the gentleman who chose LA.

That doesn’t mean I’m not cool with this signing (in fact, I’m quite interested to see how it turns out), but I don’t see a basis here for jabbing at the Lakers’ acquisition on this one. Sure, it could blow up in their face – but so could the Celtics’.

I think both work out well for their respective teams.

well

it can be parsed as artest is a top player in this league. i would have been thrilled about him in green. don’;t get me wrong i am beyond excited about ’sheed. just also love artest and think he adds immeasurably to any team he is on.

the last thing Tanguay needs is an ego boost…..its a little annoying that he was right.

And great title to the post ha, I love Top Gun. Sheed is the perfect fit for this team, I’m so much less stressed about the rest of the offseason now. Now i can sit back and enjoy Summer League play, go Fazekas!

I couldn't be happier...

This started out as a scenario beyond what I even dream about when it comes to Celtics acquisitions.. and after spending 14 hours painting my place today I finally sat down (exausted) with some food to see this. Perhaps there are basketball gods afterall.

Next step, IMO, spend the money that was set aside for BBD on a backup PG and most importantly a wing player capable of giving Pierce a rest.

Yup

If there was a way to get Hakim Warrick, that’d be great…

What I really want, though, is not to see TA, the human turnover machine, in green.

! ! ! I am sooo excited ! ! !

I was just over on the Spurs blog when someone flashed this news! If this is true, the Spurs are really deflated…they think Sheed was their hope to match the Lakers. (I still feel that, healthy, we match favorably with Lakers.) They were convinced Sheed was going to sign with them because of the tax advantages in Texas over Massachusetts, and the weather. This will put us out of reach!!! Gotta love it!!!

He's 35 and he shoots Three's ....easy G17

It might be good news – time reveals all does it not?

He is a “hired gun” for two years. Hope he shows up in shape and ready to play.

He can be a great boost, or an old dude who is suddenly looks like Artis Gilmore in a green jersey. We’ll see.

I am guessing it is better money than was spent on Scali ($15 million) and glad we are not wasting money on Marbury.

I have a “Need for Sheed” but I also have to see the Deed (is done) by next June and hanging in the windows.

What I don’t have a Need for is Injury Bingo over at the old folk’s home.

Don’t forget BBD and I hate Three’s

Now KG, Ray, Pierce and Wallace need to visit Grant Hill together and get him to sign.

by Wide Load on Jul 5, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We should make a play for Hakim Warrick.

As I posted yesterday, Warrick can cover the backup 3 and 4, and could be had for TA and BBD in a sign and trade. The Cs would probably have to send a few bucks to Memphis to make it work.

by TripleOT on Jul 5, 2009 9:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure

I would much rather do that then get Grant Hill. There are tons of athletic, young wings that should be available, too… It really shouldnt be all that hard to find one who fits well… and is something like we thought TA would be…

Perfect Fit

Excellent work from Ainge and the rest of Celtics management. He was the perfect fit— for Rivers’ offense and for the team in general. He just has to give us 25-30 minutes a game.

It would be nice to resign BBD too. I think that’s likely given the state of the market.

by Brickowski on Jul 5, 2009 9:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Minutes

Brick, you think he’ll be playing that much? If we resign BBD which I think we do, I would guess we’re looking at this per 96 minutes:

KG 32
Perk 28
Sheed 20
BBD 16

Then again, it also will involve match-ups, foul trouble and injuries.

by amenhotep04 on Jul 5, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ooooops

If BBD is going to the Spurs, then strike the minutes conversation. But shoot, we need some bigs. Does this mean the summer team bigs are playing for a contract?

def could see BBD back

maybe he takes the offer sheet and hopes for better luck next year? with the injury/age of the guys ahead he should still get decent minutes

We were all in such a need for Sheed! WoW our bench just got a huge boost.

The Celtics need to use this momentum and convince Grant Hill to get onboard. Then, bring back BBD and I’m pretty confident about our team baby!

Now DA needs to clear out some deadwood

Like TA and Scal, and maybe House, in order to bring in a quality 7th man type wing or PG. There’s got to be some team out there (with a guy on a two year deal at $6m a year) looking to clear up some cap room next year.

Or maybe the Cs can bribe a team with some cash, TA, Scal and $2m for Earl Watson might work.

I'd be surprised if FA can't get something for BBD

I can understand that a non-contender might not want to pay BBD over $4m a year, but what if they could more a contract they don’t need to pay him this year?

If SA signs him to an offer sheet, Ainge needs to get on the phone and figure out how to match the deal and move BBD for some bench help. If won’t be easy, since he’s a BYC player, but maybe they can combine TA, also a BYC and Scal and come up with something.

by TripleOT on Jul 5, 2009 11:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Why would BBD accept C’s counteroffer only to get himself traded to somewhere else he may not want to be – what am I missing?

Is it Soup Yet?

by Master Po on Jul 5, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he has no choice

the c’s can match any offer sheet he signs and keep him, there is no rule against turning around and trading him (after some time though.)

by Brendan on Jul 5, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

thats the teams leverage – if SAS really want BBD, the C’s can say “we’re going to match, unless you want to do a S&T”

BBD agrees because he gets to be in SA with the contract he wanted. Celts do it to get something. SAS do it so they don’t lose BBD.

They’d have to actually want TA or House though – I doubt they rate BBD highly enough to take TA for nothing – and we’d have to take back something from them to match – most likely SAS and BOS probably are bad trade partners for a BBD S&T.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!

This will be great. Even moreso if they can get Sheed to pwn some foos down on the block.

The offense is kinda perfect for Sheed’s current game, though. Tons of open looks for big men at the top of the key.

BBD a Spur

If it’s true that BBD is going to the Spurs then we can bring back Leon when he’s healthy. I think one of the reasons they didn’t tender a contract to Leon was because he was injured and they had a roster spot tied up with BBD. Now that spot is open.

by badax33 on Jul 5, 2009 11:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

agree

was just typing this when your comment popped up!

I think BBD gone means we go with Scal and Smith as the 4th and 5th guys until Powe is proven. If we end up with an extra roster spot, I bet Powe gets a contract sooner.

Leon has been insulted - he won't be back - and I don't blame him

and NO – I don’t want to re-open this discussion

I disagree

its a business – and Leon will be back if the C’s can offer him the best deal, I don’t think the “insult” thing is anything more than rhetoric by athletes, i also don’t think Powe was insulted, its not like he was going to be taking the vet min before his injury. if you dont want to debate this fine, just ignore me in the first place.

Yea

Leon probably will sign with another team just to spite us.

PO, I wrote Wyc a very forceful e mail,

and I expect them to keep a roster spot open for Powe.

well good luck with that

But I expect Powe to be back like I expect my taxes to go down

hmmm...

If Glen Davis is leaving, I’m wondering if there’s any reasonable chance Robert Swift could be a serviceable backup center (that is, something more than POB).

Wow...

was just thinking… imagine how EPIC a Celtics-Lakers final would be this season… So many story lines, so many characters.

David Stern is probably already coaching the refs to make this happen.

Great add to keep up and pass other top contenders

perk will match up fine with shaq vs cavs
and lakers signing artest will only swap out ariza who are both good at the same things except trash talking

I’m pleasantly surprised he’s coming to Boston. I didn’t see him picking us. Just normal negativity I guess. Our bench just got a major upgrade! Hill will be another.
