Conflicting Big Baby Updates
With Sheed under wraps, we turn our attention to Grant Hill and Big Baby.
We have conflicting rumors on Big Baby. Tanguay maintains that there's a lot of interest:
Big Baby update San Antonio and Orlando are talking with Big Baby. The conversations are picking up speed.
However, it seems that Magic GM Otis Smith is denying those reports:
When asked about Glenn "Big Baby" Davis, Smith denied that the Magic had any interest.
Also, it seems the Spurs are not close to a contract offer for Big Baby:
Though the Spurs have contacted Davis since free agency began last week, they have yet to discuss an offer with his camp. In addition, the two sides have not talked since Wallace committed to the Celtics on Sunday.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Davis, a restricted free agent, is not particularly close to signing an offer sheet with any team.
In Grant Hill news, Tanguay reports via Chris Mannix that the Doc Rivers meeting took place and that Hill's wife might have some interest in NYC because she's a singer.
Update: Newsday is reporting that Grant Hill is very serious about his interest in New York:
"I've always been a fan of the Knicks and the city," Hill told reporters during his visit at the Garden Monday. "Obviously, they've gone through a lot the last few years, but I'm a big fan of Donnie Walsh and Mike D'Antoni, so I'm definitely interested. I'm just taking it all in."

Sheed
maybe we can now send him to recruit Grant Hill. Why would he want to go to the Knicks? There is no chance for a ring there.

Gee, after all those fruitless years, Grant Hill seems to think the Boston and New York opportunities are on the same level. I don’t know what’s more discouraging. That news, or that awful summer league game I watched.

Best of luck with that singing career, Mrs. Hill.

we can let her sing the national anthem now and then before games
that’s about all she will do in NY anyway

Damn
The wife screwed us over.
There’s no way he signs with us now.

Who Cares
Grant Hill would be a nice pickkup, but there are so many SF/G available that I’m really not going to worry about Grant Hill. We can pickup Matt Barnes, Anthony Parker, Trenton Hassell (( he might be the best choice anyway), Dantay Jones, Keith Bogins, Rashard McCants, Udoka and others are all availabe. We could also try to pry Andres Nocione from Sacto.
So if Grant Hill wants to play in NYC so his wife can sign, so be it. He will have plenty of time to watch her sing and still watch us in the 2010 Playoffs and Finals.

at least
this is easier to joke about now that we have Sheed. I’d be going nuts if he hadn’t committed yet

Grant is only going for the money.
Quite obvious…
Out of all the teams he could pick, he goes for New York. He’s obviously not interested in winning a ring… He’s pathetic, in my opinion.

Don't Overreact
These are just reports in the paper and on TV. We’re not privy to what Grant Hill and his family are thinking, nor their priorities.

Huh??
I don’t comment on this site too often, but I’m a big Grant Hill fan so I have to come to his defense on this one. “He’s pathetic” Really? We all know just about nothing of what’s going through his head. The man has made well over $100M in his career (and probably close to $200M including endorsements and investements), so I find it very hard to believe that he would choose the Knicks for a few million dollars more than the C’s. There could be other reasons that he wants to go to New York; its kind of the cultural center of the world. I hate NY (live in Wyoming right now), but I know dozens of people that love it. Maybe the man thinks its the best place to raise his kids; maybe its where his wife wants to live (and be treated for her MS); maybe he likes the goddam pizza. It doesn’t matter.
Grant Hill is one of those guys who has a lot going on other than basketball. He has an acclaimed collection of African American Artwork and is heavily involved in that community. He sponsors numerous scholarships.
We do not know these rumors are true, but even if true the guy is anything but pathetic. I’ll just try to give you a little more credit than your comment has shown that you deserve.

Well said...
It’s amazing how people bash a guy just because he said some nice things about NYC in response to a reporter’s questions.

Sure sounds like Baby's agent is feeding Tanguay over-breathless rumors of great market demand!

Agreed
Which would make sense to drive up the price if other teams didn’t have to worry about us matching the offer.

WEAK!
If he goes to NY i will have lost all respect for him
the guy obviosly doesn’t care about winning
Now, is there anything we can offer houston for Battier? That would be ideal
by OutofServicePervis on Jul 7, 2009 7:33 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I too would lose a TON of respect for him
if he decides to rot in NY/PHX

easy folks
we don’t know what Grant will do
I assume if NY offered him more than the bi-annual, he would have accepted already
not to pull a Tanguay or anything, but my best guess is that he still lands in Boston when all is said and done

Hill or Baby?
Not saying I have any idea what is going on in the Celtics organization, but maybe they realized that keeping Davis makes more sense than signing Grant Hill. Davis has a higher upside and could potentially be a Celtic for 10 years. Which would be great! Maybe there isn’t enough dough for both?
by funkstarrdeluxe on Jul 7, 2009 9:02 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not worried about 10 years
I think Danny’s concerned about who will help the team more next year, not who will be on the team in 10 years. As well he should. This team has a short window, and Davis is the kind of average player who it will be easy to replace once the window has closed.
Maybe Davis actually does help the team more next year than Hill — I agree that the team probably needs one more big. But they also need a backup SF, which would still be unfilled if they don’t get Hill.

Backup SF is the greater need now
and Grant Hill is the perfect fit for this team right now. He will have trouble guarding LeBron, but who doesn’t? Doc wants vets and the window is the next 2 years. Frankly, I might be satisfied with Scal as the 4th big off the bench than to have a gaping hole behind Paul Pierce.
by Surferdad on Jul 7, 2009 9:43 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
A SF/SG type player who can defend should be the priority. Hill may not be the best defender, but he’d still be a good option because he’ll make up for that with scoring. I’d be OK starting the season with Scal as the 4th big, and I wouldn’t even be surprised to see a little-known player named Mr. Leon Powe walking through that door around January. We need someone to spell Pierce more than we need a big who’s really only going to get 10 min per.

Grant Hill care about winning??
If he picks NY then I am glad he didn’t pick us. Shows he could care less about winning

spend wisely height size not width
I think instead of spending the money on Davis who is a short, the celtics can spend the money on a taller player .

Been burned once by Grant Hill
When Michael Jordan was retiring after taking Nike stock to great price, Fila signed the budding star Grant Hill to a big contract and I bought Fila stock. Several years of ankle woes brought Fila nothing. Lost about 80% on that one.
This guy has ankles of glass. One good year (of health, not game) behind him and a year older doesn’t get me excited. Nice guy, class act, still think Fila had a good plan, but his book is about games not played. How many mistakes can one franchise (Knicks) make. Who cares! As long as we don’t make it.

Ideally Walker or Giddens sticks for real back up minutes for PP
and we re-sign Baby.

Ideally I agree.
Losing BBD and gaining Wallace is net minus.

Early Bird Rights Question regarding Big Baby
What kind of salary can we offer Big Baby using his Early Bird Rights? The language of the collective bargaining agreement states (from wikipedia):
Early Bird exception
This is the lesser form of the Larry Bird Exception. Free agents who qualify for this exception are called “early qualifying veteran free agents,” and qualify after playing two seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. Using this exception, a team can re-sign its own free agent for either 175% of his salary the previous season, or the NBA’s average salary, whichever is greater. Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons, but can last no longer than five seasons.
That language makes me think that we can only offer him a contract offer starting at what amounts to the MLE, and that we can’t offer him a more reasonable contract with his Early Bird Rights, something in the 3-4 million dollar range, because of the language which states that it must be either a contract for 175% of his salary from the previous season, or the NBA’s average salary, whichever is greater. My reading, basically, is that we can only offer him what amounts to the MLE. Is that correct?
by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Jul 7, 2009 1:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nevermind
Stupid wikipedia left out “up to,” which I found when I read the actual language of the collective bargaining agreement. The Cs can sign Baby anywhere between the QO and the MLE.

God Forbid
that Grant Hill put anything, like his family, or the rest of his life, ahead of winning a championship. I would love to have him, but it’s his decision.

Grant Hill
Grant would be outta his mind to sign with NY and is only using them as leverage in negotiations with the Celts. I’m sure he would like to play for D’Antoni if no contender will sign him but lets be real.
