McDyess May Go To Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as the leader in the courtship of free agent forward Antonio McDyess, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
San Antonio is one of three teams offering the full mid-level exception over two years, sources said. No deal is imminent, but it's believed McDyess has offers from the Orlando Magic and possibly the Cleveland Cavaliers.
If true, that might cross another name off the "interested in Big Baby list." Interesting that McDyess is getting the same offers that Sheed got.

So BBD isn’t going there after all? Looking good for the Cs.

Perfect fit for Dice. Orlando is getting OWNED out there.. Cleveland is striking out as well..

I"m not so sure. Carter for Hedo is a major upgrade. no matter how much people hate carter, he can really play and any criticisms launched at him could have been said for Pierce up to 2 years ago. Ryan Anderson in the deal too, no slouch there.

I agree that Carter can play,
but Hedo held that offense together. And while I’ll be the first one to tell Toronto that they are way overpaying a guy who had a good playoffs, but a vastly inconsistent regular season, I think Orlando loses a lot of chemistry.
If Ryan Anderson starts at the four, I think they’re okay. But I would not be surprised to see this team struggle early on trying to fill in all the gaps from Hedo’s absence.

Upgrade, maybe, but a *major* upgrade?
They counted on Hedo for big shots throughout the playoffs and he delivered many times. In the series against the Cs he often got what he wanted against Pierce, and I was actually relieved to see him do the same to Cleveland and LA.

Carter is a major upgrade over Hedo … but losing Marcin Gortat, Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Tony Battie hurts them in a massive way.
Right now, the Magic are worse than they were last season. It’ll be very interesting to see how well they fill out that bench.

ryan anderson(came over in the carter-lee trade) went off today in summer league. 33 points 11 for 15, 3 for 3 on 3’s, 14 rebounds. he could be a very nice piece for their bench

Great news! Hopefully he goes to the spurs! Let LA have some competition! Also that would mean one option less for Davis…

come back to us, Baby
I’d even give Baby a contract like Scals (5 years, 15 million) to lock him up for a while at a fair price.
He’s not going to find any longer term deals this summer. Scals and Tony will soon be off the books.

I agree with Fred
Locking up BBD with a 5 yr, 3 mill per would be awesome.
I still think Orlando will make a puch. BBD could probably start at 4 for them
PG-Nelson
2G-Carter
WF-Lewis
PF-BBD
C-Super man

orlando only has 3-4 bench players
they need to add players and will likely split the MLE to do it. the only two teams that worry me about baby now are the grizzlies and hornets.

Lewis would probably stay at the four
And they would start Pietrus at the three if that was the scenario. Davis likely becomes the backup center, and Orlando then needs to sign a wing, which are a tad bit more plentiful than big men in the current environment. Your lineup could pan out, but I’m not sure whether Orlando is going to start Davis rather than go with a proven lineup.

Good...
I don’t want to see him on Orlando. This would make things harder on the Lakers, and potentially keep BBD in green.

Win, win, win
McDyess to Spurs means:
1. Better chance of BBD back in Boston for reasonable $.
2. Not signing with Cleveland, Orlando, or LA.
3. More competition for LA, make it tougher for them in the playoffs.

not so interesting
I don’t find it so interesting that McDyess received the same offer as Wallace. McDyess is arguably the better player. Last year, in fewer minutes, he averaged more rebounds (9.8 vs. 7.4) and shot a higher percentage (51% vs. 42%). McDyess grabbed 19.3% of available rebounds, while Wallace grabbed only 13.7%. Maybe Rasheed was just lazy last year; but maybe McDyess is a better player now.
by dslack on Jul 7, 2009 5:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Or it could mean only that McDyess was consistently playing closer to the basket, which generally will get you more rebounds and a higher shooting average. However, if your team wants you out on the perimeter, stretching out the offense, then it’s not necessarily an indictment of Wallace. (Although I wanted Gortat.)
by no kidding on Jul 7, 2009 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's called the MLE
They got the same offer, because the MLE is what’s available. It’s not like someone is going to go offer just a little under or over. All this means is that they have somewhat comparable value. I think most teams would pick Wallace given the choice, but it’s a mute point since there aren’t any teams choosing between the two really…
by BrianY on Jul 7, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you’re referring to Gortat, I especially wanted him since he’s a true center and young. And yes, the MLE was the upper limit of what was going to be spent. But then there’s the matter of years. And with Gortat, I thought the Celtics should’ve been open to a four or five year contract. Thankfully, Wallace is only expecting two.
If Gortat had been brought in, then Glen Davis and Scalabrine (and God willing, Leon Powe) could play back-up power forward. And then, there’s Perkins’ shoulder to be worried about. But I’m hardly slashing my wrists over the coming of Wallace.

McDyess was the Pistons best player last season. He was tremendous.

Surprising
I thought the Spurs would go for BBD because he plays really well against them. Defends Timmy very well.

Baby seems to defend all the quality bigs well...
which is exactly why we want him back (make it happen, Danny)
by Mencius on Jul 7, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think he does defend them well..
at least not quality bigs. Good bigs will shoot over BBD, and BBD can’t keep up with any quick PF (most especially on defensive switches where he has to get back to his man).
I watched that game against the Spurs and thought BBD did a serviceable job, but I don’t think it was considered above average. Does anyone have the stats from that game? I think Duncan still had like 27 pts and 13 reb…
by TomHamilton30 on Jul 7, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
defends Howard and Shaq reasonably well
If it’s one of the bigger bigs – who need to get right under the bucket to score – BBD is big and strong enough to keep them from getting position easily.
But you’re right that if it’s a taller big, someone with good finesse moves or someone who can shoot from 10 feet, he’s got trouble. I really wouldn’t want to see him guard Pau.
by Sophomore on Jul 7, 2009 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m sure they’d go for him, I just don’t think they want to pay him $5M+ and/or give him more than 2 or 3 years.
by Berkcelt on Jul 7, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
People may be worried about Davis weight
We’ve seen it before, when a guy with a history of weight problems gets a bigger contract that they’ve been working for they can slip back into bad habits. Now Davis isn’t going to get a monumental payday, but he certainly will feel more secure with whatever contract he finds, and teams might be weary that he’ll get a little too comfortable which is why it doesn’t seem as though he’s getting the offers he thought he might get.

The Spurs need way more than McD if they want to have a chance against the Lakers. Their defense has slipped alot the past couple of seasons. McDyess doesn’t help in that area very much. I still put the Nuggets and Mavericks (if they get Marion) ahead of them in the west.
by joeT123 on Jul 7, 2009 7:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You're forgetting Jefferson
They are vastly improved just with Jefferson playing for them. Adding McDyess, providing of course the injury bug does not hit, and they can beat anyone in the West.
I just don’t think at this stage they can play an entire season without injuries to key players. But if they’re healthy come the playoffs, I think they could beat the Lakers.
by amenhotep04 on Jul 7, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I totally agree...
The spurs are rapidly getting better. They’re going to be an extremely tough matchup if healthy. I’d honestly say that if they get McDyess then it’ll be a 3-way tie for the best team in the league (lakers, celtics, spurs). Trust me, I can’t stand the spurs (esp after the Duncan sweepstakes), but they’re making all the right moves this off-season. I’d be surprised if they offered BBD anything.

That's still a so-so frontcourt
McDyess is definitely a quality addition, but San Antonio simply doesn’t have the same depth in their frontcourt that the Lakers have. Bonner, Blair, or Haislip have to play at some point, especially considering Duncan’s and McDyess’ ages, and they’re going to get burned by any combination of Gasol, Bynum, or Odom. San Antonio’s best chance is their improvement on the wings and the fact the Lakers lost Ariza — arguably their best defender against Parker — for Artest, who can guard Jefferson or Ginobli. Question is then whether the Lakers’ advantage in the frontcourt outweighs Parker’s ability to blow by any of the Lakers’ point guards. Phil might actually field unorthodox lineups in that situation; for instance, a Kobe-Artest-Odom-Gasol-Bynum lineup would be hell of a defensive lineup (and a rather anemic offensive one depending on how well Odom is shooting from three).
I’d still give the Lakers the edge, but it would be hell of a WCF if that’s how it panned out and everyone was healthy.
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

Man, it seems every year
I want Joe Smith or Antonio McDyess to come here… and every year they seem to spur us and go to a rival who really needs them. Argh.
by alskor on Jul 7, 2009 8:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i am not forgetting Jefferson, they stunk last season and got embarassed by a Mavericks team that isn’t all that good, yes they didn’t have Ginobili but they would have lost anyway. Jefferson makes them better and is insurance for Ginobili as well but this isn’t the same Spurs team. Their defense has slipped alot they need another big to play alongside Duncan that can defend. The Lakers would kill them inside like they did in the 2008 WCF.
