Celtics Hub says that Coby Karl, JR Giddens, and Gabe Pruitt looked good while Hudson, Fazekas, and Swift did not.

‘Celtics’ screwed up on the defense in the fourth quarter

by Nowee on Jul 7, 2009 7:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i'd say a pretty fair assessment

i thought swift looked ALOT better than yesterday, but you’d be better of with Brian Skinner without a doubt.

there were 4 clear nba players on the floor today

ryan anderson, karl, and pruitt, and to a lesser extent giddens.

I’m not so sure I would say that Karl is an NBA player. He can definitely shoot. But he got burned a lot defensively, and he couldn’t throw a pass to save his life.

Giddens looked very good. Gabe seemed a bit more comfortable out there as well. I don’t know what Gabe’s overall numbers were, but I felt bad that he was forced to take two shots at the end of quarters that he had no chance of making.

Ryan Anderson was pretty amazing.

I’d like to know if there was anything to Walker and Sweetney not playing. Walker was dressed to play, but Sweetney was not.

the goofball announcing team said sweetney hurt his hamstring. they speculated that it was just a day the coaches decided to pull walker so they could see other guys.

giddens looked very athletic, not exactly always purposeful out there. i didn’t think gabe looked that good either. but it’s summer league, it’s kind of a mess.

I didn’t hear them say that about Sweetney, but I did hear the Walker comment. Actually that was my email question to them. They did say they were not privy to that information, and that it is not unusual for players to sit a game. I just found it interesting that Walker would sit. Now if tomorrow Giddens sits and Walker plays all those minutes, then it would make sense to me. I would have thought that both Giddens and Walker needed as much time on the court as possible.

Perhaps the coaches were thinking they’d better sit one of them down on alternate days. If they kept playing both in all the games, neither one might ever settle down and actually pass the ball at some point.

I thought maybe Bill had taken Sweetney out for a few meals and hadn’t returned yet.

Bill was out with an injury per Cs twitter page

They didn’t give any details other than a back injury. It’s probably not serious though, or he wouldn’t have been on the bench.

who says karl needs to defend to be an nba player?

just because the Cs play D doesn’t mean many others do.

Hmm, thought that was kind of the Celtics whole M.O…

If Swift keeps improving at the rate that he did from game one to game two, then by the time training camp rolls around, he’ll be all-league.

Seriously though, he might work out as the third string center, last guy on the bench. (Or would you rather invite back Mikki Moore?) Hey, they need the bucks to resign Davis.

The announcers sound like a cheesy morning radio show.

I watched the game and thought that Hudson didn’t look as good as yesterday. He turned the ball over a couple of times into easy Orlando baskets. He also seemed content to jack up quick shots rather than driving like he did yesterday.

I have noticed that there is barely any ball movement in these games. Probably because they haven’t played together enough.

Karl did look quite good and played very hard. Pruitt finally showed some aggression, driving to the hoop with regularity and even dunking on someone at one point (there are no replays so it was hard to tell).

Giddens looks good but also turned the ball over and is playing with raw athleticism.

Walker did not play and I tend to think it’s because he’s got his roster spot locked up and they want to see others. If I am not mistaken, they shut Rondo down too during his summer league appearance a couple years ago.

Swift had a couple of decent plays and looked like his head was in it a lot more than yesterday.

Rogers seemed to be involved with most possessions and was solid. I am interested to see more of him.

Rondo played one game and then didn’t play the rest of the summer. That was also after he had played for a good part of the season his rookie year. He was already slated to be the starting point guard for the following season. It was surprising that Rondo was even there that year. So this is a different situation. You may be right, but I wouldn’t compare it to Rondo’s.

"barely any ball movement"

Surprised? It’s because these guys are fighting for jobs so they’re jacking the ball up whenever thy get the chance. That’s a well-known problem with SL.

If Swift keeps blocking shots and protecting the lane (I loved his hard foul) he will be in the NBA. The Celtics defense fell apart when they took Swift out.

I thought every other Celtic big man looked awful defensively, and some of the perimeter defenders couldn’t keep their men under control either.

Agreed Brick, at times it looked like summer offensive drills in football. I couldn’t believe how bad some of the guys were getting beat.

A Brandon Wallace sighting.

Perhaps it’s just nostalgia, but I wish we had Brandon Wallace back on this summer league squad. I read that he’s out in Las Vegas playing for the Washington Wizards’ squad. I like to be somewhat sure that he isn’t an improvement over either Walker or Giddens as a Pierce defensive backup.

by no kidding on Jul 7, 2009 8:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was just thinking again how useful it might be to have lanky 6’9" Brandon Wallace, out on the perimeter for eight minutes at a time, substituting for Pierce, defending guys like Lamar Odom or Rashard Lewis. With those long arms of his, a lot of perimeter shots could be affected.

giddens performance was overrated

he had the ball in his hands all day, and how many points did he have? so he hit two 16 footers. — big deal.

Not particularly Impressed with anyone

I did see anyone who can help us this year. It was a pretty ragged game. There were some highlight type plays, but no ball movement, pathetic defense, and poor rebounding.

Giddens showed some athleticism taking the ball to the hole. He can jump out of the gym,. but so could Gerald Green. I just don’t see him playing much this year.

Pruitt looks real pretty shooting but can’t hit a foul line jumper. Could some tell me if he had any assists, cuz I don’t remember any? He had a couple of highlight plays, but really didn’t do much. I can’t see us relying on him as a backup pg. This is his 3rd year and he should be dominating this league and he isn’t. I think his only value to us is as an expering contract if we make a deal.

Karl was worthless. He had a phony 18-20 pts. He hit a couple of 3s but missed a bunch of layups, messed up a 2-on-1 break with Giffens, couldn’t make a decent pass to save his soul and missed some free throws. And defensively, maybe he can guard a chair, but I could be wrong about that if the chair has wheels. I was not impressed at all. He’s a D Leaguer.

I’m not sure about Swift, he looked slow, but did block several shots and stayed in the post area. I guess if we lose BBD he could be a 3rd center. It’s kind of hard to see what he can do in the post offensively because no one ever fed his the ball.

Hudson, showed some athleticism and was physical but didn’t get much accomplished. I do think he was the only guy who played with any passion. He tried to take a charge, knocked someone down trying for a steal and, at times, was a pest defensively.

I didn’t see a lot of passion (except for Hudson), guys going all out to show what they can do and that they want to make this team. Hell, we have a chance a World Championship and are looking for role players. Do these guys need a written invitation to play hard? If KG had been watching this game he’d have ripped somebody’s head off.

All in all a pretty poor game.

Forget about what KG did to BBD

KG would make the team AND the coaches cry! Oh mannnnn. XD
