Starbury Is Done In Boston; Eyeing Europe
Stephon Marbury told The Post last night he won't be returning to the Celtics and is eyeing Europe stronger than ever. . . .
The Celtics have told Marbury they are not going to re-sign him after netting Rasheed Wallace.

foregone conclusion
He played so poorly last year I don’t see how it could have gone any other way. An offensive minded PG who can’t make a shot and was hesitant to even do so… not the best fit for us.

The perfect place for him is Dynamo Moscow unless there are pro teams in Siberia.

Not surprising given his play. Oddly enough, he never was on the court with KG.
That old saying that everyone is replaceable is especially true here. Marbury is replaceable.

Previously it was reported that we offered him a contract. But he put it this way: We offered him the minimum, he thought that was not worthy and now plays it like we never offered him a contract and that we didn’t want him after we signed Rasheed. I mean, was he expoecting to get the MLE from us?

Hopefully we don't go out and sign Tryonn Lue now... Ne miracle way we could sign Andre Miller lol.

Agree, Mike-Dub
There are actually some on this blog who think Tyron Lue would be valuable to the Celts. I’m with you. We don’t need anyone else’s 3rd string PG. We can make do with our own.

Too Bad for Him
He coulda had a good season and a great chance to play with us. Now he’ll have to settle for some world travel. At least there won’t be any pressure on him now. He can start hucking shots …

Backup PG
My first choice would be Ronnie Price. I think he is capable of becoming a very good backup point. Unfortunately for him, he was behind Deron Williams. My second choice would probably be Bobby Jackson, although there are plenty of other free agent veterans floating around, including Jacque Vaughn, Kevin Ollie, Tyron Lue, Damon Jones, Luther Head (a younger version of Eddie House, not a true point, however), Lindsey Hunter, Earl Boykins (fun to watch)
Players I do NOT want include Brevin Knight (whiner, can’t shoot), Gordan Giricek (he still plays like a Clipper), Carlos Arroyo (can’t defend a chair), Marcus Williams (ditto)
by Brickowski on Jul 9, 2009 11:33 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I definitely thought Marcus Williams was going to the the PG steal of that 2006 draft class. I even liked him more then Rondo at the time … but was quick to jump on board, mind you, because I trust DA’s draft judgment much more then my own.

I like Price too
he did the best he could in limited minutes

Am I the only one getting really nervous?
I mean there are now no good options left at the wing besides grant hill and matt barnes. Dahntay Jones, Quinton Ross, and Anthony Parker all appear to be going else where. Matt Barnes doesn’t like cold weather, and Grant Hill’s wife in love with new york, who also happens to be offering 3 times as much money as we can.
Maybe this will speed up the process in terms of trades with TA and Scali, but unless its for a wing we can’t afford to give up either of them.

Plenty of Wing Options
Marquis Daniels, Von Wafer, Zoolander, Keith Bogans, Mickael Gelabale (a young player I like), Desmond Mason…the list goes on.
by Brickowski on Jul 9, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But the list is relatively lousy
We can get someone midseason if no one steps up from the TA/Walker/Giddens three.
by Wildblu1 on Jul 9, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
tony, giddens and walker
are NOT the answer to getting PP rest. they proved that last year. tony allen is sorry…walker cant play defense and giddens is too small
by celticinorlando on Jul 9, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wait until training camp
TA did a respectable job until suffering multiple injuries (sprained ankle in Dec, sprained ankle in Jan.—which eventually led to offseason ankle surgery, torn thumb ligaments in Feb). Walker COULD have given PP some rest if Doc would have played him more often. With a year’s more development, hopefully he shows enough to gain Doc’s trust.
Giddens is more of a 2 guard—but his long arms and great athleticism could allow him to compete defensively at small forward.
by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Jul 9, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Agree
I think TA did do a respectable job prior to the injuries. The problem was that he’s not a good fit for Eddie. So Eddie at the one with TA out there nullified much of what Eddie can contribute offensively.
If Doc incorporates either Walker or Giddens into the rotation I think they will provide some needed energy. But I really think that a one through three of Gabe, Eddie, and JR playing together, pressing on defense could create a lot of havoc for many of the opposing teams (not all). I think Doc really needs to press with the second unit.
by amenhotep04 on Jul 9, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree too
I’m done with hoping for TA to turn it on, he’s been in the league too long for that to happen. The guy I would want to keep, unless we get someone very good in return, is Scal. He really played great down the stretch last season, he can give us some solid minutes, play good D, and stretch the floor. T

i dont think we are going to get anything out of a bench
that has to depend on tony allen, pruitt, scal, giddens and walker. those 5 (maybe not scal) are weal links. i don’t think walker will be anything more than a great athlete. but him being able to give PP the serious rest time he needs just doesn’t work out IMO…giddens is too small…i would be just fine with boston being able to get rid of pruitt, waljer, giddens and tony…i have watched summer league and walker and giddens look just like they did last season against crap competition…

A house/TA backcourt struggled...
because neither of them is a point guard and both struggle mightily when asked to do point guard things—though TA was superior to House in most point guard duties, it was asking too much of TA to be the de facto point guard on the 2nd unit…
It was no coincidence that when TA got injured, and Pruitt put at point, and House moved off-the-ball that the ENTIRE 2nd unit started to play well (Baby and Powe both took off in January). That’s why having Marbury was a good thing—he allowed the rest of the 2nd unit to play up to their ability. The one hurt most by Marbury leaving is TA, followed by House, because now both of those players will be asked to play more of a playmaking role, which as we’ve seen is not a good thing.
Going forward, the possible signing of Grant Hill would be great because it would allow him to be the de facto point guard, and allow TA/House to focus more on scoring. If no Hill, we’ll either need to sign another backup point, or play Pruitt…
The House/TA backcourt needs to be put to bed….they don’t play well together and their incompetence at playing point guard impacts the entire 2nd team’s ability to play well…

If the Cs could get Desmond Mason for the $ they have to offer, would you take him over Hill?
How about Marquis Daniels. Just interested to hear opinions.

Ainge scares me...
When he does something stupid….like offer $1.3M to Marbury!
I never believed the rumor that Washington—-or any other NBA team—-offered a contract to Marbury.

And Why Do You Believe That Danny Offered Marbury A Contract?
Maybe he did and maybe he didn’t. As one who didn’t want Marbury here I would have liked to see him come back and get a training camp under his belt. But, I think Marbury really wants more playing time than he would get here and it’s good that he realized that.

It's not about the money!
I haven’t attacked Hill’s wife, but I have found amusement in that (admittedly) small part of the Grant Hill story line. It’s rare that you get to hear a new rationalization for why someone wants to go to one city as opposed to others (and of course, it’s never about the money).
I remember I getting months of entertainment years ago when Shaq kept saying that one of his main concerns in leaving Orlando for Los Angeles was that he wanted to further advance his dual careers as a movie star and rapper.

Marbury looked like
he was walking in quicksand most of the time and he was pick pocketed more than once at center court – embarrassing.

So I guess Sheed can play pg too? Impressive!

He can!
He is just ridiculous at point. Detroit never used him correctly, and they should have let him bring the ball up court… His handling and court vision as second only to Rondo’s, which means we will now have the 2 best point guards in the game.
Does anyone have Chris Paul’s number? We could use him!

I guess Celtics fans and Knick fans agree on one thing
Starbury is all about Starbury and he is finished in the NBA.

It looks like i'm in the minority here..
But I would have liked to have marbury back for the vet min if he would’ve took it. When he was out there was when Eddie was at his best, any other time Eddie was handling the ball too much and not getting open.
by jbowen on Jul 9, 2009 1:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Second that
I think with more time in the Celts system and more time working on his shot, he would have been a great backup option at PG for the vet min. Oh well, guess we’ll never know.

You could have had the same result with any competent NBA backup point guard. So if Marbury is so good, what isn’t a single other NBA team interested? Why is he being shopped in Europe? Could it be that NBA teams got some tape of his play last year?
by Brickowski on Jul 9, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed with Brick
Even Iverson has a team interested in him, the ball hog and team detonator that he is. If he can get a team interested in him, no matter how high in the lottery are or how desperate, why can’t Marbury? Heck, Memphis, you got your 2’s, here’s your 1 player off the bench! Come on, you know it!
But yeah…if Marbury really wants to start….oh well. Euroleague it is. Have fun, Marbury, don’t forget to write and stuff….even though I may write back about how well the Celtics are doing…without you… : )
by Tai on Jul 9, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Iverson isn’t much better than Marbury. He unexplicably puts people in seats. Marbury doesn’t. But if your goal is to win games, these are about the last two guys (along with Tank Carter) you’d want on your roster.
by Finkelskyhook on Jul 9, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely agree with UGotRondo'd...
Other teams aren’t looking at him cuz he wants to be a starter and wants too much money… If he came to his senses and realized the great oppurtunity he has here… With a trainning under his belt… Getting to shake off his rust in the offseason… Have more time in our system… And learn from his experience here last year along with get to play wih KG I am about 100 percent sure Marbury would have been a great back up point for us this year… But he has decided that he wants to be a starter and wants the money more so than a ring.
