Big Baby and Shelden Press Conference Today
The Celtics held a press conference at 11:45 today with Glen Davis, Shelden Williams and Danny Ainge, clearly to announce the rumored BBD signing and welcome Shelden. Baby signed for 2-years for a total of $6.3 million (as rumored), Williams signed for the one year at $1.3 million (per the Globe, an earlier version of the story apparently incorrectly noted Shelden signed for the $1.9m bi-annual exception). Our own Roy Hobbs points out that, actually the one-year contract for a veteran of Williams' tenure should really be around $850,000. Way to be Globe.
Update -- Official word from the Celtics
The Boston Celtics announced today that the club has re-signed forward Glen Davis to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Glen has been a big part of our success for the past two years and we are very excited to have him back," said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations.
And quotes from the press conference via the Globe
- "I think we're much better," Ainge said. "The Lakers and Cleveland are getting better. And we've improved."
- Davis has experienced an offseason that was sometimes "frustrating," as he awaited offers as a restricted free agent.
- "You have to realize, as much as the NBA is full of entertainment, it's a business," Davis said. "You got to keep that in mind.
- Said Davis: "I'll be ready to go out and play, do whatever it takes."
- "Shelden has proven he can defend and rebound," Ainge said. "Offensively, he hasn't come around as well but it's about getting the opportunity in this league."
- From the Herald: "There was a point in time that I thought I wasn't going to come back," Davis said. "I was telling my girlfriend, ‘Hey, we gotta pack. It's time to go.' There was a point in time then, but it's so funny how things change so quickly. I'm happy to be back here."

For a guy that’s been in the league only two years there sure seems to be a lot of great pictures of Big Baby out there.
I think this gives us two young player to play in the paint. With Clifford Ray working his magic with these two young guy’s and what we already have if a team is not shooting lights out it will be extreamely hard for any team to beat us. CONGRADULATIONS DANNY!!
Sign Bruice Bowen not Daniels “Daniels is to fragile”
Can't Do It
1. Daniels and the Celtics have an oral agreement and are just waiting to see if a sign and trade are available.
2. Daniels would be a much better sub for Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.
"I don't come to play, I come to WIN"--Larry Bird
"Criminally Negligent Officiating"--Tommy Heinsohn
Daniels cant back up Pierce and Allen at the same time
I say we sign both players
Probably would not happen
I suspect they will only go with a 14 man roster leaving a space open. Little room at the inn
Agree on Hudson but not necessarily on Bowen
The team will rarely have all 5 starters sitting on the bench (unless it’s a blowout). I think doc will go with either Pierce or Allen playing with the subs (as he has done in the past) so there’s really not a need for both Bowen and Daniels.
Doesn't Have To
He can take turns or Marquis can back up Pierce and Daniels Ray. I really don’t see the need for Bruce Bowen on this team. Can’t see how he fits. We have other more important needs such as a true pg backup and a just in case big Big for Perk. Signing Baby helps here as does Sheed, but I’d rather not see Sheed at Center except in certain situations.

did you just split up Marquis Daniels' name and count him as 2 players??
by scurvmeister on Aug 10, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes I Did
It was meant to be a joke, but I guess a bad one. I’m just saying he can play the 2 or 3 as these positions don’t mean much anymore. Pierce and Ray, especially Ray are all over the place. There will just be alot of flexibility here.

Great to have BBD settled in green. I think this will be good for all parties.

BBD & Sheldon Williams get signed before M. Daniels?
How will M. Daniels be apart of our team, and who will Danny have to trade
to make that happen?
No One
There is a roster space for Daniels. No trade is necessary. There is an agreement between both parties and we are only waiting to see if a sign and trade can be done so Daniels can be paid more.

But hopefully we can do something to get it down to 14, just to give us some wiggle room, if needed, at the trade deadline.
"I don't come to play, I come to WIN"--Larry Bird

I would rather have Hudson and a 14-man roster
What’s the downside? He will be a cheap rookie contract and learning from the C’s coaching staff, not some Euro team’s staff.
The downside is wasting money (x2 with lux tax) that we can save for someone who can contribute.
If he goes to Europe, that will probably mean that we renounced his rights, so it would make no difference to us who he would learn from.
by guava_wrench on Aug 10, 2009 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions
The flaw with that logic is
signnig a vet PG will cost more than signing Hudson so it would be an even worse lux tax hit. Why bother with a washed up Carter, Lue, etc? This team now has enough firepower to win it all, so let’s also put some attention on the future:
Rondo
Perkins
Baby
Daniels
Williams
Walker
Giddens
Hudson
Pretty good young core, eh?
i am saying 15
rondo
ray
PP
KG
Perk
Sheed
eddie
baby
sheldon
walker
daniels
giddens
tony (which makes me sick)
scal

Hudson in Europe?
I have heard DA saying Hudson may play in Europe. Do they retain the rights for him if that happens?
I believe we have until September(?) to sign Hudson. If he were to sign a deal in Europe before the deadline, we would retain his rights. I image there is a zero % chance that happens, since he would rather wait and become a free agent.
I’m sure we could sign him to a deal, and then work out something where he plays abroad for a year and plays for us next year under that contract. But has anyone ever done that yet in the history of the NBA?

Not necessarily
http://www.nbpa.com/cba_articles/article-X.php#section4
Section 4. Negotiating Rights to Draft Rookies.
(a) A Team that drafts a player shall, during the period from the date of such NBA Draft (hereinafter, the "Initial Draft") to the date of the next Draft (hereinafter, the "Subsequent Draft"), be the only Team with which such player may negotiate or sign a Player Contract, provided that, on or before the July 15 immediately following the Initial Draft (for a First Round Pick), or in the two (2) weeks before the September 5 immediately following the Initial Draft (for a Second Round Pick), such Team has made a Required Tender to such player. If a Team has made a Required Tender to such a player and the player has not signed a Player Contract within the period between the Initial Draft and the Subsequent Draft, the Team that drafted the player shall lose its exclusive right to negotiate with the player and the player will then be eligible for selection in the Subsequent Draft.
(d) If a player is drafted by a Team in either an Initial or Subsequent Draft and that Team does not make a Required Tender to such player, the player will become a Rookie Free Agent on the July 16 following such Draft (for a First Round Pick) or on the September 6 following such Draft (for a Second Round Pick).
I’m not sure how Danny thinks he can work this out apart from making the tender, and then asking the player to not sign the tender and to play in Europe instead. If I’m the player, I sign the tender.

Or Nate Robinson, or Ramon Sessions
Just asking
i love nate robinson but thats only possible via trade he makes 5 to 6 mill i guess walker/giddens tony scal for robinson but no1 is gonna give him up 4 that. hes one of the best sixth men in the league
Heh, no kidding
Not that I care about these kind of people, but you know those same people who think we ripped off everyone by being able to get the Big 3, despite who we gave up? They’ll be honking their horns again if we somehow got Robinson for Tony, Scal and Walker/Giddens.
BBD's head is bigger than Walker and Giddens' combined.

Williams @ bi-annual?
That seems more than I thought it would be? Am I wrong there?
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
Williams' Contract
I just read in the Boston globe “Celticsblog” that Williams’ contract was for the bi-annual exception? Is this true? and if so does it effect Daniel’s deal?
Oh wait
Jeff just put up Williams DID take the BAE…
Did Mr. Ainge get a S+T for Daniels?! O_O’ That’d rock!
I put it up, but got that info from the Globe article as well. That’s why I questioned it here
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
either a mistake or burying the lead
if that’s not a mistake, something is happening with a S&T
I can’t believe that Daniels is going anywhere but here
either way, the Globe dropped the ball on that news because if it is the Bi-Annual then they need to make a much bigger deal about it
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" Henry V
Oh..
Excuse me, I need to read more clearly. : (
I don’t know what else to tell ya. If the Globe said it’s true, I’m not sure what else can counter that. BAE worth $1.9M? I don’t think a mistake was made.
Right now, I’m gonna assume this:
A) Ainge was confident enough to get a S+T for Daniels to let Williams have the BAE.
B) Well…has far as FA signing, the Celtics may very well call it a day. If a S+T truly happens, depending on how many players we give up, we have 2 or 3 roster spots open. Hudson’s almost guaranteed to come to training camp, now, cause I don’t know many veteran backup PGs and what nots would come for the BAE, let alone the vet. minimum.
Right now, my two cents.
Danny is looking old...

interesting photo
Danny aged 15 more years, BBD finally is starting to look thinner, and Shelden’s forehead is bigger than my whole head.
I still don’t get why the Celtics didn’t just sign BBD for $2m / year. 6.3 is overpaying IMO, but I’m glad this whole fiasco is over. Hopefully I don’t have to hear about BBD anymore.
If BBD really looks thinner
Then I guess it’s a good sign he’s been in the gym lately. : )

You don't understand the way negotiations often unfold
If Danny tried to hardball Baby into a 2 million dollar contract, Baby would either hold out, or eventually sign some team’s offer sheet for something above 2 million (because Baby would go to the other team and say—they only offering me 2 mil, can you do better?). What’s the point? SIgn him to a reasonable deal and keep him happy? He’s clearly worth 3 million a year and it’s not even a debate…

Yup it's likely Scal
because Bird needs a sub for the injured Hansborough, and Tony Allen is a leper
It does matter because Scal is very valuable at the trade deadline and...
he’s not bad for a 5th big.
TA however, is almost useless with Daniels in the fold.
Everything you said about Scal applies to TA
by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Aug 10, 2009 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions
including being a 5th big? lol
I guess you mean a 5th wing, but whatever I suppose. It’s actually both contracts together that are valuable at the trade deadline. Combined they are somewhere around the MLE so that means a very good player, but also one with multiple years left, otherwise the trading team has no reason to trade.
I'm not buying it...

..Davis, 23, signed a two-year deal worth $6.3 million. Williams, 25, a one-year veteran’s minimum contract worth $1.3 million.
good. maybe my email asking what the deal was provoked the change.
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
They're still wrong, of course...
The minimum for Williams is $855,189, of which the Celtics pay $825,497.
Only vets with 10+ years experience earn $1.3 million as the minimum.

Williams, 25, who received a one-year veteran’s minimum contract worth $855,189, and Rasheed Wallace are the Celtics’ unrestricted free agent signings.
All the negativity in this town sucks. It sucks, and it stinks, and it sucks. - Rick Pitino
Good for Baby
I think he will come to realize that that is a fair deal. You really can’t command the MLE unless you show solid performance (as he did in the playoffs) over an entire season. He is a victim of circumstance playing behind KG and Perk, but of couse that’s a big reason why he has a ring.
If Sheldon took the vet min, then there may not be a S&T with Indy.

Even our posters with very, very limited knowledge of the salary cap know the salary cap better than the Celtics writers. They should pay us for straightening them out. I bet that woud’ve stayed up there if 10 CBloggers didn’t email it to them.
Also, as Roy pointed out, they’re still wrong.
Ainge Looks Like He Has Aged 10 Years
Did anyone else notice that?
Looking at DA
It looks like he just wants to say “screw it”, throw the BAE at Daniels, then play “Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day for the rest of the off-season. : )
Not Ainge
That’s not the real DA in the photo. That’s his long lost brother. The real DA took the first flight out of town on another vacation after the BBD deal was done.
If that old man sitting at the end of the table was really DA, then it proved the press conference was hastily called — they didn’t allow time for DA to put on make up
