Cavs sign Leon but Ainge still made the right decision
Anyone who follows the Celtics is saddened by the news that Leon Powe will not be re-signed by the Celtics and was signed by their East rivals the Cleveland Cavaliers. They have every reason to be upset. Powe was a major factor in the championship won by the Celtics back in 2008.
James Posey was also a major factor in that championship. Did fans call for Danny Ainge to resign James Posey last off-season? Yes. Did Ainge do so? No. Granted, the circumstances were a little different. Posey was coming off a career year and looking for a big contract. Powe is coming off another major injury and there are questions on whether or not he can ever be the same.
In 2008, when the Celtics lost Posey, it was a huge hit for the team. Posey was our sixth man off the bench and really was the energy guy as well. I don't blame Ainge for not re-signing him at the price he got from New Orleans. I do wish however that Ainge addressed the loss in some other way. Corey Maggette almost wore Green, but ended up going to Golden State instead. That left the Celtics with a major void off the bench going into the season.
The difference between last off-season and this off-season is that Ainge has addressed most (still no PG) of the needs of the team. He has signed Rasheed Wallace and re-signed Glen Davis. Also, in a more minor move, he signed Shelden Williams. The loss of Leon Powe from a statistical standpoint has been made up and then some. To be honest, I can't see Leon Powe having much of an impact on the Cavaliers success this season anyways. I know that he is one of the most mentally and physically strong people in the league, but if he won't be healthy enough to practice or play until after the All-Star break, how much of an affect on the team can he have? He won't be familiar with the team's style of play and he will need to slowly be worked into the rotation.
One of the hot topics at the start of the off-season was whether to re-sign Glen Davis, Leon Powe, or both. They chose Glen Davis based on the fact that their window of opportunity is these next two years. I'll admit I was one of the people who said to re-sign Powe for half the price and let Davis go. If Powe was healthy, I'd still be saying that, but the fact remains that he is not. Davis is healthy and able to play important minutes right now when called upon.
Some people say that we dumped a great guy in Powe for a lousy end of the bench roster spot like Lester Hudson or Shelden Williams. They may have a valid point, but as of today both of those players are more valuable to us then Leon Powe is. The last time I checked we didn't have too many point guards. Also, Williams may not be a very flashy guy, but along with Scalabrine he is a body that we can use off the bench and ads depth. Guys like Kendrick Perkins, Sheed, and KG, could get into early foul trouble, and it is important to have enough big bodies off the bench to make up for that.
It is a shame that it had come to this, and hopefully this doesn't give the Celtics too much of a black eye from a PR perspective. Players do know that this is a business. I don't expect players to look at the Powe situation and say that they aren't loyal to their players. When a player goes down with a major injury months before he is hitting free agency, how can you expect the team to re-sign that player if they are trying to win a championship in the next two years? It just wasn't the right time or place for Leon Powe in Boston. It's tough to put your brain in front of your heart, but as a GM, that is what Ainge's job is. As fans, it's easy for us to get attached to a player like Leon Powe. He is and always will be a class act in this league and if he can stay healthy he will be playing for years to come.
Who knows, maybe the Cavs will cut ties with Powe at the end of the season. If not, he becomes a free agent at the same time Glen Davis does... and maybe the Celtics are faced with the same decision they faced this off-season. Hopefully they chose the right one this season, and choose the right one then.
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

The Celtics
felt with the limited window that a healthy Williams was better than a broken down Powe.
Sound decision IMO.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
celts did,nt do the right thing with powe ?
how can anybody say that lester hudson is going to have a impact on the celtics over powe. yeah powe would not be ready until feb or march to play but it was a low risk if he came back and didnt play well because his knees were still bad then cut ties with him at the end of the year who knows maybe the cavs send him packing after this season and he is a free agent next year now if he is healthy does ainge look to sign him ??
wrong jimmyt
It’s the way that it was done. There is nothing wrong with bettering the team. Which Danny did. The said part of this is Powe would accepted the same salery he got from cleveland. If what Danny did was right why did he try and sign Powe when he heard Cleveland was going to sign him. Powe’s medical situation has not changed..meaning the situation is still up in the air, but Danny tried to sign him before Cleveland got to him. If Danny was right “as you seem to beleive” why not let cleveland squander there money
POWE IS SIGNING WITH CLEVELAND TODAY
whats wrong?
If you agree with bettering the team and agree with ainge’s decision, then what would you have done differently about the situation if you were ainge? Everybody assumes that because the cavs signed powe he must be a steal. The cavs are run by the same gm who wouldn’t include szczerbiak in a deal to bring shaq in at the deadline last season. I’m not sold on any moves he makes.
All any of us know about the fact the celtics tried to take him from cavs is through a beat writer’s twitter. I’ll wait and see if anyone else confirms it before I believe it. When the celts told powe early on that they weren’t interested, there were still a lot of questions with our bigs. We needed guys who are healthy and we have them.
People are already writing off shelden williams before practices and preseason even begin, something that leon powe will not be partaking in. If we are to rest our big guns like kg perk and sheed, we will need depth.
Leon went to the cavs because they have many nationally televised games and are a playoff lock. It was a good business decision by him and nothing more.

I'LL TELL YOU WHAT'S WRONG
Powe is a steal…This is the other side. if Money is the only reason for us being together I want all I can get.
YOU HAVE MISSED THE REASON WHY THE CELTICS ARE THE CELTIS
Yeah..
What if DA thought Powe would be available by mid-season? Powe already knows all the defensive schemes, all it’d take from him is to get into NBA playing shape by around February. For all we know, the Cavs remembered what Powe did to them last year at the Garden (the game without KG?) and signed Powe just to keep him away from us. We don’t know if Powe will really be effective.
Powe won’t get enough minutes this year to make it worth wasting a roster spot for more than half the season. He won’t play more than perk kg sheed or davis. It makes more sense to have shelden williams for the whole year then powe for half, since both would probably average the same minutes.
Ya powe knows defensive schemes but he was always late rotating on defense. Also its easier said than done to get back into nba shape just like that.

ainge made a mistake by not offering powe an offer sheet before free agency. but what is done is done. we improved in the offseason none the less
: "Rip? Oh, he was funny, man. He said, ‘Boston? Dang man, Boston?’ I said, ‘Hey, you got to go with the flow.’"—F Rasheed Wallace, on the reaction of former Detroit teammate Rip Hamilton to his signing with the Celtics
Just like you can`t teach HEIGHT...
You also cannot teach HEALTH.
That is why Leon is an ex-Celtic.
comparing sheldon williams and powe
by their career number we have:
Williams ____________ Powe
Minutes 14.7 _____________ 14.6
Blocks .4 ________________ .4
Points 4.7 ________________ 6.6
Reb (off) 4.2 (1.3) __________ 4.2 (1.8)
FG% .447 ________________ .523
Efficiency + 5.62 ___________ + 6.00
So these numbers show that Powe, even though being he was on a much better team than Williams with less shots going around, was a more efficient scorer and offensive rebounder than williams. I do concede that he would miss the first half of the season but also think that it is going to take most of that time for sheldon to understand his rotations on defense.
Add this to powe having playoff experience, already knowing the defensive schemes, and his work ethic on the court I feel that Powe is an overall slightly better player than Williams even if we can only have him for half the season.
to be honest this was a great move for powe. if he can come back before the allstar break 100% then he will have a chance to start at PF. why? the cavs current PF cant score. Powe can score and play defense. he was stuck at PF with the celtics. there are not that many minutes to go around at PF for powe unless someone gets hurt. pow will be number three at the cavs but once he shows he is strong then he will start come playoffs. watch what i say. verajeho (i think thats how you spell it) is alright defensevly but pow has so much more potential then verajeho..
No one doubts the least riskier move was not to sign Powe at this time. My question is, Why is Danny so sloppy defending his intelligent decision? He as made an jackass of himself with his unfortunate comments that not even he himself believes… Well maybe he does, and that make sit so much more laughfable(sic). I wish he would just shut up his mouth about this subject.
