Is The Answer An Option?

I don't know of any published rumors linking the Celtics with the Allen Iverson, but he's still out there, Danny has shown an interest in him in the past, and well, ...it is slow around here (besides, many of you have already brought this up).  So here's a topic to debate.

Should Ainge sign Allen Iverson if he agreed to come here for what we have left to offer?

My detailed thoughts after the break.

Star-divide

I'm against it!

From a talent perspective..

Of course. From a team chemistry standpoint, AI is not still not a bench player in his mind..So no.,

by BWC on Aug 14, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions

We shudda signed Leon

Just kidding!

I always loved watching AI. He comes to play and causes many OMIGODs while he’s on court. But, I have a nutty bias against tats. (In fact you should do a blog on the best-worst tatted players.) Mikki leaving was going to bring our aggregate tat count down and AI would bring it right back up. And it is hard to imagine AI dishing to Eddie or Rasheed except as a last resort. So I voted NO.
But the little bugger can play defense when he wants to (and he would want to/have to on this team) and he is exciting.

by Wildblu1 on Aug 14, 2009 6:00 PM EDT reply actions

why not?

I was against bring Marbury in because I thought he would kill the team chemistry. He did not. He was, however, a bit rusty and didn’t contribute much anyways.

If Iverson agreed to come here for what we had left to offer, which isn’t much, why would we say no to that? Is the other option doing nothing? Because I’d rather have Iverson then nobody else.

Worst case scenario is he doesn’t fit in, and when Doc and Ainge realize that they go another route which would be to trade him/release him…

People are willing to take a chance on Marbury, who is borderline insane, but not Iverson, who can still play…

A Groucho Marx post is a good post.

And one I agree with entirely. He won’t accept the role he’s given. At all.

by Ben Buchanan on Aug 14, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

What does Sheed think?

He got a chance to see Iverson up close in Detroit. If he’s happy with the move AND AI agrees to come off the bench, why not?

I’m not sure there’s ever been player with AI’s talent and individual accomplishments who really will define his legacy and reputation by what he does at this point in his career. If he is willing to change his game and do what teams need him to do, he could make any contender the prohibitive favorite for the title and make a bunch of 2nd tier teams legitimate contenders. Or, he can go somewhere where he can play exactly the way he’s played his whole career and go down in NBA history as one of it’s most talented losers.

It's a moot point...

AI made it very clear last season that he wasn’t willing to come off the bench, and that’s when he was making a max salary. There’s no way he’s going to do it for the minimum.

I guarantee he'd rather have a large role in Miami than a bench role here.

No doubt in my mind. I mean, he came out and directly said it last year: he’d rather retire than come off the bench.

yes im sure.

but if miami signs tinsley instead he is left without a place to start….he will then need to decide if he does indeed want to retire, come of the bench or go to europe.

i personally think he will change his mind and end up on someones bench

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

Actually

The Grizzlies wouldn’t offer him a starting role. Mike Conley and OJ Mayo is basically guaranteed to be our starting back court. That is largely the reason why Iverson was not interested, and why Memphis quickly became less interested.

Straight Outta Vancouver - The Memphis Grizzlies DO Still Exist

by djturtleface on Aug 15, 2009 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions

If you play with fire too many times you get burned.

At least with Marbury, he came in knowing that he would be a role player on this team and said he had no problem with it. We signed him based on the assumption that he would stay true to his word. And he did. Unfortunately, Marbury either didnt gel as a backup and was just uncomfortable in our system.

Iverson has already balked at coming off the bench. He forced a team to make one of its perenial starters move to the bench to accomodate him, a player who hadnt even been with the team a half of a season. This team traded for him in a contract year and he still refused to suck up his ego for the good of the team. In Detriot all he would have had to do is come off the bench, he’d recieve the same amount of minutes as before, he just refused to give up the title of a starter. Now we expect him to come here and not only come off the bench, but not even play major minutes. Hes fighting for the left over minutes of Rondo and Ray Allen, which are a lot of minutes, but also factor in House and Marquis Daniels. Just would seem like a volitale situation.

I think it’s great that we rolled the dice with Marbury and it worked out locker room wise. However that doesnt mean we need to grab every problem player out there. This is why the house always wins in Vegas.

by greg683x on Aug 14, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

A.I.

Is the perfect guy we need off the bench!!! Too much attention is paid to Iverson, Eddie house will have a field day. add Scal to the mix rasheed to the mix baby to the mix lol, there is no way of stopping such line up. you couldn’t double off of anyone. I’ll problem will be defensively. A.I. and House will get abused by the opposing team’s taller backcourt. This will work though because its 2nd team minutes. I’M ALL FOR IT!!!

by Rtpas11 on Aug 14, 2009 6:26 PM EDT reply actions

wouldnt mind him BUT

i think its a bad fit. he has stated he wont come off the bench, complained about it last year and even IMO, faked an injury so he didnt have too.

it would cause alot of drama because you know he would push to start.

now if danny talks to him and says look we want you but you’re the bench point unless rondo gets injured and he say im ok with that then lets talk money…..

a second unit of iverson, house, daniels, baby, wallace, scal, walker, giddens could put up alot of points

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

by remembering9ergods on Aug 14, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

stop mentioning Giddens...lol

Last year the team failed because of no bench scorers. We had shooters but no one that could be a creator. So Paul had to play with the 2nd string, and so did Ray Allen. Allen Iverson coming here will be surreal..lol He’s a gifted scorer, and would cause havoc with the shooters the C’s already have to support him. A.I. trouble in Detroit and Denver was that, they had nothing but scorers and no shooters. He’s not coming here though. I heard MIAMI is going to sign him.

by Rtpas11 on Aug 14, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

well

i think giddens along with walker will both get more chance this season. i for one expect them both to do well.

as for miami and iverson, ive heard the same thing but ive also heard tehy are going hard after tinsley too

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

by remembering9ergods on Aug 14, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

AND

if rondo isnt hitting his shot……we know iverson can.

kobe wouldnt be able to rest like he did last year “guarding” the hesitant rondo. make him guard pierce or iverson which ever he chooses

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

by remembering9ergods on Aug 14, 2009 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

No Thanks

I’d rather have Captain Spaulding.

by amenhotep04 on Aug 14, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

I'd rather try out Lester Hudson

To be 2nd in the nation in scoring last year, and on a pretty good shooting %, this kid has talent. I think he’s worth a roll of the dice for training camp, and maybe the D-League during the season. He’s older than Rondo, so he’s not a young turk.

he could play more minutes cuz he can also play SG and help cut down on ray and pierces minutes.

If he would come here for the minimum!

You would be crazy not to do that. Maybe Ray would be willing to come off the bench and have AI start at shooting guard.

by liamail on Aug 14, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

Does this make anyone else think of Tiny Archibald?

I didn’t think Nate the Great was Celtic material, nor do I think of AI as a Celtic. But if he accepted a team-defined role, wow. Can’t even think of words.

by OldCeltFan on Aug 14, 2009 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

It was either Tiny

or Jo Jo White. They traded Jo Jo

by Little D on Aug 14, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Jo Jo was/is Celtic; Tiny was . .

a perpetual all star, scoring champ and 1-man show with less-than-stellar teams. He taught a rookie named Larry a few things.

by OldCeltFan on Aug 14, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

He's an option

But I think he will either play in Europe this year, or wait it out until February or March when teams who will need a scorer off their bench (good teams) will be knocking on his doorstep. It’s a lower risk move if your team only signs him for a small segment of the regular season (and playoffs, if that plateau is successfully reached.

I’d like to see him come aboard. He can only help with scoring off the bench. He is still a dynamic player, even though he’s not suited for a leadership or primary role anymore. His attitude is a question mark, but with Garnett, Perkins, and other strong personalities on the team whom I would could bank on to keep potential malcontents from gaining power, I think he’d happily accept his role. But who knows I am not AI.

I just can’t imagine AI signing for the vet min. It just defies belief. I see him in a 2nd tier playoff team for a portion of the MLE..

by BWC on Aug 14, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe the Wizards?

He grew up in the area. He’d look good next to Arenas?

by BWC on Aug 14, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

His ego is immense. Much bigger than what’s left of his game. No chance he signs for the vet min.

by Mencius on Aug 14, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

iverson has made it clear he wouldn’t come off the bench… so would he get the nod for the starting job, and then would rondo come off the bench? some how i have a hard time believing rondo would like that.

by shoothoop on Aug 14, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

If and this is a BBBBBIIIIIIIGGGGG if...

Iverson were to except a backup pg role, not play me first ball, not be disruptive, and accept the veterans minimun then I would definitely sign him because he is better by far than all of the available point guards out there.

But AI will NEVER do that so the answer is a big flat NO!

by Mike-Dub on Aug 14, 2009 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

It could work out...

It could work out, if Iverson was willing to come off-the-bench, if he was willing to play less minutes than he used to, and if we could turn around and trade House for a signed-and-traded Daniels. Iverson could get 25-30 minutes at the 1/2 spots…

Lotsa ifs, though, for a high-risk, medium reward signing….

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Aug 14, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Why would we have to trade House?

Iverson could get all the backup pg minutes and some at the 2, Eddie at the backup 2, Marquis at the backup 3, Baby at the 4, and Sheed at the 5… So why would we have to trade Eddie?

by Mike-Dub on Aug 14, 2009 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

Wizards or Lakers

If he was willing to take the minimum, he could probably start for either the fakers or wiz and be a part of a very good team.
AI, Kobe, Artest, Gasol, Bynum
or
AI, Gilbert, Caron, Jamison, Haywood

by Jon Niednagel on Aug 14, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

wizards have arenas to start at pg. the lakers run the triangle, iverson is much too ball dominant to succeed with them.

by shoothoop on Aug 15, 2009 4:07 AM EDT up reply actions

no way, no how

locker room poison. no thanks.

Of course I said the same about Marbury but at least he said the right things before joining the team. AI has made no such comments about being part of something bigger than himself.

If all he wants is to start....

Bring Ray off the bench. Ray’s a pro he’ll do it for another championship. AI plays the 1st 8 mins of each half and does his thing.

cry baby

oh hey big baby says he wants to play more over rasheed and kg so lets let him start too and get the swell in his ego down

AI is a team wrecker

He’ll say all the right things for about a week. Then he’ll do his best to wreck the team.

Worst possible move they could make.

by Brickowski on Aug 14, 2009 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

OMG! I agree with Brick?!?!

I voted “no,” looked at all the comments and was kinda swayed, and then … hit in the head by the reality Brickowski.
Yup, that’s basically A.I. There’s one qualifier, though; if somehow the combined magical karma of Rasheed (were they tight?), the Big Three and the promise of a ring, then sure. Oh, and reversing his apparently stated belief in retiring over subbing.
Just doesn’t seem to add up, though stranger things have happened.

by Big_Easy on Aug 14, 2009 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

it’s the silly season. ai wants a lot more dough than we have to offer, as well as more playing time. maybe groucho’s line would fit ai (modified)— i would not want to play for any team that would want me as a player.

by nazzbo on Aug 14, 2009 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

last year Detroit fans were excited becuase they had AI and Sheed in the starting 5, that’d be funny if we went into the year as our main bench contributors.

by jesse_stoneham on Aug 14, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

It really depends on AI

People are saying the remaining FAs are setting their sights a little lower has the days go by and they still don’t have a gig with a NBA team.

If AI’s willing to play his role and be humble, then who knows. But, that doesn’t seem likely….so I’ll say no.

I am shocked that right now the majority favor AI coming. Wow.

by Tai on Aug 15, 2009 12:41 AM EDT reply actions

preseason

sign him to a ten day contract or put him on the roster for preseason and then decided if we want to keep him or after the ten day contract sign him to another one then if he really seems commited to coming off the bench and doesnt pull a fake injury then sure sign him

the problem like eveyone is saying is that he has said he wont do it and he will not start over rondo or ray so his ass needs to be on the bench

u have ur starting 5 with rasheed now neone gets out of line like bbd or ai then i think those guys can all keep them in line kg has worn off on all those guys

and hey maybe with rasheed being there him and ai can talk about changing roles and rasheed can help him understand this is wut he needs to do to get a championship
but dont sign him more then a year

by jbb08040 on Aug 15, 2009 1:28 AM EDT reply actions

Bring him

I think it could work. With the Big 4 there and Doc’s style of coaching I think there is no room for cancers in this team (as it happened with Marbury). If he commits to 15min per game, then I think it’s a no brainer.

by greenwise on Aug 15, 2009 2:23 AM EDT reply actions

Yes

But AI would have to know his role, be a good soldier and do what he was told. How scary on paper would our roster look by adding him? Our 2nd unit could compete with most NBA starting units!

by Marco33 on Aug 15, 2009 6:30 AM EDT reply actions

I CAN SEE DOING IT, IF

he agrees to play for 18 minutes a game behind Rondo for minimum money or sign and trade money (for T.Allen or Scal). He comes in for 18 minutes per game and it is Iverson, House, Daniels, Davis, & Wallace off of the pine. That group could win 40 games as starters. Why not? Under those circumstances, if he decides to become a pain in the rear, you sit him or waive him or trade him. The problem is not whether you get him. The problem is how much do you commit. If you don’t over commit, then the team is fine..

by correcttitle on Aug 15, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

NO

Iverson is a “me first” player. He’s got a stinky attitude. let him go sulk somewhere else.

If he signs for what we have left to offer...

If Iverson will sign for the veteran’s minimum then YES absolutely take him. It would be fiscally irresponsible to turn down that talent for that cheap.
