Kedrick Brown Signs In Turkey

Old friend Kedrick Brown has signed a contract in Turkey.  Jessica Camerato reports:

Former Boston Celtic Kedrick Brown has signed with Bornova BLD of the Turkish TBL, Pro Basketball News reported. Brown was selected by the Celtics out with the 11th pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. He averaged just over three points in 101 games for the Celtics over three seasons. Brown went on to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers before posting nearly 18 points per game for the NBDL's Anaheim Arsenal last season.

Kedrick was one of those guys that I really, really was pulling for but he never lived up to my hopes.  In fact, he has a solid starting spot on my Celtics Busts of My Generation Starting Five.

PG: Marcus Banks
SG: Gerald Green
SF: Kedrick Brown
PF: Jerome Moiso
C: Eric Montross
6th Man: Ron Mercer

Am I forgetting anyone?

I wouldn't put Ron Mercer on the list...

He averaged 15.3 points and 17.0 points in two seasons, and went on to average 19.7 points later in his career.

I’d add Acie Earl or Joe Forte before Mercer.

You’re right, Mercer should not be on the list. He was a decent player, and for a while looked better than Bilups. Obviously in hindsight, he shouldn’t have been picked ahead of TMac, but who knew.

My All-Busts team for my Celtics fandom era:
starters
C: Montross
PF: Moiso
SF: Kedrick
SG: Forte
PG: Banks
bench:
Michael Smith
Acie Earl
Gerald Green

Ugh...

That’s a lot of busts. And of course, many of the picks that had talent were dealt before they truly had a chance to shine in green.

To be fair

Celts ratio of legit picks/busts is not bad, probably as good as any other team, and includes a lot of talent that dropped, like Brown, Fox, Williams, Pierce, Jefferson

1989 Michael Smith
1990 Dee Brown
1991 Rick Fox
1992 Jon Barry
1993 Acie Earl
1994 Eric Montross
1995 Eric Williams
1996 Antoine Walker
1997 Chauncey Billups
1997 Ron Mercer
1998 Paul Pierce
1999 None – -
2000 Jerome Moiso
2001 Joe Johnson
2001 Kedrick Brown
2001 Joseph Forte
2002 None – -
2003 Troy Bell
2003 Dahntay Jones
2004 Al Jefferson
2004 Delonte West
2004 Tony Allen
2005 Gerald Green
2006 Randy Foye
2007 Jeff Green
2008 JR Giddens

There's a big difference pre-Danny and post-Danny

From 1992 until 2002, the team drafted three players that 1) contributed, and 2) it held on to. Antoine, Pierce, and Eric Williams (and they didn’t hold onto Williams for that long). That’s not a great 11 year track record for a team that was in the lottery more often than not.

Totally Agree that Mercer should not be on that list

That was a bit too hard from Jeff.

I wish there was a way to sneak in Vitaly Potapenko, after we gave up our first round pick for him because we apparently thought we could not do better in that year’s upcoming draft.

putting him on the list is not a stretch...

if you compare his career to Chauncy’s career. Drafted close together the same year. How many good years did he have and how long did he play? I would put him on the list. He did perform well for a few years but then fell off the face of the earth!!

Against all common sense i cling to the notion that Kedrick brought into the NBA with someone other than teach the fundamentals wrong O’B would have been a useful player.

He never really showed any desire.

by feckless on Aug 22, 2009 9:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

meant to add that kedrick ran the floor hard and with incredible speed but they never passed him the ball—instead O’b had him stand in the corner and let Toine take those ridiculous 3’s.

I’ll always remember Kedrick for an awesome block he had on Tim Duncan, as well as….

…no, I guess that’s about it.

That 2001 draft was painful. I was excited when we selected Joe Johnson. Thought that Richard Jefferson OR Troy Murphy was coming next. If only we would have selected Tony Parker instead of Joe Forte. Lost opportunity with terrible picks and then we proceed to give away Joe Johnson to Phoenix when we probably could have given them Brown.

Billed as the next Jerome Kersey, Brown didn’t do much.

Rick Pitino, who else? This is probably the easiest.

All-Busts Team

This goes back a long time, but the biggest draft mistake in Celtics history, and Red Auerbach’s biggest personal drafting mistake, came in 1964. The Celtics had the last pick in the first round of the draft. They were looking for a big man to support Russell – two choices were available: Mel Counts, an obviously uncoordinated 7’ from Oregon, and Willis Reed. The Celtics picked Counts, and in the very next pick, the first pick of the second round, the Knicks drafted Reed. Counts averaged about 5 or 6 points per game his rookie year and played just two seasons for the Celtics. Reed average almsot 20 per game, with 15 rebounds, his rookie year, and went onto a Hall of Fame career in New York. The differences in talent between Reed and Counts were obvious at the time, and I have never heard an even remotely plausible explanation. At the time, there was speculation that Counts was selected because he was white, but Auerbach was completely color blind when it came to talent, and I, for one, do not believe this for a second. However, the difference between the two players gave rise to the racism interpretation. Whatever the reason, it stands out as the greatest single drafting mistake in Celtics history.

Good point...

It did not happen often….but this would have to rate as Red`s biggest draft day miscalculation.

history

I find it interesting that the responses to the subject of so-called all-time “busts” does not reach back to the Celtics glory era, beginning with the 1956-57 season, extending through the 68-69 season. This might also be referred to as the “Russell era.” Granted that the likes of Michael Smith and Eric Montross were pretty bad choices, but in the Willis Reed case, we passed up a top 50 in history player. I often rued this choice, but what is interesting is whether it cost the Celtics any championships. Most certainly, if the Celtics had picked Reed in 1964, they would have one the 1966-67 NBA championship, the only time they lost when Russell was healthy, to Wilt and Philadelphia. Russell retired in 1969, and the Celtics had the 9th pick in the league that year, selecting Jo Jo White. If Reed had been on that 68-69 team, the Celtics would not have finished 4th in the East and would have had a much worse draft pick, and probably not gotten Jo Jo. Similarly, the next year, 1970, the Celtics got the 3rd pick and selected Dave Cowens. Again, this would not have happened with Willis Reed on the roster. Would the Celtics simply have declined more slowly, lost out on Cowens and White, and not won two championships in the 70s had Red picked Willis Reed in 1964? (Incidentally, Red also passed on Paul Silas in 1964, but managed to retrieve him in time to contribute to the Cowens-led championships). The beauty of this type of speculation is that we will never really know. Again, I am surprised so many Celticsblog participants aren’t able to reach very far back into Celtics history to include episodes like the Willis Reed and other “missteps” as part of the discussion.

by dcrane on Aug 23, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We can only speculate...

Not that it really matters, but Cowens was the 4th pick in the `70 draft {Lanier, Rudy T., Maravich}. With Reed in his prime as a Celtic, no way could Red draft Big Red!

With Sam making it known he would retire in `69, Red would`ve been looking for a shooting guard. White grew into that role perfectly, but can`t see him available if Boston had to pick at about 14th.

One thing we do know : The Knicks would still probably be without any titles had Red selected Reed.

Red did mention that the `62 draft was a tough choice for him {Havlicek or Chet Walker}, but was quiet about `64.

by Title 18 on Aug 23, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good points

You are right about Cowens being picked 4th – must have confused with McHale, a 3rd pick. Red was right that the decision between Havlicek and Chet Walker was a difficult one, and had Red picked Walker, there would not have been a lot of “told you sos.” Whereas Walker was a great player, Counts was a bust. Situation also brought to mind Portland’s decision to pick Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan because they already had Clyde Drexler. No one knew that Bowie would be so injury plagued or that Jordan would be the best ever – not in the Counts-Reed category but a decision that Portland fans undoubtedly complained about for years. To close out the subject, would be interested in any insights as to why Red chose Counts over Reed and whether he or anyone else associated with the Celtics ever expressed regret over the decision. My sense is that the mistake was buried and no one focused on it because the Celtics kept winning titles regardless

Reasons why Red went with Counts

Here is my guess as to why Red went with Counts over Reed :

1} Reed went to a school {Grambling St.} that really had no basketball tradition, and likely played a very weak schedule. To this day, I can`t name another prominent NBA player who went there. It has a rich football tradition, not basketball.

2} Counts, at 7`0", was taller than Reed.

3} Counts played in a major conference {Pac-8}, with tough opponents. Twice a year against UCLA.

4} Counts was the center of the 1964 gold medal winning US Olympic team.

Michael Smith who chose 11 because it looked good on him.

Jiri Welsch...

…came in a trade from Dallas and went in a trade to Cleveland for a #1 pick.

by Little D on Aug 23, 2009 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

jiri welsch for a cleveland #1 should definitely go down as one of the best trades DA has ever made for two reasons….

it was a 2007 #1, very deep draft class, cleveland later tried trading welsch and the best they could get was a 2nd rounder…

the celtics traded clevelands #1 in 2007 to the phoenix suns for the draft rights to rajon rondo.

by MS12 on Aug 23, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

to avoid confusion i meant clevelands 2007 #1 pick… the trade itself obviously happened in 2006.

Montross

One thing to keep in mind about Montross – we turned him and a first round pick into two more first round picks. Net, we sent Montross and Samaki Walker to the Mavs and got Antoine Walker and Ron Mercer in return. Even though I’m not a huge ‘Toine fan, doesn’t this keep him from being a total bust?

Montross’ numbers during his two years with the Cs, while pedestrian, were better than Mark Blount’s over his first two – and Montross wasn’t a bad influence.

You still have to say Montross was a bigger bust because of his draft position, but… is it reaching too far back to choose Rick Robey? Chosen 3rd overall(!) He was a serviceable backup center for Boston from 1978-1983. Although then again, dammit, we turned him and two second round picks into Dennis Johnson and Greg Kite.

This stuff is complicated!

by Sophomore on Aug 23, 2009 12:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Two more humbly submitted for your consideration

Acie Earl – chosen 19th overall the year before Montross – so terrible that the Cs tried picking a center again the following year. A center who shot 40% for his career!

Michael Smith 13th overall, 1989. Pew. Has to be worse even than Moiso. Waived. Nobody would even give us a second-rounder for him.

Michael Smith

He was horrible. I remember watching him in garbage time in a game in 1990 or 1991, and his man went right around him on the baseline, and Smith basically just turned around with a disgusted look on his face and watched the guy make a layup. It might have been in 1990 in the playoffs against the Knicks.

I do remember that he was a good shooter though, and I heard that during HORSE games his specialty was banking it in off the shot clock, so when I was in high school I always tried to do that.

by dooyork on Aug 23, 2009 1:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not much has changed...

Today, Smith is a “horrible” broadcaster on LA Clipper games.

by Title 18 on Aug 23, 2009 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Smith was easy to hate in particular because the C’s had a high draft pick the year Bird had bone spurs and barely played, and they passed on Tim Hardaway and Shawn Kemp.

Yep and Red said...

… at his press conference that he “played a lot like Larry”

Mercer is at the very top of my list. Its about the differential between talent and outcome. There are players on the list who were worse and certainly one slick haired coach but mercer, arghh. Great shot. Great athleticism and no heart no dagger instinct. He would constantly shoot floating off balance jumpers when it seemed he could easily spend just a bit more effort to get set. That really drove me nuts. He is the anti ray allen. The anti reggie miller. Hated that guy without qualification.

by chicagogreen on Aug 23, 2009 3:26 AM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

i agree

that mercer definitely shouldnt be on the list… he was a phenom with the celtics… he was a bust on other teams.

by MS12 on Aug 23, 2009 3:31 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i admit to overexaggerating

but he was pretty solid in his two years with the team… 15.3 ppg his rookie season and 17 his 2nd year

Also, glad for kendrick, depression especially in relation to athleticism is a serious thing. Hope he plays well, gets some satisfaction makes a little money and sees the world

Secondly this would be a great offseason excercise for jeff to use his connections with other team blogs to get their busts lists. Oh tractor, its not your fault you were picked over pierce. But how do those fans feel about it. Hawks and clippers fans must have stories to tell

And again damn pitino. Billups, johnson and pierce could easily have made some real noise.

And what about the anti busts, for us and others, willis reed somebody mentioned, for us, rondo, jefferson, perk, etc.

by chicagogreen on Aug 23, 2009 3:36 AM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Ben Pepper

Ben Pepper I think he is still signed with the Celtics. LOL j/k Pitino picked him in the second round a 7’3 Australian Center that never even played

Semir, the Turkish wonder!. Haven’t heard anything about him in a while, but the last was he , on good days, was average in the EuroLeague. (Course, he WAS a 2nd round pick).

It's hard

to call anyone drafted after say 15 a bust because of the successful rate of those players in the league. So I would take Forte off the bust list since he wasn’t drafted terribly high and I would definately have Ron Mercer in there since he was drafted so high.

So I would have

PG Banks
SG Mercer
SF Michael Smith
PF Jerome Moiso
C Eric Montross
6th man Kedrick Brown

I think Mercer was the 3rd highest draft pick in the last 20 years so I have to put him in there. You can’t screw up when you draft that high.

Rounding out your bench:

Joe Forte
Sam Vincent
Micheal Smith
Acie Earl
Rick Fox

We picked up some real losers in FA in the post Reggie Lewis era and Rick Pitinoto era.
