Speculation: Ray Allen To Stay In Boston Past This Season?
As you all know, Ray Allen's deal expires after this coming season. However, Peter May reports on speculation that he'll be back in Boston beyond this year:
File this under the "Hot Rumor’’ category. Ray Allen’s contract is up at the end of the season and Celtics president Danny Ainge reports that no serious talks have taken place regarding an extension. But there is considerable chatter in Wellesley, where Allen lives, that his teenage daughter may move in with him. Tierra Allen has lived with her mother in South Carolina and plays volleyball and basketball in high school. She would be a junior at Wellesley High (and why would she come if dad wasn’t planning on playing beyond this year? Just an observation). Needless to say, the Wellesley basketball community is watching all this with great interest. With volleyball starting this week, one would think something has to break pretty soon.
No idea if this has any validity, but if it does, consider me on board. I'd love to see Ray sign a two year extension, maybe with a third year team option.

I want to see Ray win another championship with Boston and retire as a Celtic.
ray had said i believe after the championship that he would resign cheap…lets hope this is him keeping his word. i dont know what he considers cheap though. could be interesting.

I would be shocked if Ray Allen leaves Boston after this year.
I doubt Sheed would have signed with Boston if there was any real chance that Allen or Pierce would leave anytime soon.
Ray 'til retirement
Resign him please….later he will be amazing off the bench if he agrees…
Everybody gets old, but....
Ray is so fastidious about keeping in shape – physically and mentally. Reggie Miller isn’t out of the league because he lost his shot. He couldn’t get open to shoot anymore. Professional grade quickness gets lost. Ray may not lose measurable strength or leap in his legs but the brain ages and the messaging from brain to the body “loses a step”. Ray strikes me as having the mental focus of a John Stockton so I’m a believer that there’s a few more good years in Ray.
I'd like to have Ray resigned for another 2 years soon
I believe Danny and him have been playing golf together lately…maybe they talked about it? :)
Body Language
If you beleive in “body language”,i ve noticed right from the start Ray developed a good chemistry with wyc and Danny. From the pics and interviews over the 2seasons,always look as if the 3l had a friendship beyond basketball.(imo)
Hope This Is All True
If it’s true that Ray’s daughter is coming here as a junior in high school, it is pretty sure that Ray is staying. Otherwise the family would not make this move. It doesn’t matter when the paperwork is done, but, again if true, I’m sure the contract details have been pretty much worked out. Hope so. I really want Ray to retire as a Celtic.

FWIW Bob Ryan thinks he's gone
On Sports Sunday he said he believes that Celts want to play in 2010 FA class. I think the Cs have to pony up enough for Rondo and that RA gets an offer. OTOH, maybe PP opts out and extends at a lesser amount and then the Cs really can play in free agency regardless of Rondo’s contract. Or the Cs go after Wade and Rondo gets jettisoned and Ray resigns as a reduced rate or….
At this point, I’m really wondering if the boys show up the 1st week or 2nd week of September. It would be nice to know whether KG is really going to be ready for the season opener.
I just don't see Pierce leaving big money on the table.
If the salary cap is $54M next year, as people are speculating, then, with Pierce’s current deal, the Celtics are right at next summer’s cap. A max free agent from Wade/LeBron’s class would cost $17M or so. So to sign one of those guys, Pierce would have to give up $17M in salary and take just $4M. This seems incredibly unlikely to me.
Maybe Pierce would consider opting out and taking $8M less or so, but that’s only $2M more than the MLE. Would there be a great player available for $8M who wouldn’t be available for the MLE? Maybe; I haven’t studied the list of lesser free agents for next summer.
But it seems absurd to think that Pierce would leave $17M on the table. That he would essentially pay Wade $17M to play in Boston. Sure he wants a winner, but that’s ridiculous. To essentially pay 4/5 of his salary to Wade?
Celtics will not be major players in the free agent market next year.
you can't look at Pierce's salary for 1-year
Let’s say Pierce is slated to make $21 million in 2010-2011. Since he’d be looking for a contract extension in the first place, and his value then would be $8million / year for 3 years (as an example), the grand total of the 4 remaining years would be $45 million. What he might do is have that averaged out over the 4 years, so approx $11 per year for the next 4 years. That would inherently drop his 2010-2011 salary down from 21 to 11, and hence save $10 mil for the Celtics in just that year.
Honestly I think the Celtics are more looking at trading Ray Allen+ other value in a S&T for a Wade, etc. If Miami knows they can’t get Wade to resign at the end of the season, they will look to move forward asap, and the Celtics could help. To me, that’s much more likely a scenario than anything happening off-season.

Agreed
I can imagine him giving up $8M-$10M in salary next season in exchange for a longer contract that pays the same amount. But I can’t see him giving up enough to get the Celtics in position to sign a Wade outright. If he gives up $17M in 2010-2011 salary, there’s no practical way he could make up that money over the rest of the contract (only if the Celtics wanted to sign him to like a 9 year contract).
I think resigning Ray forces too much other sacrifice
I love Ray and his game, and thought the was the Celtic regular season MVP this last year, but I worry a bit about his game going forward.
He may be fanatic about being in shape, but he can’t stop his continual reduction in lateral quickness, etc. Every year he’s getting noticably slower on D, and less likely to be able to penetrate at all. For proof, youtube clips of him when he was in Seattle… you’ll see a definite difference. If all we need is a spot up 3-pointer there are plenty capable in this league who would be MUCH cheaper (i.e. Eddie house, etc).
Ultimately it comes down to this: If the Celtics resign Ray Allen, what are they NOT capable of doing instead. It may have an impact on Rondo’s signing, incoming free agents, etc. In the end the Celtics are rather tight going into next off-season as-is… if they resign Ray then it detracts from a great deal, unfortunately.
As the Celtics look to mix in more quality youth (or players in their prime) with the aging all stars, one of the best places to look is at the SG spot. There needs to be some sort of phasing, and unfortunately I think it should start with Ray Allen. :-/
Not sure
Ray’s Salary could afford a great young FA…..

Im startin to get a little nervous..
I think we still need to get a back up pg for sure. A 3 or SF for Pierces back up. And then maybe another center. We have been talking about signing marquis daniels but we haven’t done anything yet. I’m startin to feel like that deal isn’t going to happen. We need to get the final pieces of the puzzle!
