What can we expect from Shelden Williams this year?
Promoting this FanPost to the front page. - Jeff
I think Shelden Williams will get some minutes this year even with Big Baby signed, Doc will attempt to keep the minutes of the starting front line down this year and since he will be replacing the role of Powe on the team.
My question is what can we expect from Williams this year and what kind of game will he bring to the court?
I have only seen him play a bit, but from what I have seen I must say he can defend and rebound against power forwards and some centers in the NBA better than Big Baby or Powe can since he is a couple inches taller then both of them and and a bit stronger then Powe.
Offensively I think he will be limited, but again we don't need him to play a scoring role but instead need him to come into a game to defend, rebound, bang and bruise the front line of opposing teams.
Anyone else have any thoughts on what type of player Williams will be for us and what we can expect from him this year offensively and defensively?
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

I believe HE ...
would expect us to spell his first name correctly first. LOL.
It’s Shelden, not Sheldon.
But....
Once he proves himself then he will be called Shelden haha.
In all honesty I expect him to be a bust like Miki Moore, it is just a hunch though because I have yet to see much from the guy throughout his NBA career.
That said ...
I like the idea of having a fourth big like Shelden Williams if for no other reason to body slam LeBron or Kobe when they try to drive the lane. And I like the idea of Williams teaming with Wallace of the bench cuz it would allow Wallace to roam the perimeter more while Williams clogged the middle. Just a thought.
Remember, C33, we’re not expecting him to start like the Hawks did. Just sold rebounding and defense off the bench. That, I think he can handle.
Shelden
I think that Williams may end up being this generation’s Paul Silas. If you look at his stats from last year, if he played a full 3200 minutes, he would have had over 100 steals, over 100 blocks, over 800 rebounds, over 400 trips to the line and would have averaged 15 PPG. That ain’t chopped liver. He’s a perfect compliment to Wallace and I think he’s more important to our future than Davis. Davis does have potential, but in the playoffs (his claim to fame) he had a so-so series against Orlando with 5 bad games and 2 good games and his play against Chicago may say more about Tyrus Thomas than it does about him.
second unit
Rasheed
Williams
Baby
Daniels
House
thats a huge line up in the paint house is a liability on d but maybe use that line up with and house in together and rondo culd just drive to the basket play after play dish the ball or take the open lay up becasue the floor wuld be spread so much
there are so many scary lineups that we can use that defenses will nevr be able to stop its gonna be this season, does any other team have shooters at every single position on the floor like us
Yikes, so who is your SF there?
I think that lineup would have some trouble in the dept, and would rather not see Baby and Williams together on the floor.
Cooz, a bit of hyperbole comparing Willams to the great Paul Silas. What he did part-time may not translate to a starting role to say the least. Shelden is not there.
Who Knows?
I have no idea. I’ll wait to see him in the preseason before forming a judgment.
his role...
is he gives the team 6 extra fouls besides parading a beautiful wife in the sidelines…candace parker is a good backup for pierce… lol
seriously, i think he can provide quality minutes as a 3rd string big, would be really good role playing rebounder and harrasser of the opposing big men. any points we get from him will be bonus.
you forgot to add the part
where leon’s hands turn into concete blocks. oh, and the part where he goes from looking highly focused to looking mildly to deeply lost at all times.
but other than that, pretty much the same.
At least he can dunk!
Don’t count Shelden out. He can finish around the basket with authority. Something we missed when Powe went down. BBD struggled to get the ball over the rim at times.
From Durham, NC
I work at Duke but went to school at UNC. When Carolina plays Duke, 100% i want UNC to win.
So glad Shelden is a Celtic now, he was great at Duke; a monster in the paint. It is great he is a celtic!!! I don’t know what his health-injury status. Can anyone comment?
So that wild man Rasheed and his technicals; i could never understand that weakness as a pro. A he was a great great Tar Heel. I like him on the Celtics !! And i have 100% confidence that he too will be a great Celtic, and i predict he will mirror the contribution Walton made in the front court and even cut down on his technicals..
Minutes?
I don’t see how anyone thinks he’s going to get regular minutes. Even if Doc does keep KG, Wallace, and Perk’s minutes down to the extreme (say 28 mpg, which isn’t going to happen anyway, but I’ll throw out there for the sake of argument), that leaves a whopping 12 mpg at the 4/5 position. Unless Sheldon outplays Big Baby, why doesn’t Big Baby get all 12 of those minutes?
I think Baby is going to have a tough time finding regular minutes, let alone getting into talking about Sheldon getting any.
I still like having him around in case of short injuries and foul trouble, but I think we’re kidding ourselves if we think he’s going to get regular minutes, even in the regular season.
With two old men and Perk's shoulder ahead of him, the chances are, unfortunately, that he gets time.
And the C’s don’t have any particular incentive that I can see to showcase Baby next year either. He gets a chance, and part of his value is in pushing Baby to play more D.
I think...
he fits this team perfectly. This pick-up has gone under the radar of almost every basketball writer. I agree with Green is Good: he is strong under the basket, a tough defender, and a guy with a high basketball I.Q. He’s not afraid to take an open shot. He’s a team guy. I can’t wait to see a guy with his size and with his toughness and with his I.Q. on a team that can create space for him.
Frontcourt insurance policy.
Pure and simple. Nice one, too.
Towel waving?
I expect that he will do a great job waving towels from the bench.
I also see him getting minutes when the bench is having rebounding problems.
I Expect Shelden To Have Playing Time
A collegiate star player primarily with great defense, I expect him to be on the floor more now that Williams is on a primarily defensive team. With veteran frontlines of KG & Sheed, Shelden needs to give them a breather that the C’s defense won’t go down. Shelden fought playing time in Atlanta, Sacramento and Minnesota with young big men and hasn’t been on the floor much with his ex-teams. Yeah, the C’s are loaded also with “bigs” along with Baby & Perk, but as long as Shelden gets playing I am sure he’ll found his niche. Moreover, KG has been a good tutor to Baby, Perk & Powe and I don’t see anything wrong why Shelden can’t also becoming a force in Green – - as long as Doc gives him playing time. Please, don’t make Shelden or don’t be ala Patrick O’Bryant or Mikki Moore.
Think 'Perk Lite'
With the exception of blow-outs, I don’t expect him to get much playing time. I think his game will mirror Perk’s: Strong defense, rebounds, blocks, and not much offense.
I don’t have high expectations for him simply because of the depth chart, but a great pick-up. Great guy to have waiting in the wings.

Rebounds...
… if Baby doesn’t get them, Shelden will get his chance. This will be the message sent to Glen Davis from the first day of training camp (if he hasn’t been given the message already).
I loved the progress with Baby’s offensive game last year and so didn’t Baby. That may be the problem that Danny, Doc, and the staff have with him. Glen needs competition and with no Powe around it becomes Shelden’s opportunity.
Shelden is not very smooth at the offensive end but he can finish with both hands and if he gets to play while the floor is spread, he will be more effective down low, anyone would be.
This is a low risk, high reward situation. If Shelden is a bust, we rely on Baby. If Shelden can transform into an NBA rotation 7th or 8th man, we can explore trading baby or we have another chip in Williams.
Great comment
I agree with you that baby needs some competition for that growing ego of his (especially since he’s been getting so good offensively, hitting game winning jumpers and what not).. Hopefully this will humble him down a bit and get him more focused on defensive and rebounding, which is a big hole in his game. He isn’t long enough to sky over people for boards which means he needs to box out more, which can be very tiring especially for a primarily offensive player.. Hopefully Williams will be that extra motivation for baby to work harder on the boards.. If not then I believe Shelden will be getting more minutes than people expect.. And hey, we could always trade baby if he can’t compete as a defensive banger (which is what we need most out of a back up of a back up pf) we could get a lot of value out of him and say Tony and scal’s expiring contracts..

Maybe
But Baby’s role is going to be a bit different this year. Unlike last year when he had to play with Scal and essentially be the big man, he should almost always be on the court with Perk, KG, or Wallace, and maybe (at times) even two of them. So while I’d like to see him rebound more, I’m not sure it’s going to be the glaring need it was last year when he had to play small all the time.
ON A PERMINUTE BASIS
he was productive last year. He will get maybe 10 minutes per game, and if he rebounds and clogs up the lane on defense, he will be a find. He’s tough, and he is still young. I see him doing OK. For minimum salary, he is a bargain. I see him playing 3rd string C/PF.
Restart
This guy is a legit NBA journeyman IMO. He needs to play a little more to establish his role and I think he will get a chance as a Celtic. He is a classic, unselfish, no nonsense, under the basket workhorse. (we already had one in Perk) No team can have too many of them. He is a team first guy who is certainly tall and strong enough to play in the paint. I think he will learn our system quickly and fit right in.
I would love to see him get a lot of garbage minutes alongside Big Baby in the early part of the season. If this happens, imagine how fresh KG,Perk and Sheed will be for the bigger games?

Minutes
I still don’t see where people are getting his minutes from. Yes, Sheed and KG are old, but unless they actually go down for a few games, how is Williams going to get minutes? Even if Doc does something extreme and only plays KG and Sheed 25 mpg each, that still only leaves 46 mpg at the 4/5 for anyone else. Assuming Perk takes at least 28 of those minutes (though he’ll likely play more: he’s only now just hitting his mid 20s), that leaves 18 mpg at best. And assuming Baby is the better player, why wouldn’t Baby get all 18?
He’s a nice insurance policy that will be good if KG or Sheed goes down for a bit. But if that doesn’t happen, I don’t see him getting off the bench very often. I expect him to get a ton of DNP-CD and only really to play in blow outs.
Lot of dreaming going on here
It would be great to have Williams become a vital Celtic. But he was on two teams that were badly in need of talent of any sort and he couldn’t get in the game. I’m all for these rolls of the dice. I thought the Pat OBryant pick up was a smart move and maybe this will be too. But, that is all Shelden Williams is…..a roll of the dice. Some of these posts make him sound like a guy everybody must have wanted and we got him.
I thought O'Bryant was a worthless gamble.
I knew he would not do it because he did not have the toughness. Williams is different. He’s not great but for 10 minutes, he will bang around and get some rebounds. You’ll see.

Shelden minutes
I think with KG back in the line up along with Perk and Rondo who keep improving, we should have about ten blowouts. I think we should rest KG during these blowouts and not keep him in there until 2:30 minutes left or even 2:00. We should let the subs play the last 7 or 8 minutes of the 4th .If were up by 20 early in the 3rd let the bench have 5 or 6 minutes of the 3rd and more in the 4th instead of letting the starters rest out there and let the 20+point lead dwindle to 13 or soto close out 3rd. Also every 10th game i would rest KG, let Big Baby start, he did fine last yr and then let Shelden have 16 minutes or so those games. KG would be on the bench resting approx 8 games and only used in those games off the becnh if really needed. This would keep him fresh for the stretch .
while strengthening our bench play and confidence of playing together.
Sheldens minutes could look more like this:
8 games KG rests 16 minutes = 108
10 blowouts use him 16 minutes = 160
In case of injuries to big men (shoulder and ankle sprains) 5 games – 18 min = 90
whatever he can earn per game ala Mikki Moore say 50 games(few DNP) 6 min ea game for 300 minutes.
108 + 160 +
oops hit the wrong key
108 + 160 + 90 +300 = 608 608 into 73 games = 8.5 mpg
see he will probably get some burn, just not a steady 8.5 per game
