Wyc: C's "Hands Down" The East Favorites
This is one reason you've just got to love Wyc Grousbeck. He's a fan first. Ken Berger caught up with him recently and brings us the following quotes.
"I think we should be the favorites in the conference, hands down," Grousbeck said after emerging from a 3 1-2 hour bargaining session between the NBA owners and the players' union. "And we’re going to start proving that Oct. 27."
He also goes on to talk about how he helped recruit Sheed to Boston and when he's asked about Sheed's issues with the refs, he jokes about his own sideline behavior.
"I actually told David (Stern) that I was going to modify my baseline ref assistance program a little bit to make up for the fact that we’ve got Rasheed. So I’m going to be doing a little less helping of the refs from the baseline. Just trying to even things out."
Finally we have one more update on the Baby front - even if it is nothing new, hearing it come from the owner is slightly different.
As for restricted free agent Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Grousbeck said the Celtics have had "a lot of conversations with him" and added, "We expect to see him in green. But things play out and you never know."

Hands down favourites? I don`t like the sound of that. Hopefully this doesn`t mean we are done making deals, signing players…
We need Davis back, finalize Daniels deal, bring in some more depth (veteran PG, Bowen…)…if we do that then we can start talking about being the favourites but certainly not now…
Grosbeck is a good fan
Mark Cuban is a little off the wall but Grosbeck has it about right.
I wonder how many of the bloggers here are too young to remember what trolls the Gastons were.

Please, I'm Still Trying To Forget
I think it took the new owners a few years to figure out the type of owners they wanted to be. There was no question that they were fans, but they seemed undecided between taking the Mark Cuban route or Red Auerbach route. I think they went toward Red’s side. Their definitive move was to name Danny Ainge as GM and to let him make the basketball decisions while the owners played a supportive role. From that moment on they turned the entire Organization into a model of success. I congratulate them, thank them and appreciate what they have done.

Topical pre-season optimism from an owner. If you ask the owner of the Clippers now, he would say something along the same line, such as the Clippers will be a hands down favorite in the West ….. to get in the playoffs.
Signing Sheed is a great off season success, but I hope DA don’t stop there. We still need help at PG.
So what?
We were the favorites for the last two seasons.
Not to nitpick
but we were certainly not the favorites two years ago. At that time, the celts were an unknown and as I recall, were expected to fall about third or fourth on average.
Wyc is becoming dangerously close...
…to resembling a “Mark Cuban wannabe”.
Memo to Wyc :
You might be wise to tone down the rhetoric.
Celtic fans are in love with the team…not you.
Just open up your wallet…not your mouth.
I would agree they are "hands down" favorites, but
that would only be if they re-sign Davis and Daniels and get a decent backup PG. I’d include Marbury in the definition of a “decent” PG.
I will never take Wyc (and the other owners) for granted
This guy is a true fan. He loves watching games. He hires good people and basically tells them “go do your job, and I let me know if you need anything”. He’s only involved in negotiations to close the deal. Deals that Danny initiates and probably needs help closing. But he never goes over Danny and initiates them.
He’s willing to spend to win. Which puts the Celtics in Luxury tax zone. But the fans have responded by selling out every game, the investment pays for itself and he knows that.
He’s never been, “I’m the owner and I can do anything I want with this team.” He’s just a fan who loves to see the Cetlics win.
I love Wyc as an owner.
He spent the money and he’s a knowledgeable fan as well but, I love his confidence the most.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
Since Wyc has taken over
They have brought a great basketball product to the Celtics fan base for all
of us to stand up and cheer for.
Wyc, I love your confidence in your team and I’m with ya.
Wyc Grousbeck is as dedicated as Theo, but as much fun as Tommy to listen to...
He definitely has helped foster an attitude of confidence about winning
