Rashard Lewis Suspended for PEDs

You knew it was just a matter of time before performance enhancing drugs became an issue in basketball.  Now we have our first suspension (that I can think of).  The Orlando Sentinel reports:

Orlando Magic All-Star forward Rashard Lewis tested positive for a testosterone-producing substance, dehydroepiandrosterone, which is commonly known as DHEA, and will be suspended without pay 10 games at the beginning of the season.

Lewis, who will turn 30 on Saturday, said he took an over-the-counter supplement near the end of last season which he did not know contained the banned substance. He told the Sentinel the substance was in powder form and he mixed it into smoothies. He got it at a nutritional store, but did not specify the name of the store.

Follow along at Third Quarter Collapse for updates.

I wonder...

…how this impacted his performance during the regular season and especially the playoffs. Grrr!

by BleedinGreen417 on Aug 6, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

C's were robbed!

Would’ve been the Magic if that cheater wasn’t playing….. KG back for Cavs and leads a miracle run to the finals…. C’s clownstomp the Lakers, per usual. LAME!

by Big Ticket on Aug 6, 2009 8:14 PM EDT reply actions

Easy guys...

Per Wikipedia: “DHEA supplements are sometimes used as muscle-building or performance-enhancing drugs by athletes. However, a randomized placebo-controlled trial found that DHEA supplementation had no (statistically significant) effect on lean body mass, strength, or testosterone levels.”

In other words, it didn’t matter. We lost that series because the Magic, as a team, beat us. We’ll get em this year.

by Rocci1212 on Aug 6, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry, Rocci, but I'm not buying it.

Only this substance could explain the amazing way Lewis, during the playoffs, was able to take both Scalabrine and Davis off the dribble with ease.

by no kidding on Aug 6, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope that was sarcasm.

The guy’s averaged over 17 points a game for the last 6 years. It’s not like he all of a sudden turned into a scoring machine…he’s been doing this for a while.

And besides, the drug does nothing.

by Rocci1212 on Aug 6, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

What? Sarcasm?

From a guy with a confidence-inspiring username like “no kidding”?

(sigh) Cynicism is sad, sad thing. ;)

DHEA is an over the counter drug. It’s effects are also widely disputed, and probably don’t really do that much. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had had no idea, like it was just in some GNC powder of something. Athletes are always trying that stuff. Kind of sucks if that is the case.

by stevenfuzz on Aug 6, 2009 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

Agree

DHEA is a very minor drug whose effects are disputed and marginal, if any. Especially for the sport of basketball. I think the suspension was a little harsh considering what was found in his system. I would argue that even creatine or nitrex (also over the counter sports supplements) have a much greater positive effect on athletic performance. Those two drugs don’t even make the list of NBA banned substances: http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=NBA/NBPA_Anti-Drug_Program_Prohibited_Substances

I’m not condoning Rashard’s actions but DHEA is so mild, I don’t think it should be on the list.

by BostonisaBrotherhood on Aug 7, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

...

i’m sure rashard knew what was in what he was taking, or he should have atleast gone to the team trainers first. this probably didn’t affect the outcome of last year’s playoffs, but it gives the homers another excuse. :)

I think they should test superman

As i watched the All star weekend events , i kept thinking to myself that they need to test Dwight Howard for Roids. His arms have way too much bulk and definition.

I wonder what Big al’s game would be like if he took roids and had that aggressive rebounding and getting into position strength and endurance for all those times being able toget under the basket tirelessly even after 2 to 3 guys rotate and work on you.

by perk on Aug 6, 2009 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Well, they do.

Per the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Agreement, players are randomly tested without notice four times each season by a third-party entity. The NBA or NBPA can also request a player be tested upon suspicion.

by Rocci1212 on Aug 6, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

He did get tested during the Olympics. So did Lebron, Kobe, Bosh, and everyone else that participated.

by shoothoop on Aug 6, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

And let's be careful

Before we get frustrated at playoff results and cast stones at other players. Haven’t we learned from Manny and Papi?

by Fan from VT on Aug 6, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

all these guys on PEDs makes me think that if I had taken steroids years ago i could’ve been on the celtics, instead of being on celtcsblog.

by cons on Aug 6, 2009 10:17 PM EDT reply actions

who wuld have thought a little string bean like lewis would be taking steroids, but the difference between this n baseball is he prob had done it by mistake where basebal guys knew exactly wut they were doing. please lewis taking steriods n gaining a little muscle was not the difference between us winning n losing, and any celtic player wuld say the same thing. this drug is sold over the counter i work out almost every day n i take creatine which is a very similar substance to this n it hardley effects anything. n celtics fans that claim this is the difference between winnin n losing jus shut up casue ur makin urself look stupid

by celtics94 on Aug 6, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

him being stighley stronger really prob wuldnt help him anyway it might jus hurt him jumper shot if anything, but a guy like howard please he took sumthing

by celtics94 on Aug 6, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

being slightly stronger would hurt a guy playing PF out of position?

um okay

by latin on Aug 7, 2009 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

the only thing that bothers me about this is now the nba is gonna take all this heat for one guy gettin caught when the whole freaking nfl, and mlb do it

BREAKING NEWS!

scal will take his multivitamins today! BRIAN SCALABRINE 2010 MVP! 2010 FINALS MVP! 2010 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR! woooooooooooooot! =P

by jewik on Aug 6, 2009 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

If Lewis really took that drug to improve performance

He should return it for a refund and sue the manufacturer for false advertising. His perform in the playoffs was not enhanced at all. Didn’t he score just 6 points in a game vs the Lakers and was virtually invisible in the Finals.

Maybe making one invisible is the side effect of that powder.

by 33-32-00 on Aug 7, 2009 12:04 AM EDT reply actions

virtually invisible in the finals?
um no…. he was the magics best player in the finals, besides that 1 game you speak of (where the entire lakers gameplan revolved around him after he destroyed them in previous games)

oh, by the way, paul pierce had a game where he scored 6 pts last season in the finals and ultimately won finals MVP…so??? now what?

I would recommend

I would recommend checking http://socialmediasports.com/category/nba/ out for finding out whether or not they are real.

Though indeed, Twitter seems rather down lately.

Let's hope not

Let’s hope this is not more than it is. So far, the NBA has been able to stay out of the PED controversy. I am willing to give Lewis the benefit of the doubt here.

by Marco33 on Aug 7, 2009 5:46 AM EDT reply actions

They stay below the controversy because their drug tests are a joke

No one cares about PED abuse in football, but because baseball fans are so records obsessed there is a huge backlash there.

The Donaghy scandal was a bigger deal than this. These guys play grueling 82 game seasons, is it really that shocking to find out a lot of them take substances to allow them recover from the wear and tear more quickly?

The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.

by Ozzie Montana on Aug 7, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

The way it’s handled also plays a role in it, in my opinion. The MLB did their drug tests, they knew who was doing it and they did nothing (thanks to their player’s union). Now that some third party has the list and is slowly releasing the names of the cheaters, people are feeling cheated to find that the guy they’ve been cheering for didn’t earn his spot.

The NFL, on the other hand, is far more strict about their drug policy. When somebody is caught using PEDs, they don’t hide it. The NFL didn’t stick their head in the sand and refuse to see the possibility that their players are cheating.

wut do u mean alot of them so far i kno of 1

Why didn't he get suspended during the playoffs?

by Birdbrain on Aug 7, 2009 7:58 AM EDT reply actions

So its not just coincidence or that we didnt have KG that Rashard lewis played the best basketball of his career and the magic made the finals?

um, okay so shard tests positive, i got to believe theres many other players out there who are doing them, no? i mean look at dwight howard, lol

by latin on Aug 7, 2009 10:00 AM EDT reply actions

Now let's be fair.

I heard Garnett tested positive on multiple occasions for peanutbutter and jelly.

Is PBJ a PED? :-)

This game took a number of days off my life, but I didn't have anything scheduled.

by nachoman on Aug 7, 2009 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

Not the first

Rashard Lewis isn’t the first player suspended for PEDs. Chris Anderson, now playing for the Denver Nuggets, was suspended for 2 years back in 2006 for PED abuse.

by gyrmnix on Aug 7, 2009 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

were talkin 2 guys not the majority of the league they need to get rid of it now b4 it turns into the mlb

by celtics94 on Aug 7, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I fully agree with you, and the NBA, in both cases, is taking firm action against it. The drug that Lewis was caught with is a very minor performance enhancer, if it enhances at all. Considering that, a 10 game suspension is very harsh. I wish the NBA had suspended Anderson indefinitely but, only because he annoys me.

The NBA and NFL are already miles ahead of the MLB in this regard, they are doing drug tests and taking action when people are caught. They aren’t hiding the names of their star players who get caught. Of course, this is assuming that people like Garnett, Bryant, James, Duncan, et al. aren’t taking PEDs and are not coming up positive in these drug tests.

But, my post was merely to inform that Lewis wasn’t the first. I’m not trying to imply that since these two did it, the entire league has done it. Only 2 players out of the entire league for the past 3 seasons isn’t a bad track record.

by gyrmnix on Aug 8, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

wasnt that suspension for drugs and alchol also tho

by celtics94 on Aug 9, 2009 3:20 AM EDT up reply actions

This could end up effecting the race for the number 1 seed in the East...

The Magic will be missing out on one of their top 3/4 players for the first 10 games of the season… With all their adjustments other the off-season they will have to get used to them and now they are going to have to adjust again when Rashard comes back.
