Shelden Officially Signs

Welcome to Boston Shelden

So much for my hope of reading something else into the fact that Williams had not officially signed yet.  He's now signed up and officially a Celtic.  Via the team press release:

The Boston Celtics announced today that the club has signed free agent center/forward Shelden Williams to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Williams, a 6'9", 250 lbs center/forward, was originally drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. The former Duke Blue Devil has posted career averages of 4.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in 14.7 minutes per game. After being acquired by the Minnesota Timberwolves from the Sacramento Kings on February 19, 2009, he appeared in 15 games for his new team and averaged 4.9 points and 5.0 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game.

Well, we certainly can't be any worse for having him.

He provides Glen Davis with an incentive to face up to reality and sign a reasonable contract. Secondly, though he can’t replace a missing Garnett, he could fill in for a missing Glen Davis and perhaps partially even for an absent Wallace or Perkins.

So welcome to the Green, Shelden Williams.

Couldn’t agree more. Plus the guy’s smart. So there shouldn’t be any lag time for him to try and understand what he’s supposed to do.

Feels good to see a deal closed.

Now close the Daniels and Davis deals.

Indeed

Say what you want about Shelden, finally they got a deal done, which means the Celtics are at work.

And then they’re close to a deal with BBD. Can’t say I’m not pleased with this. : )

The guy is going to be a great pick up…he’s never had a big man coach like Clifford Ray

Hmmm...

I watched some of his Duke games and thought that he would be another Dukie busts. I hope he regains his Duke form and help the C’s with number 18.

Anyone know the terms of the deal?

If it’s a one year deal (for the vet min) I think he looks like the perfect candidate to be a throw in expiring contract to be dealt at the trade deadline. Especially because he will most likely be rendered obsolete when baby signs.

His stats sound like another POB to me.

by braz on Aug 8, 2009 6:20 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, except that his rebounding has been better than each of Powe’s three seasons.

by P2 on Aug 8, 2009 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions

rebounding

This guy at least seems to be able to board. He would have averaged 10 boards a game in under 30 minutes. Not bad for a sub. Looks like he may give us valuable defense/rebounding depth in case of injury.

With Sheldon signed and BBD almost signed there will be no room for Robert Swift.

THANK GOD!

Robert Swift is TERRIBLE!

sheldon= depth. he is an excellent pickup.now it’s up to doc to be creative with minutes. rebounds win games more than anything else.

hmmmm

i guess i thought we needed a point guard to back up rondo – not yet another big man who won’t see any minutes. unless this is all just KG insurance??

Hudson

Does the lack of a veteran point guard signing signal high hopes by management for Hudson?
