Daniels Signing Official

via the Celtics press release

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that the club has signed free agent guard Marquis Daniels to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We feel that Marquis' ability to play multiple positions will add great versatility and athleticism to our team," said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations.

Daniels spent last season with the Indiana Pacers and averaged a career-high 13.6 points and a career-high 4.6 rebounds per game. The former Auburn Tiger scored 20-or-more points 12 times during the 2008-09 season. Daniels would also post career-highs in points (733), rebounds (248), field goals made (311) and attempted (689). The 6'6, 200lbs guard posted all of these career-highs while appearing in just 54 games (43 starts). During his rookie campaign with Dallas in 2003-04, Daniels was named to the All-Rookie Second Team. Despite playing limited time until March, Daniels impressed over the final 24 games of the season averaging 14.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.50 steals in 30.7 minutes per game. Daniels ranked eighth among rookies in scoring (8.5 ppg) and led all rookies in field goal percentage (.494). Daniels has made three trips to the postseason and has posted career averages of 6.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 36 career games. Daniels' best postseason came during his rookie campaign when he averaged 15.8 points in five games.

Good Signing.

This was a very good signing for us. Great 6th man type. He play at 3 spots. I very happy.

Who’s this Daniels guy? Wow, this came out of the blue.

by no kidding on Sep 1, 2009 6:51 PM EDT reply actions

no kidding:

Marquis Daniels has actually been in the league for 5 years. He played on a high profile team in Dallas for a couple seasons and then for a less well-known Jim O’Brien-led Indiana squad for the few. He’s been rumored in deals with Boston all summer and his name has been on Celtics blog in a new post pretty much daily. This didn’t really “come out of the blue” and I’m surprised someone who posts as often as you would have missed this. no kidding.

Relieved that Daniels finally signed.

But it would be cool if we knew for how many year we have him under contract. One or two?

by Drucci on Sep 1, 2009 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

well

I like the Daniels signing because anyone who can steal some of TA’s minutaes will help this team.

that being said, his numbers are a little misleading. While 13 and 4.5 looks like a pretty big addition on paper, his PER the past 3 seasons has been 11.67, 11.65, 12.88. Even his ‘career year’ was below the league average.

I don’t care about his numbers. Now it is up to Doc Rivers to maximize his asset.

Sheed, BBD, Williams?

by stevenfuzz on Sep 1, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, I know right

C’s clearly made it their priority this summer getting big man help off the bench. Don’t know what this guy is talking about.

The main reason I’m happy we SIGNED Daniels is that it means Billy Walker stays and will have the chance to earn rotation minutes.

by Greg on Sep 1, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

No, we SIGNED him because we COULDN’T trade for him. This doesn’t MEAN Walker will get minutes.

They said he would have played at the end of the year if they were still in it so I think he’s fine.

Was there anything about Daniels on comcast at 6:30? I was at work.

1 year deal

just watching the sox and NESN reported it is a 1 year deal

by PPisthetruth34 on Sep 1, 2009 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

it’s about time. i guess larry wanted danny to sweat a little. we do have depth and doc has got to be able to disperse the minutes fairly and still let the younguns develop. tony will be vying with scal to see who gets the most slinters.

by nazzbo on Sep 1, 2009 9:53 PM EDT reply actions

larry wanted danny to sweat alittle, it was danny that was holding this up trying to make it a sign n trade, larry had nutin to do with the hold up

6th Man of the Year

Anybody know what jersey number he’s going to wear?

by jfarias on Sep 1, 2009 10:46 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

love the Daniels signing but I'm still wondering

who on this team we are expecting to guard Lebrons, Kobes, Durants, etc.? I understand that our team defense lessens the need for a “defensive stopper” per se, but Pierce can’t be our best wing defender AND our go-to guy when we need to create shots in tight games. Quisy cannot be asked to defend the other team’s best wing. Tony Allen cannot be allowed to play more than garbage minutes. Bill Walker cannot earn minutes under Doc Rivers…

…so what is our answer for Monsieurs Lewis, James, etc?
