Dan Dickau Invited To Camp
Well here's a blast from the past. The Globe reports:
The Celtics have offered former guard Dan Dickau a training camp invitation, according to agent Mark Bartelstein.
Dickau, who turns 31 Sept. 16, played last season in Germany, averaging 17.6 points in just five games for the Brose Baskets.
Bartelstein said his client is ready for a chance at better fortunes in Boston. Dickau played 19 games for the Celtics in 2005-06 but tore his Achilles' tendon Dec. 17, 2005, and eventually was included in the deal that netted Sebastian Telfair from Portland.
Dickau could serve as a third point guard behind Rajon Rondo and Marquis Daniels and is a favorite of general manager Danny Ainge.
I'm not that surprised honestly. I expect we might hear a few more names like this being invited to camp. Ainge brings in a few players every year to take a look at before cuts. Dickau will have a chance to win the spot over someone like Lester Hudson. If nothing else, he's available to be a designated free throw shooter.
Update: Via Marc Spears twitter
Celtics considering, but not committed to, adding a third point guard. Possibles include rookie Hudson, vets Ty Lue, Mike Taylor and Dickau

Oh. I am surprised. I don’t see a role for Dickau except perhaps as a “coach” on the floor at practice.

PS
and I don’t mean a defensive coach.
On the other hand, if he’s got something left that will help us, I’m all for giving him a chance this go ’round.

If Dickau makes the team?
If Dickau makes the team, I guess that means no more Scal or Tony Allen. One of them will have to go because you can only have so many whipping boys on one team.
You're thinking about this wrong.
True, a team usually can only have one scapegoat. When we got Luke Jackson, who was the Cavs’ scapegoat at the time, I thought it was to provide a replacement scapegoat, to deflect the scapegoat attention away from Scals because DA figured Scals could contribute something under the right circumstances.
Here, there’s a sudden upsurge (misguided in my opinion) in optimism about TA and Scals. I think DA, once again, is trying to find a replacement scapegoat—not because he is trading TA or Scals (who wants them?)—but because he actually thinks they might be good—or at least OK—if they’re not the designated scapegoats, getting booed all the time.
He’s trying to manipulate fan psychology because he actually thinks TA can play, so long as there’s an unchallenged scapegoat on the squad: that’s my take.

Ickau!!!!
No D in Dickau. ugh. no thanks.

Why???
If you are going to get a backup, why not get a real one like Arroyo? Clover is right; I don’t remember seeing a Celtic more defensively challenged than Dickau.
To be fair to Dickau...
Arroyo’s in the same boat as him: played pro ball elsewhere the last couple of years and aren’t really known for their defense.
Aren’t they around the same age?
Anyways…I’ll still pick Arroyo, I’m not much in love with favoring someone else over Arroyo just because Arroyo’s the one that hasn’t played for the Celtics before.
wait....what?
who even is this guy you’ll have to excuse me for bein retarted on the subject. What does this guy bring to the table can he shoot the 3, can he drive the lane what? who is this guy
i think the celtics should have kept darius miles last season, random
Pay Miles all season because he was able to play a little on a horrible team at the end of the year? Doesn’t make any sense.
There is a reason he was available for so long. GMs aren’t as dumb as some like to think.

I voted for Hudson...
I am so curious about him. 27.5 ppg and 7.9 rpg. When I watch highlights of him, it seems like every shot is a swish. He shoots a thousand jump shots a day. He has incredible range, and that rebounding sounds like another point guard I know of. I hope he gets a shot.
i am with you. we have seen what the other guys on this list can do. they all have been in the leagure for numerous years so why not give an unproven rookie a chance to sit the bench. I mean thats all the 3rd string PG is going to do anyway. i am all about the feel good story’s and lester is one of those. would love to see this kid hit the floor. who knows with his shooting range we could really spread the floor and throw in a different wrinkle against a team.
LETS GO HUDSON

Summer League
His defense was absolutely ferocious. It was crazy to watch him. Apparently his nickname is “molester”, and you can totally see why.
He will absolutely destroy some of these guys defensively.
Offensive game aside, Lester can play scary defense. I immediately loved him in the few games I saw. He never heated up offensively though.
Go figure
Imagine that, all shots in highlights are a swish. What are the odds of that.
Reminds me of the Mark Blount highlights.

I was actually
Thinking about him a couple of weeks ago. Specialist shooter, absolutely no D. But he can bring value if you let him push the ball. We didn’t let him get out into the open court last time.
Guess I'm the minority
Or…singularity….that is actually excited. I know he wasn’t great for us before but i love those Zags and Dickau was one of my favorites. And to be fair to the kid, I’m he at least has better PG handles than Hudson to go with more experience, so why not bring in someone likeable as our 15th guy? I’m all for this.
Does Scal need a friend on the bench that bad?!
Seriously, this guy was an epic fail last time, why would we bring his defense-less ass back?
I get the feeling Scal can get along with players on the bench who aren’t white.

give Lester the Spot
I can remember the summer-Camp interview after he broke his finger and for me its enough from what I heard about him to sign him – I hope Danny will decide to keep him
I asked god and he said: L.A. will lose again next year!! ^_°
Hudson
I guess I just don’t get all the love for Hudson. I get that he’s a draft pick, and we love the upside potential of rookies and all that. But I mean, he was passed over 57 times in a weak draft. He’s 25 years old already.
Of course I’m all for giving him a shot to win the job, but I’m just not that optimistic that he’ll win it.

Wasn’t Marquis Daniels undrafted?
Scouts had placed Hudson higher in the draft. It was his age (25), college competition, and marked past (drop out) that let him slip through.
This kid does have the talent for the NBA though. If he was 22, Memphis, 4.0gpa with lesser talent, I bet he would have been drafted much higher.
Let their talent speak for itself, not their draft number.
We have yet to be able to evaluate the talent as well as the GMs that passed on him who actually say his workouts.
Hopefully he will surprise, but there is no shortage of late picks and undrafted players that the hopeful people invest a lot of emotion into in hopes that they will pan out.

At least give Hudson the chance to fail...
If he doesn`t show immediate promise, then look elsewhere.
Seems that simple. If he can’t show something in camp and in preseason games, then bye-bye. The same for all the other contract-less candidates for the last slot.

Mike Taylor
IMHO Mike Taylor is head and shoulders above the others. He played very well for the Clips last year under difficult circumstances, and I’m not sure why they let him go.
I was delighted when I read that the Celtics had worked him out. Taylor would be an excellent addition.
Dickau is simply horrible defensively. His only positive is his free throw shooting.
Agreed
I couldn’t believe Taylor got so few votes on the poll.

Double D stinks
this has to be a favor to bartlestein ‘cause his client stinks. He stunk 3-4 years ago so he stinks more now. this is a joke and honestly of all the bad post season moves by ainge over the past few years this one might be the worst. I realize the odds of him making the team are slim to none but I have such bad memories of this guy that I am stunned we would bring him back. He is flat out Not an NBA player. He can’t defend and as I recall he can’t get his shot off either. He is as useless as they come. Marbury, high, is a better player than this guy
Some Dan Dickau Theories
1. Warm moving body at pg position in training camp schrimages. I mean, really, they need at least 4 point guards to practice at camp correctly, right? Quis and House are really just the non-Rondo super glue, but they are really no point guards. And best of all, they already know this guy; the Celtics already have experience with getting his hopes up and pushing him aside.
2. Bring in someone to get torched by Lester Hudson. DA is basically saying: here is a European point guard, either destroy him or become him.
Hudson!!
1) If Lue is signed it’s because KG made it happened.
2) Dan Dickau LOL – Not even going to comment.
3) Mike Taylor – Not bad.
4) Flip Murray – Sounds better than everyone here
Give Hudson a chance and if it pans out Ainge wins GM of the year.
Moreover, on Hudson...
Hudson torched Memphis for 35 in 2007-08. They ended up being the NCAA champs and the PG for that Memphis team was Derrick Rose who is the #1 pick and ROY. Nuff said. Give the guys a chance.
Notice the lines against top D1 teams. Vanderbilt, Memphis, and UNLV. It wasn’t a fluke. It’s not just point, but rebounds, steals, etc.

House is a great backup for Rondo. He might need a little help getting the ball up the court, and then the team runs a play instead of House creating offense off the dribble. So he’s not a pure point guard, but he brings a different dimension and changes the game when he comes in, spreading the floor and also bringing a lot of hustle and heart. So really we’re talking about a 3rd string PG here, just an insurance policy if Rondo or House goes down. I’m all for giving Hudson a shot, he was good enough in college that he would have been a well-known name if he had gone to Kansas or somewhere. When you’re talking about 3rd string point guards, it almost doesn’t matter who you get, you can pick up a guy like Dickau on a 10-day contract if you have to. Another point guard would not be my priority if I were DA, I would be focused on getting a solid backup for Pierce, to fill the gaping hole from when Posey left. Scal and The Expiring Tony Allen Contract can be traded at the deadline for someone like Nocioni, and this team would be scary.
House has kind of slipped out of the Rondo backup role
based on his weaker ball-handling skills. He simply can’t bring it up against tough defending PGs and you would never ever want him to dribble & drive into the paint.
Doc prefers to use Eddie in his more natural role as a shooting guard. So he can backup Ray Allen or come in as an additional shooter late in games.
But right now, Daniels is the main backup to Rondo. Even though ’Quis is a hibrid SF/SG/PG, he has good ball handling skills and plays PG better than most 2nd string PGs in the league (and probably better than a few starters as well). They can also use Pierce to bring it up at times when they go with an all-big lineup (Perk+KG+Sheed+Ray+Pierce).
This discussion is ultimately about who, if anybody, they should have as a true 3rd string PG behind Daniels.
My vote is also for Hudson. I want the story-book to continue for this streetball player.
Have they signed him to any sort of a contract yet?
Last Roster Spot
I think the Cs should place Scal, TA, and Giddens on the inactive list to start the season. Scal and TAs value are their expiring contracts come the trade deadline for a team looking for funds to entice the 2010 FA class. Also, they can serve as replacements bearing any injuries. As much as House can play point it’s not his natural position and last year we went out and got Marbury too little to late. Also, Daniels has had a history of being injury prone so we can’t rely on him to backup 3 positions. I think they should sign Hudson to a non-guaranteed contract and if he proves he can backup Rondo we hold on to him. We dump Scal, TA, and Giddens before the trade deadline for a solid bench player or whatever our need is at the time.
What I would like to see…
PG – Rondo/Hudson
SG – Allen/House
SF – Pierce/Daniels/Walker
PF – KG/Baby/Williams
C – Perk/Sheed
If any bigs get hurt activate Scal and move Williams to center.
If Daniels gets hurt activate TA or Giddens
if Rondo gets hurt we are screwed.
I am guessing the roster will look more like this…
PG – Rondo/House/Daniels
SG – Allen/House/Daniels/TA
SF – Pierce/Daniels/TA
PF – KG/Baby/Scal
C – Perk/Sheed/Williams
Walker, Giddens, and Hudson inactive in the D-League.
Seriously, what's happened has happened
But I feel like if Hudson didn’t break his finger, he’d already have a contract. : \ If nothing else, it seems like he can play D, and on top of anything he can provide offensively, which I’ve also heard good things about, I think that’ll be enough to beat guys like Lue and Dickau.
I’ve never heard of Mike Taylor. He’s 6’2", and we’ve said we wanted a tall PG next to House. But, can Taylor see why kids love cinn…I MEAN, can he defend?
Feel Free to Google Taylor
Still learning to play the point, but he’s two years younger than Hudson but has two years of pro experience. Was Bdiddy’s backup.
Maybe Hudson had a good game against Memphis, but Taylor dropped 35 on the Knicks last March. He can play.
I say trade for one...
at the deadline and if we’re going to trade for another wing at the deadline then give it to Lester.
NNNNOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
you’ve got to be kidding me…i seriously don’t know how he’s made it into the nba. he was terrible in his first stint in green and there’s a reason why he’s a free agent…again. i usually don’t question the da’s moves too much but if dickau sticks, i’d put that signing right up with the mega-contract of scalabrine, the drafting of acie earl, michael smith, jon barry, jerome moiso, and trading the likes of chauncey and j.johnson as some of the dumbest moves made in celtic history. hopefully, they just needed an extra body that can dribble a basketball to practice against…like a scout team member or something.
