If Daniels is Backing Up Rondo, Who's Backing Up Pierce?
Good question.

Match-ups really determine that don't they on most nights
My guess is that Doc also sort of rotates PP and RA and plays his proverbial musical chairs with a myriad of lineups. And…………maybe just maybe…..when PP picks up two quicks fouls in the first quarter on some games you might just see Tony Allen coming in or Marquis Daniels and then Rondo simply gets a breather using Eddie House. God forbid we would see NO D Dickau come in to at PG looking for a chair to guard at that point. Lester Lester Lester!!!!
Is it Soup Yet?
Absolutely
It’s not impossible for Daniels to be playing the 1-3 positions. It’s really no big deal. They don’t call it a ‘rotation’ for nothing. Doc just can’t do his five for five substitution.
Will probably see a 9 man rotation
That means Wallace, Davis, House, and Daniels. I expect Rondo to get a lot of minutes. When he is out of the game, look for either Daniels, Pierce, or Allen to handle the ball.

Poooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
TA, MD both would do on any given night. But, come on, wouldn’t we all really enjoy watching Billy Boy’s game start to match the size of his attitude? Also, I like our chances 51-61% of dumping TA and JR for a point or 3. Finally, if we get Tyrun Lee, MD will play a lot more three.

I am all for seeing what SKY Billy has.
He is a PO-tential game changer for us on some nights I think. Will Doc give him PT?
Is it Soup Yet?
baby and powe
I don’t know. But Doc did give powe and baby time, powe in year 2 and baby in year 1. My question back at ya is whether BW will earn the PT?

Earn is an interesting word
You can only earn something when given the chance to You can’t earn your wings being forced to sit in a chair…..time is the great revealor and thus we wait.
Is it Soup Yet?
True
but don’t ya think bbd/powe were given a chance at a young age?
by Black Jack Pershing on Sep 12, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions
yes they were
and they both earned it with the chances they received as did Gomes when he FINALLY got the chance…so I am hoping Doc has matured on this issue a bit and at least give Hudson and Walker a chance to EARN PT while the proven studs take breathers
Is it Soup Yet?
Doc has played young players plenty
Walker did nothing to earn more time when he was put in.

Championship caliber teams don't use games as auditions
You would like to see him get off the chair during games so you can make your assessment. But that is not how it works. The assessment is made through all the other evaluation that you are just not seeing. Frustrating for you not to be able to see enough of Walker to judge, but the games are the performances. Practices are where jobs are won.
Will he earn PT you mean
A continued misinterpretation about how minutes are distributed. Plenty of young guys play under Doc. He makes them earn it however. If your assessment through all the practices and training camp is that Walker has earned that right, and Doc does not “give” him minutes, then you are free to disagree. However, since you won’t have access to all that info, it is hard to really have an informed opinion that can rival Doc’s judgment.
House is backing Rondo, Quisy and Billy will backup Ray/PP. Marquis is the main ball handler for the backup unit, but i doubt Doc will ever have an all bench lineup.

9 man rotation
Yes, you are right, which shoots a big hole in my theory about BW at the 3. I don’t see Doc just throwing out 5 subs. Still, I’m holding out for PT for BW

I was pondering this same question...
I think the order would have to be
1. Daniels (with House as the backup PG)
2. Walker, if he can handle it
3. Scal
4. Tony
Did I miss something?
Did Ainge or Doc say that Marquis is the EXCLUSIVE backup to Rondo? I guess that means Eddie House is Pierce’s backup. Either way it doesn’t matter, they have enough depth.

eddie house is backing up rhondo he is just gonna play off the ball
while daniels, who is backing up pierce, plays the point forward.
they need a legit pg
Rondo is their only one. If he gets hurt or is in foul trouble or just need a breather off the court, they are screwed. House or Daniels cannot bring the ball up against defensive pressure consistently well enough not to be offensive liabilities. Pierce needs consistent rest as well at his age, to cut down to a consistent 30-32 minutes per game. Come on Danny, get us the real deal, a backup point! Also, Dan Dickau, Mike Taylor (who?), Lue, or Hudson don’t exactly quench my thirst.
Too soon to tell, obviously...
A lot of factors will come into play, as others have commented. But I reject the question; I think Daniels is coming in primarily as Pierce’s backup. I believe, until further notice, he’ll split time with House as the backup depending on the matchups.
But who knows? I don’t think House is as bad as some think as the backup point, but again, it depends on who else is on the floor. If Daniels is on the floor, too, as part of the second unit, does it really matter?
We have options. It’d be great to have a concrete No. 2 point and/or a concrete No. 2 small forward, but I think the preseason, the season and whatever Ainge can find at the trade deadline will eventually sort things out. I’m not that worried — yet! LOL.
Lester makes the team...
that’s my prediction. I don’t expect this kid to lay down and allow this chance to be taken from him. As far as playing time, whoever plays the best defense wins the spot. I believe that Marquis will struggle at first with team defense, but he will settle in by January. I think Walker could explode offensively.
i still expect us to do what we've done the past two years and pick up mid-season aquisitions
that’s the way we’ve done things the past two years, why would it change now? two years ago, we brought cassell on board. last year it was marbury. it’ll be interesting to see which teams let go of what players this season, but i’m sure we’ll find a legit and serviceable point guard by around the all-star break.
until then, here’s what i envision.
Rondo/House
Ray/Daniels/T. Allen
Pierce/Daniels/Scal/Walker
KG/Sheed/Baby
Perk/Sheed/Williams
Daniels will bring the ball past half court without turning it over because Eddie’s incapable of doing it. We’ve seen Pierce do this with House in the game before, and Daniels handled the ball a lot last year in Indiana, so we know he can do it as well.

TA, unfortunately
With An Ickau taking over as designated scapegoat, Doc sneaks TA in as backup wing … until TA’s deficiencies can’t be ignored, Daniels returns to his natural position at 2/3, and the lack of a decent backup PG becomes obvious once again.

I thought we had settled this weeks ago. Daniels is Pierce’s backup. He’s simply going to have ballhandling duties.

Did anyone here watch the summer league games...
or hear Danny and Doc’s comments following them?
I am a huge Bill Walker fan having seen him in more than a couple of college games(I thought many games he looked like a better prospect than Beasley). But Bill showed me he could dunk a ball last year and that’s about it. He didn’t look that great in summer league and Danny, Doc and my own observations were that Giddens looked a lot but in the SL.
I’m all for giving Walker a shot if he shows a lot more than he did last year, but at this point he might not even be the best 2008 draft pick on the team.
Uhm...Daniels?
Daniels will most likely play between 25-30 minutes a night. There is only about 10 minutes maximum available on a normal night as a backup point guard. That leaves 15-20 minutes for Daniels at the 2 and 3. Rondo and Pierce won’t spend too much time off the court at the same time, so this really is not an issue. If those two happen to be out of the game at the same time for a while, you just throw House at the point, Ray at the 2 and Daniels at the 3.
SCOTT
not here yet
still believe it’ll be Marbury…no matter, our backup point is not on the roster yet…Danny will shave this roster down if&when he needs to add somebody
What is the latest on Lester?
I for one , do not have a very good grasp on our back up pg situation.
There are way too many variables. Here are a few.
Lester was hurt so i really dont know how he measures up at this level.
Starbury know our system now and could be valuable, but can his attitude be repaired
House does well against some pg, but when teams pick his game apart, he has trouble getting the rock up the court.
T Allen never could get a handle on the handles, he needs those little things that come out of spidermans fingers whenever he climbs
Dickau can score but its negated by opposing scores against him. He might be good to buy a rest for Rondo as we trade baskets , but he causes our bigs to pick up fouls, which is not good.
I guess i would like to read more about Lesters progress and how close he is to making the team. If he is fully healed and how he works in practice.
Dan Dickau when pressed...
… had a hard time bringing the ball up the court three years ago before blowing out his Achilles.
Doesn't matter
I don’t know why you’re making anything of this, Jeff. Come playoff time Daniels and House will backup the 1-3 spots. What positions we label them is really meaningless.
During the season, Walker, Giddens, or Allen may get some PT backing up Pierce, but it’ll only be for 5-10 mpg tops.
Danny likes guys who can play
regardless of exact position, and that is how he has composed the roster. He has mentioned numerous times Daniels’ versatility, which fits into this philosophy. There are only so many minutes to go around. If indeed there are a solid 4 off the bench, Wallace, Daniels, House, Baby, there are going to be barely enough minutes as it is. Not to mention Scal, TA and Williams. If they bring in a backup point, who is going to sit out of those 4 ?
Danny does not envision position for position backups like the fantasy GMs on this blog. He has 4 quality players off the bench, some who can play multiple positions. It will be a challenge for Doc to split up time with the front 9 as it is. A 3rd point, someone who could hold down the fort for 5-10 games if there is an injury I can see, but a regular backup to Rondo is not going to be acquired, as it would mean reducing time from the 4 guys they really like. Think talent, not position when evaluating the bench.
Antoine Walker?
He can play the point. Think about it.
good lord there are some nutty theories on here
Its really weird to see folks saying things like House will backup Rondo but … will play off the ball.
That’s saying House is NOT the backup PG, but rather the backup SG. – which makes a lot more sense.
Basically, folks should stop trying to slot backups behind people and rather slot them by position. Who can play each position and in what preference Doc would send them out there in that role?
I.E. – here are roughly what I believe the team’s depth is by position (not meant to be comprehensive, so please feel free to post additions/corrections). Not certain about the depth order past 2 deep – that’s going to be completely situational.
C – Perkins, Sheed, Williams, KG, BBD, Scal
PF – KG, Sheed, BBD, Pierce, Scal, Walker? Williams?
SF- Pierce, Daniels, Sheed, BBD, Scal, Walker, TA,
SG-Ray, House, Pierce, Daniels, Hudson
PG-Rondo, Daniels, Pierce, House, Hudson, ?
The main point is that there are several guys that can play mulitple spots on the floor and that gives Doc a lot of versatility. Also, guys who’s name appear in fewer spots in the grid have less value – unless they are on the left (i.e. Perkins & Rondo). That’s why Danny & Doc like guys like Sheed, Daniels, BBD & Scal – they can play more than one position, which helps tremendously. Some guys can play other spots but you really value them so much at their primary (Ray Allen at SG) that you don’t really want him elsewhere (i.e. Ray probably could play PG in a pinch, but you don’t want him there. If he’s on the floor, you want him off the ball.).
That little grid also makes it clear why the bulk of the playing time is going to be spread across just 9 players: The starting 5 plus ’Sheed, Daniels, House & Baby.
Other than complete garbage time, I don’t believe you will ever see a lineup on the floor that doesn’t include at least one of the starting 5 or ‘Sheed (who’s like a 6th starter).
Celtics need a back up point guard
The Celtics need a back up point if they want to win the title this year.
Give Hudson a shot, If he can cut it great.
If not sign Marbury or another free agent.
As long as the C’s have a competent back up point guard they will be fine.
