Delonte West Arrested

Delonte West arrested on weapons charges

CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested Thursday night near his offseason home in Maryland for weapons possession. West was pulled over by police on his 2009 Can-Am Spyder motorcycle in Brandywine, Md., at 10 p.m. Thursday night for excessive speed and making an unsafe lane change. A Prince George's County police spokesman said West had two handguns and a shotgun in his possession and he cooperated with police as he was placed under arrest. He has been released on his own recognizance. Court records indicated West was being charged with multiple counts of weapons possession in addition to traffic citations, although police said the paperwork was still being processed.

Hate to see this happen to a guy that I've enjoyed watching for years.  Add this to his bout with depression last year and various injuries over the years and you could say that he's had some real ups and downs in his still young career.

Update from Wash. Post after the break:

Star-divide

Delonte West, a guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, was driving a three-wheeled motorcycle north on Interstate 95 near Route 214 in the Largo area when he cut off a Prince George's County police officer, authorities said. The officer pulled him over, and West told the officer that he was carrying a handgun in his waistband.

That prompted the officer to call for backup, and investigators found that West was actually carrying three guns: a Beretta 9mm in his waistband, a Ruger .357 strapped to his leg and a shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back, said Maj. Andy Ellis, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department.

West, who is 26 and lives in Brandywine, was arrested and charged with speeding and two counts of carrying a handgun, Ellis said. He was released today on personal recognizance, according to Ellis and online court records.

Ellis said it was unclear where West was going and why he was armed.

Delonte Wild West

That guy is ridiculous.
Real shame. Always liked him. Hopefully he won’t get 2 years in the pen cause he didn’t shoot himself…

Was that wrong?

I got love for the guy. Depression is no joke and I give him a lot of respect for battling through. Good luck Delonte Wild West… I hope you get a different lawyer than Plax.

really, really weird stuff. A shotgun carried in a guitar case? handguns strapped to his body? While riding a motorcycle at excessive speeds? You know he was imagining himself as some kind of Japanimation comic book superhero.

UPDATE – Per Brian Windhorst’s Tweet’s, the situation with Delonte West isn’t getting any better -

Details on Delonte getting worse, from Wash. Post: 9 mm in waistband, .357 strapped to leg and shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back

Windhorst went on to say -

Also, apparently he was pulled over after cutting off a police cruiser on the highway. All guns were loaded.

Stay tuned, I have a feeling this could be in the news for awhile.

Please get help, Delonte

Sometimes you have to try multiple times to get the “right” help, but it is worth it, and it is out there. Carrying weapons while you are suffering from depression is not a good thing.

by thirstyboots18 on Sep 18, 2009 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

absolutetly nuts

I cannot believe this story. What the **** is Delonte doing? If your strapped on a motorcycle the gun can go off by accident. What in the world is he thinking. What could he possibly be accomplishing with 3 guns He’s either going to get a huge amount of drugs, or I couldn’t even imagine what he was doing. If Delonte gets suspended the Cavs are done. Sure the Plaxico story was a little crazy, at least it is somehwat understandable if you are in Manhattan at night time going out. Carrying 3 guns in the middle of the day is outrageous, and loaded too.

by Rocci1212 on Sep 18, 2009 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

Were they legal?

Because that was the main reason Plax is in so much trouble- that and NY has some very tough laws about concealed weapons- I don’t know what laws Maryland has…I guess none of this stuff phases me anymore, as I thought the weirdest part of the story was a 3-wheeled motorcycle- now that is nuts…

by jambr380 on Sep 18, 2009 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

depressed too

I feel bad for Delonte if he is suffering through depression and hope he gets past it and moves on with his life. However some of these big time athletes put too much pressure on themselves. Think about it. If you signed a multi-million dollar contract and have a couple million dollars already earned from playing pro sports or have a couple million saved up, just buy an affordable house and relax and have barbeques and pool parties all the time. Forget about playing basketball if it is too stressful, just retire and relax with the money you made. You never see an athlete do that.

by star18 on Sep 18, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

depression

I think depression is like alcoholism in that you don’t “get past” it, you try to learn, through behavior modification and drug therapy, to somewhat control it. It is really a tough disease, and you may go through many kinds of therapy and/or drugs before you find the right one for you.

I would have probably been beaten half to death, and then charged for assaulting the officers fists with my face.

West is unraveling. Especially during the offseason(s). I think this mental stuff is really hitting him hard – we always knew he was a bit of a crazy man in Boston when he made some ridiculous (albeit funny) remarks on CSN during interviews with Tanguay and Dickerson and post-game comments. I wonder how much longer his sanity is going to last – seems like he’s seriously plagued by not only depression but also rarer things.

What not to do when packing 3 guns...

cut off a police car.

I’m not sure why the officer called back up. When you have a permit, and a gun in the car, you are supposed to notify the officer. I don’t know the gun control laws in MD. But was he acting irrationally?
I’m not sure why everyone is jumping to his problems with depression. If he’s taking his meds, there shouldn’t be a problem. It isn’t like depressed people run around shooting people. If he was suicidal he wouldn’t be riding around w/3. Can’t he just be strange? Dennis Rodman strange….

by cavman on Sep 18, 2009 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

Sometimes meds need to be adjusted, or he may have missed a dose, or he may not be taking meds at all. In a state of depression people are not thinking clearly. Riding around with guns is a sure sign that he was not thinking clearly. Suicide is one possibility…crime with a gun is another…going home to sleep is another. You can’t take a chance with his or other lives, knowing that he has this problem.

by thirstyboots18 on Sep 18, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

and this is why

people are afraid of the “stigma” of depression.
Yes, sometimes meds need to be adjusted. Sometimes people stop taking meds.
But not all of their problems are the result of depression.

None of us were there, and therefore unqualified to make any assessment of his mental state until more information is released. To leap to the conclusion that this is connected to depression is unfair to Delonte.

How is it good for him, or any citizen of a civilised society to be carrying around loaded guns in public? America as a society would be much better off if the gun carrying culture could be changed, but there are always idiots like you out there championing the right to bear arms!

idiots?

here in America, it is part of our Constitution. Funny how the places with the highest rates of violent crime, including the use of guns, usually have the most gun control laws.

Responsible people have been carrying guns in public for a long time- I know many of them. They haven’t had incidents. They don’t suddenly go on crime sprees.

I don’t own a gun, but if I lived in a different part of the country I’d probably get one to protect my family from thugs. But despite the fact that many people where I live do own guns, the crime rate is fairly low. Or maybe that’s one reason why it’s low.

Re: possesion laws in MD

from the interweb:
“Carrying and Transportation in Vehicles
Rifles and SHOTGUNS being transported in motor vehicles must be UNLOADED.

It is UNLAWFUL for any person WITHOUT A PERMIT to WEAR or CARRY a HANDGUN, openly or CONCEALED, upon or about his person.

It is also UNLAWFUL for any person to knowingly TRANSPORT A HANDGUN IN ANY VEHICLE TRAVELING ON PUBLIC ROADS, highways, waterways or airways, or upon roads or parking lots generally used by the public….

A person may transport a handgun if they can demonstrate that the handgun is being carried, worn or transported:

    * To or from a place of legal purchase or sale, or repair shop.

    * Between a person’s bona fide residences, or between his residence and place of business, if the business is operated and substantially owned by that person.

    * While engaged in, or traveling to and from a target shoot, formal or informal target practice, sport shooting event, hunting, trapping, or dog obedience training class or show.

    * By a bona fide gun collector who is moving any part or all of his gun collection from place to place for public or private exhibition.

During transportation to and from the above places the handgun must be UNLOADED and carried in an enclosed CASE or enclosed HOLSTER. "

It's my understanding that most states don't have laws restricting gone ownership for depressed people...

Generally, I think it takes somebody being institutionalized in most states before their right to have weapons is restricted.

I don't understand the MD Statute

Aside from sport/target shooting, the justification forallowing people to carry handguns is self defense. If the gun cannot be loaded, what good is it for that purpose?

And why are guns needed in a dog obedience class? Is that so you can shoot (or at least terrify) the dog if it disobeys?

West’s father, Dmitri West, said, “All I can say is Delonte was looking behind his back and protecting himself.” He said his son was looking out for both specific people and because he was generally concerned about his well-being as a high-profile athlete. He declined to say who might be targeting the NBA star.

I can understand famous athletes wanting to protect themselves and feel protected when they go certain places, not when you are flashing through. If you are riding a bike like that you are flashing, you don’t see bikes like that on the road very often. If you don’t want to get yourself in trouble, don’t flash, it is as simple as that. Don’t drive the $100,000 benz with iced out rims and a couple of chains anywhere it is stupid. Drive a regular car, wear a regular T-shirt and a pair of jeans. Looking for extra protection because you are extra on the “flash” is just plain stupid.

Overseas readers of this blog shouldn't get the wrong idea from this incident.

America isn’t a Tarentino movie. If there were highway cops stopping people all over the United States by the hundreds of thousands on any given weekend, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone as heavily armed as Delonte West was on that particular Thursday night. His situation was definitely unusual.

by no kidding on Sep 19, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Bi-Polar Disorder

He isn’t just “depressed” he has Bi-Polar disorder. Very high, high’s and very low, lows. The most severe cases involve hearing “voices” and seeing “things”. The medication for this is very strong hence the term “going off his meds” when someone does some crazy stuff. Lord only knows what was going through his mind when he decided to arm himself. It’s a good thing he was stopped before anything happened.

This is why many states during the apply for a gun permit process check mental health history. To me, this doesn’t sound like a case of an NBA player being “flashy” but rather someone with severe mental problems going through some sort of delusional episode (The Zombies are coming? End of the World?) with access to lots of firepower. I hope he gets the help and monitoring he needs to keep his mind level.

by Marco33 on Sep 19, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

fact or guess?

I have not read this about him. It may be true, but …
If he were having an manic episode he would have been Baker Act-ed. He would not have been released, esp on his own recognizance. This would indicate he was NOT having delusions, paranoid ideation or other symptoms of a manic episode at the time of the event.
