Over/Under 57 Wins

ESPN writers predict 57 wins for the Celtics (good for 2nd behind the Cavs in the East).  CelticsHub makes a good case for a 57-25 record. In the last two years the Celtics have won 66 and 62 wins.  Will they continue the downward trend or will they maintain the frantic pace they've been on?  What do you think?

I understand CH's argument...

… but we won 62 games with KG missing a lot of the season. Adding Rasheed and Daniels should keep us over 60.

Depends on KG

I want to see KG in preseason, hope he is 100%. If KG is back to being KG I agree with RH’s statement. We improved our weaknesses.

Over 50

Please.

We went down without any bigs to finish out last season. For the first half of last season we were playing much much better than in 07.

Easily over 60.

by stevenfuzz on Sep 2, 2009 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

I meant, over 60 as the title, rather.

by stevenfuzz on Sep 2, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope they win 57

It might mean they rested their players during the regular season, and didn’t overuse them. I don’t care what seed the C’s have. If they are totally healthy going into next year’s playoffs, watch out!

by libermaniac on Sep 2, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

completely agree.

I’d like to see the big 3 plus Wallace average around 25 minutes per game until the last 3 weeks of the season or so, and then ramp up the minutes to near 40. Speed up entering the playoffs, don’t limp in.

by dslack on Sep 3, 2009 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm with all of you...

Unless we have an injury or our stars go way down hill, this prediction just doesn’t make any sense…last season proved that even with a depleted lineup, we could still win 60+ games, and now we actually have a good bench. I also think there is more of a gap between the good and bad teams in the east. Sure, we may lose a couple more games to Cleveland/Orlando (and that’s a stretch), but should definitely win more against some other teams…

65 Wins

Assuming that Garnett, Pierce and Rondo stay healthy.

by Brickowski on Sep 2, 2009 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

I totally agree...

I honestly don’t understand what allot of these writers are looking at. If healthy, how do we win less games? I don’t know about other’s opinions, but I think this team is built to win it all. I like some of what Orlando did, but did they really change all that much. I actually think getting rid of Rafer was a big mistake. I just don’t see Nelson penetrating our front court, or keeping up with Rondo for that matter. As far as Cleveland, they’ll be tough, but I don’t really like the O’Neal move to be honest. I think that team needs to run.

by B-ball on Sep 2, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

They are cracked

I predicted 65 wins prior to 07-08 and was too conservative. I didn’t predict last year, given the loss of Posey left me unsure. This year I’m predicting 70 (but we have to have the kind of health we enjoyed during the banner 17 run).

by Datahog on Sep 2, 2009 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

Silly

Honestly, how can you seriously argue that a healthy C’s team that missed KG for 25 games and had no bench and still won 62 games is going to win less than 60 games?

Even if they take it easy on the starters, they’ll still win at least 60. If everything goes right, they might win 70.

2008 Champs - Current line ups

2008 Team Current Team

 Rondo < Rondo

Rajon Rondo has matured into a strong young point guard. He has improved his shooting and I think he’s learned how to take over a game when he’s hot. I got the current Rondo better than the 08 Rondo.

 Allen < Allen

This ones tough. Ray Allen has a shot and everyone should agree with that. We all remember his slump in the 08 season. His legs we’re younger 2 years ago too. But I see it as he’s learned his role. When he’s in with the second team, he leads them just like when he was in Seattle except not as strong. I got todays Allen better.

 Pierce = Pierce

There about equal. Paul Pierce is this teams Kobe. He’s always there when we need a big shot. Pierce is the Truth.

 Garnett > Garnett

I got the 2008 KG better here. He was younger and healthy. This year I’m not sure if he’s going to stay 100% healthy. I think Kevin is the difference, if we have a healthy big ticket, banner #18’s ours.

 Perkins < Perkins

Kendrick Perkins is a smarter, stronger big man today then he was in 2008. His defense has improved significantly. Hopefully he will stay healthy also. Perkins is better today.

2008 Bench < Current Bench
I think that the bench we have today is better offensively. We’re still trying to figure out that back up point guard situation. Rumors we’re we were going to attempt to get Carlos Arroyo, I don’t know where that’s gone. With the new acquisition of Marquis Daniels, I see him as this years James Posey. Daniels will help incredibely, knowing he can play the pg spot, 2 spot or even back up Pierce at the SF position sounds great. If we don’t grab a back up point guard maybe we could have House and Daniels bring the ball up. I’ve seen some comments about us winning #17 without a back up point guard, we had Sam Cassell.

I think we’ll play the L.A. Lakers in the finals and come out with #18 in 6 games.

GO CELTICS!!!

by jfarias on Sep 2, 2009 11:04 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

You asked about Arroyo

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-43-92/FIBA-Americas-Qualifier—Day-3.html

If you re-read the article about him that was posted on Saturday, it says:

“Carlos Arroyo is ready to return to the NBA. However, the Puerto Rican guard, who last played in the NBA with the Orlando Magic, won’t reveal the names of the teams that are allegedly having talks with his agent — not until the FIBA Americas Championship in San Juan concludes.”

It ends September 6th. Cross fingers, etc.

Pierce > Pierce

And Allen might be > Allen, too.

by dslack on Sep 3, 2009 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm Not Predicting Any Championships

The playoffs are a crapshoot, as the Dallas Mavericks will attest. An opposing team can get hot, a ball can bounce the wrong way and it’s time to go fishin’.

But 65 regular season wins is a middle of the road prediction for this team, assuming they stay relatively healthy.

by Brickowski on Sep 2, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

I think they win

mid 60s. So I’ll say 64.

I’m just hoping for a healthy year for all the boys in green.

by Fafnir on Sep 2, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

55 wins, 65 wins, I don't care

I just want the older guys healthy and reasonably fresh at the end of the regular season. And I want Doc to break form and actually develop Giddens and/or Walker.

by no kidding on Sep 2, 2009 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

Cutely enough

57 games is the amount of games we’d win if we lost a game this season for every game KG was out last year (82-25). I am well aware that 57 games is an average, but to me, this says what the experts are really thinking.

Basically, 60+ wins isn’t too optimistic barring injury.

by Tai on Sep 3, 2009 12:14 AM EDT reply actions

70 victories in 2009-2010, yea I said it

If healthy, there is no way this team doesn’t threaten the Bulls’ record. We had impressive win streaks and somehow won 62 games without KG for the remainder of the season. You can’t tell me a healthy KG, Sheed & Daniels don’t make this team even better.

by RLB2ESQ on Sep 3, 2009 12:18 AM EDT reply actions

67

totally agree, I’m going with 67 which would be 1 better than the 07-08 team, because this team will be a little better. Check the poll here we have 673 for 58 or better to 39 for 57 or less, so that shows you right there most people believe it to be 60+. The difference between us and Orlando/LA/CLE is that we didn’t lose much. Although you will read that CLE and LA didn’t lose anybody from these crazy writers. The fact is we lost Powe, Starbury & Mikki. CLE loses 4:Wally,Pavlocic,Ben,Joe Smith. ORL loses Hedo,Battie,Alston,Lee. LA loses starter Ariza. For some reason you don’t seem to read that in any articles. We had a vastly better offseason than the other 3 bigs in the league. Of course the Spurs did good too, but we did the best in the offseason, and we were the best team already anyway.

by star18 on Sep 3, 2009 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions

No way. And I hope not.

First, there will be injuries. With key players as old as the Celtics’ are, this is nearly certain.

Second — I hope that injuries will be minimized. And this will happen if the older guys play fewer regular season minutes. And if that happens, the team will not win 70. So, I hope they don’t win 70.

by dslack on Sep 3, 2009 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

injuries

we can limit the injuries big time by getting hafltime leads, and letting BBD,Daniels,Shelden,House & TA or whoever it is to finish the games. Up 20 Big 4 out no questions asked. Don’t want to see Ray in there with 2 minutes to go up 27 against the Grizzlies.

by star18 on Sep 3, 2009 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly star18

Our injuries will be limited due to the increased depth with the second string. It’s ok, I don’t mind everyone jumping on the Cleveland bandwagon because they signed a very old and out of shape Shaq. Once he gets into foul trouble or exhausted, there is nothing behind him. Similarly, I don’t think Orlando improved at all; they either stayed the same or became worse even with Vince “I’ll Let My Mother Fight For Me” Carter. This is the same team we took to 7 games without KG or another big body in Powe.

by RLB2ESQ on Sep 3, 2009 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes.

I thought I explained it clearly.

If they win 70 games, they will flame out in the playoffs. It will be a redux of Dallas 2007, Cleveland 2009, or, frankly, Boston 2009. (Or, the New England Patriots of the 2008 Super Bowl.)

Instead of calling them “the Big Three and Wallace,” I’ll just call them the Old Four. The Celtics need to preserve the minutes of the Old Four. I would much prefer 50 wins with everyone fresh and ready to play big minutes in the playoffs to 70 wins with everyone nursing nagging injuries (bone spurs for Pierce, weird knee issues for KG, ankle issues for Ray, and of course shoulder issued for Perk, etc.).

Winning 70 plus the championship would be great, of course. But to me, beyond merely getting into the playoffs, winning regular season games by playing the Old Four a lot decreases the probability of winning a championship.

by dslack on Sep 3, 2009 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know about you

But while I agree with the general premise of your post, I don’t think the Cowboys, Cavs, or Patriots lost in the playoffs because they “flamed out”, especially not the Patriots. The Pats just got beat by the Giants D, plain and simple. Some people said the Cavs didn’t match well with the Magic, and they were right. Dallas in 2007…I assume you mean the 13-3 team? The Cowboys and Pats got beat by the same team, then.

I agree with the overall point of your post, but anything that could hamper the Celtics’ chances of winning this year aren’t a redux of those teams at all. They’re not worried about injury due to age, the Celtics are, and that’s really the only difference, and at the same time the only true issue for the Celtics.

no, Mavericks

more

So long as they’re healthy, they have a better bench than last year, which (in my mind, anyway) means more than 62 wins.

70 plus

THIS TEAM WILL BE ONE ON OF THE BEST TEAMS IN NBA HISTORY

Sheed is every bit as good as KG. I dont think you people understand just how much of a nightmare Sheed is going to be for all the teams in the league. Everyone will have match up problems against us. Sheed is considered an old man and is still better than Bynum. WE will always control the paint, which means every team will have to shoot lights out ball for 4 quarters. Ok so lest say they play us even through Perk, KG, Ray, and Rondo . What are they going to do with Baby, what about Daniels, what about the 3’s from House. Giddens defense will come in to play this year. Walker will be one to spell PP this year. Every team in the league is going going to have offensive and defensive rotation problems playing us this year.

Pay attention!!! When we get rid of the expiring contracts and get those pick up’s or that one fantastic pick up. It’s going to get real… real ugly for the rest of the league. The further the season goes along the worst is gets for them.

by tyquinton on Sep 3, 2009 1:35 AM EDT reply actions

70 plus is a big stretch.

Chances are the celtics arent going to sweep any of the elite teams

-2 lakers
- 1 spurs
- 1 portland
- 2 cavs
- 2 orlando

that leaves room for only 4 more losses. Very unlikely.

To be fair 57 is an undershoot however, i’d say 64 is a likely number

In Kobe we trust!

by robi s on Sep 3, 2009 5:48 AM EDT up reply actions

???

If I’m reading you correctly, you’re think LA will sweep the C’s? No way, no how. I’ll go with a home-and-home split but no way LA wins in Boston this year. I think Boston will send LA a message in that game and win comfortably.

I don’t see them losing 2 to Orlando or the Cavs either.

by slamtheking on Sep 3, 2009 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions

man I love that picture

I’m gonna go with a nice even 60 wins

I think they’ll steamroll over the have-nots of the league and win most of the games against decent competition

besides, after losing so many to the top teams last year (Christmas, etc) I think they’ll be motivated to win against the elite as well

the only time they’ll think about taking the foot off the pedal is near the end of the season and they still seem to win those games (the other teams have nothing to play for either)

agree with ty

we’ve gotten better,Cavs&Magic are a little worse…age/health to be overcome with depth…flexible contracts when needed…we’re set…plus we’re built to beat LA,pound’m with size…65+ wins and no series goes to a 7th game

by Motown on Sep 3, 2009 7:37 AM EDT reply actions

70 is a possibility

speaking from strictly a talent standpoint, the C’s should win 70 or better this year.

I can understand road losses to LA, SA, Portland, Utah, Denver and maybe Dallas. A road loss to Cle and Orlando too (but not 2 road losses—I think they’ll make the adjustments to win on the road a second time).

A couple of surprise losses at home and a couple of surprise losses on the road to teams that have no business winning. Every team has a few of those games each season.

That’s 12 for a 70-12 record. I think the focus will be there this year to get the title back and to send a message to all the top teams that they intend to win.

by slamtheking on Sep 3, 2009 8:10 AM EDT reply actions

We got better

And we have no good reason to believe KG WON’T play all season.

I see no reason why we’d win fewer with our competition slightly less geared up to play the defending champs.

What does Vegas say?

I’m not a betting man but if Vegas said 57 wins, I might become one. I feel confident they will win over 57 games.

by Little D on Sep 3, 2009 4:46 PM EDT reply actions

65-70 wins seems like a reasonable ball park for these Celtics

It looks like the East will have three 60+ win teams next season … heck, they all have the ability to win 65+ games.

by Who on Sep 3, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

I don't care how many they win,

It’s all about the Big 6 being healthy for the post season and peaking at the end of the season. I won’t worry if they take the Spurs path and focus on saving their strength and pouring it on in the playoffs wherever they play.

As far as KG, a lot of 07-08 was because he was so amped up and it infected everyone to go bezerk with effort. Having Wallace there and a new knee may make KG feel as energetic this year and you just know he wants to erase last year and show what should have happened. Last year I think he played with a sore knee the entire season (as he legendarily played through pain in his younger MN days) and just aggravated it beyond what any normal player could take and THEN injured it and then tried coming back. The man is certifiable and near impossible to keep of the court if he is near it.

And here’s hoping Daniels wins 7th Man of The Year.
