Who is a better rebounder, shot blocker and defender Shelden Williams or Glen Davis?

Id like some fan input and opinions on the following question:

Who is the better rebounder, shot blocker and low post defender, Shelden Williams or Glen Davis?

Though Williams is not a better offensive player than big Baby, I think he is better than Big baby in the 3 specific  categories I mention above.

I think when we need rebounding, shot blocking and low post defense from the bench after Rasheed and the choice is Baby or Williams, I think the better man to turn to on the bench should be Williams.

What do the rest of you all think?

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Definitely Williams,but...

The difference isn’t huge (though I have to give the edge to Williams on all 3, especially rebounding) but Williams is just such a liability on offense…

Clifford Ray work your magic

Sheldon is better in those three areas. But this brings to mind a player from the past Paul Silas) Silas was a great rebounder when he came here. But he learned how to make players foul him after he got the rebound. Once he made that space for himself scoring was no problem. Dave Cowens would not have been Dave Cowens without Paul Silas and his rebounds.

Listen someone is going to get a foul the way Sheldon Williams plays the game. If Clifford Ray can get Sheldon to understand the fine points of rebounding and craving out space to score. Sheldon will be just as valuable as Perk.

This guy has never had a big man coach since he has been in the NBA. He didn’t get big man coaching in Atlanta, he didn’t get big man coaching with the kings. The guy is working off what he learned at Duke University.

I agree...

Williams has always been all the way back from his days in Duke a very good rebounder, shot blocker and low post defender.

I agree Williams is a better rebounder, shot blocker and low post defender compared to Baby.

Baby has not really been a great shot blocker or rebounder over the past 2 years.

Though Baby does not block shots, he is a good low post defender since he uses his bulk well to muscle opponents, proven by the fact he can defend centers well (at times) like he does when he plays against Shaq.

I think since Shelden “LANDLORD” Williams is a better rebounder, low post defender and shot blocker than Baby, we will see alot of him this season especially in the playoffs when his muscle will come in very, very handy when we face Orlando, Cleveland and LA.

Agree on all points except that thing about the playoffs

The team will be in serious trouble if Williams gets significant playoff time because that will mean a big man ahead of him is injured. Perk, KG, Sheed and Baby should take essestially all the 4/5 playoff minutes.

Williams is a better shot blocker and rebounder, Baby is the better offensive player and they’re about even on defense.

I disagree on your playoff point because............

I think Shelden could easily see more playoff playing time then Baby.
I think that because in the playoffs we will be playing very tall, long frontline players when going up against Orlando, Cleveland & LA.

Though Baby is the same weight and height as Shelden, Baby has problems rebounding, defending against and blocking shots of taller, longer players he faces in the low post, which he will have to deal with alot when we go against all those teams mentioned above .

Shelden on the other hand since he can rebound, block shots and thus defend the low post better than Baby, I think could easily see more quality playing time in the playoffs for those reasons.

Another point is playoff play gets very physical and we will be going up against very physical teams with tall, long players and having Shelden come in and use his muscle and 6 fouls against them will come in handy to keep Perk, Garnett and Rasheed as fresh as possible.

I also think that even though Baby is a physically tough player, since Shelden is a more intimidating, enforcer type player he will get more minutes during the physical playoff run.

Anyway that’s why I think Shelden will see quality minutes in the playoffs.

Time will tell though.

Thanks Surferdad for agreeing with the rest of my points.

Not the same height

Shelden is taller – Baby is 6" 7.5’ – Baby has short arms.

Shelden Williams = Leon Powe with Knee Injuries.

If Leon Powe was completely healthy he’d be something special. And he would have been picked higher (but still not as high as Williams was…he was WAY too high)

You are correct....

I also believe Baby is not truly 6’9" but listed him above as such since all media guides list that as his official height.

My proof he is not a legit 6’9" is the picture link below of Baby standing next to 6’4 Gabe Pruitt.

http://media.2theadvocate.com/images/glen+davis_070207.jpg

As is evident Baby is only about 3" to 4" taller than Pruitt at best which would make him about 6’7" or 6’8" only.

Also Baby does have short arms as is proven by his lack of shot blocking cpabilities and poor rebounding numbers.

Williams I think is a legit 6’9" and does have long arms as is proven by his shot blocking capabilities and the picture link below depicting some lanky arms:

Interesting.........

Did you actually see Baby quote his own height, if so when and where can the quote be found?

Or did you ask him yourself personally?

Leon Powe

is the better rebounder and shot blocker

by Red2 on Oct 5, 2009 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

No he isn't...

…not with two busted knees. You really think Powe is gonna come back as he was before? Each knee injury is another blow to his athleticism. It was remarkable how good he was before considering his history of knee injuries and surgeries.

Honestly, we’re all holding onto this idea of Leon we have when he was healthy. He’s not healthy anymore, and there’s no telling if he’ll be the same when he comes back. So continuing to reference how he was better than Big Baby or Shelden is now is pointless.

Maybe Leon was as good a rebounder as Williams is but ............

he was not as good as a shot blocker.

Leon hardly ever blocked shots during his years as a Celtic.

Keep in mind Leon also was a undersized power forward who was also about 6’7" or 6’8" at best who has had trouble against taller, lengthy power forwards.

Williams is a legit power forward and a legit 6’’ 9" who has legit rebounding, shot blocking and low post defensive capabilities who can handle taller and lengthy power forwards much better than Leon could.

I loved Leon, he was a better offensive than Williams will be for us , but I think Williams is a better rebounder, shot blocker and low post defender against big power forwards than Leon was and will help the C’s for those reasons.

by fordescort on Oct 5, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

Agree

Leon was a better scorer.

Williams though should be a better rebounder, shot blocker and low post defender then Powe due to being a couple of inches taller than Powe and having a longer arm wing span.

I like the fact Williams can handle bigger stronger power forwards then Powe could.

If you recall Powe was undersized guarding some power forwards the last few years, but Williams due to being bigger should be able to handle such players better, which will come in handy as we face the teams with big front lines in the playoffs.

I think that Williams shortcomings on offense will be a non issue. Too many other weapons. As long as he can pass, find the open man, he’ll be fine
