Celtics Drop Raptors on Lazy Sunday
Well, at least one Boston team came to play today. The Celtics were able to overcome their (anecdotal) early game blues and defeat the Raptors 114 to 107. This was a game of runs, the Celtics were able to extend the lead into the low teens a few times, and then the Raptors would rattle off a few buckets to bring the gap into the 7-8 point range, just enough so that the Celts could not relax. The Raptors made one last run, dropping the Celtics' lead to four before some clutch free throws from Perkins and a jumper from Pierce sealed it.
Two players really stood out in this one. Rajon Rondo and Rasheed Wallace.
Coming off a Hawks game where Rajon did not appear to be his usual disruptive self, this afternoon Rajon domindated the game, producing a triple double of 22, 10 and 13. Really all that needs to be said is Vote Rondo.
Greg Payne wrote an article after last time the Celts and Raps faced off on how Rasheed Wallace dominates the Raptors. That trend continued today as Rasheed put up is best production with the Celtics, with 29 points (5 of 7 from three) and 8 boards, plus a huge steal with just over a minute to go and the Raptors down six. I wish we could bottle this Rasheed.

This horrible day is now salvaged.
I’ll go watch the league broadband to bring me back to life.
I changed the photo, the AP is slow sometimes getting all the pics up, that was the best available at the time. I like the new one much better – there’s also a great one of Perk dunking, but RR and Sheed seemingly playing against the Raps alone was too good to pass up.
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
Is there a better point guard in the eastern conference?
Rondo will make the trip to Dallas.

good win but doc needs to watch rondo's minutes
rondo played 44 minutes and it’s still clear that we do not have a bona fide backup PG. house can’t cut and while tony allen can do it in an emergency he is not the answer. Although baby struggled I thought he played better in the 2nd half and started to make stuff happen with his hustle plays. This was sheed’s best game by far- not just because of the points but the steals, the post ups and solid D. He’s really starting to grow on me. IG we ever put a fully healthy team on the floor with daniels, kG and a healthy Baby we could be downright scary. we still need to solve the backup pg though. Ainge must have something in mind because I though hudson had a chance down the road to be a decent player
Doc said something about that post-game
… about needing to be able to win without overplaying Rondo, as he did. ‘Course, Doc’s been saying that about Ray since the beginning of the season, but never actually does anything about it. That Doc is a weird dude… seems he doesn’t like to listen…. to himself.
Agree about the backup PG thing… it’s unthinkable that Danny is not aware of the need for one (as he has claimed)… so expect some kind of move in that area.
The problem Doc is facing is that we aren't getting to any blow-out leads
and we simply DO need to win – home court in the playoffs is earned by winning games now.
And both Rondo and especially Ray have been his most efficient players on the court – Ray is tops for the team and Rondo is either 3rd or 4th depending on how you look at it. KG is up there, but injured. Pierce has been injured. In other words, to win games, he needs both Ray and Rondo on the court.
Daniels being out also hurts because he can spell minutes for both Ray and Rajon. TA being out the early part of the season also hurt.
If we can get the rest of the crew healthy, then not only will Doc have the guys who can sub for those two directly, we should potentially have the guns to pull out to more blow-out leads, allowing Doc to rest guys like he wanted to.
Part of the irony this year is that so many of the YOUNGER guys – who are needed to rest the older guys – have been injured. BBD, Daniels, Walker, TA – losing those guys for extended periods is not helping to keep the minutes of the old farts down.
Ray Allen is very quietly having a fantastic basketball year, even though his personal scoring numbers are down. He may be the most valuable player on the team so far this season.
It is a dilemma
…and that’s why he gets paid the big bucks. Two problems: 1) Doc keeps SAYING he has to limit minutes for both RA and RR, but never does it. This does not engender a lot of confidence that he knows what he’s doing.
2) I’ve been thinking for a while now about the whole issue of HCA vs. health. It is arguable… not presenting the whole argument now, just saying that a good case can be made… that it would be better for the team to come into the playoffs at ANY seed… #8, if that’s how it turns out…. by simply forgetting about HCA, and strictly adhering to a reasonable PT scheme for all players. Our younger guys (I used to think of Lester right here, among others) would get more PT… which can’t hurt later on… and we’d just have to win one more game on the road in one or more of those series.
Reason to do #2 = health. It’s a simple 1-to-1 correspondence: more minutes = proportionally increased risk of injury (actually, the risk increases with PT, but that’s not worth talking about now.) Double PT means (at least) double the risk of injury. And while HCA is important, it’s nothing compared to health.
I actually think the Cs have adopted some version of this argument… with what they called “strategic rest”, and with the whole KG thing going on. But then Doc does continue overplaying RR and RA, so who knows. As you say, maybe in the heat of battle he just can’t let games go. Wants to win. After all, that’s what he’s paid to do.
I'm just not sure how you can 'strategically rest' Ray Allen
until KG and/or Marquis Daniels is back.
Eddie simply cannot do all the things on the court that Ray does. You have to consider that Ray is currently part of more rotations than any other player. He isn’t just in as the SG with the starters. His role changes slightly with each different mix of players out there. Eddie has far more limited skills. Same with TA. Daniels is the closest sort of player and when he was healthy he was often performing the floor leader role with the second unit that Ray is doing.
I think we all (Doc included) may agree that it would be better to rest Ray more. But it is simply not easy to do. Especially when Ray is so valuable on the floor. He’s not just leading the team in Net48 this year. He lead it last year too – and is among the NBA top 10 in that category. It is really, really hard to replace a 11 Net48 with someone who is going to be just +5 or less for any stretch of time. Dropping Ray’s minutes by say, 7 (from 36ish) is basically giving up 2-3 pts off the scoreboard each game. That’s brutal, especially since we are already giving up 5 pts each game by not having KG in there.
Spot rest, such as resting him for a game is less meaningful than cutting his regular minutes because it doesn’t really convey much benefit beyond say, taking a practice day off.
If KG is back, (and assuming Pierce, Rondo, etc. are also healthy) then his presence bumps up our net differential quite a bit. He’s worth about a +5 swing over ‘Sheed & Baby. That probably gives you the margin to cut Ray’s (as well as Pierce and the other starters’) minutes back. Subbing in Eddie and TA on the floor for Ray becomes less risky.
Sigh .. chicken and egg problem. ’Need guys to be healthy in order to rest other guys to keep them healthy so they can help rest the first guys …
re: backup pg
good points about RR’s minutes. I’d like to see them limited at 40-ish, but let’s not forget that we are missing Marquis Daniels. He and House make a great 1-2 combo together and when MD is healthy he’ll take the bulk of the backup ballhandling.
Opening up the roster spot was probably a good call. I liked Hudson’s game, but seeing him continuely battle to beat the 8 second violation a couple nights ago was very telling of his ability to play pg (or lack there of..). TA has looked much more up to the task. I think we’ll see Danny activate Ty Lue with that last roster spot post-all star break. He’s already practicing with the team no doubt, so he’ll fit right in.
My feeling is that we won’t need to make any panic trades to fill that hole. Between Daniels, TA’s new found ability to play pg, and the potential to activate Lue who is already working with the team - looks to me that Danny has got us covered at the point.
I still think we are the best team in the league, even more so than I did prior to the season now that I’ve seen how much Rondo has improved. He is an absolute game/series changer with his defense and all-around game.
Great win.
Rasheed and Rondo once again played great.
Baby has to get it going though, so far he has not looked that great.
Hopefully he is just working off the rust.
Any new info on KG status???
I think a lot of people are overlooking what Rasheed Wallace is bringing to the table at the defensive end of the court. He has had a few nice offensive games filling in for KG in a starters role, but his defense on the ball and in the post has been sensational all season long. I was convinced at the time this was a great pickup, and he is proving it. Hes also slowly working his way into much better shape.
Rasheed's defense is not that good.
He’s constantly behind on pick-and-rolls for one thing. Hopefully that will improve as he rounds into shape, but right now neither of our second unit bigs (Baby and Sheed) are that sharp on D. Perhaps Doc should go back to Williams until Davis starts to show signs of his former self.

totally disagree
Wallace is an excellent post defender and unlike Shelden can also play great perimeter defense. One of the jobs of a big in our defense is to be able to step out quickly to contest the perimeter shot from the freed man when we do a double – and then get back in the post. KG and Sheed are both superior defenders because they both do this extremely well. Perkins is slowly getting better at it, but spaces out at times and gets out late (he also doesn’t have the long stride that KG & Sheed have).
Williams is a great post player – an extremely efficient rebounder – but is almost useless at perimeter defense. That impairs the team defensive concept which has us doubling guys on the perimeter and requires us to contest every perimeter shot, with the expectation that a big can come out – either to help on the double or to contest the shot of the abandoned man.
He needs to get better at picking up the switch and coming in and out on defense before he gets more minutes.
BBD is indeed just getting back into game shape – he’s had to relearn to use his butt against some guys that have more length – but even he plays much better Celtic defense than Shelden at this point. He is more experienced in the system and hustles in and out to the right spot.
Rebounds are important – but they are not as important as contesting shots because it is making them take a poor shot that even creates rebounds.
It's another W, but ..
.. the team has not been playing well since beating the Magic on Christmas day. In the past two weeks, they have yet to play a full 48 minutes of good basketball as a team. I hope it is just hangovers from the holidays.
