Celtics Stuff Live: Marc Spears

Celtics Stuff Live welcomed back old friend Marc Spears the show and he did not disappoint, bringing loads of insight about Rajon Rondo's elevated play and his candidacy for the All-Star team. Spears also broke down the chemistry issues in Orlando and the passion of Leon Powe. Wrapping up the interview, Spears provided an update on the movie in production that is based on his script about the harrowing experience of those in the Superdome in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. As always, Marc was entertaining, insightful and more laid back than a fully reclined chair.

Later in the show, Justin and Kevin fielded a call from the Scottsman, bashed some refs, reflected on the team's perseverance in the face of continued injury woes and then debated the merits of Paul Pierce's recent comments about his teammates in the latest piece by Scott Souza. Give the show a listen and join us again tomorrow night as we do a wrap on the Celtics-Mavericks tilt.

Oh hey

Rondo’s shooting 80% in FTs since he missed those two against the Clippers. But you wouldn’t know that from the way he’s ostracized for his FT shooting by random people in the forums or on the front page articles. 8 )

Bleed Green. What does it mean?

maybe someone can clear this up

I had made a few comments in support of giving walker, giddens, and hudson playing time. In response I have heard the following, we are trying to win a title. In response to that I say i agree we are trying to win a title . We as fans also witnessed last year that Paul Pierce carried this team through the regular season with sperratic help from ray ray both logging heavy minutes and what happened as we saw they had no legs, no gas, they were drained and without the play of Rondo and Baby we would have lost in the first round.

Another response has been they are low draft picks , again i say true to that . On the same token quite a few of the names that you consider to be solid to super star NBA players came from the second round.

I also hear they must not understand the defensive rotations or have intangibles in practice. I could see that and its very east for us to say stay prepared and practice hard your number can get called anytime. Truth is it doesnt and Doc has made it clear that it won’t. On the same note I also know that practice can not simulate game play no matter what you play the same people its structured in practice its constantly stopped gone over "micro managed’ its not spontaneous not unpredictable as real game play is .the only way a player gets better or prepared to play is by playing in real game scenario’s. If that wasnt the case you would never hear a broadcaster or former player talking about floor time ,actually playing in front of a crowd ,or coming off an injury it doesnt matter how good you feel in practice we have to see you in game shape.

We also hear that they are just not good enough ,nobody knows that in fact by what we all have seen in the way of athletasism , energy and the comments of teamates and coaching “staff” its exact the opposite.

Another comment has been for us all to give Doc the benefit of the doubt because fore every rondo there is a marcus banks ,true to a certain extent, while we ahve seen the Green’s,the Banks, the Pruitts, we have also seen the jeffersons, the perkins, the davis’s the gomes’s, the telfairs, who was playing great for the clippers before injury. The point is ,is that in asking for a break for Doc your asking for us to call Danny dumb for drafting these kids . Along with that point too is that Doc has said out his own mouth he doesnt like coaching young guy’s,and there is proof to back up the point that if it hadnt been for injury ,allen, jefferson, perkins, rondo, powe, baby, gomes, none of those players would have saw the floor and improved the way they have. Some writers outside might say 34 was hurt in 2006 ,and yes he was for a month but we celtic fans know that we sat him and anyone else who would have given us a chance to win down and tanked the season for that draft pick and thats when we saw jefferson wow that kids good ,gomes damn he’s solid ,Perk good god hes tough, Tony he’s athletic and can defend. we traded all our pg’s away couldnt sign one so docs only choice was rondo THANK GOD, KG goes down, Powe goes down , wow Davis can really play who woulda known. point being without actual game time opprotunities we never will know, and for myself I’d rather know so I can understand what all of my options are ,get rid of them via trade or cut or use them and find out so that when eddie’s shootin us in the foot and cant dribble maybe giddens can help, when Paul is hurting and dead tired maybe Walker can help, when rondo’s been played 40 plus back to back to back maybe hudson could have helped because if rondo goes down we go down. When ray cant hit the side of a barn you know for weeks at a time maybe just maybe we have a young athletic guy who can come in and give us that spark.

I also had about the dumbest question asked of me ,if i thought we should start walker over pierce because so walker could cover lebron, it was a stupid sarcastic question trying to insult my intelligence, so heres my answer no i dont but would like for walker or giddens to give paul rest so that Paul can have the energy to be effective against lbj, we have seen too many times in this very young season paul dead in the fourth and thats pauls time ,Ive even seen him pass the ball off because of it. Do we really want to make it to the playoffs and have our captain done finished beat up hurt because we wanted to play him up til the last minute of games in december january that we either were out of,or up by 20.C’mon please we’re all fans be honest and its not just paul thats been loggin tons of minutes in which tons of them could have been avoided.

No one and I repeat No one on here in their right mind thinks that these kids should be playing twenty a night but yes I do believe 5 to 10 would be great for not only them but for our team as a whole .Our reality is at this point KG is out dont know when he’ll be back we’ve been mislead before,Marquis is out its gonna take a while for him to be playing at game speed wow heard that before somewhere, sheed will be back soon but when is he gonna be in shape other than round ,Rondo has NO backup at all especially now that we gave Hudson away btw good game lester he did a good job the other night for memphis good for him,Paul is already showing signs of fatigue so is Ray, Baby isnt himself yet, eddie has been cold all season ,point being we need all the help that we can get right now ,so if you’d rather kill these guys in january rather than give walker, giddens some minutes just to give these guys a break in some meaningless game or in hopes every night to fight for home court in the playoffs to the detriment of the bigger picture of what we’ll look and feel like by the time we get there,i say your not a fan you are a fanatic you are extreme in you beliefs that its ok to burn these guys up now just to suffer the greater loss later and I am speaking from expirience proof game 7 against orlando last year on our own court we had nothing left, nothing. Also if the hawks have’nt proven to us that we could use 5 to 10 minute out of a couple young athletic guys I say not only that you are fanatical you are also in denial.

At the end of the day I and do not believe anyone is saying that these kids are stars in the making or anything like that but we do believe that we need help we need rest we need youthful athletes for just a few minutes every night I see so much value in that.

Thing is reggie

How do we know they’re doing well in practice? That’s just the assumption that you want us to buy, and I’m willing to think you MIGHT be right, but beyond that, it’s just speculation. You want us to praise them in garbage time….but Pruitt wasn’t that good when he got meaningful minutes, people always said he was too soft. Infact, he got pretty much what people feel we get with Brian Scalabrine. Who knew?

Sorry, buddy, but even Rondo got time his rookie season. I dunno, maybe Doc doesn’t trust the young players, but what are they doing that we could trust apart from being nice and big for their positions? That’s all I get from “young and athletic”. I’m in theory young and athletic and can play D (yes, really, even though I’m 5’11" and can’t really shoot that well), should I go to Boston and try to get a 10-day contract?

by Tai on Jan 17, 2010 4:12 PM EST reply actions

Ugh, and let me contine on from there reallly quickly...

I know you’re probably gonna say I"m insulting your intelligence by asking if I should sign up just because I “fit the bill” in athleticism and what not. The point is, just being a big body, or “young and athletic” doesn’t mean everything. It doesn’t guarantee much except maybe paying your way through college, MAYBE. But, in the NBA, filled with “young and athletic” players as it is, you need more to stand out.

Right now, I have yet to see you say Giddens or Walker have shown more than that. Just that their young, just that they need the time, but like nickagenta keeps saying, you’re not saying why exactly they DESERVE the time except for their measurements.

by Tai on Jan 17, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

thats the entire point the entire thing is none of us know anything thats my point .i will tell you this if we continue what we have been doing forget 18.i will also tell you that i have never praised anyone but God about walker and giddens in garbage time and that was for paul and ray getting rest.i also never praised pruitt and honestly he never got a chance but will tell you when he did play he was hesitant to shoot but handled the ball well and did not turn it over .its ok i got it now you type of guys are cool with our players gettin burnt up before the all star break and to stupid to even find value in 5 to :10 minutes of rest for our players.because within that time walker and giddens are gonna jack up threes and miss when we dont need em ,wallace ,house ,dribble there way into a turnover ,house, allen and tony or maybe do completely nothing, scal ,0’s across the board or maybe to use your analogy they are no better than a 5’11 guy talkin retarded on a blog sure your right you guys are absolutely right.or wait they might just play ok grab a couple boards play decent D and God forbid allow paul and ray to rest..
