How Concerned Are You?

The Celtics have lost 3 in a row and 5 of their last 7.  Seems like a good time to take the pulse of Celtic Nation and see just how far into panic mode we've gone.  I'll try to remember this poll in a couple months when we've either turned things around or gone from bad to worse.

I voted "a little, but with KG back, things will get better".

The team is in a serious slump right now and have no excuses for that. They don’t have the fatigue excuse and nevermind the “KG is missing” because when you get a 10 point lead at halftime it means you are able to sustain it and even extend it in the second half.

I’m concerned by the total collapse of the Celtics in the second half of games lately because it seems that they are aware of it but yet can’t dot anything to stop it.

Very disturbing.

However, I’m not concerned at all for the playoffs. This is January, and as bad as things are, I don’t think this is a sign of things to come but simply a big slump before the All-Star Break. No need to break the core or do something drastic ; trading our expiring dumps for a good bench player with a terrible contract would be a legit move though.

By the way, don’t you think it would be nice to post a new article in which you announce the team will get back on track and starting a long winning streak? You got bold in November and did it, and it came true. Hopefully you can do the same now and the Celtics winning streak will start… although with the way they’ve been playing lately I would understand you don’t have the confidence to post such a prediction. :P

I voted "A Lot"

I’m worried that this team is slipping from the elite class to the good class, just like San Antonio, due to age. Nothing you can do about age. KG can’t fix that!

by celty86 on Jan 21, 2010 7:07 AM EST reply actions

The return of KG isnt going to change the fact that the Club lacks an effective backup for Rajon. That (right now) Baby has been ineffective and Doc seems to have thrown in the towel on Sheldon, so is overplaying RW/KP. That PP/Ra give up a lot in terms of athleticism on the wingThat Tony needs to be playing 25 til Quis gets back (aint saying he’s worth 25, just need him for 25) -but he’s only seeing 16, so overplaying PP/RA. That’s about it. Fine, otherwise.

by Tenacious D on Jan 21, 2010 7:28 AM EST reply actions

I think the Celts should run more plays for Perkins. He has a low post game, that they lack. If, Garnett comes back, it will make things better, but, I think Garnett has reached a stage in his career where the injuries will be a part of him. Wallace has to stop with the 3’s for awhile, he is 6’10" can he post up? As far as Ray Allen, is he in decline or are there stills some 20 point games left. Rivers has to start trusting the bench, his big 3 or 4 are not as good as they were a few years ago.

by Frank3519 on Jan 21, 2010 7:35 AM EST reply actions

What?

Perk has been terrible. Every time they go to him, no matter how many men on the opposing team is around him, he won’t pass and if he does he turns it over.

by Bankshot on Jan 21, 2010 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

Perk is getting killed with double teams

and he can’t handle it, just like PP isn’t quick enough to handle it either.

Everytime Perk is double teamed he turns it over and knowing him he won’t know how to deal with it till next season (I hope I am wrong).

Until Perk learns how to deal with double teams we should limit the number of plays for him

by aboubata on Jan 21, 2010 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

This is true.

Part of it is Perk’s fault – because like others on the team he is degenerating in the 2nd half into the ‘Me Offense’ instead of the ‘Team Offense’. But it is the whole team that’s contributing to that.

Every damn time up the floor in the 3rd period, we walk it up, the ball ends up in somebody’s hands and then everybody else stands around waiting for them to do something while the clock keeps ticking and ticking and ticking …

And of course, in this mode, the other team learns quickly to just swarm to whomever has the ball. Some guys can fight out of that, but Perk is getting killed when he’s swamped like that.

They need to keep the ball moving. It shouldn’t stay in anybody’s hands (except maybe Rondo or Paul’s and sometimes Ray’s) more than a couple of seconds.

by mmmmm on Jan 21, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

I believe the starters are over played. Rondo against the Pistons, over 40min. That is just crazy! They NEED a backup for him, a real backup! Ainge and Doc are crazy for not having one already!
I also believe that once KG is back, itll be a good Barometer as such, as too where the Celtics are at, and if having KG there is the solution. If after a few games they arent upto scratch, make the trade for something else.
I think that is probably the main reason KG is being brought back prior to the trade deadline, to weigh things up a little.

by specwarop on Jan 21, 2010 8:07 AM EST reply actions

A whole lot. We may be seeing the window close.

It is only January, but that being said I don’t see intensity from this group. They should have been up by 20 points in the 1st half but continue to play below the opponents level and they don’t pass the ball like they did last year (even when KG was out).

Are they a different team with KG, Baby with 20 more games to get in the flow and Quis? Of course they are, but this type of play is contagious, it’s an attitude that can spread like bacteria and has; this isn’t all of a sudden, it started with losing home games on friday nights. The players are waiting for the return of Kevin (this is KG’s team, they’re not playing for PP) and hoping he can stay healthy.

I consider the window to be closed if you don’t win the championship, let’s hope it’s not.

9 of 16

The Celtics have lost 9 of their last 16 games, what is wrong with them?

Could it be chemistry?
I see pain in their faces when they get down – it seems no one is willing to step up lately.
They seemed to play better last night when Ray Allen was sitting and Tony Allen was in.
But Ray was out there towards the end – go figure
Now there’s talk of Nate Robinson coming – how would THAT effect the seemingly already eroded chemistry.
Regardless if it’s Nate Robinson, I do believe a trade looms large.

Could it be the lack of the centerpiece?
Without KG in the line up, they are above average, yes – but elite, no.
Their record with him on the court and off is very different.
He’s a difference maker to be sure.
But we cannot put this obvious tailspin on his shoulders when he returns.
IF he returns – (remember last year the team wasn’t truthful with fans about his status)

Could it be age settling in?
Time has a way of creeping up on you –
When KG signed, most folks claimed they had a 3 year window to win a championship.
They won in year one, here we are in year three –
He spent considerable time inactive last year, look now –

Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk

not in the least. For these veterans, this is spring training for the playoffs.Sure, they would like to win. But this should be a learning process for when the real season begins.

missing Marquis

the forgotten man in this is Marquis Daniels

Getting KG back will help a lot by pushing Sheed back to the bench. But the bench will get much better with Marquis healthy again. Not only is he an upgrade over Tony and Scal, but he makes House that much better and helps relieve the backup PG issues that we’ve got.

Is that why

The Celtics seem to collapse in the 3rd quarter, when the starters are in?

Anyway you can get this blog to take the Magic’s old name (thethirdquartercollapse.com)? : )

I'm not worried...YET.

If they are going to go through a slump I would rather it be in January than March. They can and I believe will work through this.

This Team Got Old in a Hurry

The teams with an infusion of young lottery talent are starting to catch up. Any team that can keep Rondo from getting to the basket has a good chance of beating this Celtics team.

by Brickowski on Jan 21, 2010 9:57 AM EST reply actions

KG wont cure all the ills because the ills were happening with him. this team look old and has

a sense that teams will just roll over for them. choking leads away in the 3rd is no a staple of celtics basketball.

by celticinorlando on Jan 21, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions

Bump in the road fellas

It’s january in a long season, get it overwith now. Rankings don’t matter, I don’t care if we get 50-55 wins, just get the team back healthy for the playoffs and watch them roll.

Just hope for magic and cavs rather than hawks and cavs

by Warrior Spirit on Jan 21, 2010 10:13 AM EST via mobile reply actions

It's a Big Bump

Pierce and Ray Allen are playing at half speed. Perkins looks lost out there, especially against a zone. Eddie House looks like a shooter with tired legs. And then there is the issue of the offense completely stagnating when Rondo is not on the floor. Everyone just reverts to one-on-one basketball. It’s pathetic.

KG will help, but even after his return the losing will continue. Everyone in the league watches film and no one is afraid of the Celtics any more. All you have to do is hustle for 48 minutes and at some point in the second half the Celtics will self-destruct. And if all else fails, foul Rondo or Perkins.

This team won’t be magically transformed by KG’s retur, or suddenly become a power in the playoffs. It doesn’t work that way. And the malaise won’t be solved by a token move at the deadline. This team needs a significant makeover.

by Brickowski on Jan 21, 2010 10:44 AM EST reply actions

magic transformations

I don’t know, the team was pretty magically transformed when KG arrived the first time and that team had less talent than this one (Rasheed and Marquis).

If KG comes back as the fiery, borderline crazy leader that he was, then I think there will be a magic transformation. If he comes back a new kinder gentler KG worried about his knees (see Big Baby and his thumb), then we are indeed in trouble. Hopefully, we’ll start to find out on Friday.

Fire in the belly?

Don’t see much. Need more board-work….Perk 35 minutes, 4 boards. Not acceptable.
Look at team stats….out-rebounded, game-in-game out.
Need to re-focus on snatching ’bounds.
They have the bodies, but do they have the mindset?
Are they jaking it until crunch time in the Spring?

by hondo68 on Jan 21, 2010 10:51 AM EST reply actions

Our Bigs aren't rebounding.

Our guards and small forwards have to get all the boards this slows the break. KG is our best defensive rebounder and starter of fast breaks. KG brings a lot of things to the table and with out him we can’t fill the cracks. Marquis Daniels is the same. They both do all the little things that give you a win. They are sorely missed.

by liamail on Jan 21, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

True, but Doc has to rally the troops and get some mileage out of

Wallace, Baby, and others to work harder until they’re at full strength.

by hondo68 on Jan 21, 2010 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Stop Whining!!!

God, I’ve never heard so much belly-aching in my life! Even KG said this stretch of games was the “grind”. Which makes me think that his injury might of had a little R&R thrown in so he will be fresh come April.
They have yet to play a game, 1 GAME, with their full roster. Think about it.
I really don’t care if they go on a 10 game losing streak now because any game they play now is not indicative of how they will play in the Spring…

by paul7x5x on Jan 21, 2010 10:59 AM EST reply actions

by hondo68 on Jan 21, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

Pistons fan here...

I’ve watched the C’s a few times this season, including last night of course.

To be perfectly honest with you, your current team reminds me of the Pistons from 06-08 — a very, very good team with established veterans who believe they can win every night.

That’s a very good thing to have, as a fan. However, those Pistons (at least in my view) crossed the line from confidence to overconfidence, and it bit them on the ass time and again. There came a point where we couldn’t just “flip the switch” anymore … it seems to me that Sheed has brought that with him.

The thing you currently have that those Pistons lacked (after Ben Wallace left) is KG. As much as I don’t like him, he’s the kind of guy that won’t let the team lose its edge.

As an outside observer, I’d say that if you can stay healthy and find ways to limit your vet’s minutes, you’re still a legit contender (although hardly a shoe-in). A healthy C’s team is capable of beating anyone in the league in a 7-game series …

by brgulker on Jan 21, 2010 11:09 AM EST reply actions

We are not coasting.

Don’t you think it’s better work the bugs out now than say, oh I don’t know, April!?

by paul7x5x on Jan 21, 2010 11:14 AM EST reply actions

Win or not this year, with no trade window will slam shut

We can debate all we want as to whether the C’s have enough to win it this year, if healthy. I’m leaning heavily towards no.

But, either way, if the C’s let Ray Allen’s contract expire without trading him, how are they gonna get any better over the next 3-4 years with no assets worth trading and only late 1st round picks. I fear, without a Ray Allen trade, Ainge will doom his team to the same fate that he urged Red against with the late 80s C’s.

by libermaniac on Jan 21, 2010 11:27 AM EST reply actions

trading Ray *only* makes sense

if you are punting on THIS year.

There is NO WAY, imho, they will get someone for Ray who can help them win THIS year.

The only way I can see them trade Ray is if they give up on winning this year and are restructuring for the future.

by mmmmm on Jan 21, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Sure they could

Iguodala for one, but there are plenty of others, including a Kevin Martin/Beno Udrih package, Boris Diaw/Gerald Wallace, and of course Chris Paul.

Some teams will be blowing it up (or at least trying to) at the deadline, e.g. Washington and Philadelphia. The question is whether or not Celtics’ management is willing to take on longer contracts, as opposed to doing nothing and then hoping to resign Ray on the cheap over the Summer.

by Brickowski on Jan 21, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

you go to the game, plunk down a fews bills to show the kids a good time...

and end up leaving on a sad note……what ’s the perspective? winning and putting a good product on the floor for the fans, or just going through the motions until the end of the season?

by hondo68 on Jan 21, 2010 11:30 AM EST reply actions

Not worried at all.....

…..only because I gave up on them in November!

Haven`t seen the debacle first hand {vacationing in SoCal in Jan./Feb.}, but it doesn`t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out the problems.

The Celts are now capable of losing to any team on any night. Not only do opponents no longer fear them, they cannot wait to play them! They can`t even compete with the Bulls at home! What more needs to be said?

All teams have slumps. But, teams that win crowns do not go 4-8 over any 12 game stretch. You might see them go 7-5, but never anything resembling 4-8, which will likely get even worse very soon.

The return of a fragile, tentative KG will have little effect. Same is true of Marquis, who did little to excite when he was healthy.

Forget old age….rigor mortis has set in!

LAZY LAZY LAZY

They are playing with no heart – Don’t expect KG to comeback 100% I’m sure he’ll be out again 5-10 games after he returns.

by ziggen on Jan 21, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions

I agree

The phrase “playing with no heart” may be cliche, but it’s true. The team has demonstrated a few times they can play and beat elite teams without KG.

Without KG they lose a defensive presence that other teams have been exploiting. The team needs to fill the void with more energy, having more plays for other team members, and play with a sense of urgency.

The Big Baby confrontation with a Detroit spectator should not have happened. His immaturity is a distraction. Doc doesn’t want to show he’s bothered by in post game interviews, but I’m sure in the locker room the problem will be rectified. His behavior demonstrates a lack of team work. He decided he will act however he wants without any regard to what the consequences are for the team.

by littlegeo on Jan 21, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

every championship team is different. this team is nothing like 2 years ago when the pedal was always on the metal. this team is coasting til playoff time. some of the great c’s teams got away with coasting. this one might as well, but my gut tells me different. they look old and brittle. too much dependence on rondo and when not, just a lot of one on one while the others stand around. the big bother to me is rebounding. to rebound, you have to work hard and this team does not put in the extra effort especially off the offensive boards. doc tries to save the old legs with limited practices and then overplays them in the game. sorry doc- you play like you practice. too soft and not enough ain’t doing it.

by nazzbo on Jan 21, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions

I am leaning towards "A lot"

The more I look at the “talent” on this roster, the more convinced I am that they need to make a trade. A package of Ray Allen with BBD and some expiring contracts, for someone very productive where the trading team buys out RayRay and he comes back in 30 days. If they can get that trade (assuming they want to compete this year) then they need to take it.

by funkstarrdeluxe on Jan 21, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

Rebuilding time

The big 3 are well past their prime. The Celtics need to move on after this season and part ways with them. This team is too old, slow and injury prone to win the East let alone another title. Start rebuilding now and dont repeat the mistakes of the late 80’s.

by mdowell04 on Jan 21, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions

I'm not that worried

I voted for “a little” But I don’t think it’s just a matter of getting KG back (although his intensity will help a lot).

I think are older stars will turn it up come playoff time.
Assuming they’re all healthy, I expect a deep run.
