J.R. Giddens Assigned to Maine Red Claws
The Celtics announced this afternoon that they've assigned second-year small forward J.R. Giddens to the Maine Red Claws of the NBA develeopment League.
The 6'5'' Giddens has appeared in 21 games for the C's this season, including one start, and is averaging 4.7 minutes and 1.1 points a night.
An interesting move, considering Giddens has received more playing time than Bill Walker for the majority of the season, yet Walker played over Giddens against the Pistons last night.

So is that the prize for winning the team's dunk contest?
When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"
thought it was odd to see walker get some time last night
but unfortunately it wasn’t very long. didn’t do anything remarkable in what, a couple of minutes.
another odd thing
why would they send down a player that they’re not keeping next year?
sounds like Walker might have simply (finally) passed him on the depth chart – sometimes we make these things more complex than they need be
doesn’t matter much though, I’m pretty sure Doc isn’t all that worried about who sits at the end of the bench vs. the 2nd to last seat on the bench (or Maine I guess)

I honenstly think this is absolutely irrelevant
with all respect and admiration for the job of following the rooks.
I am really more worried on the other 12 players.
not to be a debbie downer
and I dont consder Walker neither as a rotation player not even now
Yeah
By no means is it vital news to the team, but it’s news nonetheless that could be of interest to some readers.
I have forgotten…isn’t there a maximum # of times a player can be sent down? And then what…do they have to release his contract? Keep him with the main club? What?
A player can be sent down a maximum of three times
After that he usually just stays with his NBA team.
it is sad that jakarbo and austin daye contribute more as rookies than giddens and walker do...i wish
boston would cut them both loose

they contribute more out of necessity…Boston has more talent than Detroit. so the young guys don’t get the burn unless they are really good (e.g. Rondo)…Giddens and Walker are more raw. playing time would definitely benefit their progress, but are you gonna play them over others higher on the depth chart? no
Detroit can afford to have their young guys make mistakes and learn and grow. the highest expectation they have is to be an 8th seed, 1st round exit. Boston is trying to win a championship.
You also don’t ususally have the luxury of scoring a high, very talented draft pick when you’re competing for a title.

Walker's just back...
to his pre-injury spot on the depth chart. And, like last season, I expect him to see spot minutes at the 3 until Daniels gets back. He looked good last night in his 3 minutes of action.
If everyone stays healthy, Giddens may never been get back in Green again.

looking to increase his trade value
if he goes up to maine and puts up 45 in a game, will someone trade for him? more likely than if he’s sitting on the bench in boston.
JR Giddens = Not an NBA player
He has yet to show that he deserves to be in this league, period. He is clueless out there. He is unable to relax when he’s on the court. He makes poor decisions with the ball. He rushes shots, or doesn’t take one when he should.
When the Celtics selected him with the last pick in the draft, they were expecting instant production (hence, the lack of moves that offseason). Turns out, he was not only not ready, he just isn’t NBA caliber to begin with.
Looking back, there were much better, and readier options that were taken in the 2nd round iin that draft that have contributed enormously more to their teams, than has Giddens.

Wasted pick
Anybody familiar with Giddens knew this was a horrible pick. He will be lucky to be playing in Turkey a year from now.
Both men can and will end up playing in the NBA. I have never seen so many uninformed Celtic fans. You take the position these young men cant play, but not once have you seen either one of them play just 10 minutes a game. not good enough! How wood you know if you only saw them play 180 seconds. Are you that good at judging talent that in 180 seconds you can pass judgment. You do not have a clue as to what you are talking about.
Exactly! Just look at Pruitt!
Doc had a great young talent in Pruitt, but he never gave him any playing time. So what happens? We cut him, he gets signed by another team, now he’s tearing the league up! Wait a minute… oh yeah, turns out Doc was right and Pruitt passed on into NBA oblivion.

The coaches
get to see Giddens play all the time. Clearly they’re not high on him. Don’t give us that “we haven’t seen them play 180 seconds” when you haven’t either but are so over the coaching staff that Giddens could contribute.
Not that I have too much faith in jr
But for perpective sake, gerald Wallace sat at the end of the kings bench before being given a chance, so did Reggie Lewis and Perk by the way, just to name a few
most teams have room in rotations to garner more pt. These boys r stuck behind a deep vet bench playing for a coach who doesn’t trust anyone who has not yet earned it by years in the league

Doc may as well put Walker in.
It’s not like the guys currently on the bench rotation are tearing it up.
tyquinton comments are right on
I beleive that you guys who are p_ssing and moaning about getting rid of Giddens & Walker have never seen 3 games via NBDL streaming?
You would have seen a couple a young players that have produced at that level.
Giddens PPG 23.0 Walker 18.9 {last year}.
Take a gander at some of the another talents in the NBDL and they aren’t posting any bigger numbers. Take Alexis Ajinca the 7’ who is only averaging 12PPG. He was drafted higher thn both Walker & Giddens. He was the 20th pick in the 2008 draft by the Bobcats.
As I’ve said a number of times be patient!!!!
