Ray Wants To Stay
Some very classy, well thought out quotes from Ray Allen in the Herald today (would you expect any less from him?).
Allen should be a simple re-signing for the Celtics. He wants to return, will play for a contract worth far less than the one he has now, and will embrace a reduced role if asked.
"Have you ever known me to worry about being in the game or playing less minutes?" he said. "I've always said I would love to see Tony Allen play more. I would love to see Marquis (Daniels) in there playing more minutes. It means a great deal to this team.
"At this point, what I'm making now, I made a great living throughout my career," he said. "I know going into next year I won't make the money I'm making now. I know that.
"I'm ready to be here. I'd love to retire with this organization. That's up to the team, but I want to be here. This team has proven over decades to be a winner in sports. I'm committed to it, and that's what I would like to do."
So to recap, he's fine playing more minutes or less in whatever role you want him to play. He's willing to take a paycut and he loves the area and the team. What more could you ask?
By the way, for those of you on twitter, I thought I'd start a new hashtag: #donttraderay. Enjoy.

Ray should stay.
They say a basketball player’s shot is the last thing to leave, and that’s mainly what we need Ray for. So, I’m perfectly fine with him coming back for another 2-3 years at a reduced salary.
Besides, who else would you rather have taking the last shot? Or shooting crucial free throws late in the game?
I specializes in grammar fail.
if it makes us better long term
if it makes us better long term then Ray has to go. Ainge said that the old big three should have been traded to prevent us from becoming mediocre for the next 20 years. I think he will trade Ray and hope to re-sign him if he gets cut loose or next year. Love Ray – would like him to retire as a Celtic but we need to get better. Mediocrity is already starting to show up on this team. The future of this team Rondo and Perk need some players around them.
Surprise surprise, FA says the right thing
The difference between Ray and many NBA players in this case is that he’s smart enough to say it himself without his agent telling him to say it.
If you were a declining player at the tail end of his career and didn’t want to move your family out of New England, where you went to college, etc… what would you do? You’d go out of your way to say all of the right things so that the fans are on your side, and if it didn’t work out for financial reasons then you could easily pit the fans against management.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Ray wouldn’t complain about a reduced role, but my concern is that Doc would keep playing him big minutes to the detriment of the team the next few years.
His quotes are generic and hardly news. I like the guy a lot, am happy he’s on the team, would like to see him back in a Celtic uniform, but I am generally concerned about this team in two years (and possibly even next year). If there is a real chance at acquiring a talented young player with Ray’s contract then I think it has to be done.
As expected
I absolutely expected this from Ray. Exactly this. He’s a high character guy, no doubt. And he knows reality.
It’s not impossible for the Cs to trade Ray. But it will NOT be for the likes of Monta Ellis, for sure. Cs want to win this year. They can’t win without chemistry, both on the court and in the locker room. If they trade Ray, BOTH will be disrupted, and may not recover in time. This team has bonded. If Ray is traded, how do you think KG, Paul, Rondo and even Perk are gonna feel about it? Not good. And court chemistry would be shot until the new guy, whoever it is, learns to fit in. Cs don’t have time for this.
So while it’s possible Ray will be traded, it would only be for a high-character, high-value guy that the team already knows and likes. A Godfather deal (that can’t be refused). So far, I haven’t heard of one.
i dont want to see ray traded.. i want us to keep him AND to get new young talent :P
but if he is traded it should be for a similar player.. how about Rip Hamilton?
Then the year after we trade PP for Joe Johnson?
And we just keep winning championships..
I dont know, a big part of me wants to believe we dont need to trade these guys!
The only reason
it won’t be for Monta Ellis is if GS laughs us off of the phone. DA would have to be clinically insane not to do that deal. Chemistry might take a hit for a short while but, that will be remedied by Monta’s superior skills and lots of winning.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
Nice point DRJ1
I also worry about how the chemistry of the team would be effected if Ray is traded.
This is something we I think do not think about alot when we talk about trading Ray.
KG, Perk, Pierce Rondo have created a great bond as you say and I hate to think that would be disrupted.
I am sure if Ainge ever contemplates trading Allen he will notify the rest of the starters out of respect to them and get feedback (maybe consent) from them before pulling any trigger on a trade.
I agree also Ainge should not trade Allen (and take the chance to disrupt team chemistry) unless its for a highly talented player, which he should be able to find using Allens almost 19 million expiring contract as trade bait.
Agreed.
If they want to win THIS year, they would only trade Ray for someone who makes the team better THIS year. Not for the future.
The only way they trade Ray for some young project is if something happens to cause them to give up on THIS season (like Rondo getting hurt or something like that).
Classy statements fro a classy man
Trading Ray would be sad since he helped us win banner 17.
Since though he is struggling this year with cold shooting streaks, is not a great defender he is expendable.
If Danny finds a great deal that lets say makes us younger, more talented and maybe can put us over the top of winning banner #18 by trading Ray, then he has to make the deal for the good of the team.
I think even Ray if he knew he was helping the team possibly win another title by being moved would deep down want that for the rest of his teammates.
Also if he wants to end his career as a Celtic, keep in mind the team he is traded to will probably not resign him next year (since they want to use his salary) so if Ray is willing to take a serious pay cut and take a role coming off the bench in place of House (wow what a upgrade that would be) maybe he can resign with the C’s next year.
There's only really 2 options
Either keep Ray and resign him to a very reasonable contract next year knowing that you don’t have to use the MLE to resign him if he’s OUR FA and that any SG on the market that could replace his level of play would require more than the MLE to sign them.
The other option is to trade him now to bring in at least an SG that’s a quality starter and some more bench help or get a very good SG on a less-than-ideal contract. The SG would have to be younger with plenty of productive years ahead of them. If Ray’s is traded, I believe we can’t sign him without using the MLE which may be too little and leave us with only the vet min to sign the rest of the bench.
There are other options to deal with the SG spot going forward but none of them would improve the team. As mentioned, there are no FA’s at Ray’s level that will sign for the $ Danny has available (and keep in mind that same $ will be needed to fill in the multitude of roster spots that will become available after this year unless Danny decides to resign everyone which is hopefully NOT the gameplan) and it’s very unlikely Danny will get a starting quality SG in the draft this year (unless he pulls a grandmaster move up the draft) and we don’t have a really good replacement for Ray already on the roster that could be promoted to a starter.
Personally, I like the idea of Ray coming off the bench as a 6th/7th man the next couple of years but we’d need a good player to start instead of him.
A lessa-than-ideal contract
I think that Danny Ainge will choose not to acquire any player who has a truly bad contract unless he’s getting something like a good draft pick to compensate.
Ray said the same thing awhile back...
… and Doc agreed:
Doc Rivers worries about only one thing regarding his veteran starting guard: how to keep Allen in Boston beyond this season.
"He is still a terrific player," Rivers said. "I think he’ll get better as the season goes along, as he always does. I really anticipate us finding a way to keep him. Listen, we do not want to break this up. If we do what we want to do and win it, we’ll find a way to keep him. I honestly believe that."
"You have a core," Rivers said. "You keep that core as long as you can keep it."

You can't fall in love with your players
The job of the coach and the fans is to look out for the short term present. The job of the front office is to look out for both the present and the future. Look at the Sox and Theo. He traded Nomar in 04 knowing what a HUGE disruption it would bring short term but would also bring long term benefits. Ray isn’t a whining, self-absorbed A-hole like Nomar was and that makes the prospect of trading Ray all the more unsettling.
Danny knows what’s at stake concerning the overall age of the team. He knows that this year is likely the last chance to win with the current Big 3. Next year would be like watching the decline of the old Big 3 – constant injuries, sub-par play over the course of the season and immense frustration.
While we all love Ray, NOW is the time to trade him and get someone of high value and YOUNGER. We’d have half the season to integrate anyone new into the system. KG and PP are both pros and would NOT allow this scenario to be a distraction because they want #18 as much as we do. Home court is not as critical with this team so sacrificing a few wins is not an issue.
If Ray really, really wants to retire a Celtic then he can play out the rest of the year elsewhere and then re-sign after the season. Unless, of course, it’s all about the $$$, in which case trading him was really and truly the best for the team.
I have yet...
to see a fair and reasonable trade idea/rumor that would justify sending Ray out of town.
If we get blow away with a sweetheart deal, great. If we make a deal where the other team buys Ray out and he comes back to us, great. I just don’t see it happening.
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" Henry V
So Monta Ellis rumor is unfounded?
Or are you seriously saying that’s not a fair trade?

The ball is in Danny's court
I respect Ray for coming out and articulating to the fans what his feeling are, a true class act, A.K.A. Ray Allen.
That being said, words and phrases such as reduced, less, not as much, home town discount, are all subjective to each individual who hears them.
What is less?
Less money for the C’s than the Lakers, Cavs…
50%, 40%, 35% less than he is making now?
Every team needs shooters and solid veteran leadership, Ray has that. Every team also needs younger talent to continue the quest for future championships while not forgetting about the most important championship, the next one. Danny needs to project the fine line of decline verses the fine line of trying to hit a home run if he decides to deal Ray. It is Danny’s call.
who doesn’t care about ray? he’s the epitome of a class guy and a classic nba shooting guard. that being said, he’s expendable but only for the right player. ellis has a lot of upside, too much for gs to trade, methinks. my guess is ray stays. the time for anything to happen however is now to give the team the time to adjust to someone new.
Ray = Class
I’ll say this about Danny Ainge, he will not alter the starting 5 as long as he thinks he can win a championship. It’s all about championships now and not preparing yourself for the future. Therefore everyone, stop dreaming these unrealistic and ridiculous trade ideas.
I also believe Ray will retire a Celtic and have a great career once his playing days are over as a Celtic Ambassador/PR person.
Trade-aholics
Once again I ask. Is there a way to trade the “trade-alohoics”??? It must be sad to watch basketball and only see expiring contracts, potential buyouts and multi-player deals making driving layups, working their way through screens and hitting back breaking 3s.
I really used to enjoy coming to the Celtics Blog to read the interviews, discussions and links that made being a CELTICS fan that much more enhanced. (I would’ve flipped if we had this during the original Big 3 Era!!!)
But unfortunately, something along the way has given way to an endless cacophony of handwringing, droning talkbacks of who to trade when a player doesn’t have a perfect game. Blame it on the instant gratification generation? Who knows…All I know is that every game is over analyzed to death and any perspective of an 82 game season is thrown out the window.
This is a long season and this team has yet to play 1 single, solitary game together as a fully healthy squad. Think about that for a minute. Anyone who would want to trade Ray Allen mid-way through a season that hasn’t played to it’s full potential is out to lunch.
Peace Out CB…

That is so freakin' funny!
I think Doc would be a blast to have a few drinks with. He has no qualms about saying something funny – especially when its true.
I wish he were 30
But he isn’t.
If he is traded, I would be willing to have him back on a two or three year deal at the MLE, similar to the deal that Sheed has. That would mean bye bye Marquis Daniels, lest we forget.
If he is not traded the C’s have bird rights and could pay him more. I’m sure he’d like the deal that Steve Nash got (2 year extension at 11 mil per year) but he’s not going to get it.
The unsentimental, unvarnished fact is that Ray’s expiring deal is the only way the Celtics have to bring in a younger impact player.
At what price? The C's need Ray's expiring contract just as much as any other team.
If we replace Ray’s expiring deal for a younger player’s deal who is making comparable money then we are screwing ourselves for when Perk, Pierce need to be resigned after next year. Which is not even to mention that we will have to sign some backup wings (TA, Daniels, House all expiring too).
Letting Ray’s salary come off the books this year is as helpful as signing a young stud who is well paid. Because this team doesn’t need another stud – we need solid role players (albeit younger ones) who can take over the reins. If we resign Ray cheaply, we can then afford to pick up a solid role player to step in.

There are so many people in here who don't understand (over the last few days I have seen that)
RESPECT, TRADITION, HONOR LOYALTY……many in here are cursed by youth, impatience and maybe just don’t understand such words??? I don’t know.
While the NBA is a business, a business can actually be infused with RESPECT, LOYALTY, TRADITION AND HONOR which in turns sustains an organization through tough times.
Ray can provide a stability to this team over the next 5 or so years just by merely being Ray Allen. He leads the way in how young players should conduct themselves both on and off the court. You can’t put a price tag on that. Never underestimate what RESPECT, TRADITION AND HONOR BRINGS TO A TEAM …I hope danny Ainge knows that.
By resigning Ray you send a message to players across this NBA league that this is a team that TRULY values HONOR, TRADITION, LOYALTY and thus RESPECTS and Values its’ PLAYERS who demostrate those same charateristics. This is how you attract other players to this team!!!!
This isn’t fantasy league, it’s the Celtics…..Ray Allen is the kind of guy I pay money to see and would want my kids to watch (if I had any who liked basketball)
Peace
Is it Soup Yet?
I respect....YOUR respect for the "traditional values" you have outlined
However…too many factors are working against Ray {despite how classy he is} :
1} His idea of what a reasonable salary should be for next year is likely to be far different than what DA has in mind. When you`re making $20M, you might feel that a discount of 50% is a sign of great generosity on your part. DA won`t be interested in paying him $10M, and would prefer an 85% discount {$3M}.
2} Ray came to Boston very late in his career. Losing Ray is not like losing PP {a career Celtic who endured nine brutal years here, in silent dignity, before winning a title}.
3} Much has been written about how the Celts chose not to trade away the original Big 3 {except Parish at age 40} . Clearly, by doing so, the Celts displayed RESPECT, LOYALTY, TRADITION, HONOR.
But, exactly what did the Celtics get in return for for displaying all those “virtues”?
Two decades of misery!
Bird [Indiana}, McHale {Minn.}, Parish did NOT even remain in the Celtic “family”!
4} Love him or hate him, DA is a cold-blooded assassin. If ANY part of him feels that Ray`s primary value is that of an expiring contract {which I strongly suspect is the case}….DA will pull the trigger on a trade without a second thought!
Ummm...
Two, decades of misery…umm probably had more to do with Lenny Bias and Reggie Lewis both DYING!!!
Between 1993 thru 2006....
How many top, talented free agents did you hear say….?
“I only want to play for Boston, due to the respect and loyalty they showed to Bird, McHale, Parish, and DJ!”
Let's not blame our two decades of misery on not trading the Big 3...
I think miserable ownership, terrible GM decisions, and untimely deaths had a lot more to do with it.
You think DA can’t do a better job at drafting high (and keeping the good players) than Chris Wallace? You wouldn’t have cringed to see Bird or McHale traded to the Knicks or something? Loyalty and legacy are what make the Celtics different than almost any other team.
by milt palacio's shot on Jan 27, 2010 2:42 PM EST up reply actions
Danny is also smart enough...
… to know that there are currently no “building block” type of players on the market available for Ray’s contract. Just about any deal we make would weaken our chances at a title this season, in return for a longer “future”. However, since there really isn’t a franchise-type player on the market, I’d rather stick with the known quantity.

Except if the Monta Ellis trade has legs
Then it’s a no brainer.

disagree
I don’t think replacing Allen with Ellis makes this team stronger this year at all.
I believe you are seriously underestimating just how important Allen’s play is to this team.
Agreed
1. I don’t think Monta Ellis improves this team’s ability to win a championship. Despite his scoring ability, he very well could adversely affect the offense, as our spacing would be thrown out of whack.
2. Monta Ellis isn’t the type of player you want to build around, especially next to Rondo. He may be an okay complementary piece, but he’s not a superstar.
All the negativity in this town sucks. It sucks, and it stinks, and it sucks. - Rick Pitino
No I'm a big fan of Rays
I just see the writing on the wall and would rather have Ellis/Rondo back court. The defense alone would take a major leap forward.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
disagree strongly
I don’t believe that an Ellis/Rondo back court would be an improvement on defense over Ray & Rondo.
1) It would be a relatively short back court. While fast and athletic, Ellis gives up 2 inches from Ray.
2) Ellis biggest knock has been and continues to be inability to play team basketball, not only on offense, but also on defense. The Celtics play team defense that does NOT rely on flashy man-on-man skills.
3) Allen is the consummate team player and has become an excellent team defender on the Celtics. Evidence? Induction – Allen has played 75% of his possible floor minutes this year (more than any other Celtic). The Celtics have been in the top 3 in defense all year and last I checked were second by a hair (93.7 ppg) behind the Bobcats (93.4 ppg). While Ray is on the floor, the opposition only scores 1.03 pts per possession.
4) In case you were wondering, Ellis has played the most minutes of any Warrior (84%). The Warriors are dead last in defense at 110.8 ppg. While Ellis is on the floor, the opposition scores 1.10 pts per possession. That is a huge difference. Yes, you can probably blame a lot of that on lousy teammates or a lousy coaching scheme or whatever. But Ellis deserves a big chunk of the blame himself.
I see zero evidence that replacing Ray Allen with Monta Ellis would do anything but make this team worse.
Master Po
Not being disrespectful here, but under what conditions would you trade Ray.
I can't speak for Po
But as I’ve said before, I would trade Ray in a heartbeat under the following two conditions:
1) If a trade was available that clearly, without question made the team stronger to win THIS YEAR than keeping Ray on the team. I have seen absolutely no evidence such is out there.
2) If something happens that causes us to tank the season (ex: Rondo gets injured). In that case I would trade Ray for youth with an eye toward the future.
Since I don’t see any evidence for (1), until this team really tanks it, I expect to see Ray play out the season.
Keep Ray but do it in a smart way
I Love Ray as a player and I do believe he fits the Reggie Miller type of player (a player who can play into his late 30’s) and still be effective.
However I do believe you have to look at what trades are out there for him and pull the trigger if its a good deal. There are few players that I would trade him for (Martin, Gay, and Butler are 3 that come to mind).
If we do end up trading him I think it would be completely possible to get him back at the end of the year at a 2 year MLE deal and he would be a great 6th man off the bench at the end of the game or hitting key free throws.
I think this team can be better next year if Ray takes less money. That way we can maybe get a guy like Gay away from the Griz and then bridge the gap and nto go into another rebuilding mode for years to come.
Ray Ray
Needs to retire a Celtic, no questions asked.
ray allen
Ray Allens shooting woes are more to do with the rest of the big three being injured, than his poor shooting. With Pierce and KG being injured, they are keying on Ray because no one else can shoot the three, which is the shoot that really kills the other team. Trading Allen now would be a big mistake, he is a 90 percent free throw shooter, and he is the only one who has not missed a game because of injury. He is willing to take a large cut in pay, so we can keep him, and still get a good young player, with the remaining money, especially if we get rid of some of the other players who are not producing. We could do a lot worse than Ray Allen, We could get one of the many malcontents that are in the NBA, and disrupt the whole team chemistry. Let him finish his career here, he reminds me of Hondo, and Russell, who played great until they were almost 40, and won 4 championships after 35, he has that kind of energy.
The funny thing about Ray's "shooting woes" is that
his FG% (about 45.6%) is actually slightly UP over his career average (though admittedly down from last year, when he tied his career best at 48.7%). He has slumped the last few games, but the rest of the season he’s been our rock.
He is down for the year on his 3 pt , from almost 40 to 34% → but the latter number is hardly ‘horrible’ and will likely go up when he gets into a hot streak.
I really don’t expect us to find anything available that gives us a better chance at winning this year than to just keep Ray all the way.
i would trade Ray for a Rajon Rondo/Monta Ellis backcourt
we all love ray but that is undeniably better
yeah i will go ahead and deny that too
that’s a 5 year experiment with guards who are 6-1 and 6-3 in your starting line up. What if they can’t co-exist well on offense? What if they give up too many inches to the Joe Johnsons of the league?
Monta Ellis is a great player, but you can’t force a trade to fit. What Ray brings to the team in professionalism, attitude, spacing, clutch shooting will be difficult to replace. Let’s just overpay for it for the rest of the season and bring him back at a big discount.
by milt palacio's shot on Jan 27, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions
No doubt
bye bye Ray you aren’t Pierce you can be moved.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
Yes, he certainly can. And should be, for the right move.
Monta Ellis is not the right move.
Question
Ok I hear a lot of the trade with Monta Ellis,it’s possible to trrade Ray and they buyout so they save more money or GS want to keep him the hole year.
No way
Monta Ellis can score, whoop-d-do. What else can he do? Not much from my observations. Only way trading Ray would help is if it gets us a young player who fits our system, and the team we’re trading Ray to agrees to buy out his contract. No buy out, no deal. It’s really that simple.
Don't re-sign Ray Allen
Ray is a true team player but the C’s have too many players 33+yrs old. If Ray could play some great D I would say O.K. re-sign him but he’s a liability on defense. Spend the money on younger legs.
by Celtics9Lakers2 on Jan 28, 2010 5:03 AM EST reply actions
Can you back up the 'liability on defense' statement
with anything more concrete than your opinion?
Ray has put in more minutes on the floor than any other Celtic (75% of possible minutes). If he is such a defensive liability, then why have the Celtics been consistently all season one of the top 2 defensive teams in the NBA? They are in a virtual tie with the Bobcats right now, just a hair behind their 93.4 ppg with 93.7 ppg.
This suggests strongly that your statement is completely without basis.
Trade with an "understanding"
Like DSF767 said, get something good back, but also get Ray back. If you send Ray and as much cash as can be allowed so the team he is traded to can buy him out at full price, then the Celtics could sign him back for the rest of the year. This would have to be done with Ray’s ok. Then Ray could come back next year for the MLE ($5+ million). If someone like the Wizards wants to cut payroll, that is a great way to cut $20+ million per year.
Who are good players that could be available in a scenario like that? (Hopefully a better fit than Monta Ellis)
