Celtics Sneak By Raptors

In their second straight down-to-the-wire game, the Boston Celtics inched past the Toronto Raptors, 91-87.

A slew of bench players contributed down the stretch to help Boston overcome a stubborn group of Raptors. Stephane Lasme threw down a highlight-worthy dunk with 2:50 remaining, putting Boston up 85-84. Nate Robinson added a three-pointer (with the help of a kind bounce off the rim) with 2:23 to play, making it 88-84, Boston. Von Wafer added three free throws over the final 1:23 and Delonte West rejected a Jarrett Jack jump shot with 45 ticks left, securing the victory for the Celtics, who move to 3-0 in preseason action.

Other Thoughts

  • The 15th roster spot still appears to be up for grabs, and it's worth noting that Lasme and Wafer found the court tonight while Mario West remained on the bench.
  • Lasme (two points, one rebound, one assist) played the final 9:34 of the fourth quarter (the first of the 15th spot hopefuls to check in), while Wafer (three points) played the final 4:11.
  • The bench closed out the game for a second straight time, allowing the likes of West, Robinson, and Semih Erden to play out some late game scenarios with each other.
  • Shaquille O'Neal started at center once again, but Jermaine O'Neal saw his first action off the bench, playing eight minutes while grabbing two rebounds and blocking three shots. Two of his more impressive blocks came against Amir Johnson late in the first quarter. On both occasions he rotated over to provide help defense and swatted away Johnson's shot attempts emphatically.
  • Shaq looked crisp once again as he registered perhaps his most productive game of the preseason: 11 points (4-6 shooting), five rebounds, and two blocks. He worked well with Rajon Rondo, who really emphasized the lob pass tonight. Shaq converted two lob passes from Rondo, and another from Ray Allen. The second of Rondo's was a high arching underhand pass that Shaq caught in mid-air and threw down, proving he still has some hops in those old legs of his.

Star-divide

  • All of Rondo's eight points came on jump shots at least 14 feet away from the rim. He added seven assists for good measure.
  • Marquis Daniels put forth a strong effort for the second straight night: 11 points and three rebounds in 21 minutes. He scored nine of Boston's first 11 points of the fourth quarter. He worked well with Semih Erden tonight, as Erden fed him two slick passes while he was cutting to the basket.
  • Luke Harangody struggled from the field once again, missing all three of his attempts at the basket. His 0-3 night brings his preseason shooting percentage to a mere 15.3 percent (2-13). On the plus side, he did pull down five rebounds. As a team, the Celtics grabbed 41 rebounds to the Raptors' 35.
  • One glaring weakness for the Celtics tonight: 22 turnovers. Rondo accounted for five of them, while Erden committed four of his own.

Good to see the bench close out the game.

Semih is nice. His dishes to Quis were nice. A keeper imo. On the other hand…Luke isn’t doing himself any favors with those rushed shots he’s taking. Three games into preseason I don’t see him getting any more comfortable. How about that throw down by Lasme? Me gusta!

Wafer looked somewhat more alive than on previous nights. At least he got to the foul line.

Meanwhile, Lasme’s drive and dunk was nice, but he’d have been smarter not to have taken that one shot out at the three point arc. It looked rather brutal.

rondo looking good on his jumpers, but made too many sloppy, laissez-faire passes. jermaine was a defensive terror. they will really miss delonte the first 10 games. he is so much under control and actually looks better than rondo. quissy playing good, but looks like another free throw head case. shaq is going to be in for short times. looked slow on , gving up too many drives to the hoop. semih is still shining. at least, luke got some boards.

I think they might keep Lasme as long as he doesn’t take another shot from far out..

Stephane Lasme is a better player than Luke Harangody

Quicker, more active and more aggressive. If Lasme does not make this team, Harangody should also get cut. Luke has not looked good in any of these games.

by vinnie on Oct 10, 2010 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

I agree that Harangody hasn't looked very good at all

But he has a 2-year guaranteed deal, which means he’s most likely staying around. Apparently Doc just said in his postgame press conference that Lasme has a great shot of making the team.

by Greg Payne on Oct 10, 2010 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

    Yea Harangody has really struggled...

I wonder if its still rookie jitters??

Glad to hear Doc say Lasme has a great shot to make the club.

Since Doc has also said Lasme can play the small forward position it would be nice to have him on the roster to help beef up probably the weakest roster position the C’s have which is the small forward position.

Though not known for his one on one defense abilities I would not mind having Lasme length, strength and athleticism to throw on the likes of Kobe and Lebron as he could possibly give them some trouble defensively.

by fordescort on Oct 10, 2010 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

    huh?

I’m not sure what Lasme is known for, if not for his defensive abilities. After all, for what it was worth, he was a D-League Defensive Player of the Year.

by no kidding on Oct 10, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree he is not a great defender...

as I posted he is not known for his one on one defense (because he is not that great) but I would still not mind Lasme used against Kobe or Lebron defensively because I assume Lasme’s length, strength and athletic ability could cause them some trouble.

Considering after Pierce we just have Daniels… Lasme could be a player Doc could call on for spot duty to help back up Pierce especially against strong, athletic and long wing players again like Kobe, Lebron etc..

by fordescort on Oct 10, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Meant to say in my 1st sentence above ...

I agree he is not a great “1 on 1 wing defender” due to his size.

His in the paint low post team defense of course when he plays the 4 position is pretty good.

by fordescort on Oct 10, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, at this point, since Ainge has attended to so many other issues...

… one of the bigger remaining desires would be to have a guy off the bench for spot duty “against strong, athletic and long wing players again like Kobe, Lebron, etc.”

And yes, perhaps that can be Lasme.

Shaq looked anything but fluid. He missed easy shots, couldn’t do much in isolation plays, and didn’t seem to be able to get more than 5 inches off the ground.

Maybe if he was as committed as KG to keeping himself in shape, he would have been good for starting and playing 25 minutes, but right now, he’s shouldn’t be in for more than 20 per night, preferably against second-stringers.

Really, the only position he can probably start is nose tackle, or something.

by kozlodoev on Oct 10, 2010 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

but 20 minutes is all you need from Shaq

Jermaine looked good for a first gaem and Erden is a decent third string. Perk will be back after the ASG.

by Surferdad on Oct 10, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

    Um ... 5 inches?

I agree that Shaq looked at times like he had no rhythm. He seems to rush his layups and that’s causing the missed easy shots that should be automatics. It’s preseason, though, so I’m not too worried about that.

But really, “didn’t seem to be able to get more than 5 inches off the ground.” ???

He’s misses some easy layups, but he’s also made half a dozen dunks already in these first 3 games including a pretty high throw-down tonight on that huge lob from Rondo. ’Definitely looked to be a fair bit higher than 5 inches off the ground on that one.

    Methinks y’all be exaggerating a bit …

by mmmmm on Oct 11, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Half a dozen of dunks? He’s barely scored a dozen of baskets in three games, and most of them were layups.

And yes, 5 inches. You think it’s normal for someone 7’1 not to be able to dunk the ball jumping off of two feet right under the basket? The guy is a plodding caricature of himself, and should have either kept himself in better playing shape, or retired this off-season.

He’s still 7’1 and he’s Shaq, but at a stage at which he can’t play defense and can’t make his free throws, you have to consider long and hard in what situations to use him.

by kozlodoev on Oct 11, 2010 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

    shaq so far this preseason

Has shot 12 of 17 from the field and yes, most of his attempts have been layups – all 5 misses were. About half his made shots also were layups. About half his made shots were dunks. That’s not saying much – he’s made one or two dunks and one or two layups each game.

As for whether he can dunk the ball from jumping off of two feet right under the basket, I guess you missed this shot:

Click on the ‘Shaq Thrown Down’ video.

Again – it seems you are being a bit pessimistic about Mr. O’Neal’s vertical leap.

And then, of course, you move the argument to other topics.

As to whether he ‘should have … kept himself in better playing shap’, well, most reports I have heard tell me that Shaq IS in great playing shape. Jackie McMullin, who most folks think of as one of the very few serious, technically astute basketball reporters, raved about how fit Shaq is just last week on CSN. She also recently penned this column:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nba/columns/story?columnist=macmullan_jackie&id=5620537

in which you’ll find the following quote:

Here’s what the Celtics have learned about O’Neal. He is trim, focused and hungry to begin.

Looking at him play, the eye test doesn’t show me anything to suggest he isn’t playing at a high level the whole time he’s on the floor so far. He doesn’t look to be out of shape – he looks as ‘trim’ as he has in years. The eye can be deceiving, of course.

As to whether he ’can’t play defense’ – well he certainly doesn’t play man-to-man perimeter defense on any point guards and he’s not going to be able to keep up with the faster guards coming around on the pick & roll. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t play defense. His very presence in the post is shot-altering and to suggest otherwise is, well, not supported by the facts. Last year, playing with Cleveland, he posted a very respectable defensive rating of 102 pts per 100 possessions. He also blocked 1 of every 25 shots taken by his opponents while on the floor. Just last night, one of the earliest highlights of the game started where Shaq’s defense in the post caused Bargnani to deviate to try to go around him, exposing his dribble to KG, who snagged it and started a transition break, resulting in a KG basket.

The big question about Shaq has always been:

Which Shaq are you going to get? Do you get the out-of-shape version that reported to the Lakers at the end of his run there, or do you get the focused, in-shape version that reported to the Miami Heat the year they won the title?

Given his motivations this year, I think you’ll get the latter. He has reasons to want to beat BOTH the Heat AND the Lakers. You can’t get much more motivated than that, which is why I think he was a good pick-up for the C’s.

He still can’t shoot free throws, but that’s been true not matter WHICH Shaq you get

    Hopefully ...

as you say we will get the motivated Shaq this year.

You hit the nail on the head that Shaq has motivation to beat both the Heat and Lakers…which is good news for the C’s since those 2 teams are probably the C’s biggest opponents standing in the way of banner 18.

To me, he’s a 5. Maybe against some of the less mobile 4s, he can do that too. I guess it’ll be situational, but I’m almost certain that he’ll get the vast majority of his minutes at the 5.

Agreed, he seemed to have bulked up as well for the 5 position.

by Grared Tailgate on Oct 10, 2010 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. He's going to see most of his time at the 5 until Perk comes back.

He’s actually a very good 4, but the way the rotations look, he’s more valuable to us as a 5, whether starting or off the bench, until Perk comes back.

The only reason to have him at the 4 is if KG or BBD get hurt in which case Erden would take JO’s minutes at 5 and we would shift JO over to PF.

by mmmmm on Oct 11, 2010 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

    Agree mmmmm

Jermaine while Perk is out will probably be more valuable at the 5….but when Perk comes back with him , Shaq and Erden playing at center I think Jermaine at that time will be more valuable to the C’s at the 4 position.

Of course I assume Doc will still use Jermaine for spot duty even then at the 5 especially against quick Athletic centers, but I think most of his minutes will be at the 4 especially come play off time when the game becomes more of a 1/2 court power game and Jermaines length and bulk at the 4 becomes even more valuable.

by fordescort on Oct 11, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Jermaine due to his build is more suited to play the 4....

just because his frame is not very bulky (though he has added some bulk in his latter NBA years).

But he can play the 5 ok as we have seen through the years and does so especially effectively against athletic quick centers….which would give Shaq trouble.

I think when Perk comes back we will see Jermaine getting alot of minutes at the 4 position …I think Doc is really going to enjoy having a power forward with length on the bench to come in against teams with longer power forwards ala the Lakers.

Again the versatility and depth in the front line that Doc will have when Perk gets back along with KG, Shaq, Jermaine, Baby and Erden is just going to be sic and enjoyable to see.

by fordescort on Oct 11, 2010 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

    also

when KG came back he had a minutes limitation for quit awhile so there will still be minutes at center to be had for jermaine.

    Very true....

if Perk is slow to get back in the flow of things if he returns this year Jermaine will continue to see extended minutes at center ..

But if Perk comes back fairly healthy I just think their will be such a log jam at center with Perk, Shaq and Erden that Jermaine will see more minutes at the power forward position in such a scenario.

by fordescort on Oct 11, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

    5 observations

Shaq will do, but until Perk returns but Perk is better as a starter as he offers more weapons

Shaq has a powerful outlet pass

Play West at PG and Nate at SG when they are in together….West is more solid than Nate at PG

Von Wafer…..is a waste of bench space so far……Lamse has real potential. I would rather cut Von Wafer than Harangoody but it won’t happen

Raptors played tough aggressive D and our starting five look a bit rough to me. KG has no more limp that I can see.

    Well, technically so does Wafer.

But I agree, I don’t think Erden or Harangody are getting cut.

Wafer looked better this game than in the first two. But he still needs to get his butt going and show some more if he wants to stick around.

by mmmmm on Oct 11, 2010 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions

So he could get cut and the team doesn't lose a lot of money

So I don’t think it’s for certain that the camp invites (M.West and Lasme) get cut. This is why you have camp invites in the first place.

by Surferdad on Oct 11, 2010 7:47 AM EDT up reply actions

No. The Celtics have cut partially guaranteed contracts before. But they’ve never cut someone they’ve just signed for 2 years.

At this point, I think West is out of contention for the spot, but unless Wafer transforms himself into some sort of steady offensive presence for the rest of the preseason, he might be cut despite his partial guarantees.

    actually

id say lasme, west, wafer in that order. wafer hasnt done anything to show he should be here. he was brought in because he has a great shot. well where is it, he’s taken 1 shot and a few layups.

I haven’t heard people talk about Semih’s passing, he is a stud passer! He still needs to work on his game but he looks solid, and i think He plays very well with Rondo, they can lob him the ball or pick and roll. I know Semih is nowhere near perk in terms of defense but he finishes alot better.
Lasme was funny tonite, i bet him doc told Frank " lets keep watching Stephane, maybe it was one of them retarted mistakes" cause that dunk was scary, but it sealed the win for us, Gody looks kind of bad. I think there is a posibility that Lasme can take his spot(if we can just waive him) Von looks bad too. I would have liked if we got McCants in a contract he is a really good scorer. Ohh yeah almost forgot, Daniels is legit! I can’t believe some of you wanted to overpay Travis Outlaw to be the backup defender ( he got smoked by PP)

Erden probably can’t body up centers the way Perkins did, but he’s surprisingly sound when it comes to defensive fundamentals. I watched him carefully last night: he’s able to help on the strong side, stop the ball, then recover to the open man, and he’s pretty fluid at that. This will earn him minutes this season.

Harangody looked exactly like he did in preseason, except that the shots he was taking then were falling. He’s taking identical shots, too.

by kozlodoev on Oct 11, 2010 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Gody not making shots is useless! we need his shot falling! I think Lasme can help us a lot this year if we kept him.

by businessbmw on Oct 11, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been real impressed with Erden's quick feet and

the way he uses his wing span to take sight lines away now – he wasn’t doing that this summer. That looks like something he picked up from KG (lord and master of all passing lanes).

I agree about Harangody except he looks a bit jittery compared to how he looked in the summer. There is a nervousness to his motion when he’s going into his shot motion. I’m guess it’s just rookie jitters. He’s showing better hustle this last game and the 5 defensive rebounds were great. The shot will eventually come back.

Do you agree that Lasme deserves the 15th spot? Von is not doing well, Mario is pretty much a non factor. We need a big like Steph as insurance for the 7 footers. I think Semih will play a lot this season cause he has a positive effect on both sides of the ball, and he keeps getting better! Don’t want to jinx it but Semih is looking like another 2nd round steal by Danny !

by businessbmw on Oct 12, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

so far, yes, I would agree.

’Still a few games to play. But Lasme is doing everything right at this point.

Wafer looked a lot better these last two games (I’m writing this after the 76ers game), but still has not looked totally comfortable and ‘in the game’.

This team feels different from last year,Im even more excited. We have legit backups 1 through 5!
RONDO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep hitting them mid’s! If Rondo keeps shooting well teams can’t sag off on ’’D’’
and that’s how we win! lol

if rondo hits his shots all season

like he did last night we will be a force to recon with and he will be the best PG in the league

    Eh

I don’t want him taking too many of those, now. : )

by Tai on Oct 11, 2010 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to worry, it's just that in pre-season he's getting the opportunities

In most real games, you will have Pierce, Ray and perhaps Nate on the floor at end of games to taek 3-pointers.

by Surferdad on Oct 11, 2010 7:50 AM EDT up reply actions

yes, his form looks alot better this year

i wonder if doc told him to work on it this offseason. if he can be a some what reliable 3 point shooter it only opens our offense up more. keep it up ’quis

    I just got a bit of word-of-mouth

through RL friends that apparently Daniels spent the summer tossing up literally hundreds and hundreds of 3 pt shots each day.

That’s un-confirmed, but if true that would indicate he’s made a discerned effort to add an outside shot to his game, which would be huge, especially since he is Pierce’s sub and Pierce is one of our two perimeter threats with the starting 5.

Doing it in practice is, of course, one thing. Having taken the two shots and making them in late game situations like that has to boost his confidence to take them in games.

by mmmmm on Oct 11, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

PP became a better 3pt shooter as he got older, so it could happen to Marquis. And i hope it does cause our second unit will be loaded with shooters and good post scorers. Daniels has really good form this year, and if he really did practice that shot, he should only get better. same with Rondo.

by businessbmw on Oct 12, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Daniels was doing it again in tonight's 76ers game.

Tommy made note of it too – and of how valuable that could be if he has the confidence to take that shot.

by mmmmm on Oct 13, 2010 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I liked 2 things, apart from Quis

Ray Allen’s open 3 point shot that turned out to be a brick, and Wafer’s first three point attempt.
Rondo’s getting quite confident with those jumpers, the only time he was open and didn’t shoot was when he was behind the three point line on the left side. But I’m betting he didn’t take it because when he shoots jumpers from there, he always aims at the glass. Can’t shoot a 3pt like that.

    Irresponsible I stand...

rays 3 ball is still dead

i hope he finds it for the regular season and playoffs

Rondo’s getting quite confident with those jumpers

He’s always been quite confident with taking those jumpers, at least since the championship season. The problem is, those haven’t been falling nearly as often enough as they should. So we’ll see how this pans out this year.
