"In the second unit [Von Wafer has] picked up more of the scoring burden," [Ray] Allen said. "We haven't had that scoring punch (off the bench). You have had me and Paul (Pierce), and when he goes to the bench Doc's usually got to keep one of us out there. So (Wafer's presence) is why I believe this team is definitely deeper than years past."

I guess that means Lasme is gone.

I’m surprised Ray didn’t mention Delonte and Nate picking up the scoring burden as well, I thought both of them have shown to be very capable so far.

That's the vibe that I got from reading Ray's and Doc's comments...

… but officially, nothing has been decided yet.

C's could keep Wafer

And cut Lasme, and have Lasme join the Red Claws. Lasme already said he’d accept a contract from them.

That's what I would expect, yep.

That's right!!

We can send 3 guys to that legueand lasme is 1 of them. West has a 10 games suspension and we can use Wafer those games. So he has 10 game to probe himself after that I think is gonna Lasme break.

+1

Agree…as a Lasme supporter if its the only way the C’s can keep him then I will take that scenario.

by fordescort on Oct 20, 2010 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

May have something to do with Delonte being injured most of the time.

by kozlodoev on Oct 20, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

sounds like it.

me and Ray are on the same page with regards to this choice as well for that very reason.

Okay, so that's how Allen feels. How 'bout Pierce? Does he want Wafer as his secondary backup behind Daniels? Cuz I don't want to hear any whining from Pierce if Wafer can't cut it on defense.

Or is Allen figuring he’ll have to back up Pierce just like he did last year?

Secondly, if Delonte’s available, Wafer isn’t going to be in for Allen anyways. He’s going to be sulking on the bench.

by no kidding on Oct 20, 2010 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

Well I think they would

probably be thinking Daniels will be backing up Pierce at this point. The secondary backups won’t be getting much PT, IMO. And I doubt they are going to keep Lasme just in case Daniels gets hurt if they think Wafer is needed.

I hate to keep making the same point, but it can't be any plainer. Daniels is brittle.

Yeah, maybe there’ll never be any need for a Lasme. Maybe Pierce and Daniels will be fine all season long. (Just as some thought Erden would never see playing time, since we have the two O’Neals.)

I just don’t want to come down to Ray Allen again wearing himself and his jumper out by trying to sub for Pierce in the playoffs. Because I’m expecting Doc won’t be trusting Wafer.

Mark my words

if lasme is released he is going to get picked by another team very shortly

by aboubata on Oct 20, 2010 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

that's the risk...

…but let’s face it, Lasme will not decide Banner 18, so it is definitely a risk worth taking IMHO.

by joeb on Oct 20, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you know what won't decide Banner 18?

Championships can be decided by what happens in the closing minutes of game 7. And you don’t get to know ahead of time what could be the difference. Last year, Perkins was taken out by an injury and Rasheed Wallace had to try to carry the load with a bad back. This year it could be whoever’s backing up a foul-plagued Paul Pierce.

by no kidding on Oct 20, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's put it this way

If Lasme so much as has to take his seatbelt off on the bench, he’ll decide Banner 18 alright. We’ll lose.

I understand the fan adoration for the guy. He tries hard. But he is legitimately no better than a 15th guy. And he isn’t a small forward. Wafer at least has a history in the league, spotty as it is.

So really, who cares if Lasme get’s picked up. I don’t see him as a contributor on any team.

Two words for you guys...Leon Powe

He also tried hard. And everybody remembers his decisive Game 2 against the Lakers in the 2008 Finals.

haha. i wish i read your response before posting mine.

you said what i was trying to say, but you said it a lot better

by Cousin It on Oct 20, 2010 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I see your point.

Lasme has had some opportunities to prove himself in the NBA and, for one reason or another, hasn’t become a solid rotation player. And there are always guys who shine in preseason and win over fans, then fade away. Lasme could be one of those guys.

But I also can’t help feeling like No Kidding is right. Lasme is playing great D, and during a deep playoff run, with an older team, that type of guy playing just 5-10 minutes a night could make the marginal difference between being 4 minutes away from a championship and actually winning a championship.

In general, I guess I just feel like they can use another defender more than another scorer—but Ray Allen seems to feel the opposite way, so I will definitely defer to him on that!

by Cousin It on Oct 20, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course...

A guy who comes in while your team is struggling and hits two quick threes can be the difference between winning and losing, as well. We saw that with Eddie House, and with Nate a bit. Wafer is a similar player, except he also drives to the basket and gets the other team in foul trouble.

"He still has to buy in defensively and into our culture"

Am I the only one scared by a quote like this?

Only good side – it sounds like it took a good couple months for the light to click for Nate, maybe it will for Von as well.

by theBird on Oct 20, 2010 5:55 PM EDT reply actions

Hasn't Daniels been our best scorer?

He’s proved he can score from anywhere in any manner. We don’t need a player who may or may not be good, depending on his mood.

Irresponsible I stand...

Keep Lasme, Danny

I posted this somewhere else, but I should have posted this here. Lasme does multiple things. He rebounds. He blocks shots. He is pretty good at finishing down low. He defends. He even is good at help defense (coming off his man to get the block etc). He can really jump (remember that super dunk?! & look at him skying for those rebounds). He hustles. I thinks he gives you something every game (in multiple categories) whereas Wafer disappears on Offense & has made some really horrible passes. Wafer is looking better on D, but he is still getting beat. Also, Wafer, who should be on his very BEST behavior right now, has lost his head several times getting T’d up. You can’t have someone playing limited minutes having such a short fuse & costing you points——there’s gonna be high pressure/high stakes games—-you’ve got to have somebody who can keep their head & emotions in check. If they could keep them both it would be great, but if you have to let one go it should be Wafer (hopefully to Maine). Also, Lasme is young & could have more of a future with his athleticism, & the guy is smart. Expect JO to be injured a lot (already 3 or 4 injuries). Expect Shaq to miss about 1/4 to 1/3. KG is coming off of serious injury (need to limit his minutes). Expect Paul to be hurt. Semih can pile up the fouls really quick. The refs already show a propensity to whistle him. Ray Ray & Rajon are the least likely to miss games. Doc LIKES to play them heavy to handle the ball & space the floor. You’ve got Nate & Delonte to help there. Danny, look at all the games, Lasme has been the best overall of the three, keep Lasme!!!

by Ibemebe on Oct 20, 2010 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

Id still prefer Lasme....

I think the C’s could use a long, strong backup 3.

I think since the C’s have enough perimeter scoring wing players the emphasis should be a wing defender who can defend against the bigger scoring wing players like James and Kobe etc..

by fordescort on Oct 20, 2010 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

whatever! everyone on this blog was drooling over travis outlaw to be PP’s backup, and the guy could not even defend Pierce when we played Jersey. we will be just fine with Daniels and Von running the show.

by businessbmw on Oct 20, 2010 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah seriously

And “long, strong” doesn’t mean much to me if the guy can’t shoot. That’s why TA wasn’t given a contract good enough to stay here.

Honestly, we may as well have gotten TA back when you say “long, strong backup 3”, cause Lasme isn’t him, and thus not worth the roster spot over Wafer, who can shoot, if nothing else (and the something else anyways is that he can drive to the basket…)

by Tai on Oct 21, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I hated Von for the start of the preseason, but he looks better every game he plays, the knicks game he looked fluid with the mid range jumper, it looked really good. I really like Lasme, but Von can fill a big need for us, cause there is a big chance our old 2/3’s can go down plus Delonte has back problems.
