Trade Deadline Open Thread

Please use this thread as a place to discuss trade rumors and news from the day.  (Mods and authors, please update with the latest news as it becomes available - thanks)

In case you missed it, Nate Robinson should be a Celtic sometime today and it appears that Eddie House is on the way out.  We'll update you when the final pieces are in place and the trade becomes official.  via the Herald:

A Celtics source said yesterday there was a good chance that talks could stretch right up to today's trade deadline. The Celtics also hadn't closed the door on trading Ray Allen in a much bigger trade, though the source characterized the Celtics as reluctant to make such a deal.  The possibility also remains that the Celtics could make more than one trade before today's deadline.

Remember, the deadline for deals is 3:00 PM EST.  However, if the GMs are on the phone at the deadline, they can extend the deadline by staying on the phone to hammer out details.  Also, we don't always hear about the last minute deals until several minutes or even hours after the deadline passes.  So basically stay tuned all day.

News:

Ray Allen Updatevia Yahoo! Sports

While the Celtics have spent the past few weeks exploring their trade options with Allen, they don't expect to move the veteran shooting guard. The team is close to acquiring Nate Robinson from the New York Knicks, probably in exchange for Eddie House and J.R. Giddens. But Celtics president Danny Ainge called the potential for an Allen trade "highly unlikely."

House/Robinson Update - via Chris Sheridan

Multiple sources say the Knicks have reached a tentative agreement on a deal with Boston sending Nate Robinson and a second player to the Celtics for Eddie House, J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker. The identity of the second New York player was not immediately clear.

Update #2: According to RealGM, Marcus Landry will be the second New York player:

Marcus Landry will be the other player sent to Boston, according to a source that spoke with RealGM's Christopher Reina.

Update #3: The trade deadline has come and gone and nothing's official yet, according to Chris Forsberg's Twitter:

Still nothing official, according to C's. Still awaiting word from league. We're expected to chat with Doc around 12:30 here at team hotel.

Could that player from Sac to Celtics be Jason Thompson?

Trade tracker works with the Celtics getting Jason Thompson from Sac and Chandler & Robinson from the Knicks as part of the McGrady trade from Sac to NY-. We give up Scal, Eddie, Giddens, TA and Sheldon Williams.

Nonsense

There’s a higher probability that Quasimodo will jump from the 1400s to the present day through a wormhole and get traded in this deal than there is that Quis will.

Quis? You better believe it's possible!

You may end up eating your words, according to this news report:

One league source claims that Marquis Daniels, who played for Donnie Walsh at Indiana, could replace House in the deal. The trade must be completed by today’s 3 p.m. trading deadline.

Good question

Was it not wanting Nocioni’s contract or did Sactown want someone like Landry in the deal? We didn’t have anyone to offer like him.

by Celticsbloke on Feb 18, 2010 6:37 AM EST up reply actions

Condemning statement against BBD

The fact Houston seems like they’re gonna get K-Mart for nothing more than some slary relief and Landry/dorsey says everything you need to know about BBD. This is a confomation of what we all knew this past offseason. Teams just don’t see BBD as a very good player. He is about the best prospect we have. So, if he isn’t enough, than nothing is.

All Nate Robinson gives us is a player to replace Brian Scalabrine as the Celtic you’d least like to see on the floor. He’s a ball-hogging punk who plays no defense, never mind a team-oriented defense like the Celtics are supposed to be playing.

Pressure not to deal with Boston?

Not sure if anyone else saw this or if it had been posted, but thought it was interesting:

According to sources, a handful of Eastern Conference GMs pressured Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld to shy away from the Boston deal for obvious reasons. "It would screw up the balance of power in the East for three years," one executive said. One theory circulating in Dallas is that Grunfeld didn’t want to alienate other teams he might need to do business with as he continues dismantling the roster in the wake of the Gilbert Arenas firearms fiasco.

I’m sure Danny Ainge is frustrated as well. I’m sure if it was up to him he’d have been able to make a move for one of the many big name players he’s been rumored to have inquired about. Question

This all reminds me of the draft. Everyone gets excited, but the guy probably won’t play for awhile. Unless we do some trade with major players involved, what are the chances of whomever we get even getting playing time? Any player we get would have to be able to contribute this last part of the season, otherwise Doc won’t play them.

So, Nate for Eddie, then Nate has to play (I don’t see that as an improvement). If we get Kevin Martin, he’ll play. Nocioni, possibly.

I just see most of this talk, with the exception of dealing Ray; or Danny just completely ripping someone off, as pretty meaningless to the team for this year.

by amenhotep04 on Feb 18, 2010 9:01 AM EST reply actions

What is PHX Looking For Anyways?

They don’t seem to want to pay or draft anyone … other than Nash.

We can ship Ray, Perk and Scal/BBD (depending on whether they just want to get rid of salary or keep BBD), plus a pick for Amare & Richardson.

The trade would word. I just have no idea what PHX is trying to do the way they’ve been operating over the past couple years. I’ll take Amare & Richardson (in my dream world) and let Clifford and Tom T teach them how to play defense.

by Fred Roberts on Feb 18, 2010 9:11 AM EST reply actions

what if

we had traded pierce/perk after the ‘ship for anthony/camby like denver offered.. then took on noc’s contract… rondo, martin, anthony, garnett, camby. best starting 5 in the nba. good for short term in KG and camby, longterm with rondo martin and anthony. today the only deal i can see happening is allen for richardson. richardson’s deal ends I believe next year so he’d come off the books with pierce, freeing lots of cap space. the year after its KG and sheed. JRich is a few years younger than Ray, and gives us a lot more athleticism. (we’d have TWO dunk champs on our team)

Makes sense : cheap contract, expiring (less than 1 million $), a wing who can defend and hit the open three. A poor man’s Bruce Bowen that could get a spot in our rotation… and if he doesn’t, he doesn’t cost us anything so it’s a no risk move.

Once the trading deadline has passed. Except of course to Celtics’ management, which will see an 85 million-dollar payroll go to 63 million in one swell foop if none of the players with expiring deals is resigned. That saves a big luxury tax hit.

They Will have the MLE, the LLE and that's it.

What else are they going to do? They will lose Robinson and Marquis Daniels at the end of the year, uness one of them is willing to play for the MLE or less. They have Bird rights on Ray Allen, but resigning him does zip for the team’s future. It’s like giving a drowning person a few more minutes to tread water. They have Bird rights on Tony Allen, but he’s just a complementary piece.

They also have to work out an extension with Perkins or lose him.

After thinking about it, I’m not at all upset about losing Kevin Martin. He isn’t the answer.
I’m not upset about Antawn Jamison either. You don’t start a youth movement with 33 year-old players.

I see five teams that could potentially offer good basketball value for Ray:

1. GS (Ellis, Biedrins)
2. Philly (Iguodala)
3. Phoenix (Stoudamire)

i am a celtics fan living in the bay area. i go to warriors games regularly, and i can say with confidence that monta ellis is not worth pursuing. he is a great scorer and decent ball handler. he is very exciting to watch … but he has a lot of warts that become more apparent when you see a game in person. slow walks back to the bench, not paying attention to the game, body language, etc..

if the Cs leadership was in better shape (like in 2008) and more likely to have an impact on ellis’s development, i’d say go for it. today, however, i think that rondo and ellis would clash intensely.

Keep Ray Ray, sign him as a free agent with a hugely reduced contract, and let him retire gracefully with the Celtics. This will provide veteran leadership off the bench for years while we groom a SG that we actually want, rather than whatever joe-smoe is available in the next 3 hours.

I don't dislike it....

But if we’re truly trying to win a championship this season or next, we need to make a bigger move than just getting Nate Robinson.

There’s not a whole lot of time to “groom a SG that we actually want,” when KG is limping up and down the court and Paul’s PPG is the lowest it’s been since his rookie season ( http://www.nba.com/playerfile/paul_pierce/career_stats.html ).

If we want to win another one with those two guys, then we need to bring in some help, and one of the ways to do that would have been to trade Ray.

At this point I think they’ll most likely just do what you stevenfuzz suggested above though, and I will remain frustrated with the situation, yet understanding since the trade we needed never really materialized.

by DollaBill on Feb 18, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

It's pretty obvious to me....

That most of the fans opinions on here are formed by lack of patients, fantasy, and reading bored “sports journalism”.

If you seriously think that Ray Allen, who has been the most consistent of the Big 3, is the catalyst for both the downfall and the resurgence of the Celtics (in trade), then this is completely delusional.

Everyone does realize there is a chance, and not a dream-chance, that the Celtics get their Mojo back… that KG gets a step back (he hasn’t been back on the floor all that long)… that pierce starts bleeding green in the fourth again… It’s not like this is impossible.

by stevenfuzz on Feb 18, 2010 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

As i've pointed out to you before

I have yet to see anyone flatout say Ray is the sole reason this team is struggling… His contract is expiring and potentially valuable, it would be ashame not to explore options.

It’s pretty obvious to me that this team needs some sort of shakeup, and Nate Robinson is just a bandaid to cover it up.

He's a catalyst for change because....

He’s the only valuable bargaining chip we have, other than the pu pu platter of expiring contracts that is TA, Eddie, Scal and Sheldon Williams.

I don’t want to see Ray go any more than you. I think our point of contention is that you happen to believe the team, as is, can still win.

I, on the other hand, see a KG who is averaging career lows in ppg, bpg, and rpg, and has yet to fully recover from an injury he sustained midseason last year.

Gotta keep up. At this point, with what’s left out there, I agree you don’t necessarily cash that chip in cause you’d be getting 50 cents on the dollar for it.

by DollaBill on Feb 18, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

You know...

I apologize for sounding like such a jerk… I guess I was just getting fed up…

Ray is one of the greats. He is going to have his moments this season, we ALL know it.

If we were getting an upgrade in return, a TRUE definite upgrade, like a Joe Johnson or Dwayne Wade or someone, I probably would be psyched. The problem is, I mean, Kevin Martin/Kurt Heinrik? The skill level of all these players is compatible to Ray right now, in his slump, I guess… but I just don’t see how trading a true great and getting stuck with a second-rate younger star helps us, at all.

We have Rondo for years to come. We should put the pieces we actually want around him when the time is right, not scar the team right now on a whim.

A Draft Pick???

So Ainge is also giving a draft pick for a two-month rental of Nate Robinson? If so, he ought to be fired. That would be Pitinoesque.

But maybe the pick is going to SAc as compensation for the other player who may be coming Boston’s way.

by Brickowski on Feb 18, 2010 11:10 AM EST reply actions

And 1

But if we’re sending House, Giddens, and a draft pick for Nate, I’m not sure it’s worth it, for a player who just doesn’t have the physical structure to be a good defender.

by braz on Feb 18, 2010 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

This has to be something bigger!

1- You don’t trade a #1 for Nate.
2- It’s questionable if you trade Eddie for Nate.
3- How could it possibly take this long to match salaries, I know it’s complicated, but these guys are supposed to know how this cap works.
4- If we get Noccioni back as the other player I’ll be… Not pleased!

Zydrunas Ilgauskas

Can we sign him? He’d be a good high post backup center for us. I’d also like to see him and Nate standing next to each other on our bench, if you could get both of them in a shot. Z is like a 2 feet taller than Nate. Our team will look like the circus.

by liamail on Feb 18, 2010 11:47 AM EST reply actions

Yes, yes,,,

But how many aging big guys do we want to carry on this squad?

Not saying I would entirely disagree with a Big Z signing, I’m just not sure there’d be a place for him with Sheed, KG, Perk, and Davis.

Plus, like RJ87 said, he’s going back to Cleveland after 30 days anyway.

Golden State

Danny needs to get on the horn with the Warriors brass and convince them that us taking Maggette’s contract on is worth them sending us Ellis and Randolph in a Ray/Scal/Walker deal.

Perk/Wallace/Williams
KG/Baby/Randolph
Pierce/Maggette
Ellis/Daniels
Rondo/Robinson

Sign some scraps to fill out inactive roster space.

randolph, ellis, and maggette

you really think you’re going to pry away 3 of golden state’s top 5 players with ray’s contract? i didn’t know the trade deadline came with such hysteria!

randolph – young, talented, injury prone. 2 years in the league, and 96 games played. pass.
ellis – i posted about him above.
maggette – FT machine … also overpaid for an(other) injury prone player.

wake me up when we pass the trade deadline.

Z

If we sign him it’d be to mess up the Cavs. If signed with us he’d be sticking it to the Cavs who signed Shaq to play in front of him. Just a revenge thing and it would make for some funny pictures with Nate. I don’t think will happen. I’m just pissed that the Cavs ( with the best record in the league….) Just got an allstar for nothing. How come we never get to give up nothing and get allstars?

by DollaBill on Feb 18, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

The reason being is because Danny Ferry is doing all he can to keep Bronage in Ohio. Aint no telling wat else he had to give up (under the table) especially if the wizards plan to buy out Z. Theres some desperate things going on in cleveland..hope it works out cuz we all know wat happens next if it doesnt.

Yall already have a Big Z (Rasheed) but picking him up if hes available wud be a nice move. You get a center that can post and hit the mid range. But who would you have to gv up to get him?? Hmmm??

Since Washington is going to wave him.

So how about you stop posting since you clearly are not up to date on trade deadline news (unless I missed some sort of sarcasm in your comment), are a Lakers fan, and use the word “Ya’ll”.

In that case....

Consider my first post penance for being a Lakers fan, and from here on out you’re fine by me.

Understand I’m just lashing out at everyone due to frustration caused by the Celtics inactivity.

We go from all but getting Caron Butler and Antwan Jamison to seeing Cleveland grab Jamison for nothing and us making a desperation deal for Nate Rob in a matter of days. Not a good week to follow the Celts.

Here is a great 4 teams trade that works, with Bos/NY/Sac/Hous

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yz4n92c

Jason Thompson becomes redundant in Sacramento since they get Landry and Hill. Thus we get him, then trade Baby to Houston with Billy, and get Battier, who also becomes redundant in Houston since they get Martin and they already have Ariza.

Thoughts?

I still don’t see Houston trading Battier but who knows? :p

High energy guy

…who fills the hole the Cs had (backup PG), and can score fast and in bunches. Given the offensive lapses this team has had recently, Danny felt that was another hole he could help fill.

by DRJ1 on Feb 18, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

At best he's a mrginal improvement over Eddie...

Neither can play D. All you add with Nate is the ability to drive and finish around the basket, but you sacrifice some shooting ability…. (and yes, i know their percentages from behind the arc are almost identical. But you tell me who you’d rather have shooting a clutch 3 in the 4th?)

by DollaBill on Feb 18, 2010 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

That's not a minor advantage to Nate

It’s something Eddie literally cannot do, at all, and that’s huge for the bench.

by Surferdad on Feb 18, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

So we are getting Landry, a player who is averaging less than 2 points per game, in exchange, essentially for Walker AND Giddens? Makes no sense to me. Landry will never play. So the team will look like this??

Rondo/Robinson
Ray/ ???
Perk/Wallace
Pierce/Daniels
KG/BBD

Am I misssing something? Landry, Shelden and Scal waste away on the bench. Who backs up Ray? Who gets the rebounds on the second unit? BBD will get a few, but his height and weight limit him. Sheed getting rebounds depends on what kind of mood he is in that night. That’s it. Who is the shooter in the second unit? Wallace? We need him in the post. We need a player other than Landry who is actually going to play some minutes. If this the deal and the only deal, then I fail to see how we improve enought to win number 18. Has to be more going on her.

by JPV on Feb 18, 2010 1:22 PM EST reply actions

When you look at Orlando’s bench and now Cleveland, it is clear that they have the better team on paper, 1 through 12. We had an opportunity to add quality at positions 9-12 and did not. But….I have been a Celtics fan since the days of Havliceck and White, and will go down swinging with them. We need to be healthy by April and to show the heart that we know lurks inside these players.

Landry will never play

ever, he might ride Scals’ warm up bike once in a while though!

Doubt he would lay even if he was in LA.

by ekj3489 on Feb 18, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Cheapness

The Robinson trade is neither here nor there. It will help a little if Robinson can handle the point better than House (both offensively and defensively).

My takeaway from this trading season is that Celtics management is unwilling to pay luxury tax unless the roster is good enough to be a clear contender. If that assumption is correct, the long slow decline begins in about 72 minutes.

by Brickowski on Feb 18, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Thanks

That cheered me right up!

by DollaBill on Feb 18, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

That assumes...

…there was a trade available for a better player than Ray. It seemed like that was the case but given we haven’t seen anything, perhaps the best things Danny came across were versions of Hinrich/Thomas for Ray.

Wyc & Co. paid through the nose the last 3 years

how you can call them cheap is unfathomable to me

Agreed

They’ve spent big time and will continue to.

Looks more like there wasn’t a good basketball trade available.

by TheOutletPass on Feb 18, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

They did pay through the nose

But just curious. Wasn’t the team profitable? And if so, don’t all of those profits go back to Wyc and Company? I don’t know the answer, but asking to see if anyone else does.

by vinnie on Feb 18, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

You’re right. They paid a hefty price for a chance at three rings. They have one and put the Celtics back on the map, both as a competitive team and as a business. They understandably are unwilling to py anything more this year and probably figure they already received a good return on their three year investment.

by JPV on Feb 18, 2010 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

From a business perspective, you can't blame them

Wyc was up front about being willing to go deep into luxury tax territory for a championship contender. If he deems this team is no longer a legit contender, it’s sensible for them to stop paying a premium.

by Mencius on Feb 18, 2010 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

Or they're clearing a roster spot

To add some veteran help after the trading deadline, something that would undoubtedly increase the luxury tax penalties…

Don't forget either...

That Nate gets a 1 million dollar bonus if he makes the playoffs…

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Feb 18, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

That's basically it, brick

Wyc knows the cap is coming DOWN and the CBA looms. He’s bracing for a major hit on the business.

Trade Exceptions

Teams have one year to complete a trade. Suppose I trade away a 5M dollar player and get a 4.25 million dollar player back. I could have taken back 6.25 million in salary (125% of 5M), but I did not. So I have a year to “use up” the remaining 2M.

That’s called a trade exception. You can’t combine it with other exceptions. You can split it up (e.g. acquire two 1M players) but you can’t go over the 2M amount. All trade exceptions expire one year after the date of the trade that gave rise to the exception.

by Brickowski on Feb 18, 2010 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

So, anything could be happening right?

Since basically ever 5 minutes a new eotw rumor comes out…

by stevenfuzz on Feb 18, 2010 2:12 PM EST reply actions

So with 45 minutes left

…still no hard deal? I dunno… seems like a ridiculous way to run a business.

by DRJ1 on Feb 18, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

What are you gonna do?

Butler’s traded, Martin’s traded, even Salmon’s traded. That leaves Monta “I’m injured during trade week, lucky me!” Ellis, and Andre “My team is stingy” Iguodala.

I don’t think Philly likes us, and I don’t know if Danny likes Ellis.

Oh well.

by Tai on Feb 18, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

I still want Ellis

With the caveat that he and RR would make for a small backcourt, I love his ability to create his own shot.

by TheOutletPass on Feb 18, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah uh

I suppose Ellis at this point would be ok, but it would probably mean giving up Perk to get Biedrins.

Forget it.

by Tai on Feb 18, 2010 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

So....

Someone (don’t remember who) at some point said something about it being nice to have a rookie and get younger w/ Landry.

Landry = 24 year old rookie
Walker = 22 year old sophomore

I know Landry won’t play and is likely thrown in for the salaries anyway…. but, just saying.

by DollaBill on Feb 18, 2010 2:20 PM EST reply actions

Yeah about Landry...

He’s only played in 17 games out of 53 for the Knicks. He’s just filler.

by Tai on Feb 18, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions

I know nothing about him

How do you?

D’Antoni has this weird way of completely ignoring certain guys on his roster. Wait… so does Doc. Uh, so do a lot of coaches. But sometimes they ignore guys that have real potential. Like Lester Hudson. So I don’t know about Landry. He could suck, he could not. We’ll probably never find out, since Doc = D’Antoni when it comes to playing these guys.

by DRJ1 on Feb 18, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Lester Hudson?

Let me know when he starts an all-star game….

by funkstarrdeluxe on Feb 18, 2010 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Please expand on Lester Hudson's potential

And also list all of the other guys Doc has not played who are now making major contributions on other teams.

by vinnie on Feb 18, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Lol

You know, you like to mention this a lot, but you don’t like to say who Doc has really forsaken. Hudson’s not even a PG, as far as Doc is concerned. There’s nothing wrong with that.

But Hudson has only been in 6 minutes in the last 5 games….that’s 1.2 min per game.

by Tai on Feb 18, 2010 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

Hey

Did I say Lester is an All Star? Or a PG? I said… he had “potential”. Which he did, and has, and yet was ignored.

Anyway, I think not only is Landry not going to get PT, he’s not even going to be a Celtic… ASSUMING that there is actually a deal happening (which is not at all clear at this point). I’m hearing they’ll probably get rid of him immediately.

by DRJ1 on Feb 18, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

I'm trying to talk myself into Nate....

but when it comes down to it, I’m going to miss Eddie. And I think the C’s are going to miss his shooting come playoffs….. but I can live with this trade.

Nate will be good for the second unit, should help take some of the scoring burden off of sheed, he’s quick and dynamic, if Doc can teach him to play some D they’ll be ok.

Worst part of this trade is that TA isn’t involved. I was really looking forward to the day where I wouldn’t have to watch him slam easy layups too hard off the glass and look like a complete spaz on offense.
