Celtics Handle Blazers

In what was arguably their most complete game of the season, the Boston Celtics wiped the floor with the Portland Trailblazers, 96-76, en route to their third straight win.

  • The energy level was consistent for the entire game. No hills and valleys in this one. Whenever Portland made a small run, Boston responded.
  • Kevin Garnett has put together back-to-back encouraging games. He finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds and three blocks.
  • Ray Allen continued his hot shooting from Thursday, putting in 21 points on 9-14 from the field.
  • Another day, another double-double for Rajon Rondo. 10 points and 11 assists in this one.
  • The C's outscored Portland 24-13 in the second quarter, and brought an 18 point lead into the break.
  • Jerryd Bayless scored nine points in the third quarter and helped Portland get within 12 at one point, but, Boston responded to all of Portland's runs.
  • At the start of the fourth quarter, Glen Davis drew two consecutive charges, and Ray Allen buried three straight jumpshots - two of them being three-pointers - which put the Celtics' lead back up to 17.
Again, it was a convincing win for the Celtics, and they now stand at 3-0 on this west coast road trip. They wrap things up in Denver on Sunday. A sweep would certainly be nice, but, like they say, three out of four ain't bad. It's still unclear as to whether or not Nate Robinson will join the team then, or wait to debut against...the Knicks...at home on Tuesday.

it was a sweet one for us. some of the rust is leaving. rondo is a bonafide all star. maybe with hi multiple injuries, pp can get some needed rest. it was good to see tony bounce back after hurting the ankle. perk was not so hot again. somebody take him to free throw school.

Ray might be old

but he is the best conditioned player on this team. He, along with Baby, single handedly saved what alomst was about to be another blown lead

Nice to blow out a team again.

especialy since we have not done so for months it seems.
We saw a solid team effort in the game.

The starters and bench for once all played well together in a single game.
The C’s looked like a well oiled machine.

Everything clicked, from the offensive end of the court which we saw a fluid passing, ball movement and scoring as well as on the defensive end,
where we saw tough, tenacious defense for just about 48 minutes.

Ray got game ball as he has found the fountain of youth it seems with his play the last 2 games.

It was also nice to see Doc give the starters real rest tonight.
Considering we won in LA last night, I feared a mental let down or physical let down was possible tonight.
But the C’s showed no such letdown, which was surprising and impressive.

Lets make this a 4- 0 road trip with and win in Denver !

Good game!

The first half was amazing. And it was great to see how we answered the blazers run. Huge night by Ray…

KG looked great! Haven`t seen him move and play like that in a long time. 2 good games for him in a row…RR and Davis with solid performances too…

celtics

Suddenly all the doomsday Celtic fans, are back saying Boston has a chance. And what about Ray Allen, many were saying he was washed up, he looked awful good to me from where I was sitting. He was moveing around those picks, and nailing that 3 point shot. They were doubling him all night, and couldnt slow him down. Thats Ray, has been a second half player in recent years. Rhondo picked apart Portlands defence, like it was a high school team. The best part is KG is starting to look like himself again, and Perk looked like a man possesed. If we can just get Paul P back we will take back that crown.

I am not doomsday, but still not do believe they can win the championship

I still firmly believe that age and wear will catch up to them. As a fan of 40 plus years, I hope I am wrong. We shall see. There is a difference between doomsday and not believing that the team on supports cannot win the championship. Doomsday would be having to be a fan of the Nets.

I feel the same way BUT...

after seeing the Lakers, Magic and Cavs (2 in a row) all lose this week (as well as Hawks, Nuggets and Spurs) I am reminded that even the best teams go through tough stretches for various reasons. The good news for the Celts is they have some momentum and the roster is getting healthier at just the right time of year.

If I had to bet, I would still go with a Lakers-Cavs Finals, but at least the Celts are in that conversation now.

by Surferdad on Feb 20, 2010 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

So, you are using a 3-game sample to judge this team's potential

And that, somehow, is more legitimate than the first 50 games of the season. Go figure.

by vinnie on Feb 20, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

That's more like it!

Celtics bball again. KG appears to be working the kinks out and Ray was loosey goosey. Dare we hope they can sustain it?

Had to laugh at McMillan's post game comments

Claimed the Lakers D was better than ours. I guess by better, he meant gives up more points.

well...

N.O. isn’t exactly on the west coast, but I suppose thats just semantics. 3-0 coming out of the All-Star break though sure is a good start to the final push of the reg. season.

Ray Allen?

Who is this man wearing your jersey and shooting amazing?

The question is...

who was wearing his jersey, because this is the Ray I know.

I noticed

Rasheed got his 16th tech of the season last night. Does that mean he’s missing the denver game tomorrow? I heard some were rescinded…

the few, the proud, the boston celtics

by bleedgreen34 on Feb 20, 2010 9:51 AM EST reply actions

They’ve rescinded quite a few of those. He’s currently at 12 or 13 if not mistaken.

by BudweiserCeltic on Feb 20, 2010 10:03 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah he was at 12 heading into last night's game

Because his ‘T’ against the Lakers was rescinded…BUT…He picked one last night anyway, so he now has 13 total on the season.

by Greg Payne on Feb 20, 2010 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

16 T's

And since the one against the Lakers was rescinded, he really has 13 counting against him.

I almost typed “only 13”.

Told You So

That is what I keep telling my buddy who is a Lackers fan. Yes I actually have a close friend who has them as his team, ugh. Anyway, I have been telling him for a while now that once this team gets healthy they will be able to compete with any team out there. He argued that if Kobe had played the other night that it would have been a landslide victory. I then had to remind him that Kobe played in Boston and managed only a one point win. At any rate, it’s good to see KG and Ray looking like they still have some game. Rondo is the real deal and he will get much, much better too!

by C'sFanDan on Feb 20, 2010 10:02 AM EST reply actions

Correction

Managed a 1 point win in Boston after having the opportunities handed to them with some extremely favorable calls. And let’s not forget last year when they fouled out KG in the 4th quarter with a ridiculous offensive foul call.

All in all, the last few games between these teams have been 1 pt wins (after LA got spanked by 32 in Game 6, that is). Funny, but I don’t see that one team has a clear advantage over the other at this point. I don’t care if Bryant didn’t play, just like nobody cares when we had guys sitting out or playing with injuries. In a long season those things average themselves out.

Tremendous Victory

I still don’t think this team will compete for the championship but am extremely pleased with the way they have played on this trip. I still believe that by playoff time, the wear and tear will be much worse and they just won’t be able to keep up with the young legs. For now, however, I will simply enjoy the ride.

by vinnie on Feb 20, 2010 10:34 AM EST reply actions

Of all the teams out there, this braintrust understands the ebb and flow of the regular season, and the roll that these guys are on needs to be bottled up and reapplied Mid April, so they can crush Atlanta and Cleveland and that west coast team I can’t remember the name of.

Still wanna trade Dead Eye Ray? Definitely needed that w/ no Eddie around especially. More of the same please!

Best Game of the Year

Now if they put together a string of games like that, I will revise my predictions, but that was their best game of the year. It will take sixteen performances like last night’s to win a championship. An occasional gem won’t do it.

Portland also played badly. Brandon Roy did nothing, Camby did nothing and LaMarcus Aldridge isn’t quite good enough in the post—yet. Also, Andre Miller overdribbled (as he usually does) and tried to force too many plays. The Blazers needed another big man with the injuries to Oden and Przybilla, but there are going to miss Steve Blake.

by Brickowski on Feb 20, 2010 11:32 AM EST reply actions

Roy is still hurting and MacMillan played the younger Bayless instead of the vet Miller down the stretch

plus the Blazers as hole stunk it up on the offensive end.

Aldridge and Camby should be as good as Oden and Pryzbilla but they didn’t look it last night.

Who was the guy coaching last night?

No naysayers and Doc bashers today? Yeah, that statememnt is about as simplistic as the ones about no Ray bashers. I wish folks would have a balance of perspective.

you admitted yesterday that I was not a Doc hater nor a Doc lover.....yes please do keep some perspective

balanced of course with a memory…..I certainly won’t be taking my time today (now that I am rested) to converse with you about my Doc perspective over the years, and what I thought was being conveyed yesterday in the original post by Red2.

You seem to be to able to articulate both sides of an argument and read minds as well. I l will let you continue to be the center of your own attention…..you can however kiss my simplistic green Leprechaun arse….

by Master Po on Feb 20, 2010 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Speaking of simplistic

Well, here is another simplistic truth for you… Each person is the center of their own attention whether they want to admit it or not. If it weren;t so, you wouldn’t be posting to say what you could do by actually doing it – the best way to let someone continue to be the center of their own attention is to let them, not tell them you intend to let them.

Reading fundamental though. I said you’re not a Doc hater nor am I a Doc apologist, which is very different from what you just said. If you’re going to quote me, please quote me right.

Now , if only you have a kissable arse, I’d be honoured to kiss it for you, but alas, all you have is one leg. :)

did you see any quote marks around my typing?

I wasn’t quoting you!!! I was paraphrasing you…please know the difference..

Please follow my one leg you mention in an upward direction ….I’ll bet you will find an arse to kiss……it should be familiar territory for you I suspect…

Is it Soup Yet?

by Master Po on Feb 21, 2010 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

You suspect?

Maybe YOU should take the time to learn how to paraphrase. You don’t include fabrications in referecing what someon said and then say you’re paraphrasing.

Oh yes, I agree with you that it’s familiar territory for me, whch is why I can say with certainty that you ain’t got one. :)

Why is it taking Nate Rob So long to join the team?

Last I heard they were talking about him not joining the team until Tuesday against the Knicks. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember a few years ago when we tradeed for Wally Szczerbiak he was in uniform later that same evening to play against Sactown.

by Tradetime on Feb 20, 2010 12:06 PM EST reply actions

Why is everyone searching out for the Ray Bashers? and if there were any, why? Our problems had little to nothing to do with him, hes stayed healthy and been overplayed, and has a poor 3 pt %, but also the best 2 pt % of his career… Honestly, he was very low on the list of problems coming into the trade deadline imo, but he was the expiring contract

by lennz on Feb 20, 2010 12:14 PM EST reply actions

because they were two groups of people

one who focused on the value of his contract (understood) and the group who kept saying how bad he sucked and was to old to guard anybody and was really over the hill,

Bashers

There are always a few bashers regardless of which player you are discussing. Ray is still a great player— a great 35 year old player.

If you can trade Ray for a player who is only 85-90% as good but is 25 years old, you should do it.

ICE

You see how much ice they had on KG’s shin? Shin splints s*ck!!! How can anyone play at a high level with shin splints?

by ForexPirate on Feb 20, 2010 1:25 PM EST reply actions

At last

at last they played focussed and addressed the thing that’s been killing them this season — FOCUS.

Too early to proclaim them champions or get overly optimistic but if they keep this up through the rest of the season, they are as much a contender as anyone else.

Next year we MUST start rebuilding. This team is good but definitely not a contender for the title. This team was built as a one and done team. This team gets older every year.
