Is Paul Pierce a Celtic Legend

Im really annoyed at the comments Charles Barkley made the other day saying that the Truth isn't an all time great!!! What is that supposed to mean. The list of players that he mentioned being out of Pierces league are

1Russell

Bird

Parish

Havlicek

Mc Hale

D.Johnson

Jones

Maxwell

Cowens

JJ White

Brown

Auerbach

There are a few more that were mentioned like Reggie Lewis(RIP) who they said was going to be better than Pierce anyway which i kind of agree on because he was really starting to show promise and Bias(RIP) who perhaps could have been something special.

Anyways, what im trying to say is that Paul Pierce is a Celtic legend. When he was drafted, he pretty much was the Celtics until the big 3 were formed so i disagree completely with Charles(he doest have a clue) and agree with E.Smith that Pierce wouldnt have been any different from the 80s players(not including Bird,Parish,McHale). So Paul Pierce should be apart of that great list of legends.

Lebron & Kobe

Yeah, all of those guys on that list are definitlely Celtics greats, legends, whatever you want to call them But, none of them did what Pierce did in the 08 playoffs. He stuck it to both Lebron and Kobe when it mattered most. Charles, that is what legends are made of.

Charles is a bafoon...

C’s fan you are absolutely correct, we won in 08 because PP outplayed Lebrick and Kome and for me that is enough to say PP is indeed a Celtic legend…Barkley had his chance when he got his best supprting cast with the 93 Suns which in all honesty I rooted for as it was the their best time to outshine MJ and the Bulls, and Charles muffed it…..well too bad coz PP did not and Im tellin ya all, if The C’s get to the Finals again, I would tend to think PP would play at another level not seen by Charles and those Kobe lovers from TNT and ESPN.

"No I’m not KG. Not at all, but I’m Big Baby Glen Davis from LSU, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I’m not the Big Ticket. I’m the Ticket Stub. Don’t count the Ticket Stub out. You might need the ticket to get in the game, but you leave with the ticket stub, because you’ll never forget this game."

Pierce is a very good player but not as good as his stats suggest . He makes too many turnovers and forces his game at too often. his poor decision making prevents him from being a hall of fame player . He tries to do too much and doesn’t move particularly well off the ball. He has THE TALENT too have been better but he doesn’t think the game well.

Thank you for this topic

I am so sick of hearing people talk trash on Pierce and suggesting that he needs to be traded. You can’t be a true Celtics fan if you actually believe that. All of this garbage I hear about Pierce is based off his game during the last 2 months. He had knee surgery and is trying his hardest even in times when the rest of his team is either sick or injured. Its also amusing to me that people are saying he is not nearly as good Russell, Cousy, Parish, etc., but I can almost guarantee that blabber is coming from people that were either not even alive when they were playing or wearing diapers. Paul’s #34 jersey will be hanging from the garden rafters as soon as he retires I don’t care what Chunky Charles says about him…. At least when Pierce retires he won’t have to do taco bell commercials to pull him out of his gambling debt.

One of the top 5 celtics of all time. People not in the know take him for granted. He’s not super flashy just consistantly produces year after year so he often gets lost in the conversation.

Maybe if he gives himself a nickname like Kobe (the black mamba) or pulls sideline antics like Lebron and the Lebronnett’s he will get noticed for what he is. A hall of fame player who has been loyal to the franchise who believed in him.

CsFan Dan is on the money..he locked Kobe and Lebron up in the 08 playoffs. Dominant defensive effort in both of those series.

PP ahead of Havlicek and Cooze, and Jo Jo, to name a few? You were definitely born in the 80’s, Needy. PP is about a top 10 -15 in the list. I had not read your last sentence and I first wrote that "You most have been born in the 80’s. lol . I saw later you had stated that fact.

His 34 will definitely go up in the rafters – not .00000001% doubt of that.

Pierce is great...

As an all-time Celtic….I`d put him as high as # 5, no lower than #8.

He`s going into the Hall of Fame without a doubt.

Some actually believe Reggie Lewis was better than Paul?!?
I won`t even dignify that with a response!!

Paul Pierce is, without a doubt, one of the greatest Celtics of all-time

Pierce single-handedly led the Celtics into the playoffs from 2001-2005 (4 Years). Yes, I understand the Celtics also had “Toine,” for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. Antoine shot sub 40% (from the field and sub 75% from the line (74%, 61%) during each of those two seasons. What I’m trying to get at is that Pierce really had no help throughout his first 10 years in Boston and yet he managed to lead the team for 4 years straight into the playoffs. I find this to be a phenominal feat considering Paul was running alongside guys like Jiri Welsch, Mark Blount, Brandon Hunter, Chucky Atkins, Mike James, and the great Kwame Brown. Pierce took these “below-average” teams to playoff contention on his lonesome.

In my opinion, being a ballhog, inefficient scorer, lofting up unintentional glass-cleaning threes, and playing below-average defense, I can barely give Antoine credit for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 success of the Celtics. Was he a guy other than Paul Pierce that could actually make some contribution? Yes he was, but saying that through a 10-year period the best player you played with was Antoine Walker is depressing.

Pierce did also lead the team to one of its worst records in history in 2006-07 (24-58). However, aside from Wally and “The Candy Man” Olowakandi, (and Paul himself) Paul was playing basketball with a bunch of little kids . Not to mention Pierce had the stress reaction in his foot, forcing him to miss almost half the season.

In general, Paul Pierce has been the face of the Celtics franchise for his entire career. Paul Pierce is a Boston Celtics legend. Give him the credit that he deserves. I love the guy and everything he has brought to this franchise. He will always be one of the best in my book.

Agreed.

Very well written.

I don’t think Kwame Brown played for us though.

Whenever I worry about the Celtics, I just remember the 18 losses in a row and I think to myself "This isn't so bad"

by Ben F. on Feb 22, 2010 2:41 AM EST up reply actions

Apologies. Kwame didn't play for Boston.

*Kendrick Brown.

Kwame and Kendrick both went as lottery picks within the same draft (with Kwame going 1st overall) and share a common feature: Lack of production.

The Celtics drafted Joe Johnson 10th in this draft (I will not rant on the terrible Phoenix trade), followed by Kendrick Brown with the 11th pick.

still, your larger point is spot on.

Pierce deserves major props for carrying this team on his two shoulders during those year and THEN showing what he could do with a team that had just two more complementary stars.

‘Sort of analogous to the ’criticism’ of Brady for the years when his passing stats paled in comparison to say, Mannings (despite the amazing won-loss record). Sprinkle in a couple of star receivers and presto MVP passing season.

These are team sports. Paul’s cred for consideration as an all-time great can dismiss the context of the different teams he had to play on, both good and bad.

by mmmmm on Feb 22, 2010 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with the last comment…you could also say Pierce led us to the playoffs those years in spite of Antoine. I shudder when I think of those days, trying to make myself like Antoine’s game even though I knew deep down how week it was.

paul pierce

Pierce can’t compare to celtic greats of past because he makes too many poor judgements.

by cemetery on Feb 21, 2010 9:29 PM EST reply actions

That’s a very ignorant comment. Did you read any of these posts or did you simply chime in with your very limited knowledge of Paul Pierce?

by Brewnami on Feb 22, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

You can't be serious

Paul Pierce and Larry Bird average the same number of TOs (3) and assists (about 4) per 36 minutes played. Therefore, Larry Bird can’t compare to Celtic greats because he makes too many poor judgements?

Come on man

by avirgile2 on Feb 22, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

Well yeah, Larry really blew the big one.

by RedsBean on Feb 22, 2010 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

Please elaborate on what you constitute as “poor judgement”. Do you mean on the court or off? Because to me he appears solid in both areas. Please don’t bring up getting stabbed.

by DJlives on Feb 22, 2010 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Poor judgement?

Hmmm? I must have missed those games. Strange.

In my mind, #34 will see the rafters in the Garden and the HOF. No doubt. I’m pretty sure he’s the 3rd leading scorer all time with the C’s and is 5th in minutes played. Not sure how those numbers could possibly reflect a player who has poor judgement.

He’s the consumate Celtic and really relishes the role. I wouldn’t want any one else leading the Green.

by RedsBean on Feb 22, 2010 7:40 PM EST reply actions

AND...

After all those years having to be a one-man team (pretty much) he managed to ship out any ego he might have had, not give two shakes about a downward trend in his stats, rally the team, share the ball, play a large part in bringing together 3 (now 4) all stars, and I’m sure would take a HUGE pay cut to stay with the C’s and play off the bench if it was in the best interest of the team. Not to mention about 2398147095 other good things I have to say about him. Love the kid, he’s got real heart.

by RedsBean on Feb 22, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

AND...

The kid was stabbed 11 times in the face, neck, and back. He needed to undergo lung surgery to repair the damage…. and then started all 82 games the next season. Nuff said.

KID IS TOUGH AS NAILS
