Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Was Landing Rasheed a Mistake?

Rasheed Wallace. Quite an interesting player. Let me start by saying that Rasheed's little fadeaway from the block is the best weapon in his arsenal by a long shot. However, there are some numbers that stand out to me:

28% - Rasheed's 3-Point percentage this year

18- 18 out of 51 games this year, Rasheed has taken two or more 3-point shots...and missed every single one (0 for 56 shooting)

3- Rasheed tallies up 3 fouls in about 23 minutes a game

19- 19 Techs this season (expected)

24- 24 out of 51 games this year, Rasheed has failed to pull down more than 3 rebounds a game

I don't know how to put this. I have been forcing myself to like this guy (Rasheed) and after half a season of attempted persuasion, I cannot convince myself that Rasheed is doing more good than harm to this team. Here are a couple reasons why:

Let's talk about defense first. Rasheed is not quick enough to stick with bigs his size. Not only can he not guard his own man, but he is slow on the help defense. I can not think of a time that Rasheed has drawn a charging call (if Big Baby can do it, you should be able to as well). Rasheed racks up 3 fouls a game. Simply put, I see him as a hacker. In almost half the games this year, Rasheed has failed to pull down more than 3 rebounds in a game. His inability to box out and rebound leads to the dreaded "Offensive Rebounds Allowed" stat, giving multiple extra opportunities to opponents. Constantly giving other teams free points and extra possessions with his technicals as well, I can't take his attitude towards the game. Rasheed, you have been in this league for 13 years and you still can't control your emotions? Come on man. Not to mention is "Manny Ramirez" (all you Sox fans know what I'm talking about) persona...AKA Appearance of being lazy.

Now, for the offense. I have two major problems with Rasheed's offensive game. First, and most obvious, his three point shooting has been horrendous this year. I thought he came in to help the C's spread the floor to give Perk and KG room inside? Well, you got to make your wide open threes and stop hucking up bad ones. Although not cashing in from long distance, I have to admit, Rasheed has a phenomenal back-to-the-basket game. His fadeaway from the black is very high percentage and nearly unguardable. Although I don't have a problem with his post game, it takes away from the offensive flow of the game. All passing stops, and once the ball goes in to Rasheed you know it isn't moving elsewhere until the ball is fired at the rim. I do understand that KG, Pierce, Rondo, Perk have their isolations too, but they all face the basket and allow for passing opportunities to still exist within the offense. Now I know I'm ripping Rasheed pretty hard here, but I do accept that he is here to help us win a championship. I think that Danny Ainge should have made a different move or dealt him at the deadline.

Do you think Rasheed contributes positively or negatively to the C's?

I understand Sheed is having a tough season...

But I think he is an overall great player. He is simply having a slump, just like everyone was having. He will pull out of it eventually, and obviously the sooner the better. He is usually an excellent 3 point shooter, he almost always has at least 1 steal per game. There have been a couple games this season where he was player of the game. He had a very nice debut with the Celtics. He is healthy, big, and a normally a great shot. As soon as he pulls out of this, you will see the numbers jump quite a bit. He can easily pull in 20 points per game when he gets hot again. Don’t lose faith because of the past couple months, Rasheed Wallace is a power house shooter and great defender. I mean Ray Allen was shooting 34% in January and half of February and now look at him. Didn’t mean he sucked as a player, but still people notice players off their game and immediately their first reaction is to trade them.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog...

I think it’s more of his demeanor that gets me than his lack of production thus far. His shooting doesn’t worry me too much, but it is simply inexcusable to come to a championship contending team very out of shape and as I watch him play he just doesn’t seem to be putting forth 100%. Maybe I’m being too critical, but as I watch this guy play, I tend to see a lack of help from him on the weak side, leading to easy baskets. I don’t think it’s because hes a bad defender really, I think that Sheed needs to really focus on getting into shape and playing hard. But then again, who am I to say that he isn’t working hard? I have no idea, this is just the sense I get from observation.

Slump?

A season-long slump? Then we should have traded him already with Eddie House because he was in a season-long slump. Though I understand that we need size or length to match up with the league’s best team.

He was brought in to be a backup and because of injuries has been forced to be a quasi-starter. As a backup he’s better than average. If KG’s knee continues to improve and Baby keeps playing better, Sheed won’t need to pay more than about 18 mpg. At that point, he’ll be able to play hard more consistently and will, in fact, prove to be a better than average backup.

I defer my opinion until the playoffs. A few good games and he wins back the fan’s. Like everyone else I want to let out a big SHEEEEEEED! But can’t seem to squeeze it out.

He’s been down low more which is a good thing.

What does anything of this matters now? We signed him and he is going to play regardless of what is commented in here. Why bother. I didnt see a lot of negativity when he was signed. He was brought to be a difference maker. So be it.

I see you like this line of reasoning:

“Why bother talking about it.” Well, Rey, this site is what you call a “blog”, and on blogs we like to discuss hypotheticals or analyze states of affairs concering our beloved C’s. Thats why we come, to bother talking about it. I think this post is a legitimate one, the trade deadline just passed and people around here have been questioning Sheed’s heart all season.

In addressing the post, I see a serious lack of focus with Sheed on some days. He reminds me of a child with ADHD on an exam day—it seems that sometimes he just cannot focus enough to make the grade. The type of D that is required of a big man in the Celtic system takes 100% focus and a lot of movement, not daydreaming and hoping to be in the right place at the right time. I think when it really counts Sheed can hone in and focus. Anyone got any ritalin?

Sheed’s treys: Like most, unless the 3 is wide open and the shot clock is running down I cringe when Sheed throws up that line drive off the rim, but he HAS to do it. I wouldn’t mind seeing him rotate into the post more, but if he stops taking three’s then he stops opening up the paint and stretching the floor. We need him out there and shooting the open shots so that defenders know they have to get back and defend him outside and so that others have room to move, penetrate, or pass.

Techs: 19? I think he only has 13, but they are still annoying. I hafta say though, sometimes I do agree with his argument, but he needs buckle down and allay that anger into D or something else. Stop messing with the refs, they already don’t like you.

On the brighter side, he’s got a great post game and some quick hands.

Correction

I think you meant we expect he will have 19 techs by the end of the season, not that he already had 19. My b.

by RedsBean on Feb 22, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair

Sheed has had 3 techs rescinded.

That’s just awful by the refs.

by Tai on Feb 22, 2010 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

WEAK

I use to love Sheed but it was a horrible pickup for us. He can’t defend, doesnt want to rebound, shoot inside, or pass. It seems like he only wants to shoot 3’s and thats it. He doesn’t fit into the Celtic mindset. Hopefully next year we can trade him and get Amare.

Landing Rasheed was not a mistake.....

He was the best big man / center available this off season and Danny was wise to sign him.

If we remember last year we had no back up center after losing PJ Brown and we were being overpowered in the low post by centers when all we had to play back up center were undersized power forwards Powe and Baby.

This year with Sheed on board he has adequately remedied that problem since he has with his length and bulk helped neutralize centers from dominating us offensively in the low post, like they did last year.

We must not forget how Rasheed has helped solve our lack of a big man presence in the middle, which was so much of a problem with last year.
I do not recall many games this year (compared to many last year) were centers have dominated us in the low post and a lot of that has to do with the great work I think Rasheed has done defensively in the low post for us (along with Perk also).

Considering he is a 35 years old and was never to athletic to begin with I think he has been a net plus for the C’s this year for the above reason and also because I think:

He is our best big man coming off the bench.
He is one of our most vital players coming off the bench.
He is probably our best low post scorer on the whole team.
He is one of our best low post power defenders on the whole team.
He is after KG our best shooting big man on the whole team (not counting Scal)
He is our only legit center on the bench.

Lets also remember the C’s probably signed Rasheed thinking that in order to win a banner this year we will have to get through Shaq, Howard and Bynum.
Since Rasheed has a history of playing all those power centers very well
defensively his value and importance to the C’s future success will only increase as we enter the playoffs.

How do techs work?

Do you get suspended after you get 19 and then the "counter" gets reset to 0? Do you get suspended every time you get a tech after 19? Can someone explain it to me please?

by Scal4theallstargame on Feb 22, 2010 11:31 PM EST reply actions

Yes but

I agree that Sheed has been a disapointment so far but would you rather have Big Gravy or Scal as our 1st big man off the bench?

NO

Sheed is for the PLAYOFFS!! thats what his here for!!!

by brotherhood on Feb 23, 2010 4:59 AM EST reply actions

Yes, he’s pathetic, lazy, not a team player.

by Blackberry33 on Feb 23, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

rasheed is a natural PF not C who have to come of the bench hes a wing player like KG .it was in detroit after big ben trade to bulls sheed was forced to play inside.hes much better as a starter too and is probably bit disappointed coming of the bench but never showed his true feelings regarding Docs decision to make him just a supporting cast again good unselfish team player . i know that as a starter he would do a lot more damage out there.still i expect from him plenty of good games . 2 more weeks and sheed will be in shape that he and everyone who knows him is accustomed to.but still for a guy whos 35 years old hes doing good job defensively blocks and steals . and offensively whenever he is in the post Sheed is almoste unstoppable.however it would be nice to see him rebounding bit more and less arguing with refs.love sheed regardless and all u haters out there soon you will learn how good of a player he is and how lucky you are to have him in boston

by sunra on Feb 23, 2010 11:25 AM EST reply actions

hit or miss

he’s been very hit or miss. Some games he has come in and taken charge in the paint. but often times he hovers away from the hoop and jacks up bad threes (any three from sheed is a bad three). It feels like he only steps up when he’s being criticized by the media/fans.

We are not stuck with sheed!

Other teams begged DA to trade sheed! we are not stuck with sheed as others have put it! this off season DA can trade sheed and get a low 1st rounder, from denver or the hawks…
