Around SBN: My First Fight: Diego Sanchez

Seven Seconds Or Mess

In his debut for the Celtics, Nate Robinson was predictably hot and cold.  Without a grasp of the offense, he was playing a glorified game of pickup, which honestly isn't all that different than what he's been doing all his career in New York.

  • Pierce sat out tonight with a sore thumb and a case of the flu.
  • Nice to see the ovation for House.  He was a lot of fun to watch and the fans showed him the love.
  • Turning the page, the fans also gave Nate a "welcome to Boston" ovation.
  • Of course Bill Walker stole the show with some high flying dunks.  He could be a very nice fit on that team.
  • Sergio Rodriguez looks right at home as well.  Donnie Walsh quietly got some nice pieces out of those trades.
  • David Lee must be a ninja, because the C's never saw him until he was laying the ball in, time and time again.
  • Celtics can't play at the Knicks pace and hope to stay with them the whole game.  Gotta slow it down.
  • Another big game for Ray Allen despite only going 1-5 from 3.
  • Huge stats game for Rondo with 16 assists to go with 15 points and 3 steals (and one big dunk)

Something about Doc

As a player’s coach he’s letting his players play lazy. That’s what it looks like to me. How can veterans leave so many pick n rolls wide open if they were trying. The Knicks have a nice rotation now. I never thought Duhon was worth much. Rodriguez looks at home. KG and Rasheed should have 20 each and David Lee shouldn’t have so many open shots. these are calls that I think Doc should be screaming about

of course Bill Walker looked awesome

Why do I get the feeling we’ll regret giving up on him so soon?

by Ahab3 on Feb 23, 2010 10:05 PM EST reply actions

because we will regret it…the kid was a top 15 pick had he not had knee surgery… he has natural talent and heart. Doc just never gave the kid the time of day

by Nick Sannicandro on Feb 23, 2010 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

um...guys...take it easy

walker had plenty of talent, but not much of a complete game. personally, i would have liked to have held on to him longer, but how many guys have talent like him who don’t do anything? i mean, if he was really doing so well in practice, i think doc would have found a way to get him real minutes. also, keep in mind, you only need to play offense on a d’antonio team, and fact is, most players in the nba could score a lot if you gave them enough chances…so if walker puts up good offensive numbers the rest of the year, i really don’t know what that means.

by guy incognito on Feb 23, 2010 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

Bill Walker looked right at home on the floor

You have to ask yourself why he never looked like that in Boston. Of course, some will say there’s no pressure playing for the Knicks, but all the players on that team are playing for contracts next year.

If George Hill had Rivers as a coach his first two years, he’d still be riding the pine with people wondering if he could play. The C’s will rue the day they gave up Walker, especially in a deal to get a chump like Robinson.

by lemonade sky on Feb 23, 2010 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

two things...

first,

i mean, if he was really doing so well in practice, i think doc would have found a way to get him real minutes

Why do you think this? Doc has a pretty lousy track record as far as playing rookies who deserve a chance. Ryan Gomes and Leon Powe both only got extended minutes when somebody else got hurt halfway through the season. Rondo played behind Telfair for an entire season. Guys like Lester Hudson and Bill Walker saw virtually no time this year, even when the C’s were shorthanded, or when the rotation players were dogging it…

secondly, I am bummed about losing Walker too, given that his contract extends for 2 more years at minimum money. He’s essentially a no-risk player with lots of potential… and he might even have filled a need on this team next year. But in the Robinson trade DA obviously had to choose to include either Walker or at least one draft pick. Who knows if Danny can do better with a pick in the late 20’s? Clearly DA thinks he CAN do better, given that Walker hasn’t blown anyone away. Ainge is someone who always believes he can find the steal of the draft, and so he takes a swing for the fences approach. Keeping Bill Walker is just a single in the mind of Danny…

Didnt get to watch the game

I didnt get to watch the game and so this post isnt about it. I dont know how to start a thread or find an old one so I thought I would just put it here. On BBD new nickname, has anyone thought of “The wrecking ball”? Just curious.

by C'sFanDan on Feb 23, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions

I think for the most part

People are trying to stay away from nicknames for him right now… “The wrecking ball” certainly isn’t not a bad one, but after all his incidents this year, I think he and the organization just want him to be known as “Glen Davis”. More focused on his play, rather than the nickname, you know?

by Greg Payne on Feb 23, 2010 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Or we could go for a happy medium that incorporates his play

You know, something like “The guy challenging for the league lead in percentage of FGAs blocked who also broke his hand popping a buddy.”

Kinda catchy, isn’t it?

It was really boring

The whole game was… except for Ray’s block and seeing Nate for the first time. It seemed like the Celtics just REFUSED to win this game. Over and over and over… they refused to put em away. Whatever… game was a pill. A sleeping pill.

Nate didn’t have a great game, but when has the ball it feel reliable. Like… we don’t have to worry that he’ll screw it up (a la Eddie, Paul, old/bad TA, etc.) So as soon as Nate gets the system here, I think we’ll see great things from him.

by DRJ1 on Feb 23, 2010 10:52 PM EST reply actions

Not a exciting game to watch to say the least......

Flat game by the C’s as they looked not interested in playing this game.

I am really getting concerned with Babys subpar play as he is containing to play in a funk which he has been in all year.
Considering Garnett has health issues and will have off nights we need Baby to pick up the slack and step up his game.
He has got to start playing in games as well as he chews on his mouth guard…. lol .

Robinson did not impress in this game offensively or defensively, but hey it was only his first game so I guess we can cut him some slack.

Walker looked great tonight, I wonder why we do not get players like him.
Too bad Doc never gave the kid a chance to play.

David Lee sure is a nice player.. wish he was a Celtic.
Chandler of the Knicks (a guy I have been urging the C’s to get all year) also looked good tonight.

by fordescort on Feb 23, 2010 11:07 PM EST reply actions

disagree somewhat

because of the timing. I think that in three of the last 4 games, BBD has played much better. I’ve seen signs of him going back to using his bulk to create shot space and when its not there, going for the foul instead of the shot (which would be blocked) by powering up with his arms instead of leading with the ball. He also got that to work tonight. He was very effective in Friday’s game cutting to the basket to receive passes underneath from Ray off the pick.

BBD HAS the talent to be productive even without length. He just has to remember to think “Wes Unseld” and not “Kareem”.

Walker will look great in the Knick’s system. He doesn’t have to learn or play a sophisticated defense under D’Antoni. (Not that the C’s played one either in the 3rd period today …).

He’ll also have no reason to defer shooting to anybody else in the Knick’s system.

Additional thoughts on Baby...

What concerns me most about Baby is how he has not gotten back so far this year to the player he was last year..especially the player we saw in the playoffs.
I just think he has regressed as a player this year.

My biggest frustration with Baby is his big problem finishing around the rim offensively which has really been a issue for him this year.
He must have the most number of personal shots altered or blocked for a power forward in the NBA.

I think this is mainly due to the fact he is not a very lengthy or athletic power forward since he is only 6’8" (though he is listed at 6’9" that is a inflated #), has a short arm wing span is over weight and has poor jumping ability also.

To remedy this defect in Babys game I agree that he must get back to trying to carve out space (vertically) to get his defender away from him so he can get his shot off easier without it getting blocked.
This will also help him get more rebounds just like it did for Unseld & Oakley .

The funny thing is Baby did carve out space much better last year, so its puzzling why he has a problem doing so this year.

Maybe its just a mechanics thing, that he can work on and remedy.
I just hope he does so soon as we need more production from the back up power forward position (especially with KG ailing this year) if we want to make a solid run in the playoffs this year.

But just in case, Id really feel better if the C’s could acquire a long, athletic power forward as insurance through a buy out signing next month.

by fordescort on Feb 24, 2010 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

I totally agree that he regressed

largely because after getting in great shape for camp, he then got out of shape while he was injured.

But lately, this last couple of weeks I believe I see definite signs that he’s finding his way back to where he needs to be.

by TheRev72 on Feb 23, 2010 11:10 PM EST reply actions

I agree.

We are still working out the kinks. We should be there by the time the playoffs start. It was a win and so many people are treating it as a loss. Bill Walker should be able to get at least 12 points a game on this team. No defense = more offense.

by liamail on Feb 23, 2010 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Concur.

No only were they missing Paul – but the fact is that the man rotation has had basically zero minutes all year with Daniels in at SF. He simply has not played any minutes in that role with Perk, KG, Rondo & Ray before. They also haven’t even had hardly any real practice yet with Robinson. He’s expected to be a top-8 rotation guy yet he and they have no idea yet how to integrate into this team. They’ll finally get a full practice tomorrow.

Lots of kinks to shake out.

yes, Doc never played any that young talent, and the fact that none of them that he didn’t play are still in the league means absolutely nothing to some people. And the fact that Doc has a championship, Coach of the Year honors, and has complete respect of his players also means nothing. And completely disregard all those stories of athletes wanting to play for him since he knows how to deal with them and give them the respect they deserve.

I hear the Thunder just won their eighth straight. Why don’t you jump on that bandwagon for a while.

by reggie_35 on Feb 23, 2010 11:59 PM EST via mobile reply actions

They should have refunded everyone's money tonight

I had to keep switching to the Olympics to keep from falling asleep. Even Tommy was wondering whether Perk was still in Denver. Both teams were pretty pathetic and disinterested.

At least the C’s started to show some signs of becoming an actual team on the West Coast, but they have to stop the coasting.

Unfortunately they still – three years later – need a backup point guard. From Sam Cassell to Marbury to Nate Robinson. It just keeps getting worse. I’d suit up Tyronne Lue at this point.

It will be interesting to see which Celtic team shows up against the Cavaliers on Thursday. A lot of people made a big deal about beating the Lakers without Kobe, saying it was a quality win. With Pierce out, by this logic, the C’s should be able to handle Cleveland anyway. And if the Cavs win, I guess that makes it a quality win for them, right?

Well...

Considering he felt after a year and a half of Walker showing us nothing and still thinking we will rue the day we let him go, it only stands to reason one game is enough to determine Nate’s potential for this team.

by KG's Knee on Feb 24, 2010 12:37 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Blah

The win was nice. KG and Ray playing well was was nice. Even the offensive output, sans 4th quarter was nice. But man, how do we let a rag tag team like the Knicks score 106 points? This wasn’t a major setback, but you would hope that they would eventually start giving a consistent effort night in and night out, not just for the big games. They are all big games at this point in the season.

On another note: all you Bill Walker fans need some serious help. 7 points off the bench, and a couple of decent dunks does not mean you have arrived. If 7 points is a huge breakout, than good lord, some of you guys standards sure are low. Billy will never amount to much more than a 10-12 man in any rotation. He’s got athleticism, but so did Gerald Green. I forgot where is he now? Oh, that’s right, out of the league. Epic Fail!

by KG's Knee on Feb 24, 2010 12:18 AM EST via mobile reply actions

by reggie_35 on Feb 24, 2010 12:53 AM EST via mobile reply actions

This game could have been worse

As it was, it was merely boring and annoying. If Paul Pierce had played, with another of his 8 missed shots and 3-4 TOs… Cs would have actually lost.

by DRJ1 on Feb 24, 2010 2:12 AM EST reply actions

I dunno - one reason it was even close at the end was because

the C’s missed a bunch of shots and committed several TOs on several consecutive possessions.

So they are capable of playing sloppy even without Paul …

But I"m just pickin’ on ya. I agree that the way Paul was playing this last week, it would have been counter productive to have him out there. A healthy Paul, playing like he was last Fall ? That would have probably ended the game early.

by mmmmm on Feb 24, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

Ronald McDavis is certainly playing better.
Quis is fantastic (we have to sign him).
Garnett is looking more consistent.
