The Hinrich Deal

Time to check out the latest trade rumor involving Ray Allen. Now I know it's just a rumor, but what fun are trade rumors if you cannot pretend they're real for a minute?

Rumor has it, The Chicago Bulls front office has inquired

What we lose: A durable, veteran, hall of fame shooting guard who helped bring a title to Boston two years ago. His scary 3-point shot has overshadowed his reliable midrange game and driving abilities. He has one of the quickest shooting releases in the game, the unique ability to drive and score without lightening-quick speed, and one of the highest basketball IQs in the league. Despite being a 34 year old shooting guard on his 14th NBA season, Allen has missed just 12 games in the past 2 and 1/2 seasons. His only knock is that he is streaky, especially during the post season. In the end he always comes out on top, but has left Celtics fans scratching their heads after having dismal games in the playoffs.  Clearly his best days are behind him, but Ray Allen has a lot of basketball games left in him.

What we gain: A highly skilled point guard in Kirk Hinrich. He may not be dominant like Rondo or Chris Paul, but he is a solid backup, and would be terrific insurance should Rondo ever go down. He has a career 3-point shooting average of 37.8%, and has only once missed a considerable amount of games due to injury (31 games last season). Hinrich was a thorn in the Celtics' side in last years first round playoff series. He will give you everything he has on both ends of the floor every night.

It's rumored that the Celtics would also receive Tyrus Thomas in the deal. A gifted athletic forward, Thomas has been a major disappointment for the Bulls, being selected 4th overall in the 2006 draft, before All-Stars Rudy Gay, Brandon Roy, and Rajon Rondo. It's also rumored that the Celtics would throw in a bench player such as Brian Scalabrine or Tony Allen, and we all know who would be the bigger loss.

With the trade deadline looming, expect to hear more rumors regarding Ray Allen's whereabouts by then end of the month. With the team getting back on track after a rough January, don't be surprised if Ray stays in the bay state.

I always feel like, when thinking about trading Ray Allen, that sure he may be in a slump and all that, and on paper, according to recent stats, a trade with Hinrich or similar might be justified, I still feel like it would be a loss, it would be a gamble to trade him…

I'd say yes to any trade that brought us good assets. Even if we don't win now, Hingrich and Thomas as assets we can trade in the future. Ray is a depreciating asset. By summer 2010, he has lost his value to us.

A trade like this helps us in another way. Our biggest problem against teams like the Hawks is athleticism. A Tyrus thomas could play a Josh Smith, in a way that KG is no longer able to.

KG no longer has his lift or lateral mobility. KG is no longer the defensive presence he used to be. The KG of old would have let Rashard Lewis drive by him for the winning shot on the baseline. We have a 60% KG.

Hingrich can also play shooting guard.

Ray and Scal for Hingrich and Thomas. I’d do it!!

Good points

About our need for a athletic front court big with KG ailing, this is a big time weak spot that Thomas would remedy.
Lets keep in mind Thomas could be our power forward of the future after KG retires, so in addition to having a need for him this year we also have a need for him in the future.

Also good point on how Allen is a diminishing trade asset and will only diminish more if we keep him any longer, thus the urgency to trade him now when especially with his expiring contract he has some value at this time.

My only concern is can we get better deal then Hinrich and Thomas for Ray?

Only Danny knows for sure, so I hope he exhausts all options before making a trade if he does one at all..

Have entertained these threads for too long now

But have always maintained we don’t trade Ray unless he gets bought out and comes back (which he would) but with that illegal deal in place we may get less in return. Really we do have the upper hand because it is the other team that is desperate to shed salary. Hence the ability to get a Monta or igodala.

Let’s review Ray/jr/1st rounder for monta/oddly drawing a blank here, the stopper who had wrist surgery/and a conditional 2nd rounder.
Ray/scal for hinrich/Thomas
Ray for Nate/Chandler/jefferies- no thanks
Ray for igodala/Williams
Ray for nocioni/kev mart
Ray for prince/Hamilton

most or these IMO really require taking on too much salary (which is the whole point of the trade) for too much risk, none of these is a drastic upgrade or guarantee. The only way we get one of these done is if it it understood that Ray gets bought out. Then my friends there is nothing to lose. However since this would be quite frowned upon (us absolutely becoming the most hated team of all time) I would not recommend it. So in essence I would not trade Ray. As I have said, let’s see this team healthy.
Now if you want to talk about scal/Sheldon (both expiring) for tyrus Thomas then I am so down.

The dude whose name I forgot was raja bell

BAD TRADDDE

@celticspride4ever I think it’s a bad trade since we already have a back up point guard(house)+ rond had issues with hinrich . ray is way better than hinrich and we need a shooting guard in return not a pg\sg . I think it’s a BAD IDEA to trade before the offseason . Celtics have a good chemistry and they need that in order to get BANNER 18!!! STOP THE TRADE DISCUSSIONS

If start making decisions on for trades based on court talk, we wouldn't have KG or Wallace. They both fought with half the team. KG and Perk almost came to blows s few times.

House is not a PG, he is a shooting guard. His is also weak on defense.

Hingrich is a very good defender, shooter and does a great job running the offense. He can also defend and play shooting guards and small forwards.

We would also get Tyrus Thomas, who can do much of what KG is no longer able to do. KG’s hops, lateral motion and ability to rebound are no longer there.

This team has won 8 of its last 19 games. And it can’t seem to beat the best teams. If a team has athleticism even if it isn’t a great team we have trouble with them. We need more athleticisim.

What does Ray offer? He is a shooter, who can’t shoot. Whether its age, Doc playing him too many minutes or what, Ray is only shooting 34% from the 3 point line. All Ray really offers is shooting. Even Tony Allen is a better defender and driving the hoop. When Ray Allen shoots 34% from the 3 point line he is no longer really contributing.

i hate this trade.

This trade stinks. Gimme a break.
Ray wants to STAY a Celtic.
Hinrich would not help us at all.

PASS PLEASE

20 mil expiring is gonna be mighty valuable

to a team looking to get under luxury tax next years cap is expected to drop 5 to 8 mil … will be extremely hard for danny to say no to this or any other offer as good as this i dont like thomas much i dont think he gets the game but still not a bad deal for a guy who is and i hate to say this but A not gonna be here next season and B not close to what he once was or what people still think he is even today
love ray love his free throw shooting hate the 3 point shot will get us there mentality tho and with ray comes that mentality

no.

hinrich is undersized, and there would be a glaring hole at the 2. Watch the playoffs, when any of VC, Joe Johnson, SJax, Dwayne Wade walk all over us because we do not have a starting shooting guard.

by clawlin on Feb 7, 2010 2:51 AM EST reply actions

really ??

the thought of rays defense and having to guard him has them shaking in there socks / theres a hole at the 2 right now that just keeps chucking up shots / at least we have held onto tony who can bother these guys defensively and goes to the rim aggresively with some regularity
people need to come to the realization that names dont win championships … also why hasnt anybody started pointing the finger at doc ? i think ray would probably have been much more useful in a limited roll with less minutes this season with the bad ankles and all just cant get him off the court can ya doc
next time we need a shot at the end of a game ray will miss it
