Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Celts Interested in Michael Finley

Marc Spears reports:

Cs considering idea of trying to sign Finley, but offer has not been made. Veteran swingman shooter would be welcomed addition.

I'm all for this move since it seems like a no-lose situation.  However, my expectations are set at "low" because if he wasn't useful for another veteran (read "aging") contender, why will he be valuable for us?  Via ESPN:

Finley was a key member of San Antonio's 2007 championship team after leaving the Spurs' longtime rivals in Dallas but has struggled to earn playing time this season from coach Gregg Popovich.

Andrew Sharp of SBN calls the Celtics the New England Patriots of the NBA.

Here are Finley's stats on the season:

15 MPG?

That’s a lot of minutes for a guy to play that you are going to cut. I think he could give us a solid 5 minutes per game if that.

by Evantime34 on Mar 1, 2010 4:46 PM EST reply actions

MPG

must not count DNP-CDs because he had quite a lot of those

by Jeff Clark on Mar 1, 2010 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

He can shoot the 3

Which would put him ahead of every other swingman on the roster…

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Mar 1, 2010 4:48 PM EST reply actions

Well, no one else is available, so I guess Finley is OK...

…maybe he can give us 10 minutes every now and then. I would rather watch him at SF than Scal that is for sure…

by thebirdman on Mar 1, 2010 4:52 PM EST reply actions

Yeah i think you hit the nail on the head.....

We’ve been playing either scal or tony allen at the three…. quis and pierce have been out of large chunks of time and we need another guy that can take some minutes at 2 and three… ray ray has also been eating a lot of minutes for a guy his age…. Certainly finley can give us more productive minutes than those two.

by callmesir on Mar 2, 2010 1:44 AM EST up reply actions

Why not?

Don’t see anyone else out there. At a minimum, he provides another seasoned pro that can step in and give a few minutes when needs. It’s just added depth…why not?

BIGS

we need another big please that wants to rebound

by tcelt on Mar 1, 2010 4:56 PM EST reply actions

Agree we do need another big....

Tony Battie would be nice, but we also do need a big , athletic wing player to come off the bench with some size behind Pierce.

by fordescort on Mar 1, 2010 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

Hell, suit up Bill Russell… he’s hanging around most of the time anyway. Clifford Ray is just warming the pine too.

by zoso59brst on Mar 1, 2010 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

We badly need a wing who can shoot.

So Finley sounds like a perfect fit but I fear the is cooked already. If he can make some shots and be OK defensively, then let’s go for him.

by Drucci on Mar 1, 2010 4:59 PM EST reply actions

I'd rather...

Reggie Miller or Micheal Jordan… David Robinson maybe? Bill Russell actually still looks pretty good? Tommy?

artis gilmore

only if he still has those great side burns

by tommyfan on Mar 1, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions

Of all the guys who have been waived he is the best fit...

…Hughes can`t shoot and replicates TA and Daniels. We need a SF who can shoot the ball. Finley is no spring chicken but there just isn`t anyone available who is better…

by thebirdman on Mar 1, 2010 5:24 PM EST reply actions

Obviously

We’re going to try and rebuild with late season buyouts…

by BballTim on Mar 1, 2010 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

Finley turns 37 this week so he is perfect

Battie, however, is only 34, which might be a little young for this club - :)

by vinnie on Mar 1, 2010 5:39 PM EST reply actions

Good fit.

Good fit for spot minutes and end of quarters. Free throws.

by liamail on Mar 1, 2010 5:47 PM EST reply actions

Finley a Celtic...

Finally, a “youth movement”….the team`s average age will go down!!

by Title 18 on Mar 1, 2010 5:48 PM EST reply actions

he can at least play SF

for a bit while PP gets some rest ,

This year and coach combined with sheed give me the bubble guts so bad I wanna crap my brain out my ass

by reggie_35 on Mar 1, 2010 6:09 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Let’s get Bill Russell back in action, while we’re at it.

by braz on Mar 1, 2010 6:10 PM EST reply actions

Ugh... We're gonna need walkers and Denture-Grip pretty soon

Why not go after Larry Hughes? He’s not exactly “young” but he’s only 31 compared to Fin’s 36… He could def help spell some minutes…

by RJ87 on Mar 1, 2010 6:24 PM EST reply actions

Well, I wouldn't mind him

Well, I wouldn’t mind him coming in an replacing TA, if TA goes back into his,“somehow-i-forgot-how-to-play-basketball-im-just-out-here-running-around-at-1000mph-modes” at points in a game.

I mean I actually would prefer to see Michael Finley out there as “TA”, at least it would make sense as to why he is turning the ball over, and missing shots, and making bonehead mistakes"….because Michael Finley is Old…I would expect that, TA is 26-27 making those mistakes……OFTEN!

by fanofgreen on Mar 1, 2010 6:45 PM EST reply actions

Cs need a long, strong, athletic back up big wing player ..

Though Finley is long and strong at almost 37 years old is he athletic enough?

I think Danny should find some one much younger and more athletic.

by fordescort on Mar 1, 2010 7:11 PM EST reply actions

He’s a guy that we could put out there and trust that he’s not going to make stupid mistakes. You can’t teach a guy to be a winner, Finley knows how to play in the playoffs. He may not play a lot but if we need a shot to win a game i feel better about Finley then all the other 2/3’s who aren’t named Ray or Paul.

by jesse_stoneham on Mar 1, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

We get Finley, we buy back Eddie House, and we can play a second team of House, Nate, Rasheed, Finley, and either PP, Allen and Rondo and his newly discovered 3 point shot as efficient backups and we will ALL play behind the 3 point land. We wont get tired as quick and we will all have fresh legs all the time . Im assuming, of course, that Finley is not yet too old to reach the basket from 3 point land. Thats his favorite shot. We then resign Toine and Mcfarty and nobody, and I mean nobody will be able to match us.nobody can match up against those 9 (3) point shooters. My idea is as good as any Ive read so far.

by Reyquila on Mar 1, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

We are going to solve our problems with old guys that whose own team is letting go for free? No comprende.

by Reyquila on Mar 1, 2010 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Really?

I could understand picking him up if he was playing like he was a few years ago but his biggest asset was his scoring which he doesn’t do particularly well anymore.

by slamtheking on Mar 1, 2010 7:31 PM EST reply actions

I missed Lohaus; another 6:11 who only shot treis when he was with us. Worse than Rasheed. He cant be 40 yet.

by Reyquila on Mar 1, 2010 7:31 PM EST reply actions

Lohaus has to be like 50!

Probably can still shoot, not walk, but still shoot.

by liamail on Mar 2, 2010 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

I am one who always would have wanted to have Finley play for us. He was one hell of a good shooter – dont get me wrong. I prayed we could get him. Now???We have too many serious problems before we tack on another trei shooter who is not wanted any more by his own team.

by Reyquila on Mar 1, 2010 7:34 PM EST reply actions

Larry hughes would be such a smarter choice younger better more athletic but I don’t want either of them at all,

by reggie_35 on Mar 1, 2010 7:46 PM EST via mobile reply actions

work em out, worth a shot

really— this team can’t be picky at this point……they’re playing horrible, doc is coaching worse. they gotta pulse: work em out.

malcontents....the lot of you

by dasandruler on Mar 1, 2010 7:55 PM EST reply actions

Finley has shot 31% from three point range but he’s only taken a grand total of 41 attempts from behind the arc this season. He makes three more of those shots and he’s hitting 39%.

The sample sizes are too small to read anything into those stats.

by Who on Mar 1, 2010 7:58 PM EST reply actions

I thought the idea is to get younger and more athletic?

savvy veteran he might be…. but the celtics definitely aren’t lacking for veterans who have led their teams…

In Kobe we trust!

Makes no sense

How many wing players do Doc and Danny think they need?!?! Who;s going to be Docs goalie when he go small with Finn, PP, Rajon and Nate. Peg Leg Kevin, White Flage Wallace, Big Foot Perkins or Uno Babs,

Oh and how many relicss, er vets, do Doc and Danny…

CALL !!!!!!!!!!!

Eric Montross, alaa abdelnaby , vin baker, pervis ellison. this is getting out of control just fire doc please!!!!!!!!!!

by celtsfan1 on Mar 1, 2010 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Rondo's D & Interior D must get better before anything

For those asking why San Antonio let him go, they do have George Hill, Roger Mason, a healthy Ginobli ahead of him on the depth chart. Blair can play SF too. I think he could help and is better than Tony Allen on offense and BBall IQ, maybe not on D anymore.

I thought getting a strong rebounder and paint defender was and is a bigger need for this team, even before getting nate or any other G/F.

by rkls134 on Mar 1, 2010 9:32 PM EST reply actions

Wait ! How about The Chief, Artis Gilmore, ...

Aren’t we supposed to get younger? What will be the average age of the Celtics with Finley on board? I think the Celtics already have too many players who want to take 3s (and not making many of them), but not enough post players.

by getthat18now on Mar 1, 2010 9:52 PM EST reply actions

wow his stats are way down. he’s shooting 3’s like sheed

by Red2 on Mar 1, 2010 10:23 PM EST reply actions

Michael Sweetney

How about Sweetney? At least he would go down on the box, unlike Sheed. And is either one of them really in shape? :)

by VtCeltics on Mar 1, 2010 11:05 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, what happened to him

We were so close to signing him, but passed on for Hudson, then cut Hudson anyway…

by rav123 on Mar 1, 2010 11:33 PM EST up reply actions

Tony Battie

He’s a good big, and more importantly, he’d bring great chemistry to the locker room. he did in fact save Pierce’s life once, so we sorta owe him a ring, or at least a roster spot

~Aaron

by bostonceltics on Mar 1, 2010 11:26 PM EST reply actions

Sign finley!

I would even sign him if he was 40! Finley on a bad day is better than scal at the 3!
IF his minutes are at 10-20 he can be effective and other than ray and paul he would be our best shooter! and he can be used in end of game situation as a shooter (paul, ray, finley) 3 guys to guard .shooters are always welcome!
look at stackhouse everybody thought he was done but the guy at 36 is having 20-5 nights!
daniels and tony can’t space the floor like Mr. Finley.
and then this off season trade Paul and KG and do a (sign and trade) for ray, get a couple of draft picks.and prospecs.

by businessbmw on Mar 1, 2010 11:34 PM EST reply actions

Finley is a spring chicken agewise

when compared to the shooting specialist Danny Ainge was trying to woo here at the beginning of rht KG era, Reggie Miller, who was 42 at the time.

Cassell was 38 when he came here. PJ Brown was 38 too. It would be a low risk signing, and Finley is the kind of guy that a team would want in the locker room and could go to war with, assuming his game hasn’t slipped too much. I haven’t seen him enough to say for sure, but his stats are ghastly. Considering that Doc Rivers’ first big off the bench has similarly horrible stats, Finley might fit in quite nicely.

If signing Finley could assure me that I wouldn’t have to ever again see Tony Allen in a Celtics uniform follow up a good play with a bonehead one every game, sign me up.

by TripleOT on Mar 2, 2010 2:45 AM EST reply actions

no way!! Another 3P possesion eater

We have enough old people who are bored of playing season. Another one and we need old geriatric nurses to bring them from one side of the floor to the other! Thats disgusting and I hate seeing posts here that compare him with PJ Brown or Sam Cassell. Finley is a way to slow to guarding strong contenders and when Doc decides to take him on the court we will degrading our defense (and rebounding ) even more and must hope that Finley gets buckets to compensate that. Don’t like it and if ya know Finley you know also that he often struggles with his shots.
