The problem with "saving it for the playoffs"

…is that when you sink to tonight’s level, your fans will abandon you.

Vinnie, Title 18, nba-is-the-worst, et al — the field is yours. I have nothing more to say.

by DRJ1 on Mar 10, 2010 9:59 PM EST reply actions

I was never with the whole...

saving it for the playoffs theory, but even teams purportedly doing that show even a little pride. If there was something to not “trying” until the playoffs, then every team would do it, and we would have done it when we won in 2008.

by djLaysItIn on Mar 10, 2010 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

Can't beat winning teams with consistency anymore

KG comes off a double double and looks tired, PP looks tired, Ray looks a step slow, and as a team they can’t guard anybody. 2 straight nights with the opponent getting wide open threes – like Mo Williams did in the Cavs game.

The defense is gone. Window closed.

by nba is the worst on Mar 10, 2010 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

Wow.

This may be worse for Boston’s morale than losing to the Nets.

by IdahoGreen on Mar 10, 2010 10:00 PM EST reply actions

What's the record,

For a team to be outscored in regular season and still win a championship?

the few, the proud, the boston celtics

Celtics point differential

Is nowhere near what a title-winning team should have. Which makes sense. This team ain’t winning no title this year.

Memphis is a good, inconsistent, young, athletic team...

too bad they are out west coz they’d be playing in the playoffs if theyre in the East, and perhaps even a better record than the C’s if they are in the East b/c the East has got some of the worst teams in the league.
Their nucleus is good and honestly, Id rather swap their players to ours right now except for Rondo…and pehaps KG for Randolph.

"No I’m not KG. Not at all, but I’m Big Baby Glen Davis from LSU, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I’m not the Big Ticket. I’m the Ticket Stub. Don’t count the Ticket Stub out. You might need the ticket to get in the game, but you leave with the ticket stub, because you’ll never forget this game."

Sheed probably gave the best effort tonight

out of any Boston player… him and Ray maybe that’s it

by reggie35 on Mar 10, 2010 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

no help defense

and heaving outside shots. Liked the signing initially, but not loving it now.

by thxxsj on Mar 10, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

no help defense?

Hmm…. Sheed had 6 steals and 3 blocked shots.

Those steals almost all came while ‘helping’ double someone.

And he only took 3 shots from beyond the arc (made 1). He went 2-4 inside the arc and 4-5 at the free throw line. Does that qualify as ‘heaving’ in the problematic sense?

For all his ‘percieved’ problems, Sheed wasn’t on the floor when the starters decided to sleep walk their way to start the game. They were already down 20-12 by the time he even came in the game.

by mmmmm on Mar 10, 2010 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

No question, Sheed was one of the best Celtics out there tonight

I just wish that meant something.

P.S. Fin looked good too, in limited minutes. Should get more burn going forward.

by DRJ1 on Mar 10, 2010 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Sheed did give a good effort tonight. I’m usually quick to criticize him, so I’ll give him credit when it’s due.

You know

It’d be cool if Rasheed would give a good effort when everyone else did haha. When everyone else stinks, he comes to life. Ridiculous.

by Greg Payne on Mar 10, 2010 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

Disgraceful performance period

The C’s showed no life or will to win this game at all.

The big 3 did zip along with Rondo and Perk

Off the bench aside from Rasheed showing some life everybody else was horrible.
Robinson and Baby struggled and Daniels was atrocious.

The C’s lack of motivation to want to win games is unbelievable.

Rondo woulda had 10 or more assist had the people he passed to made shots.

and the steals are difficult to come by when opposing PG know how to take care of the ball, Conley and M. Williams are crafty PG, they also got very lucky most of their jumpers are swiiish.

True

It might be poetic justice, though, that most on this blog and in the media were calling to trade Ray, who has been our lone bright spot since the break. AI or Kmart weren’t saving this team (this year anyway).

Rotations

Team is such a mess, its hard to imagine easy fixes, but the rotations boggle the mind. Does any team besides the Celtics put an entirely new second team on the floor? 10 minutes in, Doc pulls the Starters (good or bad, makes no difference), by the 2nd gets has a whole new lineup out there. Starting 5 comes back in, cold and flat. 2nd half, same deal. having Fin – one more option. Pick your best nine, Doc, and go.

by Tenacious D on Mar 10, 2010 10:34 PM EST reply actions

In THIS game - considering how much the starters stunk

that wasn’t the worse thing for Doc to do.

And the truth is, until Daniels came back, Doc almost NEVER did full substitution. He almost always had Ray and sometimes Paul as the transition starter playing with the 2nd team.

by mmmmm on Mar 10, 2010 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Yup...Keep gaining and pile up those L's

Its just the norm now isn’t it?…The C’s entice us with a nice 3 game run, then piles up consecutive Losses its just maddeningly inconsistent now.

We suck so bad, we could win a big game against the Cavs but lose by 20 or more to the Nets the next game, that is how bad this this team has become, gone are the days when you look at the calendar and count automatically the WINS that we can have.

In a span of one yr, we all have witness the sudden senile decline in the plays of PP, KG , Perk and even Ray Allen…wow.

Perk's probably an anomaly

But the first two months of this year are probably his ceiling.

KG is what he is now. There is no “return to 100%” where he becomes the player he was in November 08. Or June 08. Or before that.

Pierce seems like he’ll rebound as time goes on. But clearly, he’s lost something. This is the first year of his career where he has CLEARLY taken a step back. It won’t be the last time that happens.

Not so worried about Ray. But he’s the fourth most important guy on this team.

by TheOutletPass on Mar 10, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

the possible benefit of this loss at home

is forcing doc to coach and make decisions that may not be popular—- such as no more big three, but big 5 team basketball. Change the starting line up poppovich style. He’s waiting for a “i told u so, gotta be patient” moment" that may never come.

You were absolutely right, Brickowski!

You posted after last night’s game that tonight was gonna be bad. I said I didn’t think it would be. Unfortunately, you were right, I was wrong. I’m sooo tired of listening to KG say they have to get better and they will. When??? I really don’t understand what’s wrong with them. I know they are not THIS bad! I think Tommy post-game may have been on to something. He talked about how Doc’s defensive schemes require a huge amount of effort, and he questioned whether this team was physically capable of exerting that effort. Maybe he’s right. Maybe they’re just not.

PP is suckingly bad right now...

only 10 months born ahead of Kobe but Bryant still got game till perhaps he is 36 or something… with PP, we get lucky if we can even squeeze a good yr out of him next yr.

KG on the other hand has become the albatross contract no team would to trade for…why would they for a guy that does not even play in the post anymore.

"No I’m not KG. Not at all, but I’m Big Baby Glen Davis from LSU, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I’m not the Big Ticket. I’m the Ticket Stub. Don’t count the Ticket Stub out. You might need the ticket to get in the game, but you leave with the ticket stub, because you’ll never forget this game."

the future....

Wow! What an ass kicking tonight. We are so cooked! Pierce looks very old now. What would our cap situation be if Pierce opts out and he and Ray are off the books? Paul might think he could get more money this summer after LeBron, Wade, etc. get theirs than in 2012 after a strike season and a new CBA. Might be our only hope unless Danny is willing to wait until KG’s off the books then he can open the checkbook.

by celty86 on Mar 10, 2010 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Off target

PP is a free agent next summer if he doesn’t opt out. And there’s no WAY he’s waiting till 2012 when he’s two years older. He’ll probably play out his option year and resign for shorter money/years with Boston next summer.

Either way, the future for this team won’t happen until after KG is off the books.

What game have you been watching?

The past two weeks we have seen Perkins outplayed by every decent center tonight is no exception.

While Rondo is forcing his passes and not fronting his player. He gets beaten 9 out of 10 times going around picks. I’m tired of hearing about his steals…..he causes the frontline players to have foul or leave their players.

I’m a 50+ fan of the Celtics and I concur with PACF….this is totally dissapointing.

I resent those who say we should not trade paul, Kg, Ray. this offseason!
I know they can still have good games and should retire celtics but im not risking being the nets for 3 years just to be nice to paul, kevin, and ray.
Danny must trade all 3 if he can get anything good in return, i dont know why rondo sometimes does not show up during games , if its a attitude problem or if its a motivational problem or if he is tired of watching KG,PP having a hard time just running.
there are 3 cheap free agents this summer: TRAVIS OUTLAW, Dorell Wright, and Antoine Wright… danny has to sign at least 2 of them and start rebuilding again. the plan was good 3 years ago but we traded jefferson for only 1 good garnett year not 5.
Please danny just pull the band-aid hard dont peel it slow cause it hurts more.

wow

They sucked so bad. Can’t wait for management to blow it up.

by Ragetti on Mar 10, 2010 11:23 PM EST via mobile reply actions

i feel bad for the season ticket holders. they deserve better for what they pay. if these guys don’t turn it around, this is it for doc. i like him but i won’t miss him. it is way more than age and injuries. they have the big d, ie doubt. doc has robinson thinking pass and he is lost. pp is thinking drive and he is lost. rondo is thinking rest on d and he is lost. who the heck knows what perk is thinking but he is lost. kg is probably thinking all the right things but he just can’t do them like he used to. ray is probably thinking about what just happened to uconn and calhoun and he is lost. poor finley. he thought he was coming to a contender and after watching these guys, he is lost. sheed needs to lose, a few pounds that is. oh well, i can at least turn off the set.

You guys should take a breath and exhale

Deep breath, exhale, repeat as necessary.
Celtics are still I believe the top (or very close) defensive teams in the entire league. Paul Pierce just came off of multiple injuries, Daniels just came back from injuries, the rotation and roles have changed and the team is in adjustment phase. By playoff time, would anyone else in the league want to play the Celtics? No. Because this team can beat anyone in a series. It’s always darkest before the dawn, or some sentimental crap, you think Garnett won’t get these boys fired up come playoff time?

Everyone wants to play the C's in the playoffs

Bucks fans and Raptors fans already talking about it.

LOL@ everyone talking about trading PP, KG and Ray

And talking about next season. This season is far from over. Listen, when this team gets on a roll again come playoff time, please don’t try and hop back on the bandwagon.

Mauled

It just breaks your heart to see this carnage….I’ve been a huge and loyal fan
for over 30 years, this is one of the worst efforts I’ve ever seen. How can I explain
to my 8-yr. old son (a big fan at his early age), when he asked me a while ago: “Why are they paid too much money for this? The big three are paid $52 million this year
for this?”

by Vince_frmthePhils on Mar 10, 2010 11:39 PM EST reply actions

Outlet....

the reasoning is that say Paul stays put next year and collects his 21 mil. Then he misses a year (along with everyone else) because of the strike, then resigns but with tighter contract parameters, due to the new CBA, for say 3 years and 30 mil. So that’s a total of 51 million over 4, really 5 full years. If, on the other hand, he opts out this summer and hits the mother load and finds a team that misses out on LBJ, Wade, Bosh etc., and can offer him 5 years and 75 million, maybe more. That would be almost 25 million more in total. Is it possible Paul and his representation would be enticed by that scenario? Just passing on what I read. Makes some sense. Ainge will probably make sure he stays a Celtic for life though.

by celty86 on Mar 10, 2010 11:39 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn’t give Pierce the veterans’ minimum two years from now. By that time, he’ll be Chuck Finley.

by Brickowski on Mar 10, 2010 11:42 PM EST reply actions

Slugger

I’ve never been off the bandwagon. I was on it when we sucked. Just interesting to see how Ainge will try to work the future. Cover all the bases. No matter what happens this year there will always be a next year. The future is coming.

Nets are in better shape for the future :-)

You be right but it only takes one team to take a stupid pill to make the offer. So many teams have planned for this summer that when they miss out on the big fish they may very well panic and look to someone to buy.

by celty86 on Mar 10, 2010 11:46 PM EST reply actions

And you think PP will opt out...

…based on this longshot chance? And leave the Celtics to do it?

It’s not happening on the eve of a restrictive new CBA. It’s just not.

by TheOutletPass on Mar 10, 2010 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

Not Looking for Big Fish

DLee’s gonna be lookin for a big contract…so I hope the Nets go for Scola, draft Turner (Paul Pierce/ Penny Hardaway hybrid) , and sign Mike Miller for some outside shooting. I think they’re gonna be smart about not overpaying for talent like the Pistons did last summer.

What do u guys think the Celtics are gonna do this summer as far as renewing contracts and dropping big names??

Is nate gonna make it for next year??

by NJQuestCat on Mar 10, 2010 11:49 PM EST up reply actions

I WAS AT THE GAME and COULD TELL

this team didn’t care and decided not to show up at all. It all started when a Griz player had his shot blocked (by Sheed I think) and the ball ended up rolling out of his hands. The ball then was coming right at Rondo’s feet. (And I was thinking, “Yes! A Turn over that could potentially lead to a 20-6 run for the C’s!”)

BUT THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN!! If Rondo wanted to he could have gotten that rolling ball. But instead, he watched the Grizz player grab it before it went out of bounds which then resulted in a second chance point for them.

That play right there is what told me that the C’s didn’t care anymore. The effort was just atrocious. The mood in the garden was just sour. Couldn’t even stay for the whole game.

by Mizzy21390 on Mar 10, 2010 11:46 PM EST reply actions

I saw that play…Rondo should have dived for that ball up…it was like slow motion.

by NJQuestCat on Mar 10, 2010 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

I remember it too

The game was already out of reach at that point. Can’t blame Rondo for giving up by then.

by DRJ1 on Mar 10, 2010 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

i’m not sure exactly when it was…but wasnt it the 2nd quarter when it happend??

by NJQuestCat on Mar 10, 2010 11:55 PM EST up reply actions

I think it was sometime in the 3rd also...

Its sad that a single play can summarize how horrible the C’s played tonight. ’Im so used to seeing these players hustle and bustle on the floor, running after a loose ball, fighting for a jump ball, getting defensive AND offensive rebounds. But there was none of that for a while now…

The frustration and embarrassment is just too much. And its hard because its like they see what they are doing wrong, and REALLY want to fix it, but something that is out of their hands is stopping them from doing so. Wish I could just go into the locker room and yell at them, and explain my feelings.

But then again, I doubt they’d listen to a girl and what she had to say… Sometimes I feel like being the coach, instead of Doc. SERIOUSLY!

by Mizzy21390 on Mar 11, 2010 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

No I don’t think he will opt out. Only stating an option. Money is always an option. He will retire a Celtic.

by celty86 on Mar 10, 2010 11:54 PM EST reply actions

Can we rescind the trade with the Knicks?

At least Eddie House was a Celtic with some fire and pride. And it would be nice to have Bill Walker to guard some of the athletic wings from time to time because Daniels and Tony Allen sure cannot. Oh yeah, Rivers would have to play him.

Positives: BBD hit perhaps his first 15-footer of the season. Finley probably should be 6th man with the lack of talent on the rest of the bench. Doc Rivers again gets points for being a great motivator – his kid is lighting it up and being recruited all over the country.

spared

Went out to dinner with my wife and some friends and a good samaritan buddy sent me a text telling me to delete the game from my DVR. Good counsel, from what I’m reading here. This is a real bummer-my son is 6, has all sorts of Cs gear and loves the team but this season isn’t giving us much to cheer about right now.

by McHaleinthepost on Mar 11, 2010 12:04 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Chances?

1st Round: Lucky to win in 6, can win in 7
2nd Round: Pfffftttt!! Early exit, most likely in 6, why? No home court
                       edge at this early stage.
Unbelievable!!! A team with this much talent & savvy can do more than this…
Nobody really knows what’s happening WITHIN the team, we can only
guess. One thing’s for sure, we can’t see the effort or professionalism from
this highly-paid bunch of athletes who are getting paid to play the game
they love?!?!

In trying to find something positive to take away from tonight

…I’ve come up with this:

Tonight was the bottom. Not the Nets game, as many believed. From this deep darkness, there is only one way to go, and that’s upward, toward the light.

They did not come to this game lazy and unwilling. I believe they tried in the beginning to play well. But the Cs’ shots weren’t falling, and the Griz hit a few tough ones (including one lucky ridiculous 3 that went off the glass.) And that’s when they just stopped trying, and kinda gave up. That includes pretty much everybody except Ray and Sheed (of all people).

But this kind of total carnage is going to stick in their craw. They will not soon forget the sound and feeling of being booed off the court in their own Garden. Imagine that… our Cs were BOOED OFF THE COURT BY THEIR OWN FANS. The same fans who would, normally, do ANYTHING to support their team. That’s gotta hurt. And that pain will, hopefully, stay with them the next time they are tempted to throw in the towel.

If anything can awaken these guys, tonight will. Now we must hope that the awakening will be complete by the time the first playoff game begins.

Oh, and one more thing: Perk’s gotta sit for a while. And see a shrink. Something’s not right in that boy’s head.

by DRJ1 on Mar 11, 2010 12:09 AM EST reply actions

Pathologically Positive

You really are :+)

I watched KG at the post-game tonight, and he and PP said all the same things they keep saying. Intellectually, they know what needs to be done. But like the Nets post-game, that awareness hasn’t led to any sustained improvement. I just don’t see any reason to think tonight’s anymore of a turning point than any of the second half collapses or first quarter no-shows we’ve seen since Xmas day. I don’t like being this pessimistic but this team has taught me again and again, that it’s willing to find a new bottom every couple weeks.

by TheOutletPass on Mar 11, 2010 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

And that's the other side of the coin

…Believe me…. it wasn’t easy finding something positive to say about tonight.

perk

was always over rated. now that the the other pieces are weakening, so is he. simple. I watched a lot of the lakers who played around the shaq-kobe tandem disappear into quiet mediocrity on other teams.
you may call me a hater, but i never saw perk as the kind of player that could go assert himself on an average team.
he travels incessantly(i cant wait until they start calling him on that) and the nation (and more importantly the refs) are tired of his hands in the air post no call sulking. yawn

winning isn't everything.

why does everything have to be about winning anyway
we got some cool personalities on this team.
it’s like a running sitcom.

by Snowball on Mar 11, 2010 1:06 AM EST reply actions

I sense sarcasm...

But just wanted to say in response to that, that what would make us fans not as mad, or mad at all would be if there was effort and determination in these games that we lose. What makes us so mad is not mainly that they’re not winning, but that they’re not winning because they quit.

Me? I'm just a girl who loves the Celtics...

by Mizzy21390 on Mar 11, 2010 2:39 AM EST up reply actions

You're right. Winning isn't everything ..

I also expect effort, hears and a will to play thru tough times from these millionares, but I can hardly find any of these in this team anymore. That’s why I am damn disappointed.

If this is a sitcom, I am not laughing.
