Practice Over Games?
Doc Rivers talkin’ practice . . . over games
Rivers said he’d consider holding his veterans, both of whom are on the mend from injuries, out of games so they’re able to log practice time down the stretch.
"We have to have them playing at their peak (when the playoffs start). Whatever we have to do that, we have to do it," Rivers said before the C’s 122-103 win against the Pacers last night. "If that means working them more in practices and maybe them missing games - whatever it takes, that’s what we have to do and that’s what we’re going to do."
Garnett and Pierce didn’t exactly welcome the idea with open arms.
Personally I think the idea has merit. All year we've heard about how Doc has not been careful with not pushing his players too hard in practice, but that might be a big reason why they seem so out of sync so often. Maybe they do need some more coaching so they can work the finer points under supervision.
What is the drawback? Losing a few games? Doing that already. We all know the playoffs are the most important thing and this would be one more acknowledgement of that fact.

Give KG and Pierce some games off here and there. Ray always seems to be fresh but maybe cut his minutes and get healthy for the playoffs. I’ve be saying this for a month, we need KG at his peak.
Play Baby more (he needs some more burn because his overall game is slacking big time).
Play Marquise Daniels more (we can still win games with his talent).
Let Rondo conduct business as usual but encourage him to shoot the open J.
Agree with Doc
HCA no longer matters (we probably aren’t gonna have it past 1st round anyway). So seeding no longer matters. Who we face doesn’t matter – they’re all going to be tough. If this team plays correctly, they can beat anybody. If they don’t, they can’t beat anybody. The only important thing now is to be as close to perfect as possible when the playoffs begin. Whatever it takes. Doc’s 100% right. (Wow… amazing.)
better yet
they should just watch films about basketball. we don’t want to risk them getting hurt in practice… hmmm maybe films about basketball might work their cardiovascular system too hard. they should just read the funny pages because that’s where this idea belongs. give me a break.
how many times have we seen a guy who’s been practicing for weeks come into an nba game and look completely lost because the pace of a real game is so much different than practice? why can’t they practice and play games? isn’t that their job?
sometimes i think doc just likes to say stuff. i hope that’s what this is.
touche
your point is more than fair as well.
I personally think this whole slum is in the head, is motivational, and keeping them out wont help, unless you are doing it as motivation…
but at this point whatever the team thinks it should do, I will back so long as they never play like that again in the garden

+1 a thousand times
Honestly, this might be the most ridiculous idea I have heard/read in ages.
Makes me wonder how hurt KG and PP really are
No matter what the party line has been.

I think you may have missed the entirety of what Doc said
…probably because it was not all included in the quote. He said he wanted to do “conditioning work” with the players, not just straight-up practice. And then he said that if doing heavy conditioning one day means that the player can’t play the next, he’d be ok with that.
Every other game
I say that PP and KG should take every other game off till the playoffs.
Thus, institute a mandatory 3 day rest between games for regeneration. That’s a good way to stay fresh. For practice, they should only do basic drills, etc.
The other way is to make ’em come off the bench for Finley & Wallace/BBD and thus, limit their outings to < 18 min per game.
except for maybe allan iverson, you tend to play like you practice. if you dog it in practice you will dog it in the game. too much time off has given this team the ticket to take time off in games. yes it’s an old and injured team that might need rest, but the fans who pay big bucks for seats deserve a full effort every time.
Wait a minute
What about all the posts here about how important it is for the team to play together for a good stretch. The importance of establishing the chemistry, establishing the rotations, getting everyone comfortable with each other for the playoffs. This is one of the main reasons we have seen posted here as to why the team just can’t get into a solid winning streak. So now, they are going to sit guys during games and run them hard in practice. Seems to me that goes against what many of us believe is required — the whole team playing together for a good stretch of basketball leading up to the playoffs.
And, from a season ticketholder point of view, it is just one more slap in the face. Sure, I’ll renew for thousands of dollars next year to first watch a team that is bored and unmotivated, and then second to watch a team that is going to rest its stars in games so they can practice harder. I’m getting a headache.
The doc rivers show should be cancelled due to poor ratings
This is a head scratcher. OK, so you can’t practice as much as you want. So what?! These guys are getting the big bucks to perform and win games – even in the regular season. Ask someone who pays a lot of money for their tickets if they want to see the stars sit. Maybe they should forfeit the games and let the season ticket holders watch them practice!?
Seems like a lame excuse to me. This is a veteran team. Do your job.
Well, atleast he's trying to make changes...
and not just sitting around letting us stay in a funk without doing anything about it. I’m also still confused and skeptical about this new thing of sitting them, and working them hard in practice till the playoffs, but the fact that Doc is really trying to change things around, and try to make a difference, makes me feel a little bit better, than if he was to just say, “We’ll play out of our funk into the playoffs..”
Me? I'm just a girl who loves the Celtics...
Let's be honest here
is this not just a way of saying that they rushed these guys back from injuries too quickly??? if they had taken the time in January to get these guys conditioned, the C’s would have lost some games then but they would have been back in shape earlier.
instead the C’s brought them back figuring they could get into shape on the fly. the result was two-fold. the team dropped games consistently in January because their best two players were playing at 70% and then they continued to drop games in February and March b/c their two best players were not in playing condition yet.
seems like they but the cart before the horse. i don’t know who makes these decisions but it seems like Doc & DA both dropped the ball on this one.
Play Bill Walker more
Oh, that’s right, he’s putting up 20+ for the Knicks now. You know Bill, Doc, the guy who is only 22 and scheduled to make cheap money for the next couple years. All young guys are not Patrick O’Bryant busts and they need to be invested in (playing time, game situation mistake making without quick hook) as much as your veterans need to be rested.
Did it ever come out that Bill Walker had 3 pt shooting range? Not in Boston. I’m glad to have Nate but the Knicks had to get rid of him. We threw Walker in and I think the Knicks are finding a player. Danny trades the assets, Doc develops them. We are never going to say about a series “We got that one thanks to Doc”. But the coach can blow one with his substitutions and so at this point, as the Tuna would say, its his groceries and his meal to cook. Just hope Doc is up to it.
