Celtics Handle Knicks on St. Patrick's Day
The final score of this one, 109-97, is slightly misleading, as the Celtics basically had this one in the bag at halftime.
- Paul Pierce picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter, but came back in a rather ferocious fashion, scoring 29 points in the second and third quarters (24 minutes total).
- 12 rebounds for Kendrick Perkins and 12 assists for Rajon Rondo.
- C's hit the glass hard as a team - 45 boards total.
- Kevin Garnett chipped in 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. He continues to look good from a physical standpoint. Nice to see him and his fellow starters get some rest in the fourth quarter.
- Old friend Bill Walker scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting. Still wishing Billy nothing but the best.
- Tough shooting night for Michael Finley (1-9 from the field), but he dished out five assists to make up for it.
- Three straight home wins for the Celtics against subpar teams...But they've certainly taken care of business against them.

how in the hell did we let bill walker go???
did u see that dunk???… i hope the sarcasm is clear in this post
Haha good thing you clarified
Sarcasm via electronic communication typically doesn’t translate correctly.
this was the kind of game they played in 2008
aggressive offense, tough D, hitting the boards, getting up early, starters rest, Gino!!

KG WAS SUPER GREAT TONIGHT!!!!
24 points 4 rebs 4 assists in 24 minutes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLAYER OF THE GAME
IF THE DOC RIVERS MAKES MORE PLAYS FOR GARNETT THEY’RE WINNING BANNER !* THIS YEAR !!!
NOTICE HOW EVERY TIME KG SHOOTS AT LEAST 9 SHOTS THEY WIN THE GAME

i hope ur drunk...
because ur the same guy who cries the season is over after losses and now they beat the knicks and their on the way to the championship…. doesnt really add up!
Same thing in 2008
KG needs to get more shots, especially in the paint. There were plenty of games where they didn’t go to him enough and exploit the match up. Same thing this year. I still say that if he’s playing D like he can and hitting the glass, we are tough to beat.

KG DEFINITELY NEEDS TO GET MORE SHOTS

kg is pickin his spots, building more confidence, playing within himself and the O--
I just assume let him keep doin his thing, and not press and get injured.

9-11, plus 4 assists
…and 4-4 FTs. I’d say he’s doing just fine. Great, actually.
when did I say our season is over !?
it probably happened once when I was really pissed (nets game) other than that I don’t remember saying their season is over WTF

Nice win again....
But then again it was just the Knicks so lets keep it in perspective.
They team really worked on the defense tonight which was nice to see.
KG looked really good also.
It was nice to see Walker tonight.
Wish he was still a Celtic…maybe Danny will resign him in the off season.
I like the idea of resigning WALKER .

Yea, we are not getting any younger...
At best maybe he can develop into a player for us or into a future trade chip at worst we cut him again.
Agree
Walker was meh tonight. Jury’s still out on him.
Oh really?
What about those 20+ night? And the team-leading night? Can’t say the numbers tell the story. He has shown real potential. Jury’s still out re how far he will go.
guys go look at the scores of the games he put up the numbers.. and then look at the score of the close games
he is putting up numbers in garbage time and has done NOTHING in close games
jb--- did you watch all those games?
’cause if not… how do you know this?
Did you watch HIS games?
And WITNESS Billy getting the majority of his points in garbage time, in the games where he led, or almost led, the Knicks in scoring? That’s the specific question which would make your point. Otherwise, you are deducing something from the data that the numbers really don’t show (because they don’t tell you when garbage time starts and ends).
Oh first it was....
he could not play period …now its he only does so in garbage time.
He can never win with some.
Well give him some time and maybe he will work his way up to playing well in all games ..lol.
no im still saying he cant play period...
thats my whole argument
Oh I thought..
when you said above he is putting up numbers in garbage time, you were giving him some credit for good play.
Now that you are clarifying that is not what you meant and you are clearly saying he sucks outright…
I guess what I said above (Walker…“can not win with some”) is even more fair to say.
jb - read this
… and see the video too… posted by somebody who did see every game Billy has played.
http://www.emptythebench.com/2010/03/04/bill-walker-new-york-knicks/
didnt he just prove my point....
the games he mentions are blowout games… no mention of how hes gotten benched in crunch time… for a rookie by the way
But you keep saying he's no good
None of this proves he’s no good. He might be, he might not. He has shown POTENTIAL. He’s got game (look at the video in that last link… the guy’s super-athletic). I don’t see how you can say he’s “less than zero”, etc. What do you have against Bill Walker anyway?? I don’t know… I wish him well.
If you can run the high screen roll, too,
you’re probably a lock for a roster spot, jb.

The link provides...
some proof (from play in recent games) and optimism that Walker just yet might be a player if given some time to develop.
Time and a fair shake is something you may not want to give Walker, but it is something I and others want to give him just to be fair to him.
If Bill Walker ever becomes more than an 8th man in this league
On a real team, not the Knicks, I will be shocked. He plays absolutely no defense — NONE.
the good thing to see with both walker and giddens is that they looked much more comfortable on the court and they showed some offensive skills.
I won’t throw them under the bus for lack of defense. no one on that team played any. obviously defense was an afterthought in the game plan.
by slamtheking on Mar 17, 2010 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Agree...
Also Walker is still a rookie and can learn to play defense with more playing time.
Again time is the key here which we must give him.
I think ford means
…that he’s EFFECTIVELY a rookie. For all intents and purposes. Because he got so little PT in his rookie year in Boston.
well theres a difference...
rondo didnt play much as a rookie and then his second year, he was a starting pg for the world champions… thats what happens when ur talented.. and nobody was calling a rondo a rookie in his second year
Ok, now you've lost some credibility
Rondo played in 78 games in his rookie year (06-07)
… an average of 23.5 minutes per game
… a total of 1,830 minutes for the season
Walker played in 29 games in his rookie year (06-07)
… an average of 7.4 minutes per game
… a total of 215 minutes for the season
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/rajon_rondo/career_stats.html
You wanna try again?
but the expectatios ratio is kind of what im talking about....
the jump to a starting pg on a championship caliber team balances off the minutes between walker and rondo….
walker should flourish in the knicks system and is averaging 9 points a game while playing the worst defense possible….
another reason walker didnt see more minutes is because hes injury prone..
im getting sick of this argument
you're getting sick of it
…probably because it’s so MEANINGLESS. It’ll be what it’ll be with Billy. And it doesn’t make ANY difference to us. Bottom line.
Hey!
Does anyone know if Bill Walker played tonight? :+)

All smiles
If the Celtics can get the same kind of results in the coming road trip, then they have surely turned the corner and once again is for real.
KG looked awful good
Media (and bloggers) are still saying KG’s draggin that, draggin this, not the old KG, bla bla bla. I don’t see it. I could not tell the difference between tonight’s KG and the old, 100% 2007-08 KG. Same energy, same movement, same hops, great shooting. He might still go downhill… but I doubt it. Looks to me like KG’s all the way back. As close to 100% as we could hope for.
I could tell the diff from the old kg--
and I definitely don’t think he’s cooked or physically done. I’d say he’s….70%. Playing extremely intelligent ball considering his limitations: He’s not doin that post up quick turn around in the paint thats one of his— bread n butter u can’t stop it moves— . thats a power move, when you see that, he’s bullying people. He’s also still learning/perfecting jumping, landing, and falling. He’s more resilient now as u saw with that dunk where he fell down to reduce the impact of the landing. very controlled fall like they teach you. bottom line: I think he’ll be close to his old self at some point, but even at this level he can be very effective.

KG's leg
He deliberately lands on his good leg when he pulls down a rebound. Clearly, he’s not fully back to where he was, in his own mind.

Just One Thing...
MORE SHELDEN!!!!
And Less BigBaby (Too Short) and Sheed (Too Old)
Agree that more Shelden ....
would be nice especially on nights when Baby and Sheed struggle.
He can be a big help for us as a banger as we enter the playoffs.
His 6 fouls also will come in handy.
if glen dosesnt knock down that jay
then you might as well put shelden in because of his finishing instinct. I would interchange them and make them compete…..glens hungry, sheldens starving—

Montreal
Great point about KG!!! You are right as he was absolutely fantastic and looks back to his old (no pun intended) self.
Interesting about Paul
He looked pretty tentative, and kinda bad in the short PT he had early on. Then in Q3, as he warmed up and and hit a few, he got better and better, and started looking close to the old Paul.
Maybe… just maybe, and hopefully… this was all a confidence thing with him? Never physical? Don’t know. But he took a step up tonight.
Maybe older players take longer to warm up.
Wonder if the team still hold shoot around in the morning of game days. My impression is they shoot better in games when they have shoot aroun in the morning.

Get REAL, DRJ1
It was all about HEALTH with Paul. He does not have a confidence problem/he is a veteran NBA player not to mention captain of the team.
I don't know
He didn’t suddenly get HEALTHIER in Q3 vs. Q1, right? Which is what points to confidence. Maybe. I really don’t know. Just good to see him taking a step in the right direction.
agree--no confidence issue with PP
matter of fact, I give paul credit for making an adjustment—be it late in the season—to stop forcing the iso when he can’t get seperation…..and pick his spots in games. thats a captain move. He could get a trillion shots up if he wanted to.

Didn't like Perk's
…2 thoughtless throw-away TOs. Didn’t like the way he missed a couple of bunnies from 0 feet. But he rebounded well. Can’t say he really improved tonight.
I didn't think so
His good rebounding sorta made up for his lousy care of the ball and the missed bunnies.
david lee did nothing against perk.. he put all his numbers up aganist baby and sheed...
i would think shutting down their best player is pretty important
Hmm... I didn't notice that
…If so, good for Perk. If he stops giving the rock away, and makes his 0-foot bunnies, I’ll be very happy.
IT'S those Jerseys!!! lol
Remember what those jersey’s did for us back in 2008, when we beat that Texas Triangle, around this same time of the year, with those jerseys, if I remember correctly…
Overall good game, I won’t say its because we played the Knicks, that we won, because frankly, any team we beat with blowouts, or anything close to it right now is a good thing… We’re improving in our rebounds, and everyone is playing their role like they’re supposed to…
Me? I'm just a girl who loves the Celtics...
I'd like to see Boston pull out an alternate jersey
like Dallas or Portland. I know part of great tradition of Boston is that we are one of like two teams that has barely changed our jerseys for the entire existence of the franchise. But I don’t see any harm in having an alternate to wear for 6 or 7 games during the season with something totally different. Personally, my favorite jersey in the league is the NOLA Mardi Gras jerseys.
by KY Celts fan on Mar 18, 2010 2:52 AM EDT up reply actions
Uh... Hello!
We do have an alternate jersey. It’s the green one with “BOSTON”, not “CELTICS”, in black letters. The shorts have black down the sides as well. They actually wear this qutie often, far more than I care for in fact.
yea, but it's still basically the same
like the St. Pat’s one. They just changed the colors a little bit. I’m talking about a completely different design all together.

Good to see them destroy the dregs -- a positive sign
Just got in from the game and the Celtics have done what they had to in three straight games against really bad teams. Both Pierce and KG looked great tonight, while Perkins was better than he has been and Rondo was steady. As for the bench, I still am troubled by Sheed and by the fact that Glen Davis continues to struggle to make anything around the rim and was blocked at least three times tonight. I love the guy’s hustle though. Now let’s see what they do against much tougher teams on the road. They did the wave again tonight at the Garden — UGH!
Blowout
There were a whole bunch of ways to underperform in this game but the C’s did what they were supposed to do – crush the D-League style bball of the Knicks. Bonus that PP and KG both got a bunch of easy scores and looked confident and strong out there. PP in particular looked like he didn’t want to come out of the game in the third quarter. Good for his head to ring up 29.
by TheOutletPass on Mar 17, 2010 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions
wow
perkins is back???? he had 2 block and 9 points wow ok he finally decided to rebound but did anyone look at david lees stats? perk was dominated lee was the only one that scored hahahahaha perk and doc are useless we just need the big 4 to play healthy and with 100% effort and we can beat anybody geeze!!!!!!!
did u watch the game?
because he got those stats off baby and sheed not perk!
Perk
Made some mistakes tonight (couple turnovers like a few other guys) but looked focused and played more within himself. That’s the key – realizing he should be shooting for 10-10 with good D. Not trying to score 15-20 points and sulking when he doesn’t get touches.
by TheOutletPass on Mar 18, 2010 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions
Perk was better
But not yet “very good.” The two thrown-away TOs, and the missed bunnies… he’s gotta focus enough not to make those stupid mistakes, and he’ll be there.
But the only guy I’ve worried about of late is Paul. He took a step up tonight, and that’s a great sign.
perfect
classic doc the big 4 play awesome so perk is good haha wow im telling u. take perk off this team and u wouldnt even notice throw williams in and we would probably play better
run-on
this is a runon sentence about great of a player perk is he makes the defense so much better and he really played well tonight against david lee making him take 21 shots to get his 27 points which really is a bad percentage when you think about it im gald we have this guy on our team and think him and rondo are two good builiding blocks for the future what a job by perk i hope u enjoyed my run on paragraph
i can read it just fine
the only part that bothers me is when we play a team with a good center perk gets burned and practically gets no blocked shots
could have been better (or worse, depending on your pov)
you had 2 unnecessary "and"s in there…. it’s more confusing without them (and that’s the goal).
The Rockets
I like the Celtics’ chance against the Rockets. Without Yao, the Rockets don’t have a decent center in the middle. That should open things up for our bigs.
Against Dallas is a different story. It will be the 2nd of a back-to-back and Dirk can light it up on anyone.
Don't let Chuck Hayes fool you
He’s very small for a center (6’6"). But he knows how to body up and keep people out of the paint. If he was so easy to get around, he would have been removed from the starting line-up a long time ago. Players we need to watch out for against the Rockets: Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola.
by KY Celts fan on Mar 18, 2010 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions
Shocking correlation...
Celtics won the rebounding battle…and won the game!
Amazing how often that happens in basketball!
Celtics are a defense-first team
Good D = more defensive rebounds to be had. Since the defensive team always gets the lion’s share of def. rebounds, it will usually be true that the Cs have the highest rebound total when they win.
by DRJ1 on Mar 18, 2010 10:31 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Great win last night and the recent blowouts are fun and a long time coming. We cannot ignore that the blowouts were against bad teams. So, what I glean from this is that these games are perfect for us to get our sets down, our movement, our confidence and rhythm. It also gives us some momentum heading into the playoffs.
These next 3 games on the road will be interesting to watch to see if this team can maintain that momentum. I would love to see 3 wins come out of the trip, but if they can play tight, close and consistent in those games, then I am good with that also. Again, the main objective on the team right now is to keep everyone healthy and get everyone back in sync in time for the playoffs.
