Now We're Talking
Beating up on the dregs of the league is all well and good, but it is nice to see a good, solid win over a good, solid team like the Rockets. Stacking up the rosters, the Celtics win out on talent and reputation, but we know all too well that reputation doesn't win ballgames. The Rockets have made a living out of overachieving and getting the most out of their roster. The Celtics stepped up the defense and got contributions from the usual suspects and a little help from the bench (which keyed a couple of runs).
Every once in a while, the Celtics live up to their reputations, and it is fun to see.

the most 2008-like stat:
holding the Rockets to 39.5% shooting. In their court.
Ray and PP from beyond the arc
And Sheed actually playing in the post – amazing how the inside-outside works!

"News of their untimely demise is, of course, greatly exaggerated."
They looked like 2008. It was like a different team. If they finish out the season like this I’ll be excited again.
Very Good Game from Rasheed Wallace
Rasheed played one of his best games as a Celtic.
It was a good sign
when he actually passed up that wide-open 3 pointer.
Nine (yes 9) defensive rebounds.
In only 19 minutes. Not to mention a steal and 2 blocked shots!
I really liked the play of ALL the bigs today – Perk, BBD, ’Sheed & KG all did a great job with screens and working under the post on offense and all did even better jobs with controlling space in the paint on defense.
But Sheed was noticeably huge in his minutes.
so concerned...
Have you emailed Zach Lowe yet about this? haha

Tell you what though
I’m glad to see that both Mck and m disagree about KG. Hope to see it clearer tomorrow.
unlike you I thought KG played a very good game.
I thought he was very active on defense. He not only grabbed 8 defensive rebounds, but also had a steal and was constantly shifting into passing lanes and disrupting the Rocket’s offensive sets.
I also liked that he was physical on defense – yeah, he got called for 5 fouls, but he paced those out throughout the game and didn’t back off after getting 3.
Thought he was slow
…beat several times, and quite easily. Also thought his jumping for rebounds was weak. His numbers look decent… but he seemed weak out there, to me.
As somebody said… tomorrow will be the true test. Back to back, and Marion and/or Nowitzky to deal with. Tomorrow is gonna be a hard test.
I hate the anecdotal 'he got beat' judgements
KG in his PRIME got beat. The greatest defenders in the game (of which KG in his prime was) get beat. Numerous times.
But more times than not he guides his man right into the help defense.
And KGs real value isn’t really when his man has the ball. Its how he uses his reach and positioning to disrupt movement and passing through the lanes. Opposing offenses simply don’t work as efficiently when KG is on the floor.
THAT is why he is one of just a tiny handful of players in the NBA with a sub-100 defensive rating.
All true
But he got beat EASILY, was my point. By a slow Scola. More than once. And he seemed unable (or unwilling) to move laterally to stop it. That’s why I didn’t like his game tonight. Nothing about his record. But… I am glad to get disagreement. Maybe I’m seeing things. Tomorrow should be interesting.
What really happened was
…that I thought he looked great in the Knicks game, and was looking for more of that. My expectations were high.
15 pts on 7 of 16 shooting and 8 defensive rebounds
and being key in holding the Rockets to 87 pts.
(The Rockets average about 102 pts per game (with a strong 1.073 offensive efficiency rating.)
Hardly a sub-par game.
Hey, that somebody was me...
sure, it was at a different site, but I thought at least you’d remember my name! :)

There was a lot of good stuff tonight
- Sheed played with full energy. Not sure when I last saw him that active on both D and offensively. If tonight is a true measure, he’s flipping his switch.
- Paul is looking hotter every game. Whew… that was the only real question mark left. If that’s resolved, this team is good to go.
- Thank Danny for not trading away Ray Allen. Again.
But there were problems…
- The funniest, most ridiculous play of the year happened tonight, at about 9:40 of the 2nd quarter. Glen Baby Davis got the ball under the Rockets’ basket. Even though he was surrounded by – not 2, not 3, not 4 but ALL FIVE ROCKETS – Baby did not see fit to pass the ball to any one of the FOUR other open Celtics – no, he decided to “jump”, inasmuch as Davis CAN jump – and try to shoot OVER FIVE GUYS. Turnover, of course. What….An….Idiot.
Add to that Baby’s throw-away TO in Q3 and how he was stuffed (again) in Q4, and I’m a-hatin on Big Baby tonight. (Yeah, I know he got some off. rebounds. So?)
- KG did not look good tonight. He shot ok, but was slow and late on defense, and looked weak jumping. One bad game? Or a true measure of where he is? Hope for the former. But not good.
I know we are not supposed to comment on each others posts!
But I agree with you 100 percent with KG on defense. He seemd to be tentative and a step behind. His offensive game, however, was solid.
Only FANPosts, vinnie
And maybe I was too hasty with that :) It can get worse…(like with some who live in LV and love Cavs?)
per my post up above
I disagree. I thought KG played a very active, physical game on defense.
Big Baby
I have to respectfully disagree with you about Baby.
The offensive rebounds are very important, even if he misses. Don’t know if you saw the post-game interview with Ray, but he talked about exactly that. He said something to the effect of “Baby gets down on himself when he misses layups after a rebound, but we tell him how every time he does it, it chips away a little at the opponent’s morale. And his energy is contagious to the rest of us.”
That being said, in the 4th quarter he did the same thing where he grabbed an off. board and was surrounded by 3 or 4 guys and should have passed it back out. But regardless, I was not down on him tonight and lately he’s been playing like he did last year, just without the jumpers.
FIVE guys around him??
That is the winner of the “most ridiculous play of the year” for me. Five guys… they looked like they were examining a dead body or something… you couldn’t even see Baby in there. it was just… ridiculous!
Baby trys hard no doubt....
But he still is not (even considering his recent play) producing the way he should be this year or the way we expected he would produce this year.
Baby was suppose to be our young stud off the bench this year, our power forward of the future who was suppose to be a starting quality – caliber player (especially after what we saw last year).
But unfortunately that he has been a disappointment this year and has regressed.
Considering we need all the help we can get at the backup power forward position with KG’s health a on going question, lets hope Baby can get his game going before the playoffs as we will really need him to produce for us if we want a shot at a title this year.
I've been as critical as anyone about the uselessness of some of BBD's offensive boards
(because they end up resulting in no points anyway).
But aside from those two boners, the rest of his play tonight was solid.
That mistake (trying to go up with the ball first when swarmed) is one he can learn from. He’s still got a lot of upside. He’s so strong and active for such a big guy and he has a nice soft shooting touch. He’ll be fine. He’s still a baby. Give him time.
Very hopeful of you
I don’t know. Stupid is as stupid does. That was pretty stupid. I just don’t know about that baby….. but, hope you’re right.
I don't think I've ever seen a guy
…buried under 5 opponents like that.
That was Celtics basketball!
We played good defence all night, shut down their transition game and got ours going from stops. Guys generally fought hard as well.
Loved the way Rondo focussed on hounding Brooks all game. I hope he realises how much difference that made and keeps doing it against all our opponents. Defence should be his #1 priority.
Ray played great on both ends, scoring well and keeping Martin under control for most of the game. Pierce is almost back to his old self.
Wallace played well, turning down a couple of threes he could have taken, not complaining to the refs and playing hard. Nate came in and was an effective threat. Finley did a good job on Martin for a stretch there while Ray had a much needed break. I recall one play where he totally denied the ball to Martin with great lateral movement. He’s still got some game!
Yes, Rondo D was excellent
Brooks was SHUT DOWN tonight. Good job by the Cs.
Nice all around win against a good team.
The defense was pretty steady for most of the game.
Pierce and Allen get the game ball tonight but Sheed deserves admirable mention also as he was solid off the bench for the C’s tonight.
The bench is getting a nice groove and chemistry going with the new additions of Robinson and Finley.
Great way to start the trip.
Great win...go Celtics
We hit the boards again, Pierce did look good and even had some offensive rebounds.
Can we beat Dallas at the rebounding game? If we do i think we can get another needed win.
We need wins right now, we can knock Atlanta out of the 3rd seed into the 4th seed. I heard that The 4t seed plays Cleveland in the 2nd round and i would like to see us play them later when we are fully healthy and have worked out any remaining bugs
KG
Looked good tonight. Not sure how one could deny that. And sheer played like a consummate pro rather than a jaded millionaire

Very solid win tonight
Defense did a great job on Brooks and Scola after he was hot in the first period. I thinkn this is the best game I have seen Rasheed Wallace play and Pierce was outstanding in the second half. Still a little concerned with KG on defense, as Scola seemed to be schooling him in the first qaurter, but he did a better job after that. The bench was really solid tonight.
Not a complaint, but just a statement: Has there ever been a player like Glen Davis in the NBA? Incredibly effective at getting offensive rebounds, but incredibly ineffective at finishing. He had four shots blocked tonight.
Wish I could watch tomorrow’s game, but I have to go and musci at the high school in which my daughter is appearing.
Agree....
with your concern about KG’S defense.
Lets hope he is just working out the kinks.
Also about your comments about Baby.
Agree about Baby
There is no other player in the NBA as out of shape as he is, nobody whose jumping ability is SO limited, no one who gets stuffed as much as he does. He does do some good things, for sure… but overall… geez, I think we can do better.
Get ready, DRJ1...here it comes!
Celtics out-rebounded Houston…AND won the game!
Nooo......
….Celtics won, and the rebounding reflects that :)
Yeah, the real important stats are
we shot: 45.7%
they shot: 39.5%
The latter number lead to a lot more rebounds – they grabbed 12 off. rebs while we grabbed 33 def. reb. off their misses.
Our fewer misses lead to just 10 off. reb. for us and 30 def. reb. for them.
Its also good that we shot so well from the field because we only went to the FT line 16 times to their 29.
the Big Baby haters....
Are starting to sound like big babies themselves.
He is averaging 6 off. rebounds per 48 min., which is darn good. So he gets blocked on some of these. He is also getting points off putbacks on some and fouls on the others, fouls which help get us free throws later in quarters. His energy has been fantastic lately, and it seems to me that is exactly what many here have been complaining for.
by KG's Knee on Mar 19, 2010 11:59 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
He does some good things, yes
But did you see the play where he was surrounded by all 5 Rockets, and still didn’t pass to anyone?
yes, but...
The fact he was able to get the board in a crowd of 5 Rockets is pretty darn good. Plus, in another occasion he got a board surrounded by 4 Rockets and got fouled.
by KG's Knee on Mar 20, 2010 12:09 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Yes.
But man… it was just so STUPID. Lol. If he’s surrounded… he doesn’t think that maybe his teammates are open??? Yikes. I mean, who goes up in that situation? Completely surrounded like that.
Suffice to say
If Davis could recognize that getting one’s shot blocked more than any other in the league means you might want to change the way you play. But he’s not a guy who plays within himself and thus continues to make the same mistake over and over again with the same result. He would be so much more effective if he passed the ball once he pulled down a rebound.
'night all
good game. auspicious beginning. paul’s back! league better watch out.
we've been talking, now we're walking. one step at a time.
Good to get the win and start the trip off right. Like to see the attitude from pierce in these last few games. Still got two more to go on trip. 1-2 is not going to cut it so more complements tbd.
by Jimmy Toscano on Mar 20, 2010 12:49 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Nice win
Glad to see Paul get some rhythm going. He still doesn’t look like he has much leap left. His defense hasn’t fully recovered yet either, hopefully that’s next.
I thought KG looked pretty bad in the early going, but he picked it up. Scola was a pretty good barometer of his play. Beat KG badly on two post moves and got him to bite on a jumper upfake and foul. Pretty sure Scola had 10 points in the first quarter, finished with 17.
Ray really stemmed the tide in the 3rd quarter with Paul on the bench with foul trouble.
Anyway the Rockets play hard and have some gritty players, but they’re not that talented overall. I think Dallas will be a more interesting game. Hopefully we can return the favor of the butt-whooping they gave us earlier in the year.
Good to see a solid win against a pretty decent team.
by LT-UK on Mar 20, 2010 5:37 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
It has come down to this...
Celtic fans are so desperate for anything positive to grab hold of, that a hard fought 7 point victory——against a team that has played the entire year without Yao Ming, against a Houston team that will NOT make the playoffs {currently 5 games behind #8 seed Portland}—-is causing Celtic Nation tonight to erupt with dreams of a championship!
Friends, that is precisely how far we have fallen!
I agree completely
I’m afraid tonight against the Mavs will be a blow out, and the majority of posters will note that teams don’t play back to back in the playoffs.

Andrew Bynum injures Achilles tendon...
DRJ1…we need you to provide us with a medical update/prognosis, as only you can!
Lakers saw what the Cs did to Houston
…and said: “Uh oh. They’re back. We need an excuse, QUICK. You, Andrew… fall down. C’mon, it worked last time, it’ll work again.”
Well, I just read about it
…(for the hell of it), and the quote from Bynum is: “I was just running and felt a lot of pain in my calf and down from there. It’s calmed down a little bit now. It was just really sharp, really quick. One or two seconds of super sharp pain.”
From this quote, it sounds exactly like an Achilles tendon rupture, NOT a strain as is being reported. If it is a rupture, he’s done for the season.
That was supposed to be in quotes and addressed to you
If he ruptured the tendon, he would not have been able to walk – or have had it diagnosed as a strain
by nba is the worst on Mar 20, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions
MRI shows no tear or rupture
He will still be out – knowing him – for probably a month
by nba is the worst on Mar 20, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5013366
They’re saying no tear. Strange that he would report a “sudden super-sharp pain”… doesn’t sound like a strain, more like a tear. But… it is what it is.
Partial tear?
That would explain his initial symptoms, and his inability to walk this morning, and still have an MRI that shows no rupture. Could be it. If it’s a partial tear, he might still end up in surgery for it…. depending on how bad.
Really?
A tear is a tear – I don’t get what you mean by “partial tear”.
Why would a small tear not show up on an MRI?
by nba is the worst on Mar 20, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions
It happens
Partial tear in a tendon is like a “sprain” in a ligament. Not easy to see. It’s very hard to explain his symptoms, the sudden “snap” and sharp pain and the inability to walk without a boot, with just a “strain.” Has to be some kind of tear. If just some fibers tore, that would explain everything.
So he would need 3-4 weeks of rest and therapy, which erases the rest of the season. (Assume he doesn’t have surgery, which they wouldn’t do unless the tear was pretty serious – threatening the future strength of the tendon.) Then he may come back for the playoffs, but you know how it is… he’ll be rusty and useless, maybe worse than useless.
Never liked that Bynum kid. Nothing but trouble.
KG & BBD
Both played well. The post game interview of the Houston guard he said the Cs played inspired shut down D and that they were talking on D. Where do you think that comes from? Starts with KG of course! BBD’s energy was also key, as Ray said, it inspires the team. When Ray is inspired, he hits five 3s. They are all connected and feed off each other. That’s what team ball is. Bottom line is they wanted this game, played 2008 D, and the O followed nicely. (Btw. DRJ, how was BBD supposed to pass the ball surrounded by 5 defenders? If he had tried, you’d have criticized him for that. He’s better off going up with it and getting fouled. They were hammering him a lot with no calls.). Bottom line is the Cs are back to doing what they can do. They turned on the switch. They’re gonna roll now.
by Daveonthecape on Mar 20, 2010 6:54 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Don't think the switch is thrown
…all the way yet. We might still see some off games. But they’re gearing up. It will be thrown by the time the playoffs arrive.
Re Baby: I’d have him take his non-pivot foot, take a giant step through the huddle, and throw the ball ANYWHERE in the court. Since all 5 Rockets were surrounding him under their basket (what a sight – I’ve never seen anything like it), the rest of the court was completely empty of Rockets.
Was worried..
..when Houston made a run the 3rd. C’s looked listless for a few minutes, there. But pleased that they picked up the tempo again. And this time the offense did not evaporate, The right guys made the right shots.
Cape Dave (“flipped”)—hope you are right. Lets see how they do on the back to back. TenD
the dallas game is what i'll be watching
they are a serious threat in the west this year. if we can beat them it bodes well for us and our confidence. we wont stop dirk so the key to this game, IMO opinion is stopping haywood, slowing down kidd and butler. rondo should be able to get the hoop at ease as kidds speed has left him.

by nba is the worst on Mar 20, 2010 10:23 AM EDT reply actions
29-5
I dont live in Boston and so I get to see only the games on cable but I am curious about a few things. One, can anyone say if the C’s right now look to be any better/worse then they were when we started the season at 29-5 or was it 25-5? I know several players have been injured like Paul and KG but it looks lately like both are rounding into at least as good of a condition as they were during the early games, we’ve added Nate and BBD is back and playing well. Daniels may not be playing as well but it just seems to me like with increased health that this team should be coming together at just the right time. Thoughts?
It was actually 23-5...
That record was always misleading. They were beating weak teams. The only exceptions were opening night and Xmas day.
The first sign that they couldn`t beat good teams came very early {Nov. 6-20}, when they lost to PHX, ATL, ORL all at home!
They still lose consistently to strong teams.
The only difference is that they now lose occasionally to weak teams…most notably, NJ.
Small correction
You should use the past tense… “The only difference is that they have lost occasionally…”
Sheed Playing Down Low
I read many of the comments, negatively slanted, on Sheed’s playing (or not playing) in the post. Well he’s been doing it all year. Occaisionally he get’s three happy, but if one of the accountants out there can review film and show the minutes Sheed plays inside vs outside you’ll see he’s inside way more than out. Also, one of the reasons Sheed was brought here was to spread the floor and bring other bigs away from the basket to open the lane. I think Sheed has done everything asked of him. The one thing I don’t like is that he plays defense more with has hands than feet. He’s doing a great job defensively with great hands and reflexes, but I would like to see him play more with his feet. All said, he’s been a great addition to this team.
