Thumbgate
Did Glen Davis hurt Shaq's thumb on purpose? Before you dismiss the notion, watch the tape. I'll let Dan Duggan of the Herald present the facts:
BostonHerald.com - Video of Baby-Shaq thumb war
So, about that whole Glen Davis-Shaquille O’Neal incident in last Thursday’s game….it seems that Davis’ take to the Herald on Saturday was a bit off the mark.
Davis claimed that the replays showing him giving a few tugs on O’Neal’s thumb occurred before the Cavs center injured his thumb. O’Neal hurt the thumb when Davis hit it while blocking a shot with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter. O’Neal left the game 39 seconds later during a Cavs timeout. A TNT replay showed Davis pulling on O’Neal’s thumb while they jockeyed for position in the post on a Cleveland possession.
An extended video from the game shows that the Cavs actually had a second offensive possession before O’Neal was removed from the game. The video shows Davis grabbing at O’Neal’s thumb, and the exchange clearly happened after the initial injury.
Ironically, Shaq's injury was the best thing that could have happened for the Cavs in that game since it led to the small frontline lineup that killed the Celtics down the stretch.
What do you think?

I would say he was NOT pulling on it
instead rather trying get his hand in better position over Shaq’s – if he wanted to hurt it he would have done something more dramatic….Shaq never winces or anything..
Besides….Big Babies try to “suck” thumbs – not pull on them.

I would think
that shaq would have reacted more severely if it was a hard pull/intentional.
But it certainly doesn’t look clean, and it probably didn’t feel good for shaq.
Heh
I mentioned this in the game thread – after Shaq hurt his thumb but before he left the floor it looked like Baby was clearly pulling on it. Then Shaq called timeout and left for good.
We’ve seen the Clippers do this to Pierce when he had a dislocated finger, so it’s not a surprise a guy like Glen might do something similar if he noticed Shaq was hurting.

after the initial hit...
…Shaq hardly reacts to it. Davis is looking up at the scoreboard. And that 2nd play both were jockeying for position, just normal stuff in the post. I doubt anyone, including Davis, even knew that his thumb was a major issue. Certainly the announcers, the Cavs coaching staff, everyone watching at home, probably the players too, had no clue.
Maybe we’re just all sick and tired about talking about how we’re playing, need something else like this to distract ourselves.
Non-story…

i think
glen davis is fat and dumb.
whether he hurt shaq on purpose or not, the cavs clearly think he did and that’s what matters – it gives them extra motivation for the next game in a couple of weeks. baby may want to get the flu that night.
regarding the irony
yes, shaq coming out helped them against the C’s, because the C’s can’t run with the quicker more athletic teams. however, this is a big blow for the cavs because with ilgauskas gone for the next few weeks, it FORCES them to play small and takes away any post presence.
Why is this a topic for discussion?
Are we this desparate for a story?
