Why do people say Glen Davis is having a bad year?

Glen has come a long way

via media.masslive.com

So all this year I've been reading comments about how Glen Davis is doing awful and that he is lazy and that we should have traded him. I'm just wondering if were all watching the same player.

I think we all need to remember a few things. First this is only his THIRD year, he still has a lot of time to become a great player and he is already a solid seventh man. Second, the guy was out for practically half of the year and he is still playing great, and I know a lot of people were angry on the reason Glen broke his thumb and I agree it was stupid of him. But once again he is young and still slightly immature.

Now on to "The Eleventh Hour" ' s ( No disrespect but I still like Big Baby)  play this year. It's obvious that his mid range game isn't all the way back, but he can still hit it and he's getting there. I have noticed that he has improved his post offense and footwork. He just seems a lot more comfortable in the paint now. Davis is also one of if not the best offense rebounders the C's have. I also like that he can play more mobile PF's and keep up with them, like we saw with Thaddeus Young against the 76ers. I don't understand why people say Sheldon should get minutes ahead of Glen, I will agree Sheldon is a better rebounder and his mid range game is almost equal to Davis, but Williams has hands of brick and can't guard mobile PF's.

So what do you guys think? Leave comments but please be respectful.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

mostly because of his propensity to have his shots blocked

and his immature behavior on and off the court.. thats my opinion anyway

He gets so many shots blocked because he's been playing underneath the basket

why I’m not sure why he is. Yeah, I like the effort. But he played so well last year because of his mid-range game.

Agree with his behavior. That’s why I was ready for him to go.

Well it's interesting concept

One I’ve tried to understand this as well.

Some of it nonsensical hate. Those are the most frustrating. They seem to take pleasure in putting him down to get a rise out of people. It reminds me of middle school.

Some of it powe vs davis and not admitting being wrong. Sad.

Some of it is constructive. But this is probably the smallest group. They see his faults and are honest about how he helps the team.

The blocking complaints never made sense since it’s the same as a missed shot . I probably shouldn’t care it just bothers me from a logic stand point.

"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said

by Birdbrain on Mar 6, 2010 6:35 PM EST reply actions

The difference is that Davis gets a ton of shots blocked inside.

Inside shots are supposed to be much higher percentage. Forwards should generally have a much higher shooting percentage than guards as a result. Davis would rank around the bottom 20% of all qualified forwards, and that includes the small forwards of the world who are shooting from deep, etc and does not include Centers, who would presumably drag the average up. If we were to replace Davis with tall player X. Given the same shots, the average center/power forward would shoot much better.

If he were to get his outside game back, it’d be perfect. If only Sheed and Davis would switch mindsets. Constantly in the post vs. Constantly shooting jumpers.

Bla Bla Bli

I’ve always loved Big Baby and know what a great player he is. Celtics are so lucky to have him. When I addressed the same observation, Birdbrain, and called some here “haters” of BBD about a month ago, I was called down by the moderator!!! But it’s so true. The name calling, the repeated going back to past mistakes is so negative and I personally don’t like it at all. Sometimes group dynamics are to make a scapegoat of someone. It’s not always Baby. It has been the same with Sheed, Ray Allen, and many other players. Apparently some think the definition of maturity is having a thick skin and being able to takle constant put-downs. Well, that’s just not so. People are human; young 20-something people are especially sensitive to critisizm. I think our players possibly read these boards and I know that even I have a hard time stomaching the negativity sometimes. But I don’t give up hope for a better attitude coming out here. Losing games hurts and I understand the frustration. But we all should remember our players are human beings and no matter how much they get paid, or how blessed they are with their talent, or how lucky they are to have a job in the NBA, they are still human beings, mostly young people, and they deserve respect and support. I was so glad to see this positive article about BBD. T.P.Zak

agree

completely agree.. say what you want about BBD off the court, he is our toughest and hardest working player underneath the basket. he gets a decent number of shots blocked but that’s because he’s the only one rolling around on the ground going for the loose balls.

on a team of players who say they’re ‘bored’ with the regular season games, give me BBD’s hustle and intensity any day of the week.

haha glen davis is the toughest player on the celtics????? HAHAHAHAHA oh my god what a statement!!!

i dont like to make fun of posters thoughts but that is probably the craziest statement i have ever seen on this board

The thing abbout BBD is, if he's going to learn to be truly effective, he needs to learn to use his wide body more effectively.

I’ve watched too many games this year where he clears out space and gets a great offensive rebound and then gets rejected when he goes back up. This happens to anybody going up among the trees now and then but it happens to BBD too often. He’s got to learn to carve out space with his bulk after he gets the rebound, go back up and score. Lots of wide bodies can score inside without great leaping ability. He’s just not all the way there yet.

I’ve had the same frustration with Perk at times. Gets the offensive board, goes back up and gets swatted. Nothing is more deflating to offensive rhythm.

Very rude, jbuell

You just keep laughing.hahahaha. I can’t believe the moderator didn’t rain down upon you for breaking the rules here. So you disagree or something?

by mmbaby on Mar 6, 2010 9:46 PM EST reply actions

come on really?

so u think big baby is the toughest player on this team?? that really made me laugh out loud.. its an absloutely crazy statement.. this is the guy who was crying on the bench a year and a half ago… also the same guy who broke his thumb earlier this year getting in a fight off the court..

Toughness is physical and mental…. baby has NEITHER

by jbuell719 on Mar 6, 2010 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

You completely misconstrued what JunkyardDawg said.

“he is our toughest and hardest working player underneath the basket.” does not equal “toughest player on this team”

I wouldn’t agree that he is the toughest under the basket on the team, but he does put in work down there, and it is a fair statement to make.

Tough is as tough does

That’s a reference to Forest Gump’s ‘stupid is as stupid does’. Anyway, as far as BBD being the toughest guy on the team, well, he is certainly not the toughest mentally. However, if you are talking about physically tough then, yeah, he might be. It takes a pretty tough guy to break or damage anything on Shaq.

To answer the original post as to why so many people say BBD has had a poor season. I think it has to do with his broken thumb and consequently poor start. Most bloggers though see players the way they want them to be not what the team sees them as. BBD is a very, very important memeber of this team. His occasional spot D on players like Howard, Shaq, and Duncan would be very hard to replace with a player of rotation. He does give us another element of toughness. I mean, if there is a really hard foul on Paul or KG do you think it more effective to have Rasheed return the foul or BBD?

Yawn

Oh wow, what a statement! Way off subject, way off everything that has a passing association with reality! Wow!

Baby's game isn't doing much for us now or in the future

He is a poor rebounder and abysmal finisher around the rim. His jump shot has disappeared this season but was only mediocre last year. Despite his age, I do not see him improving much in the future. If he works on his jump shot, he will just become a perimeter big man who rebounds even less (aka a 300 lbs Memo Okur). Otherwise, he will remain a high energy undersized big who is simply a large body to bang against physical low post players.

Baby has regressed this year...

for whatever reason I think that is evidently clear.

Though I think the effort is thier (he plays hard) I think for no fault of his own he lacks the length, height (his official 6’9" height stat is bogus)and jumping ability to properly play the power forward position.

Due to his lack of physical attributes, Baby has a hard time rebounding, defending and especially finishing offensively around and close to the basket when matched up against longer, taller power forwards.
He must lead the NBA in number of personal shots blocked by opposing teams.

Babys lack of athleticism also does not help matters when he goes up against athletic power forwards.

I think his play this year has hurt the team since we are getting a lack of help at the power forward position behind Garnett off the bench.
Also considering Garnett has not been at 100% so far this season this weakness is even more glaring, since we have no one to sufficiently step in contribute in place of KG when he is hurt or having a off night

I think since the back up power position is the weakest position on our club, the C’s need need to remedy theh problem before the playoffs by getting Shelden Williams some playing time to prime him for the playoffs and also if possible by signing another big front court player with the last roster spot we have available who can help the cause also.

BBD a poor rebounder???

I don’t think I am watching the same game… Davis had 6 rebounds before half time tonight. He plays harder than almost anyone on the court. Yeah, he gets his shot blocked quite a bit, but that just means he needs to practice some fakes. That has NOTHING to do with his athletic ability as I am sure it is far superior to not only mine, but every single person talking trash. He is the only one trying to get the rebound when everyone else is walking to the other end of the court. Thanks for this topic Zak B… Without BBD, the Celtics would never have seen post season last year.

by Brewnami on Mar 7, 2010 11:29 PM EST reply actions

Yes he is

His total rebound percentage this season is 14.2%, which is above his career of 12.3%. That’s very bad.

For comparision, Shelden’s rate this season is 16.5%.

by BigRedDog42 on Mar 8, 2010 1:30 AM EST up reply actions

Believe it or not...

BBD’s athletic ability is not being compared to ours (the fans’). When you compare BBD’s athleticism to other power forwards around the league, he is wandering on the lower end of the spectrum. His ability to jump and move his feet quickly are both lagging compared to other PFs around the league.

However, I also believe that BBD is one of the most energetic PFs in the league. His hustle is outmatched by many and he can be a real force on the offensive boards due to his hustle. It is really too bad that he can’t get up as high or move as quickly as most other PFs in the league. If he were up to par, he would be able to finish a lot of his offensive boards and have an easier time getting his shot off down low.

None the less, BBD has played a huge role for the C’s and will continue to do so as long as he logs minutes.

Rebounds, yes Put backs, NO NO NO BAD BABY pass tha ball to daddy Ray

he gets the board then throws it against the bottom of the cylinder. unacceptable he does not get to put back every board he needs to share the rock! He cannot convert when under the basket. and he can not get up there to dunk it. FEED RAY THE ROCK!!!

fruitless hustle

I posted this in the forums
-————————————————

I am really torn on Big Baby right now. I love that he is the one guy consistently busting his tail – especially on the offensive glass, but his failure to convert the results of his energy into something productive (ie: a bucket) is more often the rule than the exception.

I think it’s vital that the C’s have a guy who is maniacally determined get at the ball off the offensive glass, so I’m ready to give him a bit of a pass on getting his putbacks put back in his face, but sheesh, at what point are the pluses negated by the lack of results.

Getting those extra possessions is huge, I just wish Baby would kick it back out every now and then. Let’s use all that energy for something good.

I also wish a few more Celts would follow his lead and attack the glass. Baby’s not the biggest guy on the court, but a little position, and a lot of determination go a long way in rebounding.

Keep getting the offensive boards Baby! Just make sure we get some points off of them too.

I think we're harping on Davis too much

Based upon his skill and size, he should be getting 8 minutes a game in a playoff setting. I’m fine with that, and will certainly route for him to succeed in that role.

I think people are saying he is having a down year because statistically he is playing worse than he played towards the end of the year. Not to be a debbie downer, but of all 21 unique catagories a player can be measured in on 82games.com, the Celtics are better with Davis on the court in only 1 catagory (offensive rebounds). If you check Sheldon and every other player, they have way more than 1 catagory to claim.

Davis’ other problem isn’t his own problem, but ours as fans. Many of us are the hard working quiet types in our careers, so we appreciate when a Powe or Sheldon come along. Those are the guys we naturally pull for. We’ve also seen the loud-mouth or golden child of a CEO get promoted w/o the work to back it up. Once Davis pulled his off-season bonehead move and Sheldon quietly took his place and performed well, we didn’t want the reigns to immediately go back to Davis. Since Davis took all of Sheldon’s minutes, and it was unwarranted, many of us fans developed some resentment towards Davis.

I think in the end I just don’t care for much of his game or personality. I route for him b/c he’s a Celtic, but would much rather see other players get his minutes.
