KG's Kiss

washingtonpost.com

Blatche was noticeably upset and appeared to hold back tears as he explained his encounter with Garnett, which nearly got heated when Garnett approached Blatche and tried to wrestle the ball away from him. Blatche appeared to throw an elbow as Garnett continued to taunt him. Blatche later flung Garnett into a cameraman and sent him to the foul line for two free throws. Garnett smiled as he was helped off the ground. Reserve forward James Singleton said Garnett used his "veteran senses" to needle Blatche and get under his skin. "I see myself as defending myself as a player. I'm a man, just like they a man. If a man is talking to me this close to my face," Blatche said, moving his hand toward his cheek. "I'm going to say something back. He has to respect me just like I respect him. I just, 'Get up out of my face.' He was this close in my face - I can feel his lips touching my cheek - I wasn't bragging saying 'Ah we winning.' It was 'Back up.' "

Time to grow up Andre.  (You too Stephen Jackson)

I like that for Perk- Hurt Locker.

Blatche is a selfish guy, but a good baller. I can’t say this is anything new about KG, but this might confirm my dislike for Andre.

Perhaps KG should do a little growing up

Sometimes it appears he does go too far with the trash and other shenaningans.

Its Sad.

In the past he never had to resort to things like this.

His game was loud enough.

Then again, I have no idea what this season has done to him mentally, So I am not judging him to harshly..

Oh please

Buddy, I’m not even afraid to admit that Matt Barnes called and he’s not impressed with KG’s trash talk. I mean, just look at how he was giving Kobe the verbal business. You think Matt Barnes faking that pass to Kobe’s face wasn’t played a hundred times on SportsCenter? XD

But as far as KG, him doing this isn’t news; he punched a player in practice as a Timberwolve. (http://one-man-weave.blogspot.com/2008/08/kevin-garnett-punches-rick-rickert.html) You’ll also seethe article says he punched Wally during an argument.

I know you’re not a random nub, and I respect that, but KG’s had his trash talk card for a long time. Infact, I’d figure you’d know better. : \ It’s no biggie, but KG’s past is no rosier than his present. So…the subtle shot can be dropped, plz.

Perhaps Garnett should stick to playing when he's getting his clock cleaned by Blatche.

I know Garnett is hurt. All the more reason he should be focusing on his game instead of making a fool of himself.

Man, did you actually read what happened? Making a fool of himself? He made a fool out of Blatche and helped us win the game. Get the facts straight.

Blatchey needs to grow up

Though he has talent, give him a couple years and a better team and see what he can do.

Really do like Hurt Locker for Perk, fits him well, though any copyright laws to contend with these days?

This team really has to key back in to that trash talking way, it is just how they play.

Memo to KG...

Trash Talking “might” be of value when you are a young, healthy superstar in the prime of your career.

It`s downright “laughable” when you are pushing 34 years of age…while you drag your gimpy knee up the floor, as you grimace in pain!

What I missing here?

I don’t understand how there could be disagreement here. KG said whatever he said, got Blatche all emotional, and ended up getting 2 FTs out of it… plus possibly some (unknown) effect on Blatche’s game. How is all that a BAD thing?

by DRJ1 on Mar 9, 2010 12:28 AM EST reply actions

you obviously don't play basketball, or any other sport.

cause if you did, you’d recognize that there is a concept called “personal space” that you generally don’t violate, even when playing.

Bleed Green. What does it mean?

by CelticsHooRah on Mar 9, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

No, he was completely dumb. He could’ve simply talked trash back, or at the very least play tougher more aggressive. And if he’s going to do anything violent, make sure the freaking ref is not watching.

by BudweiserCeltic on Mar 9, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

You're missing the point

…and have from your first post here. This is so obvious that explaining it feels like a waste of time. But, in the spirit of generosity, I will attempt to correct your many misconceptions.

- Basketball is a contact sport. LOTS of contact. Perhaps you’ve noticed that. There is no such thing as “personal space” in the NBA. Guys are pushing, touching, jostling each other all the time.

- They are allowed to talk to each other. Yes, there’s a rule against taunting, but that’s a judgment call – so if the refs don’t call it, it’s not there.

- KG was having a bad game. Being the determined fighter he is, he searched for ways to help his team win. He careened to the floor after a loose ball, which helped turn the game around. And he trash-talked Blatche – because he CORRECTLY recognized that Blatche was susceptible. And it worked. Blatche got upset, fouling KG a short time later and giving him 2 FTs. Blatche also proceeded to miss every shot he took after that.

- For you, as a purported Celtics fan, to complain about this is ludicrous. We are not talking about PHYSICAL abuse here (like Zidane’s). We’re talking about talking. KG did his job. He got under an opponent’s skin and caused him to play badly. KG is to be LAUDED for that, not derided.

I’m sorry… more for myself than for you… that I had to explain all this as if I were talking to a 5-year-old. But hey… it was all in a good cause. You certainly needed the straightening-out.

your third point is valid

since I wasn’t able to watch the game. But the double standard being employed here can be best described with the “gang sign” that P flashed during the Hawks series/2008 championship run. Horford (I believe) said something and P reacted somewhat calmly using the “whatever” sign (index-to-thumb in a circle with the other three fingers pointed out), but it never got down to “your-mama is such and such” or whatever. As we all know they eventually let their games do the talking. KG DIDN’T.

There are other points to be made here but that’s the gist of it.

BTW, I don’t believe 5-year-old’s understand the meaning of “ludicrous” “lauded” “susceptible”, etc. Looks like you still don’t understand the meaning of “crossing the line” yet. Try not to become a Lakers fan, pal..

Despite what people like Title 18, lemonade sky, and BS Patrol say, trash talking is part of the NBA, and does that really mean considering how the NBA was a few decades ago, when it borderlined to football out there?

Polite Society

There are sports where ‘trash talking’ is not considered a part of the game. In fact, it’s either illegal or considered in very poor taste. For instance, can you imagine another pro golfer shouting ‘playboy’ as Tiger enters his backswing? Even a sport like volleyball has this to a degree. However, this is basketball. It is, always has been, and always will be a very physical game. It also allows players to trash talk each other and by golly if it helps us win then I say KG should talk about every other players mothers, sisters, cousins and whoever else. That is, unless it makes that player better then he needs to shut up. I also think he might need to make BBD cry during a televised game one more time before the playoffs.

Time to grow up Andre. ?

Actually, I think that could be said of KG. If he wasn’t a Celtic, we would all hate KG’s behavior. What if he was the opposition and started that with Perk? Would we be so quick to criticize Perk for not being able to put up with trash talk?

by thereallargejames on Mar 9, 2010 11:54 AM EST reply actions

this is kind of funny..

because didn’t KG do this in Minny with Perk? I think it happened a couple times in fact and I distinctly remember Perk and Big Al both having big games and leading the Cs to a victory in the Garden in one of them (the other one might have been the Blount Skippy game, yak). I don’t think we would necessarily criticize Perk if he had folded, but I think disappointment would have been there. Blatche definitely folded down the stretch. I guess the question for Wiz fans will be, does he grow from it, or shrink again.

As for KG I definitely hated it when he did it in a Minnesota uniform. Since he’s on our team it’s a little different, sometimes I thought it was funny, sometimes in bad taste; it was usually effective though as far as getting guys out of their games (which I think was usually KG’s purpose). This year however it is pretty uncomfortable, kind of like watching an old guy trying to hit on young women he doesn’t have a chance with—and I guess to his credit he’s done less of it (or has seemed to, imo). Anyway, the guy is definitely not classy. KG ≠ Ray Allen. But I’m not sure it’s a matter of “growing up”. Jordan and Bird come to mind, and I don’t think anyone told them to grow up much. You sure don’t hear about it now anyway.

Taunting

If Dikembe couldn’t wag his finger after a block, then a lot of KG’s antics seem like illegal taunting and cause for technical fouls.

by Tugboat on Mar 9, 2010 12:41 PM EST reply actions

It's a judgement call by the refs.

If they don’t call it. It didn’t happen.

The C’s do get their share of taunting calls. But refs generally pace that and don’t, as a rule use it for general trash talking. KG is just one of a zillion guys in the NBA who trash talk. If they called taunting on all that, their would be 20 T’s called every game.

by mmmmm on Mar 9, 2010 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

kg's act

KG’s act is getting sooooo old. Getting in people’s faces like that is bush league. If I was Blatche i would have shoved him right in the face, maybe even cold cocked him. It’s so disrespectful, but Blatche needed to retaliate and he didn’t. Back in the day KG would have been decked. Imagine him getting in the face of a Barkley or Charles Oakley. He wouldnt stand a chance. I’m getiing sick of his bs, especially after not making a shot all game, he’s lucky Blatche folded like a pair of pants

by acie earl fanclub on Mar 9, 2010 1:55 PM EST reply actions

your reaction...

is exactly what KG wants! if blatche cold cocked him that’s a HUGE PLUS for the celtics in that game blatche is gone and we get 2 free throws???… how do you fail to see this is gamesmanship? KG gets in other people’s heads, there is a ton of value in competition to do this, taking your opponent out of his game, causing him take shots, make passes, etc that he wouldn’t if it weren’t for KG’s smack talk.

and guess what, IT WORKED. his own coach called him out on it!!! HOW DO YOU NOT SEE THIS!?

for christ sake I do this in rec league games constantly, talking about the player’s deficiencies (Make him go left! let him shoot!, etc.) and it works more often than not. the player tries to show you up and it takes them out of their game. now obviously such basic taunts don’t work on NBA players (they can almost all use their opposite hand and shoot) so instead you get PRO LEVEL trash talking.

honestly I wonder just how competitive some of the people who disagree with this stuff are…

I don't think this is 'just basketball'

I want to respect the players as people and KG acting that way makes me nauseous. I did love the guy but now am not sure about him. Fans talking about how immature some of the younger players are and ragging them on that when they are in their early 20’s. Who isn’t mature then? But KG is at the age of maturity and needs to behave ‘professionally’. Basketball is no excuse for sorry behaviour. Nor is any other sport. Nor is any other profession except maybe the fake wrestling stuff where it’s considered entertainment.

by hooray on Mar 9, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

He wasn't helping win the game with 4TOs and 0-7 from the field.

He flat out got his clock cleaned by Blatche. Garnett played Scalabrine-level basketball against Washington. I don’t see Scal talking trash.

That’s the part of the argument I understand.

Our starting backcourt won this game.

by Finkelskyhook on Mar 9, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

True

about the backcourt guys. But KG’s D on Blatche helped (he missed a lot of shots in the end), as did the 2 FTs he got from Blatche losing it.

by DRJ1 on Mar 9, 2010 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Trash-talking might have been KG's most effective "play"

Seems to me the only time KG “stopped” Blatche was after he started talking to him. Tommy was all over the point that Blatche was not a guy who wanted to take the shots at the end of the game. He passed up an open jumper he’d been draining all game, and then he threw up that weak fallaway over KG. It was pretty obvious he was playing scared. I don’t think it’s a big leap to say KG got into his head.

by Berkcelt on Mar 9, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

one games stats...

doesn’t prevent garnett from talking smack.

20,000+ career points
1st ballot hall of famer
former league MVP
former defensive POY
multiple time all star
multiple all-nba
etc.

going 0-7 on one night doesn’t mean the guy doesn’t have what it takes to back it up.

for once DRJ and I completely agree, I don’t see the argument against trash talking, particularly this time around. It helped take blatche off his game, Flip saunders said as much. How can you argue against something that was clearly effective in helping us win the game?

Not to mention that KG was wipin' the boards clean with 10 defensive rebounds.

The 0-7 and the traveling calls were mostly just KG being off his game on offense. They weren’t really from anything Blatche or the Wiz defense was doing.

Awesome

I swa that, it was hilarious and extremely effective. If you have a problem with what KG is saying, do something about it. Basketball is a mans sport, and each and every player that steps onto the court has to be mentally tough enough to handle it. Every player in the NBA trash talks, you look at Shaq, you look at Kobe, hell even Duncan and Ray Allen are trash talkers, they are just less noticeable because they do it in different ways, i have seen both player play, and know how much they talk. And to all those people saying KG has no class, well that may be on the court if you are a fan of the other team, but if you are a fan of the Celtics or my timberwolves, you know how classy the guy really is. He is always the first one to help a teammate when he is down in the floor, i mean the guy literally runs to his teammates. He has never been involved in anything off-court, in fact the only thing he has been fined by the league for outside of the court is when he got too hyped for game 7 against the Kings in 2004 and said something about loading up firearms. BTW, CavsFannLV, KG shakes the hand of every player on the opposing team, even if the Celts lose, oh and when he gets dunked on, he doesn’t hide the tape, oh yeah, he doesn’t disrespect other teams by tickling a fallen player like what he did against the Wolves, real classy
