Celtics Get 19th Pick In Draft

Celtics shimmy to No. 19 in draft - Celtics Blog - ESPN Boston

NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson oversaw drawings at the Board of Governors meeting to break ties among teams that finished the season with matching records and Boston won a four-way tie-breaker with San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and Portland to shimmy all the way up to No. 19 in the 2010 draft.

The Green could have selected anywhere from 19-22 after all four teams finished with 50-32 records. The four teams do reverse order in the second round, so Boston's second-round selection will be No. 52 overall.

For frame of reference, some other 19 picks from recent years include J.J. Hickson, Hakim Warrick, Javaris Crittenton, Zach Randolph, and Jamaal Magloire.

REPOSTED: Its going to be a pretty deep draft this year

and traditionally, some really good picks have come in that range.

Projected to go 19 by draftexpress

Can’t say I’d complain. Would be the beginning of the Rondo era by getting him a legitimate finisher on the fast break

god would i be one happy camper if we got sanders!

c'mon now...

…i have a hard time believing anyone the celtics draft will have any opportunity to be an impact player unless there’s a very different team or philosophy (coach) next season. our team continues to look for answers by alternate means and uses draft picks simply as trade chips. i honestly have a hard time seeing any rookie beyond john wall being able to crack the rotation under this philosophy, even if the team has obvious deficiencies.

My Feeling Exactly

I don’t see anyone we draft getting much run unless there’s a lot of turnover on the team; a lot of injuries; and/or there’s a new coach.

If we go the two guard, I like Anderson from OSU. The guy really improved his game, and is far more balanced of a player. But he’s got to play. He can’t rot on the bench for a season or two. Lots of bigs too, so this is a good draft. I’d like to see Danny trade up in the second round and get two solid picks this draft, but again, there’s got to be a commitment to play them.

I can see Danny clearing out Sheed, Daniels, Nate, Scal, and possibly Ray. The team would still be competitive. We definitely need some athleticism.

Oh well. Let’s see what happens with Miami first.

I could see all of those you mention going except Wallace

Who’s going to want his contract for two more years? No one. I think we’re stuck with him. Ugh.

by Mencius on Apr 16, 2010 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

That ship has sailed

This team is not and will not be a legit contender in the next couple of years. After we’re knocked out of the playoffs, Danny begins the rebuild. We’re no longer trading away draft picks in a win at all costs now mode. The pick stays.

by Mencius on Apr 16, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, which is part of why Doc goes.

The 19th pick in Danny’s hands in a deep draft year is worth about the 10th pick in an average GM’s hands in an average year.

by clover on Apr 17, 2010 5:45 AM EDT up reply actions

This is great news

When was the last time we had a 19th pick? It’s a very useful chip for Danny – he’s found starters (including an all-star) with later picks than this one.

I'm a HUGE Duke fan

So I want Singler to stay in school haha. Gives us a better shot at repeating with a young Mr. Curry about to make his debut, alongside Kyrie Irving.

by Greg Payne on Apr 16, 2010 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been a big Duke fan for the last 25 years too.

I think Singler will be a dud in the NBA. Not big enough to be a PF and not athletic enough be an effective SF. Just my take.

by Mencius on Apr 16, 2010 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus, I'd love him to return to Duke for his last year

While I don’t think much of his prospects as an NBAer, he sure does well in Duke’s system.

by Mencius on Apr 16, 2010 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I completely agree

You can’t throw him into the NBA and expect him to become this go-to/iso player, and he’s not enough of a pure shooter to fall back solely on that. He needs to return for his senior year, hone his skills a little bit more, and try for the league next summer.

trade it away

for a high pick for next year

by greenbeand on Apr 16, 2010 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

Why?

We have as good a pick as we could hope for considering our position.

Plus, I think there are rules against trading your first round pick two years in a row.

by KY Celts fan on Apr 16, 2010 10:11 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Since Doc is not going to be around, thank God, The new Coach will certainly play the new guys – so lets trade back our 19th pick for Walker, Giddens, Brian Hunter, Forte, etc, etc. No, Im not tripping.

by Reyquila on Apr 16, 2010 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

Giddens can stay gone

Don’t kid yourself. Nate’s been more consistent in the Knicks’ offense than Giddens and Walker combined.

by Tai on Apr 17, 2010 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, thank god Doc will be gone. I am getting tired of those 50-win seasons. Let’s have some real action — I mean, how will we attack the top pick in the draft if Doc’s here trying to win games, eh?

by kozlodoev on Apr 17, 2010 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

It would be nice if they could find a way to get Cole Aldrich of Kansas…

by mdowell04 on Apr 16, 2010 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

I have watched every KU game the last 3 years. Cole can rebound and change a game defensively. He blocks shots without fouling. Interesting to see how he translates into the NBA though. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to have some more dependable height.

Last time the Celtics had the 19th pick...1993

They drafted Acie Earl……how did that turn out?

by Title 18 on Apr 16, 2010 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

danny should...

DA should buy a high second round pick, he could buy guys in the second round like : Dexter pittman,Greivis Vasquez, quincy pondexter (could go to the sencond round)
a guy like kyle singler could slip into the second round(maybe, hopefully)
for the shooting guard position danny should sign a undrafted, d-leaguer, second rounder… etc any kind of situation as long as the kid is a sharpshooter, ballhandling does not really matter for now. anthony morrow, dequan cook would be great.
Amir johnson from the raptors is a free agent this summer, if danny is smart he would sign that kid.
He could sign dorell wright who would be gr8 as a SF. 39% 3pt

by businessbmw on Apr 17, 2010 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

if the Celtics want a sharpshooter in the 2nd round

They should go with Andy Rautins from Syracuse. Moves very well without the ball, one of the best perimeter shooters in basketball, consistent shooting form, shoots square every time, is a very high energy defender. Honestly, I don’t know why he’s not getting more NBA consideration. Could be a very good role player off the bench for some team.

by Greg Knopping on Apr 17, 2010 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Acie Earl is the bum with the bad hip the Celtics drafted. He could hardly run

Can't wait to see

The awesome rookie we draft who Doc will never play.

by joebianca on Apr 17, 2010 2:14 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I remember him playing a LOT of young players a few years ago

I don’t remember us having any “awesome rookies” the last few years.

by TheOutletPass on Apr 17, 2010 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions

That was because

He had no choice. All we had was young players and the team was awful. Maybe we haven’t had any great rookies, but Walker is definitely a player (as many of us continually said) and Hudson will be decent. Doc buried and traded both of them for no reason.

by joebianca on Apr 17, 2010 4:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Of course, of course — when he doesn’t play scrubs like Green or Giddens, Doc is a talent killer. When he plays guys like Gomes, West, or, indeed, Rondo, who obviously contribute — he has no choice.

by kozlodoev on Apr 17, 2010 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Am I wrong?

Who else was he going to play in 06-07? And I didn’t say anything about Giddens or Green. Instead of addressing the two guys I did bring up, you deflected and made up your own argument. Well done. It doesn’t bother you that Bill Walker is lighting it up and was traded for no reason? Why wasn’t he given minutes?

by joebianca on Apr 17, 2010 1:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I am sorry, but our definitions about “lighting it up” apparently differ.

The guy is scoring 10 ppg in a system where everyone has a green light to shoot from everywhere, still plays no defense to speak of, and fouls like there is no tomorrow.

So watching a couple of Knicks game should serve as an excellent expose on why Walker barely played with the Celtics. Unless, of course, we’re tired of those 50+ win seasons and really envy the Knicks’ record.

by kozlodoev on Apr 17, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Point is

He clearly can play in this league, and there was no reason for Doc to bury him like he did. And you still haven’t told me who Doc was going to play in ‘06-’07 other than the young folk.
