YES!

On to the next round!

Celtics shock the world.  Cleveland goes out with a whimper.

  • LeBron had a triple double with 27 points, 10 assists, and 19 rebounds.  And you know what?  I still didn't think he played very well.  The 9 turnovers probably had something to do with that.
  • Well, at least he shook hands after the game.  That's always nice.
  • New York KnicksNew York Knicks! New York Knicks!
  • Did the Cavs quit?  Will LeBron bolt?
  • For all the news that the Cavs are going to make in the next few days, it is the Celtics that get to advance and keep playing.
  • What else can we really say about Rondo at this point?  He's our leader.
  • Huge game by Garnett, imposing his will on the Cavs from the get go.
  • Sheed!  Seriously.
  • I love the new Tony Allen.  Just embarrassed Antwan Jamison on that dunk.  But even more impressive, he stripped James on a post up move.  Just picked his pocket clean.  Perfect.
  • De-fense! De-fense! De-fense!

Keep doubting us world.  Keep doubting us.

They Quit!!!

Wow.

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

by Green17 on May 13, 2010 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

I called it in the game thread.

I can’t believe I saw a pro team, with their whole season on the line, just quit like that, with over a full minute left.

They STILL had time to at least make a run at it. But they quit. I can see doing that in a regular season, meaningless game. But in a close-out game in the playoffs?

Pathetic.

by mmmmm on May 13, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree ...

I was stunned by the way the Cavs just gave up at the end.

by fordescort on May 13, 2010 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I could not believe they quite either.Down by 9, about a minute left with Rondo dribbling. Ronda had been bricking FT’s all night. If they foul him, he missed 2 and they rebound and get a quick 3, it is a two possession game with a little less than a minute left. That is an eternity in the NBA. So, I agree with you that something else was going on. I think they were making a statement, either (a) tipping their hats to the Celtics, (b) to LeBron since they all know he is quitting on them by leaving, © to the coach that he was incompetent in this series. or (4) ownership to replace Brown. It is baffling.

just like like the finals in 08…

by Green17 on May 13, 2010 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

As well as every single Yahoo and CNNSI analyst.

by kozlodoev on May 13, 2010 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep - both those guys use actual basketball knowledge when they analyze things.

Something that is scarce in so many of the other analysts …

I’ll give Mashburn additional props in that he seemed sick and tired of having to constantly talk about Lebron. He visibly sighed when one of the questions steered the conversation right back to his Kinginess.

by mmmmm on May 14, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Though he did give the Cs a lot more respect than many commentators.

TA is now the best defender in the league?!?!?!?

How did that happen? It’s like he is back to pre-knee injury Tony. It’s amazing. My mind is totally blown by this revelation.

Salmon and mashed for all.

Where Has He Been?

Maybe it is the fact he’s finally fully recovered from injury, but where in the world has this guy been? Suddenly he’s delivering on all the promise he showed that first season.

Injured

He’s been injured, when not injured he has always played well, and now that he has truly accepted his role and team ethic, he doesn’t make the same stupid mistakes, but he has always shown flashes, this has just beenhis most consistent season yet

great job TA

by Warrior Spirit on May 13, 2010 11:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Pretty much agree

Tony still makes some headscratching plays but this is pretty much who he’s always been. Great guy to have off the bench esp. since he’s fully bought into it. He’s been basically healthy since mid-December and we’re reaping the benefits.

Keep it up TA!

by Berkcelt on May 14, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree.

Same can be said for the Celtics as a whole. Its always been about health.

4 of our top-8 playoff rotation missed a big chunk of games this season (KG, Paul, BBD & TA). They are all healthy now.

by mmmmm on May 14, 2010 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

harder to resign him... maybe but the reason he thrives on offense is because of Rondo

he fits the system and plays within the system, and though good tony is a good on the ball defender, he might not thrive as much in other teams esp if he will be forced to create offense for himself or forced to make jumpshots, the current celtic system fits him perfectly since with outside threats like allen and a great point in Rondo he can easily slash to the paint

by jeric on May 14, 2010 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Tony's dunk.

i said to myself wow pre injurury Tony is back. When he plays with that explosiveness it adds a whole different dimension to the bench.

Gotta say, if you would have told me 3 years ago – 1 title, 2 ECF appearances, and the 1 Conf Semi (only because of KG injury), and all of these great playoff games over the past 3 years, I would have signed up in 2 seconds…and we’re not done yet… Extremely fun to watch.

Can you believe Sheed hit the Dagger 3? WOW!!

by bblakes5 on May 14, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

and he came through. The hustle play by Sheed saving the ball out of bounds says it all.

by paolost on May 14, 2010 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

These are definitely the good times

As for Sheed I was impressed with him actually jumping (really jumping!) multiple times to get a rebound. He did it multiple times too. As JVG said that one he threw into traffic was a bad/high risk play, but it signified the effort he gave and has given most of this series. Keep it up Sheed!

The Magic have to be a little bit nervous.

What's the matter? The CIA got you pusing too many pencils?

by adubson on May 13, 2010 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe so

But I’m a little bit nervous about them as well. Hope we don’t have a letdown now.

by 34green on May 13, 2010 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

My ratings have had the Magic as the toughest overall for the regular season.

Because when you correct for ‘bad luck’ losses and ‘good luck’ wins, the Magic actually should have had the best record last year. I.E. they played well enough statistically that they really should have posted 62 wins.

But as I’ve constantly point out, the Celtics’ are WAY better than their overall record because they are a totally different team with all of their starters healthy. With everybody healthy, the Celt’s win % is as good as any team in the nba. So they should be able to put up a hell of a better fight than Atlanta did. The Celts match up very well against the Magic and if they execute they should win. The tough thing will be to NOT have an emotional let down after this series with the Cavs. The one weapon that the Magic have that will be tough to stop at times is if their 3PT shooters get hot.

I believe whomever wins this next matchup, Celts or Magic, will win the finals.

by mmmmm on May 13, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually I don't think so

I was thinking just the opposite watching this game. The way the Cavs and the Celts were throwing away the ball, both teams looked anything but scary for stretches. But that’s all irrevelant. New series, new matchups, new coaching matchup, two great teams. I think it could be epic.

And I was going to say I can’t wait, but man, it’s like I need to catch my breath and just let this sink in! Such a great job by our guys!

Can't argue that the Magic is the toughest team in the playoffs right now.

Here’s to a very good series coming up. Orlando finally meets a playoff team and Boston meets a team that has no weaknesses compared to the Miami and Cleveland one-man-shows. This is going to be amazing.

by cheekmeister on May 14, 2010 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

to be honest, im more scared to ORLANDO!

they have like 5 legit shooters and we only have RAY!

by poezappa on May 13, 2010 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

you don't defend shooters with shooters

You defend shooters with fast defenders who can play tight man defense on the perimeter without giving up access to the paint.

A big factor will be Perk and Sheed being able to defend Howard in the paint without much help. If they can do that, then we have a good chance.

Nate Robinson may actually get some time in this next series. He and Tony and Marquis all may be called up on to play tight perimeter man defense.

On the offensive side, Paul is definitely a shooter, even if maybe not a pure shooter like Ray. And Finley is very much a solid shooter off the bench. But more importantly we have just as many scorers. We have been getting double figures from 6 or so guys in each game. You don’t have to shoot 3PT shots to score.

by mmmmm on May 14, 2010 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Geeze…..just enjoy this win, have a beer tonight, get a little crazy and get ready for Sunday. Your team just destroyed the “best” team in the league with the “best” player in the league. Savor this and keep the faith!!

I am proud to be a fan of Kevin Garnett, a consequential fan of this team.

This team has a lot of heart and they proved it to us.

Garnett is reminding me a bit of Bill Russell right now. That heart, grit and look that he cannot be stopped. When you watch him in the playoffs, you fully appreciate why we did not advance farther last year. He brings so much intensity (and skill of course) that cannot be replaced. This team looks better than 08 so far. The road to the playoffs has been easier——no 7 game series yet, whereby we played two back to back in 08. I do not think the next two are going 7 either.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Orlando plays as the clear favorite. Cleveland obviously couldn’t handle it. I think Nelson is a tougher player than anybody on Cleveland besides Lebron, so I don’t expect them to wilt like the Cavs, but it’s going to be different.

Just like against the Cavs we will need Rasheeds size and length against the Magic

especially against Howard and Gortatt.

If Rasheed can produce with the solid low post defense against Orlando the way he did in this past series against the Cavs… where he along with Perk completely neutralized the Cav big man.. the C’s have a good shot of winning the Orlando series…

If Sheed does not produce though we will be in trouble.

So the need for Sheed is real and lets hope he has another good series in him.

Yes agree 100%

KG looked very fluid and healthy in this series and played great.

by fordescort on May 13, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

When he's been healthy, KG has been our most consistent, valuable player. Period.

Since he’s been a Celtic, KG has consistently posted the highest +/- Net48 of any Celtic.

His defense has NEVER really slacked, even with all the injuries.

We’ve still never lost a playoff series with KG on the floor – who could possible claim he is not clutch? What does that even mean?

by mmmmm on May 13, 2010 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

People say that he fades away during end of games

I beg to disagree, because you can always count on him when called upon. Besides, he only seem to “fade away” because the ball is usually handled by Pierce at end of games.

KG was the main reason we won the series, not Rondo

His mismatch helped us score, defend and even run the offense through the post.

by rav123 on May 13, 2010 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

He destroyed Jamison down the block, that is why Mike Brown resorted on putting Shaq on him on this game; a plan that backfired as seen early. Although I still think that it is a combination of Garnett and Rondo. For me they are at a tie on the best player of this series, outsiders only sees Rondo because of his awesome stats, but you can’t take away the intangibles KG provides the team – his defense, leadership, hustle, etc.

Though, in a similar vein, Ray completely outclassed Parker at his position (and the only reason he didn’t post another big scoring night in this last game was because of his own misses on open looks – nothing the Cavs did stopped him).

Wow

I thought offensively we had a very sub par game. But defensively we showed up. Rebounds were down, shooting was poor. But we still pulled it out.

Bring on Orlando.

by amenhotep04 on May 13, 2010 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

Well, I hate to put it on Ray, but basically Ray had a poor shooting night.

If he sinks just a couple of those wide-open threes that he missed, then suddenly our offensive numbers look pretty impressive. A little bit on Paul as well.

But our defense (including his) was the key. We forced them into taking miserable shots – even though they did grab a lot of their misses (they grabbed more offensive boards) we still kept their conversion rate to a pretty miserable rate.

by mmmmm on May 13, 2010 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think Ray could’ve saved us a lot of drama, but I will take those looks any day.

The turnovers were kind of stupid at times and in bunches. I thought Paul made more good decisions than not down the stretch when he initiated a lot of stuff, a couple nice passes to get Sheed some looks.

Technically Orlando is the favorite as the higher seed and 8-0 so far

Which is perfectly fine for us. KG is back and he will be the difference maker. I’m sure most, if not all, of us here feel we’re the better team. Wouldn’t surprise me if the “experts” pick Orlando just out of spite for debunking their Cleveland prediction.

a yahoo article hinted at that a few days ago—RR trying to hold a meeting or something after the regular season lose to the Cav’s. Not sure what was said, but Doc told rondo not to do it, but he went ahead, and it seemed to frustrate the big 3, this was also about the time Rondo had hinted about it in the press mid season. Great job by the C's !

The whole team – players and coaches deserve alot of credit for winning this series.

Doc did a great job coaching in this series.

The big 2 of Ray , KG had a great series.
Pierce was in a funk but had his moments.
Rondo was just great .
Perk was a beast in the low post with his defense.

Off the bench TA was awesome and deserves praise.
Rasheed also deserves praise as he hutsled in this series, clogged the low post on defense and along with Perk neutralized the Cav big man throughout the series.
Without Sheed the C’s do not win this series so he deserves alot of credit for his inspiring play especially tonight.
Baby had his moments also in this series giving us a great lift off the bench and deserves praise also.

Watch out Magic the big mean green machine is coming!!!!!

Lebron seemed personally happy

…to be rid of ALL the pressure he was under. It was really ENORMOUS… the whole world, it seemed, was looking right at him, expecting great things from him, and only him. It’s too much for almost any human. So I think some part of Lebron was happy that it was all over. Happy to walking off into that good night, with his teammates, leaving all the pressure behind them.

Lebron did go over to EVERY Celtic, it seemed, after the game and said something — the SAME thing, it appeared, to every one of them. I wonder what it was. If anybody finds out, please post. Because every Celtic responded the same way — a look off into the distance, and a walk away. It would be fascinating to know what was said.

Congrats to the Cs, and to all the true believers.

First let me say congrats. Secondly, huge credit to the Celtics. They had a plan on defense and worked it very effectively. Also Rondo was outstanding in this series, serving the nation that he deserves to be in the same PG conversation with Nash, Paul, and Williams. Great series by him and the Celtics. Good luck against Orlando.

Just a wonderful feeling

My son and I were texting each other the whole game, and that was really fun. He is almost 16 and he and his friends all dislike Lebron and think he is a fraud. In my eyes the guy is a great player with little or no heart. Tony Allen is the man. When he first came to the Celtics, my son had a choice of a signed jersey from either Tony Allen or Al Jefferson — he picked Tony Allen because he worked so hard.

Hats of to Rasheed — he shed his dogginess tonight. The freaking guy actually dove out of bounds to save a ball and got it back to KG.

As I said, I am very happy. I am playing with house money now and if the Celtics go on to win the championship, I will be starting that thread in whcih I post every day that I was absolutely WRONG.

It's never been a switch.

It’s always been about health.

When healthy, our starting 5 has always been as good as any in the NBA. And with the re-emergence of BBD and TA, along with Sheed we have a top-8 rotation that is, well, deserving of being in the championship hunt.

Think about it, of our top 8, the following all missed significant time to injury this year: KG, Pierce, BBD & TA. That’s half of our playoff rotation all missing a lot of games in the regular season. And Perk and Rondo also got banged up for a few games.

Having all those 8 guys healthy for the last few weeks of the season, in time to really re-learn how to play together was huge and now they are just doing what they should be doing in the playoffs.

"SO WHAT IF YOU'RE BLEEDING?!!!!!!!!!"

One of the commentators (Kenny?) at Varajoa for whining to the officials about a cut instead of playing ball (the ball was still in play).

My favorite quote of the game.

by mmmmm on May 14, 2010 12:36 AM EDT reply actions

true true

that cost them a kg jumper that extended the c’s lead.

That was Jeff Van Gundy

And I knew he was going to say something, and Varejao deserved it. Seemed fitting though.

BS

Simmons ticks me off not because he doubts this team but because, as he has admitted several times, he doesn’t like this team. How can you not like this team? Yes, they are enervating. But they are also clutch, passionate, combative, and tremendously smart. The are, in short, a TEAM. And that I really love.

if you read his latest article regarding game 5

you’ll understand his notions. he’s a fan just like all of us.

I just noticed the picture above

it seems that Dwest is helping out rondo by pointing the way to the hoop, thanks delonte but Rondo knows the way already!

look

im not gonna throw dirt on the cavs or lebron,we beat em nuff said lets move on we still got ORLANDO! & god willing the suns or the lakerss hopefully we take care of busniess and make da magic drink our milkshake!,lewis cant guard KG if jamison cudnt, pierce is going to have a MUCH easier time scoring on barnes than lebron, rondo to me should win thee PG match up since he’ much quicker and more crafty,VC is too old to be fightin over screens all day when guarding ray allen and if they dare put VC on rondo ,series over in 5 ,but imma predict we win it in 6 or 7 depending how KG plays since he got the best advantage outta all the celtcss

by stylo617617 on May 14, 2010 12:53 AM EDT reply actions

hmm

What if they put VC on Pierce? That eliminates him having to run over all the screens at the same time, VC and PP are somewhat similar players. Then with that, Ray will be chased around by Barnes and Pietrus, two average defenders who are quicker than VC.

Thinking about how this series plays out is mind-crushing. Game 6 hasn’t even wore off yet. And just for the record, SVG is amazing.

by paolost on May 14, 2010 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

well.

u gotta point there but whoever has to guard allen will like everyone else get to drained to play on offence and be a big threat(besides wade who just gave up fightin screens after game 1) so allen shud be alright ,im just worried about PP he’s they key to our series unless rondo goes nuts for another series but we cant make like cle and expect so much from 1 player

by stylo617617 on May 14, 2010 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

i have to agree

this is paul pierce’s time to step up. but more importantly, this is more pressure on rondo to go nuts for another series and absolutely shut down jameer nelson. he’s one small and talented pg we should never underestimate.

by paolost on May 14, 2010 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

The matchups are completely different.

The reason Paul’s offense was down in this series was because he was the only Celtic who had a plus defender on him (Lebron). Let’s face it, we may not like Lebron, but he IS a good defender and he did play Paul well. Now, that isn’t the same as saying that he ‘shut Paul down’. Not at all. What happened is that as Doc looked at all the other matchups:

Parker defending Ray.
Mo defending Rajon.
Jamison defending KG.

THOSE were way more attractive ways to attack. Parker, Mo and Jamison all are suck defenders that we totally out-classed. So we let Lebron think he was shutting Paul down and then funneled most of our offense through those three guys (with some timely help from our bench guys as well).

In the Orlando series, a lot changes. VC is still an effective scorer, though streaky. But his defense …. well, Pierce should definitely be able to score on him. So we will probably go to Pierce a lot more in this series.

Nelson will probably do a better job covering Rondo than Mo Williams did. But Rondo has had big games against Orlando before.

I expect Ray and KG to continue to have favorable matchups on offense. It will be interesting to see how well KG does this time on Rashard Lewis.

And of course, the real foundation of everything will be the battle between Perk/Rasheed versus Howard in the post.

Favorite comical moment from Doc's press conference

When Doc asks the Globe’s Julian Benbow, “So you thought I sounded crazy?” Benbow says, “Crazier.” Doc says, “Oh, so I was already crazy?” Benbow: “Yessir.” They’re talking about him saying throughout the season that the C’s were close to playing like this. Funny stuff!

as a Hawks fan

I give your Celtics mad props for proving the world wrong. I told people that Cleveland didn’t match up w/ you all well and that Shaq is a cancer to that team but no one believed me. You all will go through hell w/ Orlando, but I have yall to win it in 6. If yall keep playin the way yall are playin, you will be championship bound. We may have swept yall in the regular season, but look where we are now, in the Atlantic deep-sea fishing!! Since my team is out, win 8 more games! Much respect from one fan base to the next.

I too was wrong. I’ve been wrong before, and I will be wrong in the future. No problem.

BTW – Where were Delonte and Leon? In retrospect, looks like we did just fine trading them away

TONY ALLEN

loved seeing him playing within himself and not trying to be a super star. He really is quite good and I hope he re-signs with the Celts this year.
