SI Gets Rondo'd

This won't be the last SI cover for Rajon

Rajon Rondo headlines this week's Sports Illustrated, with a feature article on his development over the last four years.  I think the Sports Illustrated jinx is a thing of the past so should all rest easy (will just gloss over last night as well...).

Well deserved kudos for Rajon who clearly has been the star of the Eastern Conference playoffs (and maybe the best player in the whole league depending on how you feel about Neckbeard or Mr. White Tunic).

One question for SI though, how do you not use a snazzy picture of Rajon ending Jason Williams' NBA career last Saturday?

Hmm...

That explains last night’s performance, I guess. Jinxed.

it looks decently proportioned in that picture.

When Perk was asked what he thought of Howard winning the gold medal this summer, he responded: "What’s his impression of me after I won a ring?"

good one.

It’s good we can laugh after that game last night.

i don't think the jinx extends to basketball teams from N.Iowa.....

….they just lost, sometimes that happens.

I believe in the SI cover jinx, but I think I am more thrilled that more true basketball fans may tune in and enjoy watching Rondo get down to work. While he is a little bit too much of a hotdog for my tastes, I cannot argue that he’s tenacious and thrilling to watch when he’s on his game.

Now next week, can we please have Gasol on the cover?

You pretty much summed up my feelings on Rondo

I call him “flashy pants.” My husband just calls him a plain hotdog, but either way he’s fun to watch.

As much as I would have enjoyed the picture of Rondo...

beating Jason Williams to that loose ball, this one isn’t half bad either

Damn you, SI

As your magazine continues it’s slow spiral to irrelevancy, your jinx continues to stay strong.

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on May 25, 2010 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, first thing I thought of when I saw this (even before I read the post) was the SI jinx and how that explains last night. Does the jinx apply to one game only? Not the rest of the series surely.

Who is neckbeard?

I was guessing Baron Davis, but he hasn’t been in the playoffs since 1962.

by D-Funnk on May 25, 2010 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Neckbeard and white tunic

LOL…rotflmao……

He’s referring to Lebron and Kobe.
it took me a while to get the two but I can see the funny desciptions.

tunic = kobe the fasionista

This is nothing but bad

Nothing but bad. Rondo does NOT need this going to his head. The kid was hyper-focused, determined, hungry. Who knows what’s going on in his (very young) head now? How great does he think he is now? Nothing but bad. Bad, bad, bad.

by DRJ1 on May 25, 2010 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

agreed

as much as it is for us fans to see rondo on the front cover, I’d rather not. Rondos smart though. He’ll be fine, probably pick up his game for game 5 and if there is one, definetely game 6

I understand your point

but he deserves it too, and realistically has any figure in sports been performing better overall the last month?

lets hope it doesnt go to his head

Cant stop the bandwagon effect

Media likes nothing better than to hop on the bandwagon of a winner. Except maybe to put the boot on someone who’s stock is falling. Bronnie Bron Bron must be confusing the heck out of the pack— the sure fire power-Diva misfired in game 5/6, showed the only “team” he cares about is his posse and is happy to throw his coach under the bus. What to make of that…

After thinking it over

…I think it’s not so bad after all. Details below.
We’re good.

well at least now we know why he sucked last night, the SI Jinx!!

seriously, rondo could not have played much worse last night. he did nothing the whole game, either on D or on O. He let nelson get into the paint at will and he never drove the ball. just a wasted night by rondo.

by Red2 on May 25, 2010 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

It's not just that he sucked

He started and ended the game in a daze, walking around like he wanted to be somewhere else. Very weird.

If THIS was the reason…. then the Cs are in serious trouble. I doubt it… can’t be, right?! I doubt the SI article in his head was the reason he totally zoned out last night…. but IF it was….. we aren’t winning anything this year.

Rondo is too prideful

Sometimes its a detriment. I think his pride might help him here. I can’t see him letting Jameer beat him again.

by KG's Knee on May 25, 2010 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Rondo deserves the SI cover shot...

and the recognition and respect it brings him.

He is the leader of the C’s now now and MVP of it.

Funny - Rondo has a single single and it's the SI jinx

He did look out of it – perhaps did some celebrating the night before?

Rondo is the Man...

It’s kind of funny but everything I read on this thread seems borderline negative in relation to Rondo. For those of you who are younger, listen up, you will not see another point of Rondo’s ability in Boston green for a long, long time. Enjoy this kid while you can because points of his ability come along rarely. Rondo deserves this cover and to heck with some so called ‘jinx’. Tomorrow night will prove that!!

I think it's not bad after all

- Looking at the potential bad effect: Do we really believe that Rondo will be SO affected by being on the cover that his game will suffer significantly. Uh uh. Not likely.

- There is, however, a potential good effect: Combined with Rondo’s recent iconic play (diving to the floor), Rondo, and the Celtics perforce with him, have suddenly become important to the NBA. Rondo and his team are suddenly REPRESENTING the NBA. To the extent that this makes a practical difference in game results – and opinions will vary about that — this can only help the Cs. How much difference does it make? Take your pick. Could be huge, could be nothing. It’s probably not nothing. Whatever it is — I’d rather have it than not.

you guys crack me up...

Like he hasn’t known about the cover? He deserves it, so get off it. He’ll be fine.

Has no effect one way or another

You really want to worry about Rondo? Worry about the muscle spasms. At least that’s a real problem.

Hype?

Lets just hope the SI curse passes us by on this one. So much hype around this team….this ranking even has the celts above the lake show in hype ratings:
