Baby's Back: Glen Davis Will Play Tonight; Rasheed Still In Doubt

Comcast SportsNet reports:

Glen Davis, who suffered a concussion in the Celtics' loss at Orlando on Wednesday night, will play tonight in Game Six at TD Garden.

A league source confirmed that Davis has recovered from the injury and has been cleared by the team's medical staff.

Obviously, that's great news.  Updates on Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels will be provided when available.

UPDATE:  According to Danny, Rasheed's status is still in doubt, and Daniels is out for sure:

Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said Friday afternoon that Glen Davis would likely play in Friday night's Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Orlando Magic, but that Marquis Daniels would not play. Both Davis and Daniels suffered concussions in Wednesday's Game 5.

Ainge, who made the comments in an interview on Boston sports radio station WEEI, also said Rasheed Wallace (stiff back) remained a game-time decision, as coach Doc Rivers initially indicated Thursday.

Ainge told WEEI that Daniels would be replaced by Brian Scalabrine.

He is going to be pumped, that’s for sure. And his presence will inspire his teammates and the crowd. Tonight is going to be one for the ages.

Vinnie!!!!!

A bet is a bet!

Reporter: About a year ago I asked about the Celtics-Lakers thing and you said you'd really only seen it on TV. Now you've been through it, can you talk about playing the Boston Celtics for the NBA championship?

vinnie always says he expects the worst

…but worries more than any of us, I think. That’s his way…. he’s dedicated, tho, I’m pretty sure.

Hey Doc -- you nailed me with that description

Honestly, I hope Glenn is not putting himself at any risk by playing tonight, but sure glad he is back. My son and I will be there yelling our asses off tonight.

how about TA then?

could we expect him to be fine in the final?

by friedgreentomatoes on May 28, 2010 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know how I feel about this...

A concussion is serious business, and the style of which Glen plays with – very physical and willing to sacrifice his body – puts him at further risk.

I know – I’m not a doctor, but I’d really hate to see him rush back and get another concussion… 2 in such a short period of time is no esa bueno.

I would suspect the end of howard

for the rest of playoffs as well.

Don't worry

They do know what they’re doing. The word is scary, but the there are concussions where you can safely go back and play after just 20 minutes. No problem for his health.

Last night the refs heavily favored the Lakers. Tonight, I expect reasonable officiating, or possibly even some help. We should take this one.

happy and worried

i hate to say it, but i would be very cautious about playing baby on howard. whether he intentionally throws elbows or not, he definitely throws elbows. though i wouldn’t be surprised if howard is in foul trouble tonight. the fact that the refereeing has become such a major topic in this series suggests the league will be extra-cautious about letting howard get away with all the extra hits (dirty or not) he gets in.

by guy incognito on May 28, 2010 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

I'm worried too.

I love Big Baby and don’t want to see him permanently damaged from this. Stupid Elbow needs to learn how to play the game or get booted out.
Go Big Baby!
You are so right on, Guy Incognito
Prayers for Big Baby Davis.

Well Baby playing in the game is one thing...

how well he can will actually play is the big question following his concussion.

He gutsy for giving it a try so lets all hope he plays well and can help contribute to a win !

Baby is back! What about Sheed?

by Blackberry33 on May 28, 2010 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

Mr’ Davis’s low center of grabity and Mr Howard’s taller legs, may incur an “accidental” injury towards the original perpetrator, possibly threatening Mr. Howard’s future ability to procreate.

Accidental contact, I am sure.

by johnnymost on May 28, 2010 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

as much as i would love to see that,

i think the refs are going to be very aware of big baby and howard going at it.

by Blackberry33 on May 28, 2010 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

Three things

1) I am torn because Davis really helps the team and I’m glad he is playing but concussions are such a scary thing I am worried any additional damages. At some point, health, especially brain health, is more important than basketball

2) If Davis were somehow to position himself to draw an elbow to his head again, Dwight Howard would be ejected.

3) I hope BBD wears a padded headband like Scal last year.

this is great news

baby should inspire this team and the crowd, can’t wait to get situated in section 328.

There's something more important than basetball?

:)
Fyi, one of the country’s leading experts on concussion works with the Celtics. I’m sure he’s fine. (A minor first concussion is often no big deal… can sometimes go back after just 20 minutes, to say nothing of 2 days.)

To your #2 – problem with that is that if Davis gets a 2nd concussion, he will likely be out at least a week.

The NBA has been following a pattern lately. Pattern says the Cs win tonight. Feels like they will.

by DRJ1 on May 28, 2010 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

I think this is Glenn's second concussion.

Believe he had one three years ago, I think related to a car accident, but cannot remember all of the details. If he was a high school kid he probably would not be playing tonight, but you are right in that if he did not pass the neurological tests there is no way the Celtics would allow him on the court tonight.

by vinnie on May 28, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

3 years would not matter anyway

…by “2nd” we mean RECENT ones… because each one makes the next one more dangerous (and likely) for some time thereafter. But not 3 years.

by DRJ1 on May 28, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really concerned about BBD

If he’s medically cleared to play I’m not concerned about him..at least not any more concernd than I would be in a month or two weeks. After you start getting concussions its easier to get another one, that’s true, but the dangers of post concussion syndrome are a little bit of a hot button topic. You can guarantee that the Celtics Medical staff did their due diligence and covered their butts on this one.

That scene where he got up and tried to stagger back into the game…. was unforgettable. The kids most certainly does have heart.

Absolutely.

Gotta love the guy. Trying to get back into that play and he was out cold.

good feeling

I think we’re going to come out focused, set the tone defensively, move the ball on O, and close these guys out. I was nervous yesterday, but I believe that they are going to end this tonight.

All signs point to a win

Baby back is big. Wallace isn’t gonna miss this game unless he’s really incapacitated… and he did walk off on his own @ game 5.

The most important this is that the NBA seems to have had enough of all the crap they’ve put us through. (Lakers too.) Callahan, McCutchen and Mauer are refs designed to help the Cs. Our guys are gonna be stoked to put this series away. NBA got it’s money’s worth already, and wants a classic LA-Boston series for maximum viewership. They don’t wanna chance a game 7.

Bottom line: expect a win tonight.

by DRJ1 on May 28, 2010 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

TD Garden not the Magic's happy place tonight

The Celtics, at their best, are better than the Magic. I am confident that Glen’s courage and commitment will inspire each of his teammates to give their best effort tonight. I expect the Celtics to play smart, team-style basketball and destroy the Magic.

that pic is so hilarious.

some writer on the larger SBnation asked, "how many licks does it take to get to the center of Glen ‘Big Baby’ David’s face??? ..lol
This guy tonight has just epitomized Celtics grit by coming back to play. Lets wrap it up please.

i think this could change the game

not only on the floor, but i think when baby checks into the game the place will erupt

by letsgoblue86 on May 28, 2010 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

Yay!

One motivated mack truck just rejoined our team. I think the Dancing Bear may just have some new tricks!

And letsgoblue86 is right. Even my house will erupt! I am so glad we snagged Glen, it’s still a mystery to me how so many teams passed on him.

We could use more tough men in this world:)

I finished work at 1pm today and my girlfriends and I have been setting up the place for an epic Celts-Orlando game viewing party.
Thanks Glen, this piece of news is just adding more fire and excitement to everything. And we will be drinking to all you tough guys out there. Make it count tonight will ya?

starters will have to play

really good, tough, smart basketball since our whole bench has question marks behind their name

The starters might not win the games by them selves but they can surely lose it for us if they struggle
