MVP! MVP! MVP!

Messed around and got a triple double.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Rajon Rondo.  29 points, 18 huge rebounds, 13 assists, 2 steals.  Dominating.

Of course, no one person can do it all himself, so credit the Celtics team defense (especially down the stretch) and bigtime contributions from Ray Allen, Tony Allen, and Kevin Garnett among others.  But clearly the story of the game was Rajon Rondo.

Forget the Big 3.  Forget the Big 4.  It is Rondo and the Big 3 backup stars... and Perkins... and Celtics Pride.  I don't even know what to say anymore, I'm too busy grinning from ear to ear.

Do the Cavs have enough jerseys?

I’ve never seen a team display their history so much, especially a team with such a lackluster one.

Butin fairness to Paul, he’s playing good D! its just he’s offense is so bad, there’s no energy! Look at Ray, if he cant get opened, he drives to the basket!

How many players on the Celtics roster this year (I believe there were 20 throughout the season) played 0 minutes in this game?

I think all anyone ever said was that there was room for him to have been number 15. Looking back on the season, there certainly was.

by Wire Guy on May 9, 2010 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

He has the toughest defensive assignment of anyone in the league, spending a lot of energy on the defensive floor, and has done a pretty good job in 3 out of the 4 games so far. He has been quiet though, but that may be part of it.

by wisco87 on May 9, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

During post-game on CSN, Gary and Donny were both speculating that he is injured or ill. My husband really thinks his shoulder may be bothering him and it’s just that no one is talking about it. Then you have Doc saying that foul trouble has broken his rhythm, which I sort of buy, I guess. Who knows?! Personally, I just keep waiting for him to have that break-out game, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he had it Tues. in Cleveland.

by 34green on May 9, 2010 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

he'll break out by the finals

remember how tough a time ray had in 2008 playoffs before game 5 in detroit? people were speculating he was over the hill….. a month later he was dropping 25 on kobe’s hed and a year later he was dropping 52 in a playoff game.

Paul will be fine, just be patient, its coming. he works too hard and is too great a scorer, its a slump…. he just needs to get aggressive and get his paul pierce on, elbow-in bullyball carmelo style

by TheOutletPass on May 9, 2010 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

To be honest, I think it is hard to say one has outplayed the other. They play two different positions who have different ways of impacting the game. There both putting up big numbers, but I think Rondo has done an excellent job of controlling the tempo of the game, and getting the right people the ball at the right time. Rondo brings the energy and is vital to getting the Big Three good looks and keeps the D having to worry about who is going to get ball.

They've been playing baseball for over 100 years. Only 19 perfect games. Ever.

Not much is going to get the headline over that… great win for the Celtics, though. That Rondo is something special. I love to see a real pass-first point guard out there… not a Celtics fan, but I am a point guard fan. This is a good NBA era for me, then… lot of great PGs out there today, and Rondo’s got a unique style.

Rondo did more than his share of shooting today, of course. (Hey, he’s facing Mo Williams — might as well.)

Another must win game and the C's won it again....

The defense was great and so were the C’s.

As goes the C’s defense so do the Celtics.
Rondo gets the game ball and deserves MVP status on this team as he is now the leader of it.
Tony Allen played great also and gave us a good spark.

Its a 2 out of 3 game series now… considering we play well on the road the C’s still have a good shot to win this series.

Go C’s !!!!

by fordescort on May 9, 2010 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

Superb performance, and the C's can do better too!

To think that they won with Paul Pierce playing atrocious all game. I like Tony Allen being in the game when they’re running etc..

As usual it comes down to their defense.. the better the defense, the easier the points. Great gameplan on D (props to Thib), and amazing game from Rondo. I can’t wait to hear the Cavs “thoughts” on the game.

by TomHamilton30 on May 9, 2010 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

Kudos to the Tony Allen and Big Baby

Rondo is clearly carrying the team, but how about the heart of Tony Allen and Big Baby (uno uno)? Ray is so steady and just brings it every night. Sure wish they would have kept Eddie House, I don’t understand why Doc is so reluctant to go to his bench. There are solid players there who will play their hearts out. Much as I love PP, he just seems intimidated. Gotta go to the guys who are going to dive on the floor. Who cares if they aren’t the guys whose jerseys everybody is wearing.

Rondo could have easily had 30+ points...

he missed around 5 FT…I love Rondo…..Now all we need is for PP to wake up from his self imposed hibernation…what on earth is going on with our captain…this could have been our last home game and yet Paul still settling for jumpers that continue to produce bricks…
There was even one point in the 4th when I actually wanted TA to finish the game instead of PP.

I get the Boozer stuff now

Rondo would make him look incredible.

by TheOutletPass on May 9, 2010 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

don't think Rondo'd help Boozer any more than Deron Williams already does

Guys who play with Williams, Nash, Paul are already going to be overachieving. The key is to find higher value guys (aka cheaper contracts) who are underperforming bc they don’t have the right setup man.

Jason Thompson, Andrey Blatche… these are guys who would really improve with the benefit of a PG like Rondo. Unfortunately they’re both young, promising and cheap and therefore valuable to the teams they currently play for.

by milt palacio's shot on May 9, 2010 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

just get any athletic big who can finish on the break...

Rondo needs to be surrounded with an explosive big man to connect with on alley oops and an aggressive wing who finishes well on the break… these should be priorities 1 and 2 – GIVE RR ALL THE WEAPONS HE NEEDS!

Not that it’s realistic anyway, but forget Amar’e – no need to overpay for an athletic big when all Rondo needs is someone who can catch a pass and dunk it. What Nash does for Amar’e, what CP3 did for Tyson Chandler (who doesn’t look as good anymore now does he?), Rondo will do for our young and inexpensive big. Just find one for him!

As long as PP is healthy, he`ll deliver...he always has!

I realize he`s only 16 for 50 in this series…that just means he`s due to bust loose!

Great Point title 18

It gets a little frustrating when a player has a couple of bad games, there are a ton of posts about how bad they are? Rondo, Ray, PP, KG have all be subject to this, yet all have had huge games. I think this emphasis that no matter what this is a total team effort and Rondo has been dominating the playoffs, but without the rest of the team they be out by know (see Miami)
What I really like is that in the interviews lately he seems a little more humble and recognizes how dangerous this team can be when they all contribute, and how even MORE dangerous they are when Rondo controls a game like this.

Awesome game. He played 46 minutes, controled the whole game, didn’t even look tired, and he got all the big plays in the 4th (pass, rebound, made shot…). Amazing, one of the best Celtic individual performance ever!

The three’s was a stat that stood out, for me as well, Ray was off from behind the arc, but still had 18 pts, and got his shots off which is a good sign on the offensive ball movement.

alot of bad calls on both teams and no calls

i am really tired of bad calls though, and i want to know where the NBA is going to draw the line. Or if they’ll continue to allow their refs to make 30 bad calls a game every game.

It's a fair point

The officiating is bad across the board, for all teams. Lebron travels, KG sets moving picks and neither guy gets burned for it by the refs. Because they’re stars.

I don’t know what it will take to change it.

by TheOutletPass on May 9, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

KG does that all time

and gets away with it his whole career

anyways that doesn’t change the fact that KG is great. he is consistent in this series.

rondo just played the best celtic game i’ve seen since larry bird. and rondo’s game is more diversified with the defense he plays. and doc gave him credit for the ballpressure he put on the cavs. what energy and what! mabe 1 minute of rest. pp doesn’t get up the floor on the break and tony did and we need more players like that to augment rondo’s speed. very nice, clutch game from kg, ray, sheed and stubby. and perk stayed away from his slo-mo offense and set nice picks, got some boards and blocks. we have our 1 man show and you better believe the cleveland hierarchy will be up every nite figuring out how to stop the rondo express. pp has been pathetic folks- something is either wrong with his body or his head. or his ego.

He did everything for the Celtics but of course with big help from the Team. UBUNTU! Go Celtics! The D was great and give credit to Captain cause he played goo defense against LBJ. KJ is consitent too. even Sheed played D. Back 2 Back Blocks! GO Celtics! this Game is finished so it’s time to prepare for Game 5. Thanks to Rondo and the Celtics we got back in this Series.

He can carry the Team

Something that concerned me about the 08-10 configuration of the Celtics is that they lacked a certified go-to guy, the kind who can say get on my back i I will carry you, not just here or there, but through a series. well, ladies and gentlemen, I give you—Rajon Rondo. he can do it, and how far the Celtics go rests largely on his shoulders. As alluded to before, he’s not a sideman anymore and needs to come out a play like a star.

The C’s have shown they can slow down Lebron. The Cavs have yet to put Rondo back in the bottle. Theerin may lie the difference.

by Tenacious D on May 9, 2010 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

To be fair, they have shown they can slow down- not for an entire game, but if you look at the Cav’s wins, Rondo has definitely been held in check in the second half, and at key times.

by wisco87 on May 9, 2010 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

the last thing i want to see, is over-reliance on rondo, we saw how that turned out in game 3. But he is a star and this is his moment.

by spinz on May 9, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Rajon Rondo is like Magic Johnson and celtics-magic preview

If Rajon Rondo plays like a Magic Johnson style of basketball, the celtics are very tough to beat,if the celtics advance to the conference finals and likely face the orlando magic,I think Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett will have the advantages in their respective matchups,Paul Pierce still has to step up his game, and the celtics also must also defend the perimeter especially the 3 point arc and also must shoot the 3 ball extremely well if they want to beat the orlando magic.

by Augustus Padilla on May 9, 2010 7:51 PM EDT reply actions

Witness the future early in the 4th quarter:
Rondo, Tony Allen, Glen Davis, Kendrick Perkins, with the Legacy Triplets coming off the bench.

When Rondo hit Shaq, and hit the ground and bounced back up, he proved again, not only is he talented, but tough.

by johnnymost on May 9, 2010 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

Start Tony Allen!

PP is clearly struggling there shows no sign he’ll bounce back soon enough

I think he could contribute a lot more off the bench and we need to rest Ray Allen more

by friedgreentomatoes on May 9, 2010 7:58 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I went to the game

Paul did so much on D it’s hard to describe…he often took a step toward Mo, just enough so RR could had time to deal with the picks..he was also sliding to the paint when Jamison got deep position, all while working Queen James…think of how often the ball came back on top to Mo/West because Paul and KG played the passing lanes…with that being said…when TA played D on “Queen without a ring” he was doing it man to man and James couldn’t take TA off the drible without serious picks, which forced the ball out of his hand on many occasions…and Glen played with the fierceness of a man not ready to take a vacation…if the C’s play as a team they very capable of beating the Cavs (and the refs)

by Fastbreak1 on May 9, 2010 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, PP is still doing the little things

Thanks for giving your take on this and pointing this out. When Rondo has a game like today, we don’t necessarily need PP’s scoring, and it’s not like he shot atrociously anyway. He just didn’t shoot much.

And Tony….also great work.

The long rest is bad for us

It stops our momentum and it importantly it allows LBJ to rest his elbow.

About this game, well, Sunday afternoons have not been nice for the Celtics until today.

by getthat18now on May 9, 2010 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

Does anybody see

Tony Allen developing a better jump shot and taking over as starting SG when Ray Ray retires? Not that it’s even entirely necessary the way he hustles but I do believe that would be a threatening starting duo. That, PLUS pick up and/or develop a young athletic power forward, I think that’s the future of Celtics basketball…

Tony and Rondo, that is. The 2 of them are just so fun to watch play together.

Makes me wonder if Monta Ellis and Rondo could've existed together if that trade with GSW went through

I really like a good athletic player alongside Rondo. I had my doubts initially, but now I’m wondering…

Regardless, this offseason the focus needs to be on getting some young, quick, athletic guys to play with Rondo.

Just think, our offense really isn’t set up to cater his style of play and he’s still this good. Imagine him in a more uptempo offense ala Steve Nash/Phoenix?

by tommyfan on May 9, 2010 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

PP

Sure, he’s obviously lost confidence in his offensive game, but c’mon you fans who are calling his play “atrocious”, “terrible” and the like-he has been playing SOLID and active D and he was working his tail off in ways that won’t be reflected on the stat sheet. He’s in a funk, but he’s not moping out there—he’s got the biggest defensive assignment on the court and he’s manned up on Lebron nicely. Now, if he could just get a little confidence back and start hitting the J, we’d close these guys out and move to Orlando.

Oh side note—has anyone on this board EVER seen a PG pull down 18 boards in a playoff game? Just curious, as I’ve been watching the NBA for the past 30 years and I can’t recall ever seeing that happen. Phenomenal effort at both ends for Rondo—who somehow does it all without breaking a sweat or even breathing hard. That behind the back to TA for the stuff on the break had me throwing haymakers in the living room. He knew Lebron was laying in the weeds for one of his patented blocks on the break and he just suckered him into committing and then laid it down. Beautiful. What a rare talent this kid is—and he’s getting better and better.

Honestly feel like today we were all witness—witness to the passing of the torch from PP to Rondo as the next Celtics star and captain.

I love Paul. I really do.

But right now, he’s a blackhole on offense. Despite what the ESPN “analysts” say, we can win this series, but not with Paul currently shooting 16 for 50 from the field. We need more out of him, point blank.

It’s not just the stats, it’s the body language. He looks out of it. Idk if its LBJ or if he’s sick/injured, but something isn’t there. As far as him playing well on defense, he’s been solid but he and Ray have been pulling double duty on LBJ the past few games, and Paul’s been in foul trouble so I’m not sure fatigue is what’s causing his offensive struggles.

Whatever the issue, I hope he turns it around soon. We need his offense.

matter of views

concerning the captain paul pierce i have to say that you can look at his struggles in two ways

1) paul has struggled on offense to start the the series and what do you know, the series is tied 2-2 and after watching the truth in the past, i am confident he will come threw the rest of the way.

2) Paul has struggled because he is over the hill, or not focused, upset at his role, cant score on lebron, not confident and this will not change therefore we are in big trouble.

I like option one because i think paul’s value has been very important to us having a TIED series. he is playing the best defense he can, he spaces the floor for his teammates and guys, he is still the captain of this team even though he might not be the best player. He is obviously slumping and i am confident he will turn it around, i guess the big question is. Will it be to late when he finally does.

I think and i know

i think: Kevin could have a 30+ point game before this series is over with jamison on him…… also ray might have a 30+ poiint game with mo williams guarding him

how bout the defense

containing lebron 2 out of 4 games (we contained wade zero out of 5), AND shutting down the supporting cast (especially jamison and mo by kev and rondo… great job by perk on shaq too)

turn lebron into a wade-esque onemanshow and we win the series. period.

Ray's D

Is it me or is Ray really upped his game on D? A lot of talk about his big downside on the dfensive end— Watching the game now, the announcers mentioned it too, but it seems like he is doing a really good job defensively against LBJ. He doesn’t get flustered when his shot doesn’t fall or his man makes a good play, and shows his mental toughness, which is very valuable during the pressure packed playoffs. Plus it helps take some work off Pierce’s shoulders. love watching this team when they all focus and bring the heat.

Those MVP chants were awesome. Celtics future looking very bright with RR + Unknown Athletic Big + Wily Veterans.

The sequence with amazing behind the back pass to TA for a dunk and then TA following it up with his return-the-favor assist to Rajon. TA looking good.

Pierce has to give something offensively, particularly in Cleveland. He has the chops to score big on the road and the team will need it I think. Those saying “he is doing all the little things” and “great D” are kidding yourselves; lots of players can do the little things given minutes and his D was so great that Ray got the LBJ assignment this afternoon. Pierce is a great player for his clutch scoring, he needs to find himself soon.

You are probably right, but I have been watching the Celts for almost 50 years

And I have never seen a 6-foot guy dominate like he did, nor grab 18 rebounds. That to me is why it is incredible and perhaps the best performance in Celtics playoff history. A 6-foot guy (if he is 6 feet) grabbed 18 rebounds, including 4 offensive. Just incredible.
