Rumor: Big Al to Memphis

Wolves burning up the phones - TrueHoop Blog - ESPN

However, the most consistent thing I'm hearing is that the team appears to be determined to move Al Jefferson. According to sources they've offered him to Detroit for Tayshaun Prince this week and have also contacted the Pacers about their interest in Jefferson for Troy Murphy's expiring contract. However, the latest thing I'm hearing out of Minnesota may have the most legs. Sources have told me that the Wolves and Grizzlies have been discussing a swap that would send Jefferson to the Grizzlies for Zach Randolph. The deal would allow the Wolves to save a lot of money over time. Randolph has one year, $17.6 million left on his contract. Jefferson has three years, $42 million left.

Wow.  So basically a salary dump for the guy that you traded Kevin Garnett for.  Good luck with that.

Update: This trade apparently is "dead in the water"

Poor Al

Al has played on some of the worst teams in league history, and I’ll be happy if he can get out of Minnesota – that is an awful situation where they may either have to draft a player that refused to work out for them, or a player the GM bad-mouthed. Not good.

But is Memphis any better a situation? Will basketball ever be viable there? I don’t get why Detroit wouldn’t do that Prince-Jefferson deal. Before getting hurt, Al was one of the better players in the league. He should be back to full strength this coming year and back to putting up 20-10 each night.

Obviously, I love how things turned out for Boston, but a part of me always wonders how the team would have developed with Al and Rondo playing together?

If this is true

there is no reason the C’s cannot get Al. They can save Minny more cash. On the other hand Minny might look awful in that move.

by Brendan on Jun 23, 2010 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed ...

… how bout Al and filler for KG back. ;-)

by libermaniac on Jun 23, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

How does that save them any money? KG has 2 years left at 40 million.

They’d end up getting out of the salary cap situation a year earlier, but paying almost as much overall.

Btw, there’s a reason Al is being offered around. It has something to do with him playing on some of the worst teams in league history. Those two things aren’t coincidental.

Getting Al should be looked at closely

But it would be a PR nightmare for Minny’s fans.

Tayshaun Prince? C’mon. Minny is nuts.

by Fred Roberts on Jun 23, 2010 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

If there is any way we can get Al back, do it!

Why not Sheed and BBD for Al? All they want is an expiring? Come on!!! If Minny is worried about looking bad, make it a 3 team trade, we get big Al, Detroit gets Baby and Sheed back along with a pick, Minny gets Tayshaun and a pick.

I love Al Jefferson!!!

In Memphis the arena was empty every night

It’s like going to Hades. Big Al may be a half step slow defensively, but he didn’r deserve this.

I Agree - big Al doesn't deserve this

Big Al has just been very, very unlucky. He comes to Boston and shows a world of talent in the low post. However, he really aren’t very good. He then goes to Minn, who is “Rebuilding” and those team weren’t suppose to. Then he tears up a knee. One thing about Al, when he signed his big deal, he didn’t hold out for the Max, said “He didn’t deserve it”. You have to love a guy like him. So many of these megomanics feel they are entitled to a Max deal because they had 1 decent year.

I hope thing work out for the Big Al, I think he deserves it!!!

Prince for Al

I am a Pistons fan & would love this trade IF it involved another pick along with Wilcox (a PF we never use). Al gives us the post PF we need & the later pick can get us a Center maybe Hassan Whiteside with their 12th or 23rd pick. Plus we keep our #7 pick & can still get a good player out of the draft. We have Daye, Jerebko & Summers so right now we can afford to let Prince go where he can shine & get more touches. Sorry Celtic fans, with the addition of Sheed, I was pulling for you guys to win it all.

by DD3 on Jun 23, 2010 6:40 PM EDT reply actions

Please present 1 realistic scenario that gets him here.

Meaning:

1) Minny gets a player/players they actually want
2) Money is close enough under CBA (Celts need to send nearly $13 million back, and Wallace/Davis combo doesn’t make that happen.)
3) Celtics don’t disrespect a player to the point where it alienates a powerful agent and earns them a bad rep.

by Cousin It on Jun 23, 2010 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

I have no idea HOW to do it....I just want him

because I loved the guy…..the comment about not playing D is pretty true…..I am just having an emotional moment….let me have it

Is it Soup Yet?

by Master Po on Jun 23, 2010 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Wrong

Pierce could always play defense, he just wasn’t always asked to. On the other hand we tried getting Al to play in our defensive scheme and he failed miserably.

Hmmm

Sorry, this reply wasn’t for you MasterPo, in fact the post I was replying to seems to have disaspppeared.

Trade backs?

KG for Big Al? Isn’t KG expiring soon?

by CelticPride on Jun 23, 2010 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

No, He has 2 years left at $40 million. Almost as much as Al is owed.

It’s a contract no one wants to touch this year.

Besides, how much of a slap in the face would that be to KG? Even if Minny wanted him, the Celtics would be hated by players and agents for sending him back to basketball hell.

by Cousin It on Jun 24, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Not $13M

Celtics need to send $10.32M back. Sheed plus Glen totals $9.622M, so they’d need to add another $600K. They could do that with a sign-and-trade of Tony, Marquis, etc., if Minny were interested.

Why would Memphis want to move Randolph? He was an integral part of their run last season.

by kozlodoev on Jun 23, 2010 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

I agree - Al's career stats aren't that great

Al career: 15.3 ppg/ 8.7 rpg/ 1.25 bpg
Last year 17.1/ 9.3/ 1.29

Zach: 17.3/ 8.8/ 0.22
With the griz 20.8/ 11.7/ 0.42

by nba is the worst on Jun 23, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

He was an All-Star once like last season.

Big Al = Big Zach. Their fates are somewhat similar. To bad for them.

by Papatrichs on Jun 24, 2010 5:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Everyone hoping for Al should consider this

Although Jefferson is undoubtedly an offensive talent, he absolutely can not play defense at all, you know, that thing the Celtics hang their hat on. There’s a reason that the Celtics were willing to give him up in the first place. Think real hard and you might be able to guess what thay reason was.

by Jaycelt on Jun 23, 2010 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

big al is a stud everyone knows it, so what he cant play defence. ray and PP were terrible too.

this league was created to drive normal people nuts! how the hell can you trade Big Al for Z-bo?
And OKC got the 18th pick for taking on deaquon cook! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! deaquon is a great young piece, and they got the 18th pick! thats highway robbery.
Danny is crazy for not taking on cook for the 18th pick.
Im not going to waste my time watching the same celtics starting 5, DA needs to make a move, Trading for beasley would be great. and would drive my laker friends crazy.

I think this shows that we should all just be thankful for what we got (one championship and nearly another one in exchange for an expiring contract, a couple of mediocre players, and garbage).

by jurrasicearl on Jun 23, 2010 9:00 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Beasley has the fight in him to be a great player.

by jurrasicearl on Jun 23, 2010 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

I'll take a healthy Big Al over Pau Gasol one on one in the post any day

But seriously, isn’t Al what we need with KG doing less and less of his scoring in the post?

by Greg Knopping on Jun 23, 2010 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

No doubt ...

Al has some nice low post moves.

Considering Garnett is become more of a perimeter player, big Al would be nice to have on the roster.

This is especially true if Rasheed (are only true low post scorer… does retire) which would leave the C’s with no legit low post front court scoring threat .

by fordescort on Jun 23, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Except Al can’t guard me.

Big AL to The Celtics PLz

Man minn is stupid if they ddi that prince deal but its not a bad idea for zack cause he is a great player an all star in the west actually and they would be saving money big time.BUT i want the celtics to grab him back sure trading him and a bunch of other things for KG before his injury was great i mean he was a huge part of the C’s winning the tittle in 08. I think the C’s should do w/e they can to get AL back hes a scoreing center he can rebound good i mean perk will prolly be out till after the holidays so we need a center

by Shawn Marques on Jun 24, 2010 8:43 AM EDT reply actions

ATTN: DANNY

Get Big Al back here!!! If they are giving him away, give them a pick and a bag of donuts, he can score around the bucket and we can use that!
