Yeah

the list there is just the draft invites, but oliver and the big white boy we signed will be there too.

If it does....

I'd be shocked if Gaffney and the other dude don't play

Same with Semih. These rosters are anything but set in stone; hard to know who’s going to be playing until the first jump ball (and even then, it seems like more players come and go.

Still wish they ran the league in Waltham, that was a blast.

by theBird on Jun 28, 2010 10:45 AM EDT reply actions

Celtics summer league

The Celtics never ran a summer “league”, it was a rookie camp. For years the Celtics used to practice at Maritime Academy down the Cape where they let anyone in for $.50 cents. I can remember seeing all the big name players there year after year. They then moved to Brookline.to
Hellenic College, where they ran their preseason practices. Games played there were against one another.

The camp at Brandeis was more rookies than anything. My son went to the Red Auerbach camp for a couple of years and he played with a few of the rookies the Celtics had brought in to see. At night you could pay around $5.00 and watch games against one another. Those days are gone now. You would never see anything that cheap again! Big name players who showed up there only watched for the most part. Ah..the old days!!!

by rosalie on Jun 28, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

define "League"....

It wasn’t just Celtics and the rookies they invited. Don’t see what was different about what we went to four or five years ago versus what they do now in Vegas and Orlando. Probably eight or ten different squads; pretty sure we saw Popovich in the crowd, pretty sure San Antonio was there. Think we paid ten or fifteen bucks for the triple header.

by theBird on Jun 28, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

I saw Marcus Banks first “NBA” game and “Lebron James” first “NBA” game at the Reebok Pro Summer League at UMass Boston. Funny thing is, Banks was dominant and Lebron was shaky at best (I believe he left the tournament for an award show, or was late to the tournament). Pretty sure that “Bing-Bang-Boom-Bremer” also had a huge night, but Kedrick Brown stole the show playing lock-down D, raining 3’s, and laying down Multiple thunderous dunks.

by RIPRED on Jun 28, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

that was also the year of Brandon Hunter's dominance...

Buddy of mine and I went down specifically to see LeBron, although I’m pretty sure he didn’t end up playing the day we went down.

Reading another report from those summer league games, praising Danny’s drafting acumen by selecting the dominating Marcus Banks and Brandon Hunter. Just another reminder to keep anything that may happen in the next few weeks in perspective.

by theBird on Jun 28, 2010 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

And this is why Summer League *rocks*

“J.R. Bremer out-shone LeBron James, the NBA’s top pick in the 2003 Draft, and the Boston Celtics withstood a late Cleveland rally to record an 87-84 win at the Reebok Pro Summer League at Boston.”

by theBird on Jun 28, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

that tells me that they like gaffney and oliver because should those two play they would be open to other teams signing them I believe since their contracts are non guarantees

by Nick Sannicandro on Jun 28, 2010 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

we have their rights...

Their contracts aren’t guaranteed, meaning that we could release them and not have any further financial obligation. Doesn’t mean they can sign with anyone else, though, unless we release them. We’ve got their rights. I’d be shocked if they don’t play, having these guys around for Summer League and training camp is the whole reason we signed them at the end of the season. They’ll play unless they’re hurt.

Same thing happens every summer, the initial list of guys is never the final list, guys get added all the time.

by theBird on Jun 28, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I am most excited to see how Art P. develops. Watched him play a couple of times against VMI. Granted, VMI did not play defense and did not have anyone to match his size, but he has skills and can move pretty well for his size. I would like him as a 3rd big. Shelden has to go and have not read anything to suggest the Celtics are going to keep him. We need a big that has some offensive skills. That was the beauty of subbing Sheed for Perk in the playoffs. We still got some D out of Sheed but he also brought the offense that Perk could not. At least with Art P. we can get some rebounds and points off the bench.

by JPV on Jun 28, 2010 11:15 AM EDT reply actions

I'll be looking forward to seeing how

wrong most of the cbloggers are about Haragody who will end up being another steal by DA.

He’ll provide some nice scoring off the bench. The comparisons to Scals are as if they’ve never watched him play and just picked the only white NBA player they know. Sad really but, not surprising.

by Birdbrain on Jun 28, 2010 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

Gody should be good

Draft net has him a very nba ready, He is a very good mid range shooter, he can score after contact so that should go in his favor. If he can get his weight to 225 he can be a “power 3”
He is the furthest thing from finese player, the good thing bout him is that he is very physical.
I just thing signing scal would be dumb.

Not sure the Scal comparison either

by Staubach on Jun 28, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

facts are

his game sucks crossing over to the NBA…look at his shot style easy block for any of the long bigs in the league. He is going to have to transform his entire game to have any success

by Nick Sannicandro on Jun 28, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

offensively, all he needs is a consistent perimeter shot.

I’m not worried about Harangody as a scorer. He is very strong and very skilled from 12 feet in, offensively. He just needs a fade-away jumper to make his offense fairly complete.

Defensively is where he will probably have trouble fitting in. He’s probably not fast enough for the speedier SFs and not tall enough for the bigger PFs. He’s a hard worker, though, and smart. These shortcomings can be overcome with technique and teamwork.

by mmmmm on Jun 28, 2010 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

He seems to hit his 15-foot jumper a lot, but boy it looks ugly.

by kozlodoev on Jun 28, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

its great that he is a good scorer

his shot looks just like Matt Bonner shot. look it up. and matt has had a long career.but gody is a scorer off the bench that would be welcome. i would like to see him at the power 3 function like anthony randolph. cause he is at best after drawing contact.

by businessbmw on Jun 28, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he is definitely fearless in the paint.

I like the way he moves in traffic. If he sticks, he gets to understudy behind Pierce, who of course is one of the greats at that.

Guys who can start outside the elbow and end up at the hoop are so valuable. That is what has made Pierce such a great player. But obviously on top of that Pierce elevated his game by adding both his fadeaway jumper and his 3 PT shot.

by mmmmm on Jun 29, 2010 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Check our Carrolls stats too

He will never be able to defend but he can shoot the lights out

by Staubach on Jun 28, 2010 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

Fairly unimpressive bunch

And isn’t Green a PG and Carroll a SG. I know their size may say one thing(Carroll being small for a SG and Green a good sized PG) but their skills say differently. The big men in this group is where I will be concentrating my attention when I watch the Summer League this year.

by nickagneta on Jun 28, 2010 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, kinda "meh" at this point

Want to see Harangody and the two kids we signed last year. Not a lot else that’s of interest, though. Last season, we at least got to see if Bobby Swift had anything, and got to watch McSweetney waddle up and down the court.

I do have this fear in the back of my mind… that ownership may decide to be a little chintzy with the back end of the roster and keep a few rookie-free agent types around instead of vet minimum guys.

Carroll played PG this past season

So I put him there out of necessity more than anything.
As far as Green, I’m unfamiliar with him – but DX says SG/SF.

by Scott Schroeder on Jun 28, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Any other Rumors of potential Celtic signings?

If Carroll can make himself at least an adequate PG, his shooting will speak for itself.

Hope we keep him!

“He’s currently playing for CB Gran Canaria in Spain. According to his agent, Jaycee hopes to develop his combo guard skills this year and sign a contract with an NBA team in the near future”

“Howly Carp!”

“He has the 4th highest 3 point field goal percentage, 14th most 3 pointers made, and 52nd most points in NCAA history. He is the Aggies’ all-time scoring leader and holds 9 other school records”

by Staubach on Jun 28, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

No other signings that I've heard of today, but..

As soon as I hear them, I’m putting them on the site.
And Carroll isn’t a point guard currently, but I’m sure the Celtics will be looking to see if he’s able to play the position in Summer League (when wins and losses don’t matter).

I write about basketball players with Ridiculous Upside. I know you'll love it.

by Scott Schroeder on Jun 28, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but

Carroll is no PG. He didn’t have any PG skills in college and it just never appeared he had the talent or physical ability to do so.

Green was actually a combo guard in college who was a very good passer who saw the court well and had good explosion to the basket and ability to dish. But he’s big, Like 6’5" big and wasn’t a completely true PG because he would have trouble guarding the smaller, faster PGs that are becoming the rage in the NBA due to lack of quickness and lateral movement.

May guess is when the team is put together Green is running the offense and Carroll is playing off the ball looking to shoot.

I had thought — in desperation for a big — about whether Byron (f/k/a B.J.) Mullens might be worth pursuing. It isn’t just the guys on our team Danny will be looking at.

Artsiom Parakhouski

I actually got slightly excited looking at his numbers from this past year. I see only 5 games with under 10 rebounds and a big improvement from the previous year. Not bad for a 6;11 guy who has only played for 5 years and did not play in the first 2 years at college. He had scored over 10 in every game this year, averages over 2 blocks per game and a gaudy, much needed rebounding average of 13.4 per game with 2 games over 20 rebounds.

my favorite game line of him was vs VMI- 30 points, 22 boards, and 3 blocks. I hope he surprises everyone and makes us our team. We need some size!

Against Duke, he managed 23 points and 14 boards and 3 blocks..not bad in losing effort against top tier talent. I am surprised some did not take flyer on him in mid to late 2nd round.

by BringToughnessBack on Jun 28, 2010 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

vs kansas (who’s center was drafted in the top 15, along with a 6’7 wing) art had 21 pts 13 rbnds 2 blks.

vs winthrop (best team in his confrence) he had 2 games with 20+ points and 15+ rebounds. his worst game was 11 and 18 boards.

his teammate was drafted 4th in round 2. armon johnson.. a pg. maybe armon was helped out by having a 7 foot center to rebound, block shots and score in double figures! i’m slowly getting on board with them signing him!

i think the celtics should sign him just to keep him away from other teams. if they sign him and put him in the dleague for a bit, it couldnt hurt. just to get a longer look at his game.. to put him with perk, semih, kg, and a vet big (b. miller would give them ALOT of size! no more getting out rebounded)

by jdunn123 on Jun 28, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

but the good thing about the situation the celtics are in is that semih and art may come cheap. they may have the last 5 on the roster be art, semih, luke harangody, scal and gaffney just to keep the money down. luke, and art can spend time in the d-league to develope in hopes of next year. semih, scal go into bench bigs who play 5 min a week.

by jdunn123 on Jun 28, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

they could have 4 summer league players along with semih. 3 year deal keeping the money down. then after the lock out that looks like will end ray’s career. and have a say in how long kg and pierce play. they have ALOT of money to build around rondo and hopefully avery bradley, perk (if healthy and continues to develope).. also allows them to sign mike miller, brad miller (if thats the best option). and maybe allow sheed return after the all star break ala p.j brown. have a playoff rotation of rondo, ray, pp, kg, perk/sheed/miller then bradley, ta, davis, miller, sheed/perk/miller. thats a dangerous frontline. miller is old but a smart passer.

by jdunn123 on Jun 28, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

can semih qualify for the summer league? why is he not there with art.. they could play at the same time. have two 7 footers out there. they could try harangody at the 3 at times. or even sims, semih, art. would be a big front court.

Summer League rosters aren’t set in stone. Those kids will play (barring injury), that’s the entire reason we signed them when we did, so we’d have their rights and be able to see them in the Summer League and in camp. Not sure I’d read too much into jersey numbers, either….

I’ve watched all his games this year, here in Spain. He’s a heck of a shooter but IS NOT A PG. And mostly at the NBA level. Forget about it. He’s an undersized 2, great shooter.

That's what I remember about him at Utah State

He just has no PG skills whatsoever. Poor passer. No first step ability to separate. Poor finisher at the basket. Mediocre ball handling. Haven’t seen him play in like 4-5 years but don’t remember PG skills at all.

I'm a Radford Student

and Big Art is the man! He’s the reason our school won the Big South last year, almost got us there this year, and got the whole school excited about basketball. People say he dominated a weak division, but look at his stats against Duke UNC and Kansas. He won’t be able to overpower people offensively the way he did at Radford, but he’s still a dominate rebounder, which is a need.

Watching this guy play was awesome, and I love that there’s a chance he’ll be on my favorite team.
