PLEASE JUST SAY NO DANNY!!
We need PRODUCTION from our bench, not just someone who is there to help an injured player off the floor or wave a towel from the sidelines!
No
Overrated defender.
He gets way more than his share of credit.

Huh?
I actually… didn’t see… that one… coming :(
… bah. Hope he comes back as an assistant coach or something!
Oh my god; imagine Scal as our new defensive coach :’)

Perhaps a sign of how the last few days of FA have gone?
Also a sign that the C’s don’t plan to carry any more developmental players than they have in recent years?
that's what I'm wondering....
Figured with Bradley, Harangody, and Erdin, roster spots $13 – #15 were accounted for. Perk’s going to be out for at least half the season, but he still counts as a roster spot. Bradley will probably be active and hopefully will earn a little playing time, but we can’t be counting on ANY of these guys to be major parts of the rotation.
So, that only leaves eleven spots for guys that you think you might need real contributions from. We know what Scal is; he’s an “in case of emergency break glass”-kind of player, he fills in OK when we get desperate but isn’t good enough to be part of the main rotation.
I know they have a lot of respect for Scal (a lot more than we fans do), but I have to wonder if they’re more-or-less just doing the polite thing and talking to him. I mean, the dollars can’t be an issue, we’re not paying him anything more than the vet min this time around and neither will anyone else.
Maybe they’ll bring him in and have he and ’Gody fight it out for the last roster spot. Gotta have a goofy white guy.
How'd you get up to fifteen?
Perkins, Garnett, Pierce, Allen, Rondo, Davis, O’Neal, Erden, Bradley, and Harangody make 10. Nate Robinson and Scalabrine would make 12, if they’re signed. Who am I forgetting? Are you counting Gaffney and Lafayette?
wasn't counting...
Still expect a few more vet-min signings, and maybe getting someone in return for ‘Sheed. Point is that with the three kids, AND Perk on the shelf, AND bringing back Scal, that would only leave ten roster spots for guys you expect to contribute. That’s OK – as long as we don’t have any more injuries, and as long as the guys we bring in can actually play. It’s not leaving a lot of room for error.
okay
I’m with you on your concerns. I was just worried I had forgotten some guys.
I don't think it is just polite talk.
Aside from being the “in-case-of-emergency-break-glass” role player (at which he has done a fine job) he is also from all indications pretty much like having an extra assistant coach who can scrimmage. He apparently does a fine job of scouting opposing players on film and translating that onto the court. He did a decent job substituting for KG & Powe for an extended period two years ago. None of us expected that. I sure as hell wouldn’t want that to happen again. But as someone who can be assigned to defend a particular player in a particular game, you know he’ll come onto the floor well prepared to do so.
For the vet minimum, his versatility and allegiance to the system (i.e. Doc trusts him to do exactly his job) probably make him valuable enough to warrant that 12-13th spot – even if he ends up wearing a suit much of the time.
You can call it ‘intangibles’, but Rivers and Ainge and the other coaches respect Scal for a reason – even if he probably would need a step ladder and a springboard in order to dunk the ball ….
Plus he’s a funny guy and I for one would miss his radio call-ins …
I agree with this post but since I am new here I have a question.
Does +1 mean agreement or something else similar yet different?

On the forums of this blog, if you read something particularly praiseworthy, you're able to credit the other poster with a "Tommy Point", which accumulate for that person. It's a matter of prestige and honor.
Since there are no “Tommy Points” for the comment threads following the Featured Stories (such as this one), some people have gotten in the occassional habit of simply replying +1 to another person’s comment. But they don’t accumulate. So they can’t save you in future for any brash, reckless, stupid, or uncivil thing you might happen to write.
So welcome to Celticsblog. But keep your nose clean.
yes, +1 means "ditto", or, "Whut he said!"
alternatively, since this is a basketball related blog, you’ll probably see “and 1” posted quite often to mean the same thing.
Why Danny, why?
I thought the 5-year “Scal Nightmare” was over!
The $15M he stole from the Celtics since 2005 wasn`t enough?!?
Amen brother...
Hey Danny, go find a lockdown wing that can also revbound and shoot and FORGET about Scal. I’d rather see another Euro-stick (7’+) signed than bring him back.
"Talking" with the Celtics?
Pleading should be more like it.
Well, “talking” is far from “signing”…I hope!
vet minimum is fine
else we overpaid
Individuals Win Games, Teams Win Titles
Maybe the new Polarizer
is the old polarizer!!
Scal at the vet minimum does not bother me at all. That makes one side happy.
Scal in a S&T with Sheed would make the other side happy.
Here is one take: In order to make a S&T deal, the player has to “talk” with the team. Maybe that is all that is happening here.
I like your take
Sign and Trade would be good.
I think he should go to MIAMI
and completely sabotage that team! Do you remember when Scal dislocated Perkins’ shoulder in practice? I believe there were another two incidents where he hurt Celtics in practice and they had to miss game time.
Therefore, he should sign with Miami and play extra “hard” in practice. “Ooo, sorry about your ankle Dwayne Wade.”
Why not send him to LA if we can choose the teams where we want him?
I don’t give a crap ’bout Miami. None of them 3 ever did anything to us. Lakers stole our championship! So we send him over to the Lakers and he becomes their offense coach..? Perhaps he could show his (in)famous backstep to Fisher. Or try turning Gasol in a 3 point shooter!
Irresponsible I stand...
just when you thought it was safe to go back to the Garden...
Scal makes his return. yeesh.
is this really Danny’s plan to fortify the bench? a player we couldn’t get rid of for 5 years? to all those Scal supporters out there, I just don’t see the fascination for him.
If Danny resigns him (at whatever amount) and he actually sees the court outside of garbage time, Danny has screwed up in his efforts to get this team back to the finals.
A Scal supporter here
He was better than his critics had the vision to see. He could not rebound. I’ll give you that one. But he took charges well, played good help defense, and wasn’t bad at wing 1-to-1 defense. And, he could hit the three. Send him in to “bang the boards” and you will be disappointed. And for sure we need a Leon-Big Baby-or Better low down presence. But send him in for those other reasons and you got production.
Having said all that, I think he lost a step and he can’t afford that. I would think vet minimum as a max. And yes I could see him becoming a defense minded ass’t coach. Danny is not going to make a mistake with a very known quantity like Scal. So keep your shorts out of a knot. If he’s gone I trust its a good decision. If he’s signed same thing.
I like the 'In a Emergency Break Glass' assessment
Scal may not be a uber player but he’s not chopped liver. He can (admittedly in a pinch) play either the 3, 4 or 5 position. Who else do we have who can do that? And six fouls against Howard, Shaq and that ilk are still six fouls while ONeal and Erdin take a break.
I'll take some of that vet min..
heck, I’ll take some of that 2nd round rookie pay, that’s more money than I’ll make in a year!
I am talking to the Celtics
about taking my talents there next year.
"People don't understand, if you can't live the rest of your life off one year in the NBA, you can't live off 21." -- Keon Clark
Yes. We. Did.
Scal will be taking his talents to the West End this fall? Yes. We. Did.
Scal, if you are reading this
There are fans who value your contributions to the Celtics and who would like to see you in green next year. You play hard, you play smart, you give awesome interviews. The coaches obviously have confidence in you. And who else stays up all night after Game 7 in LA just to do a radio call-in during Boston drive time? You rock! And you can drain the 3!
Brian Scalabrine, you live our dream and live up to the dream — the dream we all share of being a Boston Celtic. All the naysayers are just jealous, they really wish they were you! Hell, so do I. Come back to the Celtics so we can all be reminded that dreams really do come true!

I guess when it comes to contract negotiations in the NBA,

The Decision
Step aside, Lebron James, as we have our very own The Decision! The fate of Banner 18 is at stake!
I stumbled upon this most hilarious tribute to Scal:-
SCAL!! WITH NO REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE!!
That will be the most popular phrase on SportsCenter assuming we resign this firecracker.
With Lawrence Frank as the new asst. coach
Looks like Scal’s going to be reunited with his old coach, at least I think that Frank was the Nets coach when Scal was still there
